Fan Fiction ❯ Trancending Death ❯ Only One Choice ( Chapter 25 )
[ Y - Young Adult: Not suitable for readers under 16 ]
Aurora and Shadow stood together holding each other beneath the covering of the trees. Neither one of them had wanted to let the other go. Each one needed comforting after all the events that had transpired. Neither one had gotten any sleep, each plagued by thoughts of the past and dreams of the future. Aurora was first to break the tranquil silence between the two lovers.
“I couldn’t sleep. Every time I closed my eyes, I kept seeing images of Brittany. She kept calling to me, asking me to stop Alex. She was crying, I couldn’t stand it! Why is this happening? Why is everything going so badly? I mean, why did all this have to happen?”
“I’m not sure. I’m not sure, but I know that something is happening. Something dark has taken over the castle. I can feel it. All last night my dreams were haunted as were yours. Still, unlike you I couldn’t sleep. I wondered the halls last night, and no matter where I went, it was like something evil had grasped my heart and wouldn’t release it.”
“What’s happening to us Shadow? What’s happening to everyone? I know the others in the castle can feel it as well, though I doubt they can feel it as strongly as we can. The moment Alex left, after we had talked to Brittany, it was then that this overwhelming sense of dread captured me. I’m not sure what to do. Better yet, I’m not sure what I am supposed to do. Brittany’s spirit is pleading with us to stop Alex, but do you really think it would be possible or even sane to try and stop him? You saw what he almost did to Kiba for even suggesting the fact that he might stand against him. Alex would kill us. I know in my heart that if it came down to it, if we stood between him and bringing Brittany back, he would kill us.”
Shadow was silent for a moment. He desperately tried to search his heart for the answers that he knew Aurora needed to hear. Despite his efforts, Shadow couldn’t think of anything comforting or reassuring to say to her. Instead, he simply told her how he felt. “If we stand against him, if we stand against Alex, we will die. I have no doubt in my mind that the Alex we knew, regardless of his intentions, would not kill us. This Alex that has awakened after Brittany’s death however, he is a different story. The darkness that came with him still resides in the castle. It is because of that, that we feel this evil presence. I do not want to fight against Alex, mainly because I know that if I ever lost you, I would probably do the same thing he is doing now. I couldn’t stand to lose you Aurora, if you were to die, I would do everything in my power to bring you back as well.”
Aurora was shocked by what Shadow had just told her. She couldn’t deny that what Shadow was saying did make sense, but the fact that he would actually admit it took her by surprise. “Shadow, don’t talk like that. I’m here beside you, so don’t worry about losing me okay?”
“That’s just it! I still have you beside me, but who does Alex have beside him? He lost part of himself the day Brittany died. So right now he’s not only searching for her, he’s also searching for the himself. The Alex we knew left with Brittany when she died. The question we have to ask ourselves is this. Even if we do go up against Alex, what good will that do? If he kills us, our efforts will be in vain. If we stop him, what good will that bring? We couldn’t kill Alex, even if we had the chance we both know in our hearts that we couldn’t kill someone who’s doing this because he’s in so much pain right now he can’t bear to deal with it. Even if he is stopped, will the darkness that has taken hold of us vanish? Or will is stay within us, even after the darkness has left him?”
“What do you mean?”
“I’m not sure,” Shadow admitted. He sighed and looked through the dense foliage and gazed at the tall towers of the castle that loomed over the horizon. “I’m not sure about anything anymore.”
Aurora was about to agree with him, when she suddenly felt a cold wind brush against her fur. The hair on the back of her neck stood on end, as did Shadow’s. Both felt the other’s muscles tense, as they held each other. The wind lasted only a second, but that second was enough to make the two demon’s hold their breath in anticipation. It was in that moment of silence that a soft voice was heard. The voice was barely above a whisper, but the sound of the voice made both demon’s hearts stop cold. Their eyes met for a brief second, but that was long enough to confirm what they were thinking. They slowly let go of each other, and turned to look behind them. There standing behind them, was the glowing form of Brittany. She was wearing the same clothes she had on when she died, and her face was wet with tears. Even now as she stood before them, she could not stop the silent tears that streamed from her face.
“Brittany...,” Aurora said in a whisper. She stood staring at the translucent form of her friend. She was both scared and worried to see Brittany as she was.
