“I...I did what I had to....” Brittany replied softly. She looked down at the ground, unable to meet their gazes. “How can I go back to him, knowing what he did?”
“I think you’d better take this one child,” Rire whispered as he gently shoved the little girl toward Brittany.
The girl nodded and slowly started toward Brittany. She bent over and looked up at Brittany, who still wasn’t able to meet their gazes. “Don’t cry,” the little girl said softly.
Brittany managed to look up through tear stained eyes, and looked into the most innocent eyes she had ever seen. How can anyone as innocent as this still be here?
“That’s the same look that Alex had when he first saw me,” the girl said with a small smile. “I’m Cherish!”
Brittany couldn’t help but smile at the girl’s own innocence. Her smiled seemed to light up the darkness that had threatened her heart. “I’m Brittany,” she said quietly. It was obvious that she was trying her best not to cry, but failing miserably.
“Are you the person he was searching for?” Cherish asked suddenly.
“What do you mean?”
“The mister...I mean, Alex, he said that he was searching for someone. He said that there were two people who was searching for. He seemed so sad when he told me this. It was like he lost a part of himself when he lost those two people were important to him. He said that he was searching for them, and since he came here, I thought you might be the one he was searching for.”
Brittany tried to choke back the tears that threatened to overtake her, but she failed. “I...I am one of the people he was searching for.” Tears fell like torrents from Brittany’s eyes as she looked back down and away from Cherish. “Can you ever forgive him, can you ever forgive me for being the reason that you died?”
Brittany was prepared for many reactions from Cherish, but what Cherish did was the last thing Brittany had expected her to do. Cherish giggled. She giggled at what Brittany had said as if Brittany’s plea for forgiveness was the funniest thing she had ever heard. It wasn’t a laughter full of malice or anger. It was a laughter of one who had no heavy thoughts on their hearts.
“Why would you ask for forgiveness silly? I’m not mad. No one is. We’re sad, but that’s because some of us left loved ones behind, but we aren’t mad. We know what Alex did, and we know why he did it. We know, because in our hearts, we know that he is a good man. We know that he did it because he loved someone, and because he was willing to do whatever it took to bring those he loved. Besides, I can’t be mad at him. Now I’m back with my mommy and daddy! It’s so good to see them again. I wouldn’t have been able to see them if it wasn’t for the mister, err...Alex I mean.”
“That’s good, that you can see your parents again. But what about the fact that your life was taken away from you?”
“We were only alive because the Demon Lord made it illegal to hunt us. But, can I ask you something?”
Brittany could tell by Cherish’s soft voice that whatever was on her mind was not something that would be pleasant. Even though she knew she would probably regret it. Still, she couldn’t help but allow the child to ask her question anyway. “Yes, of course you can.”
“Alex, he looked sad when he couldn’t find you, but now that he’s found you he looked even sadder than before. I would’ve thought that when he found you he would be happier. So why does he seem worse now than ever before?”
Brittany nearly died again when she heard Cherish’s question. She knew the answer, but she didn’t know how to explain it to her. Brittany took a deep breath and prayed a silent prayer before beginning. “He did a lot of bad things, Cherish. He killed you. He killed a lot of people. He thought he was doing it for good things, but in the end he only ended up hurting people. Nothing is worth hurting people for.”
“So, you’re mad at him? But, we’re the ones who were killed. We’re the ones who suffered, and not even we can hate him. Alex is a good person. He cried when he killed me. He cried because of what he had done. So how can you be mad at him, when everything he’s done has tormented him? Why do you want to cause him so much more pain? Wasn’t he going through enough already?”
Brittany’s composure gave ay at Cherish’s words. Her hands trembled, as did her whole body. Am I really causing him so much pain? What am I saying? Of course I am. Alex.... Why can’t I just forgive you? If even those that were slain by you can still think of you and smile, then why can’t I? I gave my heart to you Alex. I love you with all my heart, there’s no denying it. I can’t stay mad at you forever, Alex. You fell into the darkness, and it has changed you. I should’ve known that you wouldn’t stay there. You did everything in your power to come back into the light. Heh, to them, I’m the bad guy for hurting you. They may not say it Alex, but they care about you. If they can still stand up for you, even after all this, then the least I can do is stay by your side as your love, and as your bridge to the light.
Cherish wiped Brittany’s tears from her eyes, even as more took their place. “I’m sorry lady, I didn’t mean to make you cry.”
Brittany reacted on impulse, pulling Cherish into her embrace. “No, you did nothing wrong. I’m the one who couldn’t see what was right in front of me. You shouldn’t have to apologize for anything. If anything, I should be apologizing to you. To all of you.”
“The only person you need to apologize to, is the person who’s heart you just ripped to shreds,” Baou said as he crossed his arms and stared at Brittany with a smirk. “He’s the one who needs to hear that. He’s the one who needs you to be hugging on him, not Cherish. She’s got her own family waiting to get a chance to hold her. So I suggest you let her go so she can get to her family and you can get to yours.”
Brittany nodded and slowly released her clutches on Cherish. “Thank you, Cherish,” Brittany whispered. When Cherish looked up at Brittany and smiled, Brittany realized why Alex had felt such torment after killing her. Brittany imagined how heavily it must have weighed on his heart, as well as how he must have felt when he first met her. Brittany vaguely recalled a small feeling of contentment and of hope before his sudden plunge into the darkness.
“I didn’t do anything,” Cherish quickly protested. “Alex helped me find my parents. The least I could do was help him find what he wanted most of all.”
Tears, when will the tears stop? She’s precious, just like a little angle. I wonder if our child will be anything like her. Oh, I hope it will. I know it will. Alex, I’ve got to trust him. I love him, and no matter how hard I try, I can’t hate him. If I could’ve hated him, I would’ve never given my heart to him.
Brittany tried to stand, but her legs gave out from under her as she did. Before she fell, hands gripped onto her arms and held her steady. She looked up to see Baou and Rire on either side of her keeping her from falling.
