Alex ran past Kiba who was very pale and wiping away the tears that fell from his eyes. Kiba tried to stop Alex but Alex brushed him off as if he were nothing. Alex threw open the doors to where Brittany was and burst into the room. What Alex saw halted his anger and rage, turning it into bitter sadness and mourning. Simera was standing at the far wall with her head bowed low. Alex could hear her sobbing but he didn’t care. The only thing that he saw was Brittany’s pale form. The lower half of her body was covered in blood. Alex walked slowly up to her side and knelt beside her. Alex didn’t even realize he was crying until he felt his wet tears hit his hand. He hesitantly picked up Brittany’s pale arm, amazed by how cold she was after such a short period of time. Alex gently stroked her hair, letting his silent tears cascade down his face. Her face was so calm and peaceful, just looking at her mad it hard to believe that she was really gone. Alex’s throat was dry, and he wasn’t even sure he had said anything at first until he heard Simera’s crying stop. “What happened?”
Simera’s lips quivered lightly as she stared at Alex’s back. Try as she might she couldn’t find the right to say to him. Instead she started crying again, unable to do anything else.
Alex’s sadness turned back to rage due to Simera’s crying. She doesn’t know how it feels. Why in the Hell is she crying. She’s not the one who just lost someone!
Alex turned his head and glared at Simera with nothing but hate. Simera stopped crying instantly as she met Alex’s death glare. His eyes seemed to turn her entire body to stone, unable to escape his gaze all she could was stare at him. “How in the Hell did this happen? How in the Hell did she die?”
Simera took a deep breath to calm herself before answering. She mentally kicked herself for losing control like she did. As much as it hurts me to lose her I can’t imagine how it feels to Alex. He’s the one who’s hurting the most right now.
“I’m not quite sure. One moment she was pushing with all her might, the next she just stopped pushing. I told her to keep pushing, but when she didn’t reply I figured she had gone unconscious. I told Kiba to try and wake her, when he couldn’t I became worried and checked her pulse. I don’t know how it happened Alex I’m so sorry.”
“Don’t tell me you’re fucking sorry!” Alex yelled causing Simera to jump. “I don’t care if you’re fucking sorry! That doesn’t change the fact that the love of my life is laying here dead!”
“Alex...,” Simera said pressing herself hard against the wall trying to shield herself from Alex’s anger.
“Just get the Hell out of here!”
“Lad, it’s not her fault,” Kiba said walking into the room and surveying the scene that was unfolding before him.
“Then who in Hell’s fault is it?” Alex yelled not even turning to face Kiba. Instead he bent over Brittany’s body and kissed her softly on the lips.
Kiba motioned for Simera to leave so that he could talk to Alex alone. Simera was only to happy to get out of there and eagerly took the chance while she could. Kiba walked over to Alex and stood beside him.
“I should have been here. I should have been by her side.”
“You didn’t know lad. No one knew. That’s one of the risks of child birth. You can’t always predict the outcome.”
“Still, I should have never left her. I shouldn’t have. If I had stayed....”
“If you had stayed it wouldn’t have changed anything lad. You can’t keep blaming yourself for this. It wasn’t your fault, it wasn’t anyone’s fault.”
“You’re wrong. If I had been here, I could’ve done something. I would’ve seen it sooner. I would’ve gotten Simera to heal her or something, anything!”
“Lad, there’s nothing you could have done. You have to accept that. She’s dead lad, and as much as it pains you to admit it, she’s gone. I know all to well what you must be going through, but you can’t blame those who had nothing to do with it.”
“Kiba...my mate, my love, is dead. Do you really think I’m in the mood for apologizing or being kind to anyone?”
Kiba sighed and looked back out of the room. He saw Aurora, Shadow, and Simera standing outside grouped together. All of them were sad and crying as they looked at Kiba. Kiba turned back to Alex. “Why don’t we go outside lad so that Simera and the other’s can clean her up okay.”
“No, I’m not leaving her. I’m not going to leave her again,” Alex said softly.
“Lad, I know you want to be with her, but you can’t stay here. It won’t be good for you to stay here too long.”
“Kiba...I never got to tell her goodbye. I never got to tell her I loved her. You more than anyone know’s how that feels. You more than anyone know’s what kind of Hell I’m going through right now. So I’d appreciate it if you’d leave me the Hell alone.”
“Lad, don’t do this to yourself,.” Kiba said placing his arm on Alex’s shoulder. Alex quickly brushed Kiba’s hand off his shoulder, at the same time throwing his right arm out at Kiba. Alex backhanded Kiba away from him sending Kiba sailing into the far wall. Everyone outside saw what happened and was shocked by Alex’s reaction. No one could believe that Alex had actually just done what he had. Never before had Alex ever struck at Kiba. Him doing so now only signified their worst fears.
Kiba stood shakily, wiping the blood from his mouth as he did so. “Alex, don’t let your emotions consume you.”
