“Go to him. He’s waiting,” Rire told her as they helped her up. Brittany couldn’t believe the warmth in Rire’s face as he looked at her. Even Baou seemed to smile a little as she started toward the maze. Se stopped at the entrance back into the maze. She knew she couldn’t look back, but at the same time she didn’t want to leave like this.
“Thank you,” Brittany said quickly before she raced out of the maze.
Baou smirked and shook his head. “As I said before, a spirit’s work Is never done.”
“Regardless, at least they’ll be back together soon. Our work is done for now,” Rire replied with a self satisfied smile.
“What are you looking so smug about? We didn’t do shit...err I mean anything,” Baou said. He mentally kicked himself for cursing in front of Cherish. He later wondered why he felt so close to the girl. “If it wasn’t for Cherish we’d still be arguing with her.”
Rire finally nodded after a moment of consideration. “I guess you are correct...for once.”
“Yes! I finally got you to admit that I’m smarter than you.”
“I wouldn’t go that far,” Rire said slowly. He then noticed Cherish was still looking toward the maze.
“Do you think they’ll be okay?” she asked softly.
“Yes,” Rire said with such confidence that even he wasn’t sure where it came from. Cherish took Rire’s outstretched hand and grabbed onto Baou’s hand. Baou widened his eyes in surprise, but said nothing about it.
“Let’s just hope they don’t have any alone time. Otherwise they’ll have this whole realm shaking,” Baou said suddenly. Laughing as he did so.
Cherish looked at him with big eyes full of curiosity. “What do you mean? Why would the whole realm be shaking?
Baou stopped dead in his tracks and stared at Cherish. Rire couldn’t contain the laughter that rose in his throat at Baou’s speechless expression. Baou looked at Rire for help, but Rire only shook his head. He instead looked at Cherish and smiled. “I’ve been trying forever to get that sort of reaction out of him. You did it with just a few simple words, I’m so proud!”
“What? But I...I mean, what does he mean?” Cherish asked. By now she was thoroughly confused with the situation at hand.
“You traitor!” Baou said venomously.
“Hey, you’re the one who started it. Besides, I thought you liked fighting your own battles,” Rire said innocently. “Or is it just that this is one battle you’re afraid you’re not going to win?”
“Shut up,” Baou replied in a defeated tone.
“Will someone tell me what he meant?” Cherish exclaimed.
Alex reached the golden gates that were both the entrance and exit to the Celestial Realm. He leaned his head against the cold metal of the golden bars. For all his power, he was completely powerless in this situation. He had messed up big time, and he feared that nothing he could do would ever be able to change what he did. The only at of repentance that he could hope to achieve would be to kill the monster that was truly responsible for this. He was looking forward to having Brittany by his side. That alone would’ve been more than enough encouragement to take on that monster. Yet now he had managed to push her farther away than ever before. I fucked up, and now I have to pay the price. Someone up there has one Hell of a sick sense of humor. God, what do I do now? Do I go and leave, losing any chance I had of bringing her and our child back? Or do I stay, even though in doing so will cause her to hat me more, but in the process give me answers to my questions?
Alex sighed and softly knocked his head against the golden gate. “What do I do?” Alex roared. “What the Hell do you expect of me? I fucked up, but it’s not like I’m not trying to do something to fix it. Give me another chance! Let me be able to give it another shot! Let me be able to have my love and my child back! Please...that’s all I ask.”
Alex fell to his knees. Tears threatened his eyes. Tears that had been forced bac for far too long were trying to escape their long imprisonment. Alex’s voice was barely above a whisper as h spoke. “I’ve lost them again. I lost them this time without ever being able to say goodbye, just like before.”
“You haven’t lost us, Alex,” Brittany’s voice called out from behind him.
Alex quickly turned around and stood to face Brittany. “B-Brittany...,” he said softly, unsure of what else to say. He quickly averted his eyes to the ground and looked away. “I’m sorry....”
