[ Y - Young Adult: Not suitable for readers under 16 ]
Alex twisted his body, just as Baou’s spear came coursing up through the ground beneath his feet. His aura shield protected his body from the blade, but he knew that was what Rire was counting on. Just as he predicted, Rire had already launched himself at Alex once again. Alex wasn’t able to stop Rire as Rire flew past him, hitting him in the chest once again. Still, Alex wasn’t about to let Rire get a free hit on him without suffering some consequence. Alex grabbed hold of the spear and pulled it out of the ground. He spun it around as Rire passed him, the blunt end connected with Rire’s already broken ribs, sending him crashing toward the ground.
Alex then launched the spear at Baou, who was already prepared to rush him. Baou twisted his body and caught the spear with his left hand, the moment he did so however, he was sent sailing backwards and crashing through some trees. The force at which Alex threw it, carried him back a good ways, at the same time wrenching his shoulder out of place.
Rire coughed up blood as he watched Baou get thrown deeper into the woods. Shit, I don’t have much time left. We’ve got to do something quickly. Alex’s shield makes it nearly impossible for me to get through to him, unless I have Baou’s help. Wait, Alex’s shield, that might be a way to keep Alex from pummeling me to death until Baou gets back. His shield is self conscious, acting on its own will. So, let’s see how he likes it when I even the odds.
Alex had already turned toward Rire, and had already started heading in his direction when Rire slammed his fist into the ground and started casting another spell. Alex quicky sped up, aiming to stop Rire before he could finish the spell.
“Tate no sabure!” Rire yelled. Just as Alex was about to slash at Rire, a wall of sand erupted in front of him. Alex decimated the wall of sand, but it was still enough to halt his attack.
That ought to give me some leeway. The sand with act as a conscious shield for me, at least long enough for Baou to get back.
No sooner had Rire thought that, than he heard another explosion to the side of him. He turned to the wall of sand be blown apart by the sheer force of Alex’s attack. There was another explosion, barely a second after the first, now to Rire’s left side. Then there was another, right behind him. Each time the explosions were getting closer and closer together. Each time the wall of sand erupted closer and closer to where Rire stood.
Shit, he’s too fast! The shield can’t keep up with him! Now that he’s also using some of his own demonic power, he’s in a completely different league, Rire thought. He was already anticipating what his next move should be, when the wall of sand erupted once again, this time just inches away from Rire’s face. Rire watched in horror as Alex’s fist collided with the wall, decimating it, and at the same time breaking through it. Alex’s fist grazed Rire’s nose, right before he suddenly disappeared.
Rire heard another explosion behind him. He already knew what it was, even as he turned around to face him. Rire’s eyes widened in fear as he saw Alex lunging at him through the wall of sand. The sand hadn’t even had enough time to fully rise before Alex was through it. It was forming around Alex’s body as he lashed out at Rire. Alex’s clawed fist, slammed into Rire’s face sending vibrations throughout all of Rire’s body. The power from Alex’s punch sent Rire sailing toward another group of trees. Blood poured from Rire’s face. He wasn’t sure, but he thought Alex might’ve broken his jaw. He already knew that his nose was broken.
Alex didn’t have a chance to continue his attack on Rire, before he heard the sound of rushing wings behind him. He turned to see Baou rocketing out of the forest, his spear aimed for Alex’s chest. Alex jumped toward Baou, twisting in mid air and catching Baou’s spear with his left hand. He used the force of his spin to let his right foot connect with the side of Baou’s head. Baou was sent flying next to Rire’s bruised and battered body. Baou’s face was covered in blood, and Rire’s ribs and face were both mangled. Alex had already won. He knew it, and they knew it. They had all known the outcome of this battle, before it had even begun. Yet, despite all rational thinking, neither one of the two warriors he was facing, were ready to give up. Both of them wearily got to their feet in an attempt to stand.
“Why do you stand once again? Your fate in inevitable. Why do you continue, when you know you’re just going to get knocked down once more?” Alex asked.
“Because, we’re the good guys this time, Alex. Not you! You once said that the good guys always win, that means, that regardless of what happens to us, the good guys in the end will win. We’re going to die, we know that, but we’re not about to die before doing what we set out to do. I don’t know what happened to you Alex. I don’t know where you lost your way. I don’t know what is possessing you, but I do know that I feel sorry for you,” Baou stated, spitting blood out of his mouth as he did so.