“Why...why haven’t you stopped him?” Brittany asked. Her voice was full of pain and sorrow. Her face was a mask of sadness. It broke both the demon’s hearts to see her as she was. “The longer you wait, the more he falls deeper and deeper into the darkness. You can’t wait any longer or he’ll never come back!”
“What do you mean, he’ll never come back?” Aurora asked. Stepping forward towards Brittany.
“The longer Alex continues this, the more his soul will fall to darkness. I can no longer sense him, I can no longer feel him because he is already being consumed by the darkness. The more he kills, the more he kills trying to bring me back, the easier it is for the darkness to consume him. You’ve got to go after him, you’ve got to get him to stop.”
“How can we do that? You know as well as us, that there’s no way we could hope to defeat him. Alex is the Demon Lord, if we try to stop him, he’ll tear us to shreds. Is there some other way that we can stop him?” Shadow asked. Gathering up his courage he stood beside Aurora, only a few steps away from the glowing form of Brittany.
“You can try to talk some reason into him, if you believe you can. I am not asking you to kill Alex, Shadow. I am begging you to just stop him from doing this. There are whispers among some of the people where I am. If what they say is true, then stopping Alex will not only save him from himself, it will also save you as well.”
“Save us as well? How? If we go after him, we’ll be putting our lives in danger,” Shadow argued.
“Shadow, let her talk. Can’t you see how hard this is on her!” Aurora snapped. Shadow was shocked at how Aurora was acting, but nodded and quieted himself until Brittany finished talking.
“The rumors I have heard do not hold well for anyone who lives within the borders of the Demon Realm. One of the elders had declared that Alex’s heart, his very being, is somehow connected with the heart of the realm. Do either one of you know if this is true?”
Both Aurora and Shadow exchanged wide eyed glances. Each wondering how Brittany could know what they had only just learned the night before. Aurora slowly looked back at Brittany and replied. “Yes, a mage told us that Alex’s heart was connected to the heart of this realm. He told us that due to Alex’s suppressed emotions, the heart of the realm was acting out on those emotions. I can’t remember exactly how he described it, but he said that Alex must have a good heart, for the heart of this realm to cry for him.”
Brittany nodded as if confirming what she had already thought. “Then I’m afraid what they are saying is true. To be honest, I’d never heard anything about a world having a heart before, not until I got here of course. So when I first heard them I wasn’t sure whether or not to believe them. Now it seems I don’t have much choice but to believe them.”
“Brittany, please just tell us what is going on. Why did you say that if we didn’t stop Alex, are lives would be in danger?” Shadow asked. Aurora looked at him sharply, but her eyes softened as she realized she too wanted to know. She realized that Shadow had restrained himself for as long as he could and that he couldn’t wait any longer to find out what was going on.
Brittany sighed softly and looked at the two demons. “I am sorry, but if what the others say is true, then if Alex is not stopped soon, all of Demon Realm will be destroyed.”
“What!” Shadow and Aurora said in unison.
“What do you mean the Demon Realm will be destroyed? How could that be? One man’s actions, surely couldn’t result in something that would destroy us!” Shadow exclaimed.
“When you informed me that Alex’s heart and the heart of the realm were indeed connected, it confirmed my fears. Listen to me, if Alex’s heart becomes corrupted by the darkness of his own actions, then the heart of this realm will become corrupted as well. In a manner of speaking, Alex’s heart is the heart of this realm. Just as if Alex’s heart gives in to the darkness, the Alex we know will no longer exist, his heart will no loner exist. If the heart of this realm gives into the darkness, its heart, will no longer exist. The realm will literally break apart and collapse from the inside out. So if Alex’s heart gives in to the darkness, this world, and all those who inhabit it, shall perish. You will all die, because a world without a heart cannot survive.”
Shadow and Aurora stood shocked and stunned by what Brittany had just told them. Neither one knew how to handle this new revelation. When Aurora finally found her voice after hearing that she couldn’t control the fear that had once again began to grasp her heart.
“So, the only thing we can do to save this realm, is to defeat Alex?”
Brittany shook her head sadly. “I’m afraid, that is te only way.”
“To save ourselves, we will have to fight our friend,” Shadow said. The sound of disapproval in his voice was only matched by the sound of fear.
Once again Brittany nodded, but this time she added something else. “If you cannot stop him and bring some sense to him, the only chance you will have to save this realm, is if you end his life.”
