The amount of self restraint Alex showed was truly admirable. He simply kissed Brittany on the lips and replied. “Later, I’m going to ravage you.”
“I’ll be waiting.”
“If you are quite through,” Zemnas’s voice cut through their conversation like a razor sharp blade. The edge of his voice instantly shook Alex out of his arousal and turned his eyes from ones filled with lust, to eyes that glimmered with promises of death.
“Just what is it that you want me to do exactly? You know the name of the demon who controlled me. So why can’t you just tell it to me so that I can be on my way?”
“I suggest you start attending to your job,” Zemnas said without paying Alex any heed. He turned to Alcadan as he spoke.
“Yes, of course,” Alcadan quickly replied. “Alex, they cannot tell you because they are forbidden from dealing in the matters with the other realms. Because of their eyes, they can change the future of the realms and thus they have long since chosen to stay out of the affairs of the other realms.”
“Their eyes?” Alex asked suddenly.
“Oh yes. I’m getting ahead of myself. Aren’t I? You see, all Celestial beings have an ability called the All Seeing eye. With it, they can see the past and future laid out before them. It is because they can see the future that they aren’t allowed to act directly to change it, because the events could be more disastrous than the original fate.”
After hearing those words Alex turned to face Lucia. “Wait, are you telling me that you knew that all of this was going to happen?”
Lucia shook his head slowly. “No and yes. Unfortunately, even though we can see into the future, the future we see is not always certain. Imagine the veins of a leaf. We can see the future, and we can see the possible outcomes of the future. We do not know which path the future will take due to the many different things that could happen. I know that if we allow this demon to continue its original plan that not only will the Demon Realm be destroyed, but ours will as well. I knew that if I set you down onto the path to try and bring Brittany back, that you would fall to darkness. But you must believe me, I never intended for this to happen. I tried everything I could to stop you from going as far as you did. I set you down a path that turned out to not even be necessary. For the power that you need to use to defeat the Devil, is still something that you fear. Until you’ve learned to use it to your advantage, you will have no hope of defeating him.”
“My power? I assume you are talking about my Devil Armor,” Alex said slowly.
Lucia looked up. The shocked look on his face told Alex that he had guessed correctly. Lucia quickly looked at Zemnas, who glared coldly at Lucia but said nothing against him. Finally Lucia nodded. “Yes. To defeat him, you must gain the power of your Devil Armor that is the only way. I had believed that to use it, you must not care about anyone or anything. The only way for that to happen would be for you to allow yourself to be consumed by the darkness. Now, however, I see that the only true way for you to obtain this power is through knowledge of its origin. For that, you must learn about it and about yourself from the man who helped to create you.”
“In other words, to know your enemy and to be able to defeat him, you must first know yourself,” Shimera added.
“Knowledge, is the only way you will be able to stand a chance against this demon. Your powers are great, but his is far greater. You must first learn about yourself and about your armor, that way you can obtain your true potential. Then, you must understand how this monster was created. When you know that, you might stand a chance against it,” Zemnas told him.
Alex stood still for a second. Brittany knew he was contemplating his options. His eyes were focused at his feet, and his jaw was set in determination. Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, Alex spoke. “If I kill this monster, if I kill this Devil, will you bring Brittany and my child back to life?”
Zemnas’s face was a mask of cold emotion and mild confusion. He looked at Lucia, who seemed to wilt beneath Zemnas’s gaze. “You didn’t tell him? I thought we had discussed this.”
“What does Lucia need to tell me? Aren’t you the one in charge of everyone? I was told that if I wanted to see my child, if I wanted to bring my love and my child back to life, I would first have to get your approval. Now, will you bring them back to life if I stop this Devil?”
“You ask for things that are impossible,” Zemnas stated with a wave of his hand.
“I have been through fucking Hell and back to get here! I have killed more men than I care to count. So don’t you dare fucking tel me that it’s impossible for me to bring them back. Lucia told me that I can bring them back if I speak to you. He said that you could do it. So I’m going to tell you right here and now, if you’re fucking lying to me, I won’t think twice about killing you.”
“So, you don’t know about your child?” Zemnas’s face made Alex’s stomach turn over. He could feel his heart stop, and his skin pale, as a feeling of dread crept over him.
“What do you mean?”
“You’ll never be able to see your child.”
“What the fuck do you mean?” Alex roared. He felt Brittany go limp in his arms, but the anger that burst forth from him overcrowded any other feeling. His roar made Zemnas lose his confidence. If but for a moment, Alex could see fear in Zemnas’s eyes.
“Just as I said. You will never be able to see your child and I will never be able to bring it back to life.”
Zemnas’s words fell on Alex like a stone gavel. The finality of his words could not have been more clear, but Alex’s anger and pride wouldn’t allow him to believe it. It was the hope that Zemnas was lying that kept him on his feet. Brittany, who was only moments ago on the verge of tears has managed to compose herself. Hate, it seemed, was what was keeping her on her feet as well. Both of them knew that they weren’t going to give up hope. As long as their was a chance, they were going to fight it.
“How can you look at us, and tell us that we can’t even see our own child? Why, why can’t I see my baby!” Brittany shouted in what seemed to be a mixture of anger, despair, and turmoil.
“If you want to know, it is simple. You cannot see your baby, because of him,” Zemnas said. He pointed his finger at Alex, like an executioner would right before he chopped the head off of his intended victim.
Alex was so shocked by this revelation that he couldn’t even speak. The anger inside of him drained out, replaced by a numbing fear.
“What do you mean? Alex is its father! Why can’t I see my child, just because its father is here? I want to see my baby!” Brittany’s voice was nearing a state of being hysterical, and even though Alex was still in shock, he managed to put a reassuring arm around Brittany’s shoulder.
“Brittany,” Alex whispered softly. He had paled considerably, and had Brittany looked back at him, she would have realized that something must be seriously wrong.
Brittany shrugged his arm off of her and didn’t even look at Alex. Her eyes were full of fire and the heat of her gaze was leveled at Zemnas. “No, I want to know! Why can’t I see my child?”
“For someone who has come so far, I’m surprised you know so little. Just look at your lover. You can see it on his face that he knows the answer. Just look at him. You can tell that in his heart, he knows the truth.”
Brittany stopped, her anger momentarily subsided due to confusion as she turned to face Alex. She gasped as her eyes took in Alex. He was pale as death, and his entire body was quivering slightly. He didn’t even look at Brittany, so she had no idea what was going on in his head. His eyes were focused on the ground, and his hair covered his face. Brittany started to reach out to him, but pulled her hand back as she realized that Alex might not want her right now. “Alex?”
“His soul,” Alex said in a voice that was barely above a whisper. “The only way we wouldn’t be able to see him is if our child wasn’t here. The only reason our child wouldn’t be here, would be if something were to be wrong with his soul and he never came here after he perished.”
“What are you saying? Are you telling me that our child was born with no soul?” Brittany yelled in tone of disbelief. Alex cringed lightly at her outburst, and she realized she had no right to direct her anger at him.
Alex looked up, and Brittany was able to see the pain in his face. She imagined the same pain marked her face, but his was different. Hers was at the prospect of losing her child, something that her heart wasn’t yet able to believe, that is why her fear and worry manifested itself in anger. Where as Alex’s pain, was due to the belief that it was somehow his fault that this had happened.
“Alex?” Brittany asked in a voice that riddled with hidden sadness.
“It’s because of me. It’s because I was the father of our child,” Alex whispered. “Our child was born with a defected soul, because its father was a soulless monster!”
