The look of joy that overtook every ounce of Brittany’s demeanor, made Alex smile with joy. The excitement in her eyes made him smile brightly beneath his mask. “You mean it? I mean, do you really mean that we’ll be a family again? I don’t think I could stand it if you were to go back on your word, Alex. I’ll be honest, I would give anything to be with you again. My body aches for your embrace, and my heart beats only for you. Even now it beats for you, Alex. Also, I want to be a mother. I want to see our child. I want to be able to hold my baby. So please, Alex. Please, don’t tell me something that you don’t mean. I would never forgive you if you raised my hopes like this, only to dash them against the rocks.”
Alex could tell by the serious look in Brittany’s eyes, ones that were filled with sorrow, longing, and something else that Alex couldn’t place, that he had better be one hundred percent sure of what he was going to do. Alex took a deep breath and closed his eyes. The image of the little girl named Cherish, flashed before his eyes. She stood smiling at him, but even though she was smiling, she was crying. Alex quickly shook the image of her out of his mind.
Razriel wanted to kill her. Hell, he would have...I would have, but even then there was something about her that I couldn’t shake. Now, however, I can’t think about that. Brittany is my life, and I have my own child. They both mean the world to me. For them, I would give the world. Maybe now, a little more literal that would have earlier believed. I can’t let some foolish feeling get in the way of bringing back those that are really important to me. I would do anything for them. I’ve fought and killed two of my friends, because they tried to stop me from coming here. They tried to stop me from doing what I knew had to be done, and I killed them. Now, I’m going to let one little girl shake my resolve. That is the most ludicrous thing I’ve ever heard.
Brittany seemed to know what Alex was thinking. For before he could say anything else, Brittany spoke what he was thinking. “That girl shook your resolve. The mighty Demon Lord himself, losing his resolve and his willpower, all at the sight of one child. Evidently, your resolve was not what it should’ve been. Otherwise, you would’ve been able to kill her then and there. That would’ve been one more soul. You would’ve been one soul closer to bringing us back. Alex, I need to know your answer. I need to know whether or not you will really go through with this. Please, Alex, don’t keep me in suspense any longer. It’s killing me, not knowing what to expect. I’m afraid to get my hopes up, for fear that I will only be let out. So please, please tell me what you are going to do.”
“Brittany, these hands are already stained with so much blood. Blood of far too many innocent lives. Lives, that should’ve never been lost. I could not consciously kill any more innocent people, just for my own sake. That would make me worse than Zanatos, maybe even worse than Scion himself.”
“Oh, of course. If, if that is what you really want, Alex. I understand. It’s okay. Like I said, I would stand by whatever decision you decided,” Brittany said. It was obvious to Alex, that his answer had shocked her. She had been so sure that Alex would do anything to bring her back, that she thought she knew the answer to her question, before she even asked it.
Alex smiled as her expression. “Your faith in me, is truly amazing. Too bad you are too hasty to jump to conclusions.”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean, you knew my answer before even I myself knew it. The only problem is, is that you interrupted me before I finished speaking. Remind me when I bring you back, that we’ll have to work on that.”
Brittany’s eyes lit up with excitement at Alex’s words. “You mean you’re going to go through with it? You’re really going to go through with it?”
Alex smiled and nodded slowly. “Yes. No matter what, I am going to bring you back; and once that is done, then I shall bring back our child. We will be a family again. I will make sure of that, or I will die trying.”
“Yay! Oh, Alex, soon we will be together. I’ll finally be able to touch you again.”
“Yes, soon, soon things will be back to how they were meant to be.”
“But, Alex, before you do this, you need to quit using your demonic power.”
“How...how did you know I was using it? I’m only using a scarce bit of my power. I really didn’t think it would be noticeable. I had used it when I fought...when I fought with Baou and Rire,” Alex said softly. He wasn’t sure how he should tell her that he killed both Baou and Rire.
“I know, Alex. I also know of their fate, so don’t worry about that. I know you did what you had to do. Just as now you are going to do what you have to,” Brittany said with a smile. “As for your energy, I can probably sense it better because I technically am a being of pure energy right now. So, I can sense everything’s energy. Still, even though it might seem like you’re only using a little of your energy, I can assure you that it is enough that if any demon were to cross your path, they would know who you are. You wouldn’t really want that to happen, would you?”