“Heh, you feel sorry for me? I am not the one who is about to die,” Alex replied coldly.
“Yeah, I feel sorry for you. I feel sorry for you, because despite all your boasting, and your knew power, you’re worse off now than when you were mourning Brittany’s death. You’re worse off, because not only have you forgotten who you are, you’ve also forgotten Brittany in the process of all this.”
A feral growl escaped Alex’s lips at Baou’s words. “What the Hell do you mean I’ve forgotten her? She is the very reason I’m dong this!”
“No, you know Brittany wouldn’t want you to do this. So, don’t give me that bullshit. I only knew her for a little while, but that was all it took to realize what kind of person she was. It only took that long to realize what kind of person she had turned you into. You’re no longer that person Alex, and by losing yourself, you’ve forgotten her. So, that is why I feel sorry for you. I feel sorry for you, because even if you succeed in bringing her back, you will have already lost her.”
“Shut up!” Alex roared. In the blink of an eye, Alex disappeared.
Baou could sense Alex running toward them. He quickly grabbed onto Rire’s hand and launched them both into the air. Baou saw as Alex struck the place where they had just been. An enormous crater formed beneath Alex’s fist, destroying the ground and shattering several trees around the area. Alex looked at the two with nothing but hate in his eyes.
“You have any ideas?” Baou asked, ensuring that he flew out of Alex’s reach as he did so.
“Launch me into the air,” Rire stated.
“What?”
“Just trust me.”
Baou didn’t even need to think about trusting Rire at this point. Without any hesitation he threw Rire higher into the air.
Rire reached for all his remaining arrows and pulled them out of his quiver. He threw them all into the air, casting a spell as he did so. “Ayasturiningyo ya!”
The arrows suddenly halted in midair. They glowed a light blue, as did Rire’s eyes. Rire pointed at Alex with his right hand, his left hand kept close to his chest as he concentrated on the spell. The arrows moved and all pointed at Alex.
Baou caught onto what Rire was about to do. Thus, he began charging his spear with as much demonic energy as he could muster. His spear crackled with energy, more so than he had ever placed in it before. He was breathing heavily now, due to expanding so much energy in such a short amount of time. He looked over at Rire and smirked. “I’ll follow your lead.”
“Throw it a second after I launch my arrows,” Rire ordered without looking at him. He paused before continuing. “Okay, let’s do this!”
Rire thrust his hand in Alex’s direction, at the same time all the arrows quickly began descending upon Alex’s form.
Just as Rire had instructed, Baou waited until Rire had launched all his arrows, before launching his spear. Baou reared his arm back, tensed his muscles, and then launched his spear. It rocketed towards Alex, demonic energy crackling all around it.
Baou then flew toward the descending form of Rire. He spun around in midair, taking hold of Rire as he did so. “Okay elf boy, you’re on. Let me speed things up for you.” Baou then launched Rire toward Alex, in the trail of the arrows and Baou’s spear.
Alex saw the arrows coming at him, and quickly readied his demonic aura. He released a shockwave to decimate most of the arrows, which to his surprise burst into another cloud of thick smoke. His aura shield managed to deflect some of them, but what it couldn’t deflect was the enormous projectile coming straight for his chest. On instinct, Alex quickly released some of his own demonic aura and grabbed hold of the spinning spear, letting his and Baou’s demonic aura’s clash.
Rire knew he couldn’t miss this opportunity. He flew towards the ground, slamming his fist into the rock hard earth to redirect his position so that he would be sent underneath Alex’s arms. Rire ricocheted toward Alex’s chest. He passed right beneath Alex’s arms, which were focused on keeping Baou’s spear at bay. Thus, allowing him to place the fourth mark. Had he not been going so fast, he might’ve been able to place the fifth. As it was, he was lucky to be able to place the fourth. Still, he knew that if he had been going any slower, Alex could’ve stopped him.
Alex saw Rire coming toward him. He felt Rire hit him in the chest again. He watched as Rire passed him, and he knew that he had Rire where he wanted him. Alex suddenly released more his demonic power, quickly stopping Baou’s spear and allowing him to grab hold of it. Alex turned faster than Rire had predicted, and stabbed the spear through Rire’s chest!
