Both of them changed quickly and collapsed onto the bed. Brittany snuggled close to Alex who had his arm wrapped around her.
"Alex."
"Yes."
"Do you think...do you think that with everything that's happening? Do you think we honestly stand a chance against Zanatos?"
Alex could hear the fear in Brittany's voice. For the first time in what seemed like an eternity it truly dawned on Alex. She's not from this realm. Whatever happens, it won't be her fight. I brought her here, if not for me who knows what might've happened to her. I've changed her fate by bringing her here. By doing that I've caused her more pain and suffering than she should've gone through.
"We will make it through okay. That's what you always tell me, isn't it?" Alex replied softly. Brittany was shocked at his response but nodded slowly.
"Yes."
"Then why wouldn't it hold through for this. We'll be fine, I promise that nothing will happen to you."
Brittany relaxed and felt all the tension leave her as she melted in Alex's arms. All the weariness she had felt began to take its toll as she started to fall into a deep sleep. "Thank you."
Alex sighed softly and kissed her on the forehead. "What have I told you about thanking me for things I'm supposed to do. I love you and I'll always protect the one I love."
Alex could tell that Brittany had fallen into a deep sleep, and judging by the smile on her lips she was having a good dream. Alex smiled as he heard his name escape her lips as she dreamed.
She's having one of those dreams. Alex thought with a smirk. It wasn't long before he too fell asleep, but his dreams weren't filled with happiness. His dreams were haunted by tragedy.
Alex saw before him a dark shadow with solid white eyes. Alex knew who it was but he couldn't understand how it was there before him. Alex and the shadow stared at each other for what seemed like an eternity, each one sizing up the other. Alex didn't know why he was doing what he was, but in a matter of seconds him and the shadow were battling. Alex's mind raced with thoughts on why he was battling the thing before him and how it could be there. As if in an answer to his thoughts the creature spoke.
"You were once a killer and a killer you shall always be. The only thing restraining your inner killer is that girl." the shadow said. "She is the real reason you cannot use your power. That seal is just an excuse. The truth behind your weakness is that girl. I could take care of her for you if you wish."
"Don't you dare lay a hand on her!" Alex yelled.
"Why not? You have, and as much as you don't want to admit it...I am you."
"No you are nothing like me! I would never hurt Brittany, I am no monster!"
"Oh, but you are one. Deep down you know that if you ever regained your power you would become one once again. It is only a matter of time. The only thing stopping you is the girl."
"Leave her out of this. You know she has nothing to do with my powers."
"Do not think that I do not know what you have done. I am you remember. I know your every though, your every desire. Above everything, even this thing you deem as love, you desire power."
"No, that is not true!"
"I can't believe I really sound that pathetic." the shadow said with disgust. "You need my power, you know you want it."
"No...I don't. I want...I want you to leave me alone!"
"Oh how the mighty have fallen. You are weak, you need me."
"No...."
"If you care so much about that girl then you'll need my power to protect her."
"No, you want her dead, I won't take that risk."
"Yes you will!" the shadow lunged at Alex grabbing him by the throat and lifting him into the air. Alex tried to break the shadow's grasp but wasn't strong enough. Alex struggled to breath but the shadow's hold on his neck continued to tighten. "Either accept my power or you shall die."
Alex's vision was slowly darkening and he knew he had no choice. "Fine...I'll...."
"No you don't!" a voice called Alex. Despite Alex's blurring vision he could make out the form of Brittany who was running towards him. The shadow still holding Alex growled as he turned to face her.
"No...Brittany...stay back." Alex said softly in a voice barely above a whisper.
"Once again she has come between you and your destiny. Now, she shall pay." The shadow released Alex, allowing him to fall on the ground. Alex tried to stand but his legs felt weak. Something the shadow had done to him made it to where he could not move. Alex watched in horror while Brittany stood frozen in place as shadow advanced upon her. Brittany tried to cast a spell but before she could the shadow stabbed her in the chest with its hand.
"Alex..." Brittany gasped as blood poured from her lips.
"Brittany!"

Alex woke up in a cold sweat. He was breathing heavily and moved the covers off of him which clung to his body. Alex sat up gasping for breath, his first thought was on Brittany. When he turned to look at her she was already awake and looking at him with worry. Alex was grateful for their connection and for her understanding as she gently rubbed his arm. She smiled weakly at him already knowing that he had a bad dream. Alex could tell that she wanted to know what it was, but he wasn't ready to tell her just yet.
How can I tell her I just saw her death? Alex thought as the darkness of his dream began to take hold over his heart.
"Alex I'm not going to leave you. Nothing is going to happen to me." Brittany said softly reading his facial expressions and knowing what his dream was about without him having to tell her.
"I can't help but think that if I had never brought you here then you'd never be placed in this danger."
