What do you want, Lucia?
You have to stop this, Alex.
Why? This bastard is all that stands between me and Brittany. She’s all I have left. I’m not leaving here without her.
You may have to. Your friends back in the Demon Realm might be in trouble unless we get you back there. The Devil is already on his way to get the dagger. So please, I know this will be difficult to ask of you, but please calm yourself. If you go along with what he says, then he’ll be more inclined to help you. While you’re gone, both myself and Shimera will try our best to convince him to help you.
Did you know?
Did I know about what?
Did you know about my child? Alex could tell by the look on Lucia’s face, that Lucia had no idea, but still Alex had to be sure.
Do you think I’m that heartless, to give you hope like that only to take it away? No, I didn’t know. If I had, I would’ve never given you false hope.
I know, but there’s no way I’m going to fight this monster until I know for a fact that Zemnas will bring Brittany back to life. It’s because of me that they died, and it will be because of me that I’ll get them back. I don’t care what he says. If that spell book is as powerful as he claims it to be, there has to be someway to get our child back.
Alex, there is something you need to know. Something, that both you and Brittany need to know.
What is it?
“Alex, it is not because of you that Brittany and your child passed away. It is not because of your blood that they died. They were not supposed to die when they did. They were both supposed to have survived the pregnancy and lived much longer lives than they did,” Lucia said aloud for all to hear.
“Lucia, shut up!” Zemnas ordered.
Alex felt Brittany grab onto his arm, and he released his grip on Zemnas to hold her. He judged by the look in her eyes, that either Lucia or Shimera had, had a similar talk with her as well. “What do you mean, Lucia?”
“I mean, they were not supposed to die. The monster that now plagues the Demon Realm. The monster that controlled you, and because of his control on you made you kill all those innocent people. The demon who now threatens those few friends who are still alive. He is the reason Brittany and your child died. It is because of him that they passed away, not you.”
Alex, if you do this, if you gain the knowledge needed to kill him and you do manage to defeat him, I will do everything in my power to bring both Brittany and your child back to life. You have my word.
Alex held Brittany tightly in his arms. Her tears fell onto his chest as he gripped her tightly. He too wanted to cry, but as of now he was too blinded with rage to do so. I have your word that you’ll do this. Know this, Lucia. Those that cross me die. Please, do everything you can do bring them back, and I will do whatever I can to defeat this demon.
You have my word. I will do it. Now please, calm down and quit pushing yourself to use your demonic energy here.
Alex closed his eyes, and in a matter of seconds returned to normal. Even while he was still holding Brittany, he spoke to Zemnas. “What do I have to do to be able to defeat this Devil?”
Zemnas rubbed his sore throat as he returned to his seat. Even though he glared daggers at Alex, he still knew that business came before personal vendettas. “First, you must learn about yourself. Only then will you be able to know your enemy. Alcadan, I believe it is time to tell him the truth about his origin. Tell him, how he came to be known as the Lord of all Demons.”
All eyes were now on Alcadan, who had remained quiet throughout everything that had happened. Even Brittany lifted her tear stained face to look at him. Alex knew that the only reason she wasn’t trying to kill anyone, and why she was seemingly so calm, was just because of Lucia’s promise to bring their child back to them. Even though it was a slim hope, it was still hope.
Alcadan sighed and looked at Alex. In his eyes, Alex could sense eons of suffering and pain. It was that pain that made Alcadan look so old. It was that eternal suffering that made him so withdrawn from everything. Alex wondered why it was only now that he was able to see this pain. The answer came to him in the small smile that Alcadan flashed before bowing his head.
I’m walking down the same path that he did, Alex thought. Alex didn’t know what Alcadan’s life was like, much less what his own life was like. Now, in just a few moments he would learn the truth of his origin. Alex gripped Brittany tightly to his chest. For once, he didn’t know what was going to happen and that scared the Hell out of him.
Brittany looked up at Alex, knowing too well what he must be thinking. This is hard for him. It’s hard for Alcadan as well, but it is something that they both must go through. Alex needs to know his past, and he needs to know his own father. If Alex can kill that Devil with the knowledge he gains from his past, then we’ll be able to be a family again. I know Alex will succeed. He just has to!
“I knew this day would come. The day that you learned about your past. I have both dreaded it and awaited it with eagerness. I am afraid that you might hate me once you know the truth,” Alcadan whispered.
“I doubt that I could hate you, Alcadan. But still, the choice is mine to do what I please with the knowledge that you are about to give me. I need it to help Brittany, and to help save my child. So please, tell me. I need to know about my past more than you could ever imagine,” Alex replied earnestly.