“Kiba shut the Hell up!” Alex said turning his head and facing Kiba. Alex’s eyes were solid white as he spoke. Kiba could feel Alex’s demonic energy pulsing, his emotions adding fuel to his powers. Kiba knew that now was not the time to argue with him. With Alex emotionally unstable there was no telling what he might do.
“Alex, if you need me or anyone else just call okay. We’re all here for you.”
“Just leave me alone,” Alex said softly. His hair cascaded all around him and Brittany as he laid his head on his chest. Kiba’s heart ached at the sight of Alex’s pain, and for the loss of Brittany. Despite this he knew he must be strong.
The lad is the one who’s truly hurting right now. Having all of us crying and sobbing won’t help him any. I’m honestly afraid to see what this will do to him. The only person he ever truly trusted with his heart has just been ripped away from him. I had the support of my clan, and even though Alex has us, I’m sure he won’t come to us if he needed to. He’s already hiding himself behind his mask again. Shielding himself from the outside world. It will only be a matter of time before he regresses completely.
Kiba stepped back and looked at Alex one last time before turning to leave. “As you wish, but if you need us we’ll be right here.”
Kiba pulled the door shut behind him closing off the sound of Alex’s mournful cries. Kiba closed his eyes and breathed a silent prayer before heading to the group before him. Aurora was the first to break the morbid silence that seemed to engulf them.
“Will he be okay?” Aurora asked softly.
“Only time will tell lass. Only time will tell,” Kiba replied glancing back at the door knowing Alex was on the other side calling for his lost love.

It was in those fateful moments that I realized how feeble life really is. Paradise, eternal happiness was within my grasp, or so it seemed. I had the love of my life beside me. We were happy, we were together, we were in love. I was going to be a father. It was in those moments of sadness that the reality of life came to me. Words such as paradise and love, they are nothing but words. Everything you hold dear can be ripped away from you in one fateful second. A second is all it takes to kill your future. A second is all it takes to lose it all. I am truly all alone in this world once again. In those seconds my eyes were opened to my own weakness. There’s only so much a husband can do to save his wife. There’s only so much a father can do to save his child.
For three day’s Alex stayed by Brittany’s side. For three day’s his thoughts were plagued by his own weakness, and of the lose of his love. It was in his darkest hour, the moment to where he couldn’t find a reason for living, that a new thought entered his head. At first he was scared by the thought. It was a thought that had been the ruin of many men. All of them falling prey to false power. Despite Alex’s mental warning’s his logic was thrust aside replaced by his intense emotions. The more he thought about it, the more it made sense.
A husband cannot save his wife. A father cannot save his child. One who controls life and death can save all. Those who have the power to take a life, also have the power to save a life. I have taken many lives and I have saved many lives. Now it is time that I save those who mean the most to me. Only a god could have the power over life and death. So to bring her back, and to save the life of my unborn child, I will become a god. A powerful mage would know more about raising the dead than I would. Tomorrow...tomorrow I will begin my quest.
Alex gently stroked Brittany’s cheek before whispering in her ear. “I cannot live without you. You were and you still are my life. When you died, a part of me died with you. That is why I know what I must do. I don’t care what anyone else thinks. You are the only person that matters to me. If I have to strike down God himself I will, if it means I get you back. No matter what the cost, no matter what the sacrifice; I will bring you back.”

On the third day after Brittany’s tragic death the entire castle was in mourning. Kiba had contacted Rire and told him about all that had happened. Rire was called to be one of the members of an elder council, but promised to be there as soon as he could. Baou, Yaza, and Scriar were in the middle of a training exercise and were unable to come. Kiba was surprised that Baou actually seemed upset about Brittany’s death. Kiba had finished contacting everyone and upon seeing Aurora, told her to take Alex up some dinner.
“You know he won’t eat it. He hasn’t left her side for three days. I don’t think he’s even slept! He’s like a living statue, frozen in time at the moment of her death,” Aurora said siting down and sighing. It was obvious that she was still upset about Brittany’s death, but that she was trying her best to hide it. “He’s afraid that if he leaves her then he will have to face the fact that she’s really dead. It’s as if he’s given up hope on life. As if he’s joined her in the after life.”
“Aye, but still we mustn’t give up hope on him. We haven’t lost him yet. Go ahead and take his food up to him and let me know if anything’s changed.”
Aurora nodded solemnly and picked up the tray containing Alex’s food. She made her way upstairs as usual, but the moment she passed by Alex’s room and saw the door open she knew something had happened. Aurora hesitantly walked into Alex’s room, seeing the door to his study open she sat the tray of food on one of his tables and slowly walked towards the door. Aurora peeked inside Alex’s study to see Alex hovering over several books flipping through pages madly. Aurora couldn’t believe how intently he stared at the pages, it was as if his very life depended on what was in those pages. Aurora was shocked as she immediately recognized the books Alex was looking through.
