Fan Fiction ❯ Trancending Death ❯ Hunting ( Chapter 15 )
[ Y - Young Adult: Not suitable for readers under 16 ]
Alex ran through the woods at blinding speeds. The darkness hindered him little as he ran; his glowing blue eyes took in every detail and allowed him to continue without falter. His feet struck the ground lightly, not even disturbing the leaves beneath him. He moved like a dark phantom through the woods. His darting figure more like a ghost that flew across the ground.
Alex stopped to rest, only to reread the book that Raza had given to him. Alex flipped open the book, and with shaking hands read over the material once more. There’s no mistake about it. To resurrect one person, both body and soul, I will have to take life to give life. A sacrifice of human souls is required to resurrect her. One hundred souls to bring back one person. At one time I would’ve laughed at that ratio. Now, I just want to get her back no matter what the cost. The spell doesn’t state how many souls are required to bring a child back, however. I’ll bring Brittany back first and after I’ve done that successfully, then I’ll start hunting for more souls to bring our child back.
Alex didn’t rest long. After he had finished checking the notes he started back out. He was downwind, enabling him to catch the scent of any possible threat ahead of him. As fate would have it not long into his journey Alex caught whiff of a particular scent. Well now, if things continue like this, it won’t take me long at all. I was going to wait until I got towards the central realm. There are more humans along there than any other place in this realm. The towns will be easier to pick off, at least that way I won’t have to search for them. Still, I can smell at least three humans up ahead, along with about four demons. For them to be this far out in the woods they can’t be up to any good. This will give me a head start in what all I need to do.
Alex silently positioned himself behind a tree and gazed into a clearing a few feet in front of him. There, just as he had predicted, were three humans who were traveling with four demon companions. Alex’s ears perked up as he overheard portions of their conversation.
“We made a killing today,” one of the humans exclaimed with a raspy laugh. Alex noted that his clothes were nothing more than rags, but beneath them he had on armor.
“In more ways than one,” a large green demon, with yellow spikes jutting off of his shoulders and back, replied.
“This is great, the boss is going to rewards us for this,” another demon added. This demon had dark brown skin that covered with many scars. Unlike the others, all he wore was brown pants and a strap across his chest which had an enormous sword attached to it. The way the others flocked around him gave Alex the indication that this one was the leader of these men.
Alex was waiting for the group to near him before he made his move. Suddenly, the leader of the group stopped and sniffed the air. He turned in the direction of Alex and yelled. “Balfour, get him!”
Alex heard the sound of rushing wings above him. He mentally cursed himself for not being more alert to his surroundings. He felt a rush of wind graze past his cheek as he instinctively launched himself to the side to avoid being attacked by this unseen foe. The moment he hit the ground, Alex quickly surveyed the sky to see who had attacked him. His eyes rested upon a rather large hawk demon, who was perched upon a tree glaring down at him. The demon was dressed in matching garbs, similar to those of the humans and demons Alex had spied upon. The demon raised his taloned hand and licked the blood of it. It was then that Alex felt the warm blood flowing from his cheek.
“Whoever you are, you made a mistake in coming across us,” the hawk demon named Balfour announced. He spread his large wings out to either side of him and launched himself at Alex.
This time Alex was prepared for the demon, and the moment he struck out at Alex with his talons Alex grabbed hold of them.
“Now we shall see who has made the mistake,” Alex replied venomously. He tried to strike out at Balfour with his free arm, but the moment he did Balfour arched his back and raised his wings up high into the air. Alex saw a glint of metal being reflected by the sun that crept through the branches of the dark forest. Seeing this, Alex barely had time to react and change his offensive attack into a defensive counter. Alex flung his right arm out to the side, and released his grip on Balfour at the same time. He used his momentum to send him twirling away from Balfour and away from the metal blades. Even as Alex spun in air he felt the searing pain of blades raking through his back and tearing into his flesh.
Alex slammed into a tree, back first, knocking the breath out of him. He was dazed only momentarily, but that was all it took for Balfour to close in the gap and land before him. Alex now saw where the blades were and cursed himself even more for being so stupid and for not suspecting it. There were several blades extending from Balfour’s wings. Each one was jagged and hooked, and looked as if they were retractable.
Balfour noticed Alex looking at his wings and chuckled. “You were smarter than I thought. You reacted to my shadow weapons nicely. Most would’ve been mincemeat by now. For that, I will kill you the benefit of an honorable death.”
“Heh, spare me the bull shit,” Alex snapped. He stood to his feet and glared at Balfour. He could hear the footsteps of the others closing in on them and knew that if he didn’t finish of Balfour quickly then he would have to take them all on at once.
“Fine, then. If you will not accept my generous offer, you can die like a dog!”
Balfour launched himself backwards and took flight. He rose into the air and was preparing to launch himself at Alex. The moment he did Alex smirked.
“Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Fool me three times and you’re dead!”
