"You bastard!" Alex roared. His body shaking with emotion. Alex clenched his fists tightly in an effort to gain control over the emotions that
"Now now, there's no need for that. This is a test to prove your love for her." Magnus calmly stated. He waved his hand and the barrier around Brittany dispersed. Alex ran his hand across her cold stone cheek, his eyes burning with rage.
"What the hell do you mean?"
"Simple, seeing as how this spell came from the spell book that you kept hidden I'm sure you know how to reverse it."
Alex thought for a moment, trying to remember what the reversal spell was. As soon as he remember it Alex realized why Magnus had chosen this spell. "The only way to remove the curse is to offer my life. A life to save a life. That's what Alcadan wrote at the bottom of the page containing the spell."
"Correct, but there is another way to save her."
"How?" Alex demanded.
"You could kill the person that placed it upon her. I know you'd love nothing more than to that." Magnus said with a sneer. "Go ahead and kill me. My mages would strike you down in an instant. You have a choice, take my life to save your loves or lose your own life to save hers. What's it going to be? Either way I win. If you kill me you prove that you haven't really changed, and if you sacrifice your own life...well that's just one less problem to deal with."
Alex contemplated what he should do. A very large part of him actually considered killing Magnus knowing full well that he had it coming. Still, Alex knew that's exactly what Magnus was hoping for. He's right, no matter what I do he wins. There's no way in hell I can leave Brittany like she is. Still, what am I going to do? Dammit, right now I really could use advice about now Brittany. Somehow you always managed to say the right thing. Now I need that more than ever.
"What is your answer? There's really no use in questioning it the answer should be clear. Once a monster always a monster."
Alex brought his hands to his sides, sighing deeply as he realized that it was hopeless. Just as Alex was about to give Magnus his answer he felt his left hand graze something in his pocket. Alex's eyes widened as he slipped his hand quickly into his pocket. Magnus didn't seem to take notice of this, if he did he didn't say anything. As soon as Alex's fingers hit what was in his pocket a new idea came to his head.
"Magnus I've come to my decision." Alex stated in a defiant voice. Magnus was shocked to see Alex so calm considering the decision he was faced with. Magnus clasped his hands together as he studied Alex for a moment before speaking.
"So, what is your decision? Are you going to kill me to save your love?"
"No." Alex answered calmly knowing that Magnus wouldn't be expecting Alex to reject his offer.
Magnus couldn't hide his surprise at Alex's words. It seemed that for a moment he forgot what he was going to say as he sat dumbfounded that Alex had decided to choose sacrificing himself rather than killing Magnus. "Does this mean that you're really willing to sacrifice your life for that girl? So you're going to die to save her."
"No. If I died to save her, Brittany's life would be forever haunted by the fact that I died for her. What is life if you can't share it with the one you love? I can't give my life knowing that it would cause her eternal suffering because I did."
"What, you mean to tell me that you're just going to leave her like that?"
"No there is another way to set her free."
"Heh, you are more a fool that I first believed. I am the Archmage, don't you think that I know every spell there is? I know for a fact that there's no possible way you can break this spell without sacrificing a life."
"If you were the true Archmage, then you'd know there is another way. Alcadan strongly believed that there was always another way to do things without having to sacrifice a life. That's a lesson I see you haven't learned." Alex smirked. "Now watch as I end your little game right here!"
Alex pulled his hand out of his pocket and in one swift motion covered his right hand with his left.
"What are you talking about? Your foolish tricks won't work."
"This is no trick Magnus. Think of it more as a gift from an old friend." Alex stated. There was a bright flash of light as Alex removed his hand. Alex held his right hand out in front of him clenched in a fist so that Magnus could see it. Magnus's eyes widened with recognition as he glared at Alex's hand. On it, was a silver ring with red symbols on its side and a red gem in its center.
"How...how do you have that ring?" Magnus yelled.
"So you do recognize it. Well that's good that means you know what it can do." Alex declared. Alex's right hand glowed with a soft red light as he turned to face Brittany. "Let's face it, you've lost Magnus."
Magnus jumped to his feet, his staff in hand and pointed at Alex. "No, I will strike you down where you stand if you touch her."