“Shut up! Just shut up!” Brittany yelled, causing Alex to flinch at her words. The next thing she did too him completely off guard. He was expecting her to slap him, or at the very least continue yelling at him. Instead, she embraced him slowly. “Please, just...just hold me. Okay?”
Alex didn’t need to be asked twice before he gently wrapped his arms around her. “Are you sure
you want to be associated with a Devil?”
“You’re far from a Devil, Alex. If you don’t believe me, there’s a very charismatic little girl who can easily convince you otherwise,” Brittany replied with a soft laugh.
Alex’s heart swelled up in a mixture of pain and joy at her words. He new who the girl was, and he silently whispered his thanks to her. “I’ve found you. I’ve finally found you, and there’s no way I’m ever going to let you go.”
“Thank you,” she replied with a smile as she buried her head in his chest.
Two figures cloaked completely in white stood off in the distance surveying the scene before them. “I guess I was wrong,” Shimera said quietly. Even though she was admitting defeat, she couldn’t contain the smile that worked its way onto her lips. “Their love is far stronger than anything I have ever seen. Nothing can conquer it. Not sadness, not lost, not pain, not the darkness. All have tried to rip them away from each other. Each time, their love has proven stronger.”
Lucia smiled at her words. “Even though I would love to accept all the credit for this, in the end, we were both right. If I had allowed Alex to be consumed by the darkness, if Alex had allowed himself to be consumed by the darkness, then she too would have been consumed. If it hadn’t been for you, I don’t know what would have happened. So, thank you Shimera. You saw what I could not. Their love is both their greatest strength and their greatest weakness. For whatever fate holds true for one, it will also hold true for the other.”
“I guess we make a pretty good team, you and I,” Shimera declared with a thoughtful look on her face.
“I just hope we made a good enough team when we were pleading our case to Zemnas. I’m afraid what will happen if he refuses Alex’s request. I don’t even think that he would be able to stand up to the full extent of Alex’s wrath if he piss’s him off.”
“I’m afraid that it’s all up to Alex and Brittany to try and convince him. I doubt that Zemnas will make it easy on them though. Luckily I’ve got someone who actually will want to help Alex, and not try and please Zemnas.”
Lucia could tell by the playful look on Shimera’s face that she was up to something. He looked at her with curiosity and asked. “What are you talking about?”
“Simple. Zemnas is going to crucify Alex with questions. I think it’s only fair that Alex have someone who knows the right answers to those questions and that will be willing to help Alex no matter what.”
Lucia grinned as a thought danced across his brain. His eyes twinkled with mischief as he realized who she was talking about. “Yes, he will do it. He will be able to point Alex in the right direction better than any of us could.” He then turned and looked back at the loving couple. Neither one had dared to break their somewhat hypnotic grip on each other. Each one wanted nothing more than to stay like this forever, but they knew that they had other responsibilities that they must attend to. Just as they knew it would only be a matter of time before their responsibilities would catch up to them. Lucia sighed and looked at Shimera. “It’s time to go.”
Shimera nodded slowly. “I don’t know what I hate more. Knowing the fact that I’m about to break the apart after they’ve just now managed to find each other again, or the fact that I’ll be leading them to their executioner.”
Lucia mentally agreed with her, but made sure not to say anything as they disappeared.
“I love you, Alex,” Brittany whispered softly. Her wet tears had soaked Alex’s shirt, but he didn’t care. He had hear back in his arms. There was only one thing missing to make this perfect. He still needed his child back, but he knew that, that would come later.
“I love you too,” Alex whispered. He kissed Brittany on the top of her head and looked ahead of him.
Brittany felt Alex’s muscles tense suddenly. She looked up and saw that he was starring at something behind her. She quickly turned to look around, only to see Shimera and Lucia standing before them.
“It is time,” Lucia said in a low voice.
Alex nodded slowly, but still didn’t make an attempt to move. “If I go through this, if I do whatever the Hell it is that your leader wants of me, will he be able to bring Brittany and our child back to life?”
Lucia paused for just a second before replying. “You’ll have to ask Zemnas about that. In this game, he controls all the pieces.”
