“What do you mean you took the door? I took the door to and have just been put through Hell and back to get here. You guys don’t even look tired!”
“I told you to wait for us to come. If you had you would’ve not only saved some time, but you wouldn’t have used up so much of your energy go through those meaningless traps,” Raza replied with a sigh.
“What do you mean?”
“There was an illusion covering the real door. Raza dispersed it and allowed us to come through here. There were no traps or anything,” Aurora said with a coy smile on her lips.
“Yeah, I was going to come and try and get you, but the moment I saw how much damage you had already inflicted to the first room, I figured I’d just let you find out yourself,” Shadow said with a smirk.
“Ah, you’ve got to be joking!” Alex said in disbelief. He then did a double take at Shadow and Aurora and then turned to Raza. Motioning toward the two wolf demons as he spoke. “Umm...were you able to, you know?”
Raza nodded, apparently understanding Alex’s question. “Yes, they both allowed me to purify the essence that controlled them. They are both free of its influences.”
Alex breathed a sigh of relief. “Well that’s good.”
Shadow ran his fingers through his fur as he looked sheepishly at Alex. “I’m sorry for my previous actions. They were uncalled for. I allowed my emotions to get the better of me, and due to this other demons influence, that was enough to allow him to control me and make me attack you. I never meant for that to happen, I just...I couldn’t bare the thought of any harm coming to Aurora that I....”
“Shadow, you’re talking to the guy who just slaughtered a whole village of innocent people, do you really think your actions have any comparison to mine? Don’t worry about it. At least your actions were justified somewhat. I would’ve done the exact same thing were I in your position, whether I was being controlled or not. You were simply doing anything you could to protect the love of your life, that I can understand. Where as I allowed myself to be a damn puppet, while some other demon pulled my strings. I now have the lives of hundreds of innocent people, demon and human alike to atone for. So don’t act as if your minor sins are anything to worry about. Don’t forget, I am the one who is claimed to be a Devil,” Alex said. The sadness and torment that filled his voice was nearly unbearable to all who heard it.
It took several seconds for Shadow to find his voice after hearing Alex’s words. “My Lord...you are no Devil. It was your love for Brittany that allowed you to be controlled by this demon, just as it was my love for Aurora that allowed me to be controlled. A monster that uses someone’s love as a tool to control them, that person should be branded as a Devil. Not someone who do everything that you have done, just for a chance to bring back the love of your life, and your child. These actions of yours, while they may be atrocious, they were also intended for something much purer than what they turned out to be. So don’t mark yourself as a Devil, when you are the very farthest thing from that. For even when you were consumed by that madness, you still spared the life of my mate, and the lives of my unborn children. For that, I am eternally grateful.”
“So am I. Alex, you may have done some bad things as of late, and while others may not be as forgiving as us, the fact remains that you’ve done a lot more good than you have bad for this realm. Besides, you were being controlled, you couldn’t help what you were doing,” Aurora added.
“They’re both right you know. Even after giving up your title, people still think of you as their Lord. I’m not sure what they’ll think after they hear the truth about all of this, and while I can’t say I don’t harbor any ill feelings toward you after you killed my men, I cannot with good conscious hold your actions against you,” Raion continued.
Raza nodded and looked at Alex. “They are all right you know. You have some very good friends, Alex. For your friends to still stand by you, even after everything you have done, that is a true show of what kind of person you really are. After all I have seen, I realize now why Brittany loves you as she does. You are truly a person worthy of being called the Lord of the Demon Realm. Now, go ahead and face the last challenge that stands before you. Go and claim the dagger of fate!”
Alex nodded and turned to face the two stone statues. He slowly walked toward them, ready for anything. Alex’s muscles were already tensed as he prepared to move at the slightest inclination of a trap. As he neared the door, he heard the sound of something grinding. He quickly looked up to see what it was, only to an enormous stone sword come crashing down upon him. Alex quickly jumped backwards just to avoid being squished by the sheer blunt force of the sword. Alex cursed as he transformed into his demonic form. He stared up at the two enormous statues, both of which were now moving menacingly toward him.
“Shit, hold on Alex. We’re coming!” Shadow yelled as he prepared to jump to where Alex was. The moment he tried, however, he was sent flying backwards by an invisible barrier that covered the balcony they now stood on.