"Then strike me down." Alex thrust his hand at Brittany's chest and closed his eyes. There was a bright flash of light and Alex felt the stone encasing Brittany start to break away.
"Fine, then you haven chosen death."
Stop this at once Magnus.
Alcadan declared.
Alcadan you've heard what he's said. He's wanting to rage war against the Lord of the north. We can't just sit by and allow it. I know you helped him once before, but Alcadan do you really want to start another war that will result in nothing but death?
If you are going to claim to be the Archmage then you need to control your anger better. I do not need to explain my actions to you, nor do I intend to. This world is shrouded in darkness. If it takes a war to shed some light on this world, then a war there shall be.
Well I cannot sit idly by and allow him to make a mockery of everything we stand for! I gave him a chance to prove that he had changed and he didn't do it. How can you so easily trust him? You're the one that suggested this test and he made a mockery of it.
Do not let your anger blind you to the truth. This boy had showed his faith to his love even more so than if he had sacrificed himself. I never intended for either one of you to die to save the girl. You cannot condemn him for being smarter than you. He had the ring I forged for the original demon Lord. That ring can lift and curse and disperse any barrier. If he can use the power of that ring then we have reason to listen to him.

When Magnus opened his eyes he was still seething with rage at the fact that he had just been humiliated by Alex. Still, he wasn't about to evoke Alcadan's wraith either. He lowered his staff as Alex rushed and grabbed Brittany who had started to fall once she was completely reverted back to normal. Alex caught her and kneeled on the ground holding her in his arms. "You okay?"
"Well I feel a lot lighter now." Brittany replied with a weak smile. She glared at Magnus as her anger gave her the strength to stand. "What in the hell gave you the right to do that?"
"I was testing him. You would've ended up fine either way so I don't know what you are complaining about." Magnus replied calmly.
"I just got turned into stone!" Brittany exclaimed. "I think that have a damn good right to be pissed!"
"I'd restrain my mate if I were you. Just because I didn't kill you it doesn't mean that I won't reconsider it." Magnus threatened as he turned his attention towards Alex.
Brittany looked back at Alex to see what he was thinking. She was surprised to see a serious expression on his face as he spoke. "She has every right to be mad at you and so do I. You harmed my mate an action that should cost you your life. Did Zanatos set you up to this, or was this of your own doing?"
"Actually it was neither of the two. This wasn't my test to give. If it had been up to me I would've killed you the moment you set foot in my realm." Magnus answered truthfully. Alex nodded as if he had expected as much, yet Brittany could tell he was upset by this news.
"Know this, I don't like being tested. Especially if it brings harm to my mate in the process. Whoever told you to do it stepped way out of line. If it wasn't for the fact that I had that ring...." Alex stopped as a new realization came to him. His mouth was slightly ajar in wonder as he looked at the stone tablet behind Magnus. Brittany walked over to him slowly , and gently touched his arm.
"Alex?" Brittany asked softly stirring Alex from his thoughts. Alex smiled when he looked at Brittany.
"It's okay." Alex told her. He then turned back to Magnus. "It's sad to see how far the might have fallen. The mages were once the original demon Lord's most trusted advisers. He looked towards them in times of crisis. Zanatos has taken you once honored positions and turned you into nothing more than common thugs."
Before Magnus could respond to Alex's statement Alex quickly cut him off. "If you want that for you lives then so be it. I know for a fact however, that most people don't want to live in fear. A war is coming Magnus. It will either tear this realm apart or bring peace back to the land. The outcome is uncertain. The only thing that is certain is that the mages will be affected by the war. You cannot remain neutral, Zanatos will ensure that you will fight. To him everyone are pawns in his in his bid for power. I hope I am leaving you with much to consider. This decision can not be based solely on simple likes and dislikes. I know you didn't care about Alcadan, you only wanted the knowledge you could gain from him. At the very least use some of that knowledge. A wise person once told me that if you have the power to take a life you also have the power to save a life. I didn't understand what he meant by it at the time, but now I can see what he means."
