Fan Fiction ❯ Trancending Death ❯ Soul of Love ( Chapter 20 )

[ Y - Young Adult: Not suitable for readers under 16 ]
I had another dream. This time, the man in my dream, was at war with himself. His heart was torn in two. Two separate sides tried to gain control over him. One side cried out that he shouldn’t be doing what he was. While the other side cried out that it was necessary to bring back what he lost. Even though he knew it was wrong, the man continued on, all for the sake of gaining back the thing he had lost. What could be so precious to him, that he would let the darkness taint his pure soul? His heart is being consumed by the darkness, but for the sake of what he lost, he doesn’t care. Why? The light within him, the pure, the good, all of it is dimming, letting the darkness consume him.
Why do I feel this way about him? He is only in my dreams, yet, I feel as if I know him. It pains me to see that he is letting the darkness take hold of him. Does he even know that the darkness is caused by the fact that deep down in his heart, he cannot justify what he is doing? I’m not sure why I feel this way for him. Why do I feel as if I have met him once before? Why can’t I see his face, yet I know it is one of compassion and love? Why do I feel this sense of dread, as if the darkness that consumes him is also consuming me? Why do I feel that if he loses himself to the darkness, I will lose him too? It’s silly considering I never had him to begin with, or did I?
I hear his heart cry out. Even though he doesn’t listen to it, I can hear it. It cries at what he his doing. It cries for the pain he bears. I wish I could share his pain help to ease the suffering of his heart. But the only thing that could ease his suffering is if he can regain what he lost. What is it that he lost? What could mean so much that he would ignore his crying heart. What could mean so much that even though he knows what he is doing is wrong his soul still cries. I hear it, it says ‘I will do it. Even if I must become a Devil to become a God, I will bring her back.’

