Fan Fiction ❯ Trancending Death ❯ Remember Me ( Chapter 70 )

“Seven days,” Alex said to Lucia the moment that he saw him. A smirk graced Alex’s usual dark features. A smirk that hadn’t left his face ever since he passed through the gates of the Celestial Realm.
Lucia could almost sense Alex’s bottled up excitement, and he could almost tell that any moment now that smirk would burst into a full blown smile. “Seven days. I didn’t honestly think it could be done, but you did it.”
“Yeah...I did do it,” Alex replied softly.
Lucia was instantly able to pick up the trace sounds of sadness that lingered in Alex’s voice. Showing signs of uncharacteristic sympathy, he grabbed onto Alex’s arm to halt him from going further. “Hey, are you sure you okay? I mean, we don’t have to go see Brittany right now. She probably wouldn’t want to see you so shaken up like you are anyways.”
Kai sighed as he slumped against one of the large stone pillars. Leaning against it for support he brought his hands to his face and tried to wipe away the weariness and the turmoil that haunted his appearance. “No, I’ve waited too long for this to have a little case of the shakes stop me. This is what I have to do. I have to see her. I need to see her.”
Lucia nodded. He understood completely Alex’s need to see and be with Brittany. It was the same need that she had been longing for ever since she had arrived in the Celestial Realm. Despite this, he still wasn’t sure if he should take Alex directly too Brittany. “Are you sure you wouldn’t rather rest? Facing your inner demons must have been extremely painful and tiring, especially considering you didn’t have your demonic powers to aid you. There’s no telling what all the souls of the dead managed to do to your soul before you were able to overcome them. Even though it was only seven days, that was seven days in a living Hell.”
“I’ll say this, all those ghosts, all those spirits, all those souls...they really struck a nerve. It’s hard to imagine that all of them died by my hands, but that is a fact I must come to live with. It’s just that to have everyone you killed standing before you. Even though I killed them, they wanted to help me. They weren’t mad at me. Sure they felt pain and sorrow, but they couldn’t hold their hatred. I was only suffering because I allowed myself to suffer. Now it is time to move on,” Alex said slowly. He then looked at Lucia with knowing eyes. “Now, tell me why you are trying to stall me from seeing Brittany.”
Lucia looked away from Alex and ran his fingers through his hair. When he looked back at Alex his eyes were full of concern and worry. “Is it that obvious?”
“Too obvious. What’s wrong, is she okay?”
“Well, physically...yes. Mentally...it’s hard to tell. You remember how I said that she couldn’t remember you?”
“Yes, I remember that well enough. But don’t worry about it, Lucia. I know Brittany. Even when I was near the brink of darkness, I could still hear her calling out to me, and I’m sure that a portion of her could hear me calling out to her. She will remember me, I just know it,” Alex said with a soft smile.
Lucia’s face lost some of its brightness at Alex’s words. At one time, he too had believed without a shadow of a doubt that Alex would instantly jog Brittany’s memories. He knew better than anyone, that Brittany could in fact hear Alex calling out to her, just as he could hear her calling out to him. Their love, was one that transcended even the laws of death. But he wasn’t sure if their love would be strong enough for the task at hand. Not considering what Zanatos had done to her. Lucia silently turned back toward the stairs and started leading Alex to where Brittany was. For your sake, Alex, and for hers I hope that you are right.
Alex followed Lucia to what appeared to be an enormous garden maze. Two large silver gates kept the place locked to intruders. Lucia stood before the gates, hesitating before opening them. Finally he told Alex what he had wanted to tell him all along. “You’ll only have fifteen minutes to try and recover her memory of you. If you can’t do that, then you will be sent back to the Demon Realm without ever being able to see her ever again.”
“What the Hell did you just say?” Alex exclaimed.
“I’m sorry, I tried, but I couldn’t do anything to change your fate. You must believe me, I never wanted any of this to happen. Brittany waits for you at the end of the maze. Your time starts once you pass through these gates. I will return to you once the fifteen minutes is up,” Lucia replied softly. Before Alex could say anything else, Lucia suddenly vanished from sight.
