Hearing that name, the girl’s interest in this strange man clad all in black, seemed to intensify. “How do you know my name?”
Alex felt the wrap that was around his face, begin to dampen as his silent tears began to fall against it. “You speak of the Lord so fondly. But surely you must know that he is the reason your parents died.”
The girl shook her head after hearing this. “No, my parents died serving the Lord. They didn’t die because of him. The Lord was a good Lord, and my parents were good people. He wouldn’t kill good people, would he?”
The tears that flowed from Alex’s eyes could not be contained much longer. He knew he had to get rid of this child before he started to lose himself anymore than he already had. Something about this girl’s innocence and naivety, tore his heart to pieces. “Your parents might not have lived long enough to tell you not to talk to strangers, so I will tell you in there stead. You shouldn’t talk to strangers my dear, because this world is full of bad people. Most of which, would love nothing more than to take advantage of your innocence. So please, just go back home.”
“But to me, you don’t seem like a stranger. It’s almost as if I know you from somewhere. I just can’t put my finger on it. Besides, you don’t seem like a bad person.”
“Oh, if you only knew. I am the worst kind of person you could ever meet. I am a monster. One far worse than you could ever imagine.”
“I don’t know about a monster, but you do seem sad. What’s made you so mad, mister?” Cherish asked. Before Alex could stop her, she sat down right next to him beneath the tree.
“I lost someone. Actually, I lost two people very dear to me. That is the reason I am so sad. But just because I am sad, that doesn’t mean I am not a monster.”
“Well, you don’t look like a monster to me. But I’m sorry to hear about those people you lost. Where did you lose them? Maybe I could help you look for them,” Cherish suggested. Her eyes lighting up at the chance to help.
Alex chuckled softly at the girl’s words. Even though she knows of death, I’m not quite sure she comprehends it. But, death is not something that is so easily understood. I for one, wish that I had never had to encounter it. Still, this girl seems far wiser and smarter than I had originally given her credit for.
“Actually, I’m searching for them now. That is what brought me here. I am hoping that I might be able to find them soon,” Alex said softly.
“Oh, okay. Mister, are you blind?”
“Heh, what makes you think I am blind, child?”
“Your eyes are gray. I once saw a beggar that came to our village. He was clothed in all sorts of rags and things, and his eyes were gray like yours. My uncle said it was because he was blind and couldn’t see. So are you? Are you blind?”
“No. I can assure you, I can see just fine,” Alex said with a chuckle.
“Oh, okay. Well that’s good to hear.” Cherish said with a smile. It looked as if there was more she wanted to say, but before she could a voice called out from one of the houses at the edge of the village.
“Cherish! Cherish! Where are you?” a middle-aged woman called out.
Alex could see her as clearly as if she was standing before him. She had long brown hair that was tied up in a bun. She was wearing a rather old looking blue dress and a white apron. She looked almost exactly like Cherish, the only difference was that she had blue eyes whereas Cherish had brown ones. Still, it was unmistakable that this woman was indeed related to her.
“I take it that, that is your aunt?” Alex asked softly.
“Mm-hmm,” Cherish said with a smile. “I’ve got to go now. They’re probably worried about me. Usually I’m back by now.”
“Okay, you don’t want them to worry about you.”
“Mister,” Cherish said in a timid voice.
“Yes?”
Before Alex realized it, Cherish had thrown herself at him and was hugging him tightly. “I hope you find whoever you are looking for. I can tell you miss them just like I miss my mommy and daddy. Never give up in your search for them. I’m sure you’ll find them if you try hard enough.”
Alex slowly brought his arm around and patted the girl on the shoulder. He was unsure of what more to do, but one thing was for certain, this girl had touched his heart in a way that no one had been able to do since Brittany’s death.
“Thank you,” was all that Alex could whisper before the girl got up, picked up her bucket of water, and hurried back into the village.
Alex stared at the girl ran back to her house. Beneath the folds of his mask, a smile was forming and a dreamy look took over his eyes.