"To see the truth one must humble themselves. For a strong man cannot see his own mortality until he has been weakened." Brittany quoted remembering one of the verses in Alcadan's spell book. Alex nodded and gave one last look at the stone tablet before turning his back to Magnus.
"For all you words, this girl as you put it, is wiser than you could ever be. I have a feeling that soon you will be in for a rude awakening about the truth concerning the Lord of the north who you so humbly serve. Maybe then you will see the error of your own ways Magnus. Brittany would you mind taking us home?"
"Sure." Brittany replied sweetly. She grabbed Alex's hand and closed her eyes. "Shunkan....!"
"STOP!" Magnus yelled taking Brittany by surprise and stopping her in mid spell. Both Alex and Brittany turned in surprise as they gazed at Magnus. "Do not think that just because you spouted what you believe in that it will make any difference. I don't care what you say, you are no Lord. Regardless of what you say the people of this realm will never believe you. I do know this, under the Lord of the north's rule they have become spineless and weak. They've lost all their pride, and some even their will to live. Still, this is better than a bloody war that will never end."
"Magnus you are free to believe what you will. The fate of this realm will be decided by those who live in it. Those weak and spineless people are the result of Zanatos's rule. They may have lost their pride, but all it will take is a small example of courage to remind them of what they have lost."
"Do you really think you can inspire an entire realm to stand up and fight against the Lord of the north, much less the other three Lords?"
"Yes." Brittany answered before Alex could. She looked at him and smiled before continuing. "Who doesn't want a better life? I don't think it would take much for them to realize that something needs to be done. Zanatos deserves whatever happens to him and so do the others. Alex is a great leader and I have faith in him. Lots of people do."
"Well, at least you have one supporter." Magnus said dryly. "You are right about one thing. A war is coming. You've ensured that fact. I just hope that you can live with the fate that you have cast upon this realm. Chaos and destruction will follow this war resulting in the death of hundreds of innocent people. I will undoubtedly be there when the final blow is struck. The only question is to whom the blow shall fall upon."
"That is the question we are all waiting to be answered." Alex agreed solemnly. "Only time will tell."
"Heh, I can see why the Lord of the north despises you so much. Your arrogance is truly irritating." Magnus said with an amused expression.
"That's funny, that's what Alex says about you." Brittany said politely causing Magnus to turn red with anger.
"You may be strong, but your forces will not be able to stand up to the Lord of the north's power. You will need to become stronger if you ever hope to stand a chance. I can assure you, the mage's will not come to your aid."
"We shall see." Alex said with a smirk. He turned back to Brittany and nodded. "There's someplace we need to go first before we go back to the castle."
"I'm way ahead of you." Brittany said. "Shunkan dentatsu!"
As Brittany and Alex disappeared in a flash of light Magnus turned towards the stone tablet behind him. "You might as well come out. Something tells me you want to gloat."
The stone tablet raised revealing a secret room. Alcadan stepped out of the room with a serious expression on his face. "I am not one particularly fond of gloating. Especially when it concerns matters as grave as this."
"Well he certainly has potential, but still I don't trust him. He speaks of honorable ideas, but how can you be sure that he will leave up to his ideals?"
"Magnus do not think me so blind not see that in your heart you have already formed and alliance with the Lord of the north. I know that you do not like the Lord of the south, and due to that you will always resent him. You have chosen your path so go forward upon it. This however, is where we shall part ways."
"What! You can't be serious!" Magnus exclaimed. All the mage's were in shock over what Alcadan had just said.
"It is obvious that you no longer need my help. You are the Archmage as of now. Use your power wisely, I will no longer be here to guide you. For far too long I have allowed things to continue so this is just as much my fault as it is anyone's. Now it is time that I do something about it."
"So you will turn your back on the mages to help a pathetic traitor. It seems you too have become a weak. Fine, I shall take on the position of the Archmage. I am sure that I shall do a better job than you ever did."
"I hope that for your sake, and for the sake of everyone else you do." Alcadan stated. "Farewell."
Without another word Alcadan disappeared in a flash of light. Magnus turned towards one of the mages and angrily yelled. "Get me the Lord of the north. We have much to discuss. The time for war is now upon us."