Alex stared in disbelief at the shimmering form of Brittany in front of him. He couldn’t believe his eyes. His mind told him that it couldn’t be true, he knew he had to be delusional to see what he did. Yet, his heart desperately wanted to believe it to be true.
“Brittany, is it really you?” Alex asked. His voice was trembling but he didn’t care. It took every ounce of restraint he had not to run towards her. Imposter or not he wanted to hold in his arms once more.
Brittany smiled softly as she looked at him. Her smile warmed his heart and brought tears to his eyes. “Silly boy, what do you think?”
At those words Alex’s self composure broke. Tears fell from his eyes as he walked towards her. What he thought would never happen, was now happening. Alex’s voice cracked with emotion as he spoke. “It’s really you, I’m not dreaming. You really are here.”
“Of course I am silly,” Brittany replied with a giggle.
Alex reached out to touch her, but his hand felt nothing but air. Alex’s heart dropped at that moment. He closed his eyes and tried to contain the tears of disappointment that threatened to flow from his face. He opened his eyes slowly, afraid that she would begone when he did. Instead, she was standing there before him, just as she was before.
Alex could tell that she was sad that he was unable to touch her almost as much as he was. Still, at least she was here before him now. “Brittany, I don’t understand. How can this be happening? How can you be here in front of me?”
Brittany’s smile faltered for a second. Her cheerful expression darkened slightly as she spoke. “I’m not sure. I think it could be because of the magic of the necklace. Maybe that’s why I’m here now. Maybe that’s why I’m able to talk to you,” Brittany replied. Alex could tell that there was more to the story, but right now he was so glad to see her that he didn’t care.
“I’ve missed you so much,” Alex whispered. Brittany nodded, tears fell from her eyes now as she spoke.
“I know, I’ve missed you too.”
Alex momentarily forgot that she wasn’t there, and he went to hug her. But once again his hands felt nothing but air. He could feel his composure breaking with every second. Their was a silence between them as they looked into each other’s eyes. A silence that neither wanted to break.
Finally, Alex suddenly realized that Brittany had no idea of what he had been doing since her death. “Don’t worry Britt, I’m going to bring you back.”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean, I’m going to bring you back to life,” Alex said smiling. Feeling this first real glimpse of hope made the terrible events prior to this seem like nothing at all.
“Really! You mean you can bring me back? But how?” Brittany asked. Alex could see the excitement in her eyes and he felt foolish for ever doubting what he was doing.
“Well, your remember how I was brought back to life through necromancy? I believe I’ve found a way to bring you back, just as you are now.”
“Really, oh that’s great! I can’t believe it, I can’t believe that it’s really true,” Brittany said. Tears streamed down her face, and even though they were tears of happiness, Alex still wished he could hold her and wipe her tears away.
“How long do you think it will take till you can bring me back?”
“I’m not sure. There are certain things that I must do in order to perform the spell to bring you back. There are certain ingredients that the spell requires.”
Brittany caught the ominous tone in Alex’s voice and cautiously asked him. “What kind of ingredients.”
Alex’s face darkened at her question. He looked towards the ground, knowing that she deserved an answer. He sighed, wishing he didn’t have to tell her, but knowing he did. Finally, after take a deep breath he told her. “The spell to bring you back requires a sacrifice of human souls. One hundred human souls is the exchange for being able to bring someone back from the dead.”
Brittany’s face darkened at his words. Her words were barely audible as she spoke. “One hundred humans will die because of me. Is there no other way Alex?”
“Brittany, those humans won’t die because of you. They will die because of me. No, there is no other way to bring you back. There’s no other way to bring back our child either. I’ve tried to think of another way, but this is the only way possible. I hope you can forgive me for my selfishness, but I need you back Brittany. I want to hold you again. I would sacrifice anything to bring you back.”
Brittany’s smile was weak, but she nodded none the less. “I know you would, and right now, so would I. I miss you Alex, and soon we can be a family again. Soon, we’ll be together again, right?”
Alex smiled at Brittany, relieved by the fact that she wasn’t yelling at him for what he was doing. She wants this as bad as I do. She wants to come back, she really does.
Alex was finally able to regain his composure before nodded at Brittany. His voice still cracked with emotion as he spoke, but at this point in time he really didn’t care. “Yes, soon we will be a family again.”
“That’s good, but Alex, what will people think of you for what you are doing? What will be people think, knowing that you killed innocent people to bring me back to life? I know them Alex, they won’t take kindly to your actions. Demon Lord or not, they will want you dead.”
Alex nodded, knowing fully well that Brittany’s fears were fears that he himself had wondered about. “Yes, they will. If they find out it was me they will probably want my blood as penance for my sins. That is the reason that even if I do succeed in bringing you back to life, I may not be able to be with you.”
Alex’s heart broke as tears began to stream down Brittany’s face. The heart broken look that etched itself on her beautiful features made Alex look away in shame. “Alex, now you are being selfish. Don’t you think I want to be with you too? Don’t you think I want you to hold me again? Don’t you think I want us to be a family again no matter what the cost? You can’t bring me back and then just leave me again. That would be a fate far more cruel than the fate I am suffering now. I would rather choose dying again, than knowing that I could be alive, but never get to see you or to be with you. Isn’t there someway you can conceal your identity?”
Alex was about to tell her that if there were no witnesses to his actions, then no one would know it was him. It was then that he recalled Senka telling him that one of his men had seen Alex, even overheard everything Alex had said.
Even though I couldn’t sense him, he was there. He heard everything and saw everything. If that were to happen again, and I were to be attacking a village, instead of an organization of assassins, then the whole realm would be after me. Even though humans are still looked up as lower than demons the fact remains that after I gave this realm back some of its former glory, all races began to help one another. The demons would be mad at the fact that I slaughtered their kind, the humans would be mad that I slaughtered their kind. Then they will both work together to bring me to justice.

Author's Note: Well...really don't have much to say. School's out in 2 weeks, so I'll be able to work on the story a lot more often then. Hope you guys like the update, please review if you get the chance. I'd really appreciate some feedback so that I know what to improve and all that stuff. Well, take care, kudos!