“You shouldn’t wish things like that,” a voice said from behind him.
Alex closed his eyes and chuckled softly. “Can you blame me? She’s a sweetheart.”
“Yes, I can. We have our own child, Alex. And since when do Demon Lord’s say ‘sweetheart’?”
Alex looked up to see Brittany standing beside him. “I can’t help it. I killed that girl’s parents, and by all rights it’s a miracle that she herself survived. She had such an innocence about her. How could I not wish that she was my own?”
The look on Brittany’s face mad Alex instantly regret what he had just said. “Well, I guess if you want you could just forget about me and our child. It seems you’ve already found someone to replace our child. It won’t be long before you find someone to replace me.”
Alex closed his eyes and winced at Brittany’s words. “You know that’s not true.”
“Alex, I can tell that you’re unsure about whether or not you should be doing this. Trust me, I know it’s not an easy decision to make. The fact of the matter is, is that I can’t stand being away from you. If this keeps on I swear I’m going to go out of my mind.”
“I know. I miss you too, and Lord knows I want you back. I don’t know what’s wrong with me. Earlier I was so confident about what I was going to do. Now, I just don’t know.”
Brittany could see the sadness and inner turmoil that was building up in Alex as he struggled with what he should do. She silently knelt beside him and wrapped her arms around him, even though he couldn’t feel her, she knew that he enjoyed the gesture just the same. “Alex, you know I would never make you do anything that you want to. Especially something such as this. So, please, please don’t think for a second that you have to do this for me. I love you, Alex. If I have to remain like this forever so that your soul won’t be tainted, then I will do this.”
“You would live like this forever? Being unable to touch me, unable to kiss me, or to really even be with me. I know that I could not stand that. I know that it’s driving me crazy that I can’t have you in my arms right now. I can’t believe that you would honestly be able to stay like that. I mean, if you are willing to live your life...or rather your afterlife, right by my side; but in reality, we’ll be worlds apart. I couldn’t touch you, or even feel you. Not to mention we’d never be able to hold our child, or even see it for that matter. If you are willing to do that, to give away all that just for my soul to rest easy, then you really are one crazy female,” Alex said with a small smile.
Brittany shook her head and smiled. “So, you’re saying that me staying like this, is worse than sacrificing the lives of all those humans? If so, you’re the crazy one, Alex. I’m telling you, if it’ll make you feel better, I’ll stay like this. I don’t mind. Just as long as you can still smile, it’ll be worth it.”
Despite what Brittany said, Alex could tell that she was lying. He knew that she wanted to come back more than anything else in this world. She went through the pains of childbirth and never got to see her child. She never even got to hold it in her arms or be called a mom. She deserved that if nothing more. That was the very least that Alex could do for the woman who had captivated his heart. Not only could she not hold her child, but she was constantly by her lover’s side, and never even able to touch him. He knew this pain better than anyone. For even now his body burned to be with her, but of course, as she was now, that was impossible.
“How in the Hell do you think I could smile, knowing that the love of my life was always by my side, but I could never touch her? You would be with me all the time, but I could never hold you, I could never kiss you, I could never make love to you. Not to mention the fact that I would never be able to hold my child. A child that both me and you created. That wouldn’t be fair to any of us. Surely, you must realize that despite our best intentions, that I must do this. I can’t live without you, nor could I live knowing that I gave up the chance to be a father. Brittany, we will be a family again. I will bring you back. Even if I will be haunted by the nightmares of my actions, I will do this for both me and you. I will bring you back, and I will bring our child back. This, is but a small price to pay for happiness. This is a price, I will gladly pay. It is nothing compared to our happiness.”
Author's Note: Is it just me, or does everytime Brittany gets around him, Alex goes a wee bit psycho?
Alex felt the wrap that was around his face, begin to dampen as his silent tears began to fall against it. “You speak of the Lord so fondly. But surely you must know that he is the reason your parents died.”