Those are the Archmage’s spell books. I forgot that after the mage’s found out about Alex’s origin’s they gave him all of the Archmage’s spell books. They said it was his birthright to own them. Why would Alex have need of them now?
Alex finally noticed Aurora’s presence in the room and looked up at her with burning eyes. “What do you want?”
Aurora was taken back by his tone but quickly recovered. “I was bringing you your breakfast. When I saw your bedroom door was opened I thought you might be in here so I let myself in.”
“I’m not hungry,” Alex stated turning his attention back to the spell books before him.
“Alex you have to eat. You’ll make yourself sick if you don’t.”
“That doesn’t matter,” Alex replied. He then slammed one of the spell books shut and threw it in frustration. “Damn it! Where in the Hell is it?”
“What are you looking for? Maybe I can help you find it,” Aurora offered, trying to be of some help to him.
Alex looked at her as if she had lost her mind. “No, you wouldn’t even begin to understand these.”
“How will I know unless you tell me. What is it that you’re looking for?”
“Just leave me be. I can do this on my own.”
Aurora realized there was no point in arguing with him. Alex had once again closed himself off from everyone. Aurora burst out of the room furious with the way Alex was acting. He’s using Brittany’s death as an excuse to act like an asshole! What could be so important that he would leaver her side?
It was then that Aurora realized that if Alex was in his study, no one was with Brittany. Aurora stopped and quickly turned around. Heading towards the room that had held Brittany’s body Aurora slowly opened the door and peered in. What she saw shocked her. Brittany was laying on the bed in a solid white dress. The blood and everything else had been cleaned from her. Aurora didn’t know when Alex had managed to do this, but inwardly she was pleased that it seemed he had finally accepted her passing. Tears welled up in Aurora’s eyes as she stared at her friend laying on the bed knowing that she was truly gone. Aurora walked forwards and gently touched Brittany’s arm. When she did she received another shock. The entire outer layer around Brittany was covered in icy barrier. Aurora’s heart froze as she heard Alex behind her.
“A time suspension spell. One of Alcadan’s. It seems that I finally found a use for it.”
Aurora turned around to face Alex who was holding on tightly to a spell book. “Why did you do this?”
“To put it simply, so that her body would not decay.”
Aurora knew that there was more to it than that. Despite her fear and unknowing at what Alex would do in the state he was in she pressed for more answers. “Alex, what are you planning to do?”
Alex looked up at her, and it was in that moment that Aurora caught a glimpse of the pain that Alex was hiding. It was only for a moment, but that moment was enough for her to see that he was in his own personal Hell. Alex looked back at Brittany and smiled softly. “Isn’t it obvious. I’m going to bring her back to life.”
Aurora’s blood ran cold the moment she heard those words. She shook her head slowly unable to believe that Alex had really said what he had. “No, you can’t be serious.”
“I have never been more serious about anything in my life. I will bring her back.”
“That’s impossible Alex! Do you know how many men and demon’s alike have tried to raise the dead? All of them have failed. They were either driven insane trying to or ended up sacrificing their lives only to fail.”
“Alcadan managed to bring me back. So why in the Hell shouldn’t I be able to bring her back?”
“But that’s different! He was a skilled mage, and he had the help of a skilled necromancer. Do you honestly think you’d be able to master the art to resurrect her soul? It’s not just about bringing her body back to life, that you could do with necromancy. To bring her soul back is another story. Besides, the Archmage, your father, wasn’t able to bring your body back. He was able to give you life and a soul, but even then it wasn’t a complete success.”
“I am alive, that is all I need to know. I don’t care what the price is to bring her back. I will do it no matter what the cost. Her body is there, that means all I have to do is return her soul to it. As long as it is suspended in time it will not decay which means she will be able to return to it at anytime.”
“Alex, what you’re suggesting is necromancy. An art that was forbidden. Forbidden by you, or don’t you remember?”
“No, necromancy was forbidden by Razriel. Aurora, if I could bring Brittany back, that means that I could bring anyone back to life. Think about it. I alone would control the power’s of life and death. You would never have to fear about losing Shadow. I could bring Celeste back to Kiba. What is wrong about that?”
“The fact that to bring life back their must be cost. You cannot give life without giving up something. For the Archmage to bring you back to life he had to kill a hundred demons to do so. You can’t honestly think that you’d be able to get Brittany back without sacrificing a life do you?”
Alex’s calm composure scared the Hell out of Aurora. His eyes glared at her, revealing the truth of his words. “A hundred demons, that is but a small price to pay to have her back. If it takes death to bring her back, then I have no problem with that.”

Author's Note: Okay, I need a little bit of advice from you guys. Do you think I should prolong the time when Brittany dies? You know, add a little more about how happy her and Alex are, before I rip it all away? Let me know what you guys think, I'll gladly accept any advice you'd be willing to give.