Balfour’s eyes widened in surprise as Alex transformed in an instant. His clothes changed to ebony skin that covered with red tattoo’s and his eyes turned solid white. Balfour tried to halt his attack, but before he was able to, Alex was upon him. Alex launched himself at the quickly descending form of Balfour, and before Balfour could react, Alex had reached him. Alex grabbed hold of both of Balfour’s wings and effortlessly ripped them out of his back. Balfour screamed in pain, but even that didn’t last long. Alex grabbed Balfour by the neck as they came crashing to the ground. With a simple jerk, Alex broke Balfour’s neck. He left the crumpled body of Balfour lying on the forest floor. The others had heard Balfour’s scream and hurried to him. Alex quickly reverted back to his human form and awaited the new arrivals.
There’s no need to reveal myself just yet. Luckily these clothes are made to transform with me, otherwise I might be in a bind. If I can help it I’d like to keep my identity a secret until I find out all that I need from these people. That bird demon said something about shadow weapons. If I’m right, I might be able to kill of a few more low lives before this day is over with, Alex thought with a grim expression.
It was seconds later that the forms of several people broke through the dark forest. Alex could tell that they were professionals by the way they were accessing the situation. One of the humans ran over to check the demon’s vitals, while the others spread out and searched for whoever killed them. It was their leader who turned and looked into the darkened part of the tree, where Alex had concealed himself, and ordered. “Come out you coward! First you kill one of my men, and then you hide when we come to get revenge!”
“Who said I was hiding? Besides, if my guess is correct, these are not your men,” Alex replied calmly. “You work for the Cult of Rajah, do you not?”
The demon chuckled as he gazed at Alex. “You’re a scrawny thing aren’t you? Still, your demonic powers are impressive, even if you are trying to suppress them. What do you know about the Cult of Rajah?”
“I know it is an assassin’s guild. One who’s members swear loyalty to their leader and follow his commands without question. All of the members are trained killers who specialize in shadow weapons. Each has the skill to take on a hundred demons and live to tell the tale, supposedly even the human members of your organization can stand their own in a battle.”
The demon’s eyes widened with surprise at Alex’s knowledge about their organization. His confidence faltered for a second before beginning. “Well now, if you know so much, why are so foolish to take us all on at once?”
“I don’t want to fight you,” Alex stated.
“Hah, so you are a coward after all!”
“No, I don’t want to fight you,” Alex repeated. He then pointed towards the humans who had gathered around the body of Balfour. “My only interest is in the humans.”
“Why is that? Are you not man enough to take us all?”
“Heh, if you choose to fight me you will quickly find that I am far from a man,” Alex said in a cold tone. His eyes glowed for a second, and in that second everyone saw their own deaths in his eyes.
It was because of this sudden irrational fear that the large demon drew his sword from his back. “You will die before killing another one of us.”
Alex looked towards the humans and then to the demons. Alex smirked as he called out the humans. “Don’t run away now, I’m going to deal with your friends here then I’ll be back for you.”
“Don’t think us so easily beaten. You may have defeated one of us, that alone was a miracle. Still, you could not beat all of us at once. So, you’re either crazy or have a death wish to try and fight us.”
“I’m not crazy, but I am possessed,” Alex remarked with a chuckle. His chuckle was chilling and sent shivers down the assassin’s spines as they heard it. It was that chuckle that broke their last resolve. Two of the demons drew their weapons and launched themselves at Alex.
The first demon moved with lightning precision, launching a metal chain with spikes and blades covering it, straight at Alex’s chest. Alex twisted his left arm, grabbed hold of one of the blades, and let the chain wrap around his arm. The blades dug deep into his skin, holding fast like a vise. Alex grabbed hold of the chain with his right arm and quickly pulled the chain towards him. The demon was taken off guard by Alex’s sudden movements and was pulled, with the chain, towards Alex. The moment the demon neared him, Alex used his right arm to twirl the loose chain in the air. Before the demon realized it, the chain had wrapped around his neck. He tried in vain, to free himself from the spikes, which had penetrated his esophagus. He felt the chain tighten suddenly and he looked back towards Alex. The demon’s eyes widened with surprise as Alex grinned at him evilly. Alex pulled the chain tightly, pushing the blades further into the demon’s neck and decapitating him.
Alex felt a rush of wind behind him, and twirled the chain around him, hoping to strike at whoever was behind him. The chain wrapped around the middle section of a three sections spear. The demon easily managed to break the chain’s hold on his weapon, and thus launched himself at Alex. Alex quickly ducked and dodged the spear blades that grazed by him at blinding speeds. Alex still had the chain in his hands, and the moment the opportunity presented itself, he wrapped it around the spear, pulling tightly on it causing the sections to fold together. He then launched himself forward and slammed both his fists into the skull of the stunned demon. He hit him with such force that his fists caved in the demon’s skull, spraying blood all over him.
Alex’s face and hair was covered in blood, maybe it was for that reason that when he turned around to face the remaining demons they backed away in fear. His eyes glinted with malice as he spoke. “Come now, as I told you before I am no man. Come, see what a Devil can do!”