“Shit,” Alex cursed beneath his breath. He looked at the imposing steel gates and the maze that he assumed wouldn’t be easy. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath before slowly opening the gate. Ready or not, here I come.
“So, the test begins,” Zemnas said, his eyes fading back to their original color after using the ability of the all seeing eye. He then looked up at his two closest confidants, Tristan and Shimera. “Shimera, go and make sure that Lucia doesn’t do anything to intervene in Alex’s process of trying to recover her memories.”
“I don’t think, Lucia would do anything...,” Shimera began.
“Just like you didn’t think he would dare bring Alex to our very front steps?” Tristan challenged.
Shimera looked away at his words. “He only did it because he thought it was the right thing to do.”
“We shall see about that,” Tristan said angrily.
“Listen, both of you. The fact is, is that he’s here and we must deal with the problem at hand. So, just to be sure of everything, I want Shimera to go and ensure that Lucia does in fact stay away from Alex while he’s trying to return that girl’s lost memories. Do you understand, Shimera? No one interferes with those two, got it?”
“Yes, of course,” Shimera replied. She glanced at the stone cold face of Tristan before hurrying out of the council room.
“What now?” Tristan asked once she had left.
“Now we wait and watch what happens,” Zemnas replied. Folding his hands together and using his all seeing eyes to peer into the future. “This man, this Devil, this Lord...Alex is a wild card. For him the future is unclear. It branches off into several directions. So in essence, depending on his actions, depends on whether we fail or succeed.”
Alex raced through the maze at speeds he didn’t believe a human should even be capable of. The maze was long and unpredictable. With its winding turns and seemingly endless length, Alex would be lucky to reach Brittany before the time was up. Still, he knew in his heart that he could do it no matter what it took.
Alex ran past an opening in the maze, a side branch that he assumed went nowhere. Once he passed by it, it took him a second to realize that something was different about it. He quickly stopped in mid-dash and turned to go back to the place he had just left. Once he entered this branch of the maze, he felt his heart skip a beat. There, sitting on a stone bench wearing all white, was none other than the one he had been searching for all this time.
“Brittany...,” Alex whispered softly. He stood staring at her for a moment. He couldn’t honestly believe that it was her, yet he knew it was. He didn’t hesitate any longer to run toward her and wrap his arms around her. He didn’t even register the fact that since she was dead he probably wouldn’t be able to hug her, but much to his surprise and delight, he was able to feel her touch and pull her close to him.
“Brittany...my love...God how I’ve missed you,” Alex whispered in her ear. He sat their holding her, stroking her hair and crying for what seemed like an eternity. So great was his joy, that it took him a few minutes to realize that something was indeed very wrong with this situation. He held Brittany out at arm’s length from him and realized that her face hadn’t changed expressions at all since the moment he had first seen her.
“Brittany, don’t you remember me? Please...you’ve got to,” Alex said softly through quivering lips. He took her hands and looked her in the face. He immediately could tell that something besides memory loss was affecting her. Her eyes were dull and gray, not at all the lively brown eyes he had fallen in love with the first time he saw them. Something else was making her act this way, but that just made his need to snap her out of it even greater.
“Please Brittany, why don’t you remember me? Have I really changed that much, that you can’t even remember the face of the man that you once loved?”
Alex ran his fingers through his hair, tears pouring down his face as he slumped off of the bench and landed on his knees in front of Brittany. He laid his head in her lap and cried. His tears poured from eyes, even more so than the night that she had died. The person he had longed to be with was within his grasp, but she was nothing more than a shell of the person that he had loved.
Alex turned around and looked toward the sky. Anger and tears blurred his vision as he watched the clouds. His arm laid on Brittany’s lap, as did most of his left side as he glared up at the sky.
“Dammit, God, you can’t do this! You can’t bring me this close, only to take her away from me once more. No one, especially not you should be that cruel or have that sick of a sense of humor. I’ve come so far, done so much, you can’t do this! You can’t take her away from me again. I won’t let you! How can you have me come so close, only to throw everything back in my face?” Alex knew he wasn’t going to get an answer, but he had to vent his frustration out somehow.