Raza cursed as he felt for the barriers edges. “Scion must have created this barrier to activate the moment those stone statues came alive. If the path we took was indeed made for him, why would he need this barrier?”
“I don’t know, but is there anyway you can disperse it so that we can go help Alex?” Aurora asked. Watching as Alex tried his best to dodge the oversized demons.
“I can try, but I can’t make any promises. Scion’s magic was far greater than mine could ever hope to be. Just as the Archmage’s didn’t wain over time, I highly doubt Scion’s would either,” Raza answered gravely. Just the same, he closed his eyes and tried to cast a spell to disperse the barrier.
“Chirabaru mamoru!” Raza yelled, pointing his staff toward the main part of the barrier. There was a bright flash of light, and for a second everyone thought that Raza’s spell had worked. The instant the blinding light ended, they quickly realized that they had gotten their hope up for nothing, for the barrier still stood.
“Only a few words? What happened to all the long spells to disperse barriers?” Shadow asked.
“If I knew what kind of barrier this was, I would better be able to try and get rid of it. As it is, since I don’t know what kind of barrier it is, it is best that I only try using the basic spells to disperse it. For if I know Scion, using the wrong kind of dispersion spell could prove fatal for us,” Raza grimy stated. He then turned his attention back toward the barrier. He raised his staff once more and cast another spell. “Shogai yabure!”
Just like before there was another bright flash of light. Yet, just as before the moment the light faded it became painstakingly obvious that the barrier still stood strong. “This might take awhile,” Raza muttered beneath his breath.
“Shit, Alex hold on just a little longer!” Aurora called out.
Alex dodged another one of the gigantic stone demon’s attacks. Flipping onto the blade, and using that as a ramp to allow him access to the demon’s chest. “Don’t worry about me. I know how to deal with these guys!”
Even as he ran he took hold of his right arm and began casting a spell. “Kobushi no ano akuma!”
Once again Alex’s fists ignited in an blaze of fire. He quickly launched himself at the demon’s chest. Right as he closed in on the demon’s chest, he put all the force he could muster into a bone shattering blow that hit the stone demon straight in the center of the chest. The fire orb that Alex had held in his hand, erupted in a sea of flames. Alex quickly placed his feet on the demon’s chest, and launched himself away from the demon.
The moment that Alex landed, he looked up expectantly, waiting for the demon to turn to ash like his smaller counterparts. Much to Alex’s surprise and disappointment, the demon still stood. It wasn’t even scratched by Alex’s attack. It seemed that all Alex’s attack managed to do was anger the stone giant.
“Oh you’ve got to be fucking kidding me!” Alex roared as he was forced to dodge another attack made by the large stone demons. “Looks like it’ll take more than a little fire to stop them. Fine then, bigger enemies, bigger fire!”
Alex then activated his crystal of energy, causing the flames around his hands to suddenly tripled in size, and engulfed most of his forearm. He then grabbed hold of his right arm with his left, allowing the two flames to then merge into one. The flames wrapped around Alex’s right hand, forming an orb of fire far larger than any he had ever created before. He could feel the flames start to burn away the skin on his hand, something that it wasn’t originally supposed to do. The large fireball, was almost double the size of Alex’s torso, and even then he wondered if it would do anything. Still, despite his doubt, he waited until the first stone giant neared him before he released it.
Here goes nothing, Alex thought to himself. He then lowered the ball of fire to his side, making sure to still hold onto his right arm with his left as he ran toward the giant. Once he was close enough, he launched himself into the air, spinning and planting his foot on the giant’s sword, and launching himself off of that to allow him to reach the giant’s head. Alex quickly raised the enormous ball of fire to the stone giants head and quickly released the orb, letting it fly right into the giant’s face at point blank range.
The sheer force of the explosion’s shockwave sent Alex flying backwards. Alex easily managed to flip on his feet. He was still prepared for anything as he glared through the smoke from his attack to see if his attack had done anything. Smoke rose from his right hand, and his nose caught the distinct smell of burnt skin. Alex quickly checked his hand, glancing away for just a second only to find that the skin all around his hand had been burnt off. Luckily, due to the crystal of energy he had activated, his healing factor was being increased so it would heal in no time.
“Alex, keep your eyes on the task at hand!” Raza yelled.
“I am!” Alex replied glaring angrily at the others. “It’s not like you guys are helping!”
“What he means is watch out!” Shadow yelled.