"If you had never brought me here a lot of things never would've happened." Brittany started. She could see the disappointment in Alex's face and continued. "If you'd let me finish, a lot of things would've never happened. Like we would've never realized how we really felt for each other."
Brittany brought herself up to Alex and kissed him gently on the lips and then whispered in his ear. "That alone was worth all that's happened."
It was painfully obvious that they both felt a sudden urge to be together, more of out of comfort than out of desire. In a matter of seconds both of them gave into their needs and began to take off each other's clothes. Their love making was nearly as forceful or as fast as before. This time it was more sensual and slow. Each one catering to the other's needs. By the time both of them had climaxed they were ready to fall asleep again.
"Maybe now I've chased away all your nightmares." Brittany whispered as she laid on Alex's chest.
"As long as I have you in my arms my heart cannot be consumed by the darkness that threatens it. " Alex replied softly kissing Brittany. "Now, where were we."

The next morning Alex and Brittany awoke to Holly pounding on their bedroom door. Both Alex and Brittany were exhausted due to the fact that they hadn't slept much the previous night. They were both a little groggy and neither one of them were fully awake when Alex told Holly to come in. They had forgotten that they were both completely naked until Holly came in. Holly turned bright red and quickly turned around.
"I-I'm sorry...I didn't know." Holly stammered. Alex and Brittany quickly exchanged looks as their cheeks flushed. They quickly got out of bed and grabbed their clothes.
"No it's quite alright. You couldn't have known. It's not your fault." Alex assured her.
"We sort of forgot. Sorry about that." Brittany added still embarrassed that Holly had caught them.
"No it's okay I should've just waited outside. I should've known that you two would've been well...together." Holly said softly.
"For God's sake it's called sex Holly. We're not children." Alex said shaking his head. He sat on the bed wearing a white long sleeve shirt with a black jacket and black pants. Brittany threw on a white long sleeved top and a black skirt and sat next to Alex on the bed while he put on his boots. Brittany giggled at Alex's comment and Holly sighed in relief as she timidly asked.
"Is it okay to turn around now?"
"Yes we're fully clothed." Brittany assured her.
Holly turned around slowly, once she saw they were indeed fully clothed she relaxed a little more.
"Now what is it that's so important that you just had to wake us up?" Alex asked not hiding the fact that he was upset to have been woken up so early.
"Well my Lord, I believe there is something you should see."
"What is it Holly?" Brittany asked intrigued by Holly's nervous excitement.
"Just come downstairs and see. You wouldn't believe me if I told you." Holly said unable to contain her excitement. It was then that Shadow barged in.
"Holly why aren't they down here yet?" Shadow asked. He stopped when he saw Alex and Brittany sitting on the bed with an amused expression on their faces. Shadow nervously chuckled. "Sorry my Lord. There's some urgent business that I believe you'd be greatly interested in. Kiba is already downstairs dealing with the matter as best as he can, but I believe you should see this with your own two eyes."
Alex and Brittany exchanged knowing glances as they looked at Shadow and Holly with suspicious eyes.
"Why do I have a feeling that I shouldn't have slept in this morning?" Brittany asked.
"I'm starting to get that feeling too." Alex admitted. "Well there's no point in staying here seeing that we aren't going to get any answers from these two. Still, I swear if I go downstairs and anything explodes or tries to kill me...both of you are dead."
Everyone in the room burst out into laughter, but Brittany and Alex could tell that Holly and Shadow's was a nervous laughter.
"We'd better hurry my Lord. We don't want to keep the guests waiting." Shadow said suddenly. Alex raised his eyes in interest.
"Guests?" Alex and Brittany said in unison. Without another word Shadow and Holly led them downstairs. All the wolf demons and the elves were filled with nervous excitement as Alex and Brittany passed by them. By the time they found Kiba and Rire they were both anxious to find out what exactly was going on and who these guests were.
"Kiba what the hell is going on here?" Alex asked. Kiba was very calm as he led Alex toward the main doors.
"Right this way my Lord and you'll be able to see." Kiba said a smile breaking through his lips. Rire, Shadow, and Holly stood to the side as Kiba threw open the front doors. The bright light of the morning sun momentarily blinded Alex and Brittany. They shielded their eyes from the sun and gazed into the horizon. What they saw took their breath away. There before them were thousands of warriors who quickly kneeled when they saw Alex. The flags of the eastern and western realms could be seen waving in the breeze telling Alex where they came from. Alex couldn't sense any anger or malice coming from them, but still he wasn't sure why they were here.
"Kiba what is all this?" Brittany asked shocked by this unexpected turn of events. Kiba beamed proudly as he answered.
"It would seem they are here because they want to serve you my Lord. They want to fight under your command." Kiba told him.
"Alex."
"Yes."