Alcadan sighed and nodded. “It began nearly a millennium ago. Long before the Romans, or any other civilization such as that existed. It was beck when Egypt was the most powerful empire in the world. I was one of the Pharaoh’s servants. Both me and my brother, Scion, were. One day, strange portals appeared in our land, and it was mine and my brother’s job to discover where they went. We took a group of soldiers with us, and entered the portal. That portal, transported us to the Demon Realm.”
So that is how humans first arrived here. Portals lead from the Human Realm to the Demon Realm. Hmm, I’ll have to ask Alcadan about those portals later, Alex thought as he made a mental note of it.
“Well, when we arrived in the Demon Realm the portal behind us closed and we were trapped there. We instantly became prey to the demons who used as nothing more than prey. As you well know, humans stand no chance against demons unless they use spells. We of course, knew no spells. All we had were our weapons, which shattered against the demon’s skin. We ran, that was all we could do. Eventually, we managed to befriend some demons and they offered us refuge. Over time, we realized that we were not the only humans there. Soon, more portals began to open up and more humans began to come to the Demon Realm. The humans were not like us at all though. We only met a few more Egyptians before other types of people began to come through. Most of which were slaughtered before they made it to our village. It was one day, when me and Scion were out together, we came across a man who was being attacked by demons. We watched in awe as he waved his hands and the demons simply vanished from sight in a bright flash of light. Of course both myself and Scion were awe struck by this display of power by a mere human. When we spoke to him, he simply gave us a book. He told us that if we desired power beyond our imagination to learn its secrets and grow stronger.”
Alcadan stopped and watched as dawning appeared on both Alex’s and Brittany’s faces. “Yes, that was the very first spell book. From that book stemmed every other spell in existence in the Demon Realm. After mastering the spells in the book, me and Scion became the guardians of the humans. We went out on daily search and rescue missions to help protect any of the humans who had passed through portals. It was on one of these trips, that I met your mother.”
Alcadan stopped and took a deep breath as memories flooded his mind. Alex tensed as Alcadan took his breath. When Brittany looked at him, she could see the tension cloud his gaze. She knew that learning his past brought him one step closer to bring back their child.
This is hard on both of them. Alcadan is being forced to relieve a happier time, one that was destroyed by Scion. Now Alex is learning about his past, something that was denied to him even when he was Razriel. Alex now has the chance to learn about his mother. Despite what he may say, I know that he has long since wondered about his existence ever since he learned that Alcadan was his father. Even in the Human Realm, Alex’s relationship with his parents was hardly considered good. His father and mother were divorced before he was even born, so he wasn’t close to his father. His mother...she died just four days before his birthday. She was buried the day of his birthday. It seems his mother was once again taken away before she should have been. Even though Alex didn’t know her, the news of her dying to keep him safe at the hands of demons hurt him.
“You’re mother was breathtaking,” Alcadan said with a small smile. “She had dark brown skin, black hair, and the most beautiful green eyes. I was mesmerized the first time I saw her. Both myself and Scion fell madly in love with her. We both spent a lot of time together, and soon the three of us were inseparable. We taught her all the ways of the arcane arts, and she soon grew to be as powerful as us. We both loved her, but in the end she chose me over my brother. Despite what you might think, there weren’t really any harsh feelings between me and Scion. Me and your mother lived happily for quite sometime. Me, Scion, and your mother were the guardians of our village. When she became pregnant with you, the whole village held a celebration. Once you were born, the village became one large family. I remember it like it was yesterday. Even Scion enjoyed playing with you. He used to spoil you to.”
Alex’s look of disbelief was evident as he stared at Alcadan. “Scion...are we talking about the same Scion here? The Scion who spent his entire life trying to kill me and make my life a living Hell. That Scion? I mean, how could he go from loving me to wanting to use my corpse as his throne?”
“That comes soon enough,” Alcadan replied. Something in Alcadan’s voice sent a shiver through Alex’s spine. “It was four years after you were born that everything went to pieces. By this time, the portals between the Human Realm and the Demon Realm were all but non existent. Still, on this particular day reports of another portal appearing caused me and Scion to go and check on the rumor. Thus leaving you and your mother behind to guard our village. As fate would have it, it was that day that demons went to try and lay waste to our village. By the time we had returned to our village, it was nothing but a smoldering ruin. Everyone was dead. There were burning corpses everywhere, both human and demon alike. The only survivor of that horrendous act was your mother. We found her clutching your dead body and crying.”
You have to stop this, Alex.
Why? This bastard is all that stands between me and Brittany. She’s all I have left. I’m not leaving here without her.