“No, but are you sure that a demon could tell who I am, just from this sparse amount of energy I am emanating. I mean, I highly doubt that they would be able to. That is, unless they were highly trained. Even then, I doubt that they’d be able to pick up that it was my demonic aura.”
“Rire was able to, and don’t forget about the forces from the Eastern Realm that are amassing against you. Within their group, they have two elves. Both of which are highly trained, and are sure to be able to sense that it is your aura.”
“They already know who I am. That is the reason why they are coming after me. Baou sold me out. So what’s the point of hiding my power if they already know who I am, and if they are coming for me? I think it would be better if I were to go ahead and draw upon my power, that way I could slaughter these humans more quickly and then take on the Eastern Realm army. That would be no problem.”
“Alex, you know that you don’t want to fight them. Besides, I know that there are two people in there who are especially dear to you. Two people, that you wouldn’t want to kill.”
“And who might that be?”
“Shadow and Aurora.”
“What! Shadow and Aurora are even marching against me. That can’t be. Please, tell me that you’re joking.”
“Alex, you know that I wouldn’t joke about anything like that.”
“I would’ve never thought that they would have betrayed me. Now it seems that the only people who remain loyal to me, are you and Kiba. Everyone else has forsaken me.”
“Alex, please, refrain from using your demonic power. They know you are coming here because you told Baou. If you kill these humans without using your power and escape into the mountains in the north, they won’t be able to find you. They can’t track your demonic aura, because you won’t have one. Please, if you fight, if you use your demonic power you’ll end up killing even more of your friends. So please consider this, Alex. Do this for me, do this for yourself. Do this, so that you won’t be haunted by the deaths of your friends.”
Alex sighed and nodded. In a matter of seconds any trace of his demonic aura was gone. He looked up at Brittany and slowly stood up. Brittany followed suite, and soon both of them were staring out at the village below them.
“This night will be filled with the screams of the innocent.”
“They are not innocent. They are what’s standing between us and our happiness. Kill them, kill them all, and soon we shall be together again.”
“Yes. I will kill them. They will pay for standing between me and my happiness. They will pay for trying to keep me from you. They will all pay,” Alex said in a hysterical tone. His demeanor was that of a madman, and all Brittany could do was smile.
“Go, kill them now,” she ordered.
“Yes. Tonight the blood of the condemned with flow through this village. Tonight, I will once again have my mate by my side.”
Alex slowly started to descend the hill and head toward the village. Brittany’s evil grin never left her face as she turned her head to the east and stared out at the sky.
They will be here within an hour. Everything is going perfectly. Everyone is nothing but pawns to me, but soon, I shall have the king. The pawns and knights are moving just as I command them. It won’t be much longer now. My plans are going better than I could’ve ever believed them to be. That damn Gate Keeper almost ruined my plans. Even now I am losing control over him. I wasn’t expecting Baou and Rire to purify my essence around him. Still, it matters little. It is strong enough to last until the army arrives. Once they do, they will see the slaughtered bodies of these poor, pathetic humans, and they will try and kill Alex. He will be so blind, believing he will be doing everything for the love of his life. He is such a fool. How poetic it is though, that he was first betrayed by the four generals he placed complete trust in. Now, he will be betrayed by the woman who he first gave his heart to. He won’t use his demonic aura because I told him not to. That means he won’t heal, and once the battle begins, I’ll quit letting him leech off of my power. He’ll be stronger than a human, but far weaker than a demon. Tonight, tonight will be filled with screams, but I guarantee you, my scream will be far louder than that of anyone else. I will be screaming for joy, for Razriel, the Demon Lord himself, will die at the hands of those he once considered friends. It almost seems to good to be true. Now, to make sure my little puppet does exactly as he’s told.
Brittany stared down at the village. She didn’t have to wait long before a woman’s shrill cry broke the silence of the night. Brittany smiled wickedly and closed her eyes. “Checkmate....”
