“What! But I thought you said she was killed by the demons!” Alex yelled in surprise.
“In essence, she was. Before either myself or Alcadan could fully understand what was happening, your mother told us where the remainder of the demons had fled. She told us to kill them, and bring their souls to her. She told us the spell to use to capture their souls, but that was all she said. We couldn’t get anything out of her. She was too hysterical, but that mattered little to us. Like men possessed we searched out the demons and vented our wrath upon them. When we returned, we brought her the souls just as she had asked.”
Alex had a feeling of dread that was already threatening to consume him. He clung tightly to Brittany, as if she was his last life line. Even Brittany paled, and she feared that Alex was about to receive even more grave news. Please, let my guess be wrong! If I’m right...I’m not sure what Ale will do. He lost his original mother...or rather the mother who gave birth to him in the Demon Realm, long before she was supposed to die. He once told me that he felt it was because of the fact that she gave birth to a child with demonic powers. Because of that, her heart was severely weakened and she died from it. If his true mother died.... Please, just let me be wrong.
“My mother died bringing me back to life. Didn’t she?” Alex asked. Alex rested his head so that the top of his forehead rested against Brittany’s forehead. She tried to look up to see his face, but his hair covered his entire face.
“She died doing what she wanted to do,” Alcadan replied softly.
“What happened?”
“When we brought the souls to her, she arranged them and prepared them for a ritual. Neither myself or Scion had any idea what she was doing. Even as she preparing for this ritual, she never once let go of your body. When she was finished, she laid you down and opened the portal which contained the souls of the demons. It was then that she said something that we wouldn’t understand until much later. Her words..., they still send a chill through my spine when I recall them. Her words proved to be more prophetic than any others. She then cast the spell. There was a bright flash of light, and when it ended. She was gone, and you were alive. I don’t know where she learned that spell, but after I realized what had happened I tried my best to erase it from my memory. Scion, however, imbedded that spell into his memory for all eternity. It was this event that led to his ascension into darkness.”
Alcadan took a breath and looked over at Alex who was still unable to meet Alcadan’s gaze. “This, is why I was afraid you would hate me. After your mother’s sacrifice, Scion took to staying by himself. I didn’t know it at the time, but he was trying to bring your mother back. He used the spell she had to bring you back, and continued to create all sorts of atrocities all while trying to bring her back. He was creating wraiths, instead of bringing back the woman he loved. I was too busy taking care of you to realize the madness that had possessed my brother.”
“Before I continue further, let me state this. I loved your mother with every fiber of my being. A day didn’t pass that I didn’t think of her, but I knew that I could never bring. Unlike Scion, who resented you for taking away my wife, I loved you with all my heart because that’s what she would’ve wanted. She would’ve wanted you to be happy and you were. That was all that mattered. Taking care of you preoccupied my mind and thus I didn’t take much notice to Scion or his growing madness. When I finally realized what had happened I went to confront my brother. I discovered him looming over several corpses, experimenting on them. I asked him what he was doing, and he told me he was trying to bring her back. He was calm, too calm for comfort as he casually talked about death and resurrection. He told me that he had finally figured it out. That he realized why he couldn’t bring her back. The final key. The final part of the puzzle. To bring someone back to life, the soul of a loved one must be sacrificed.”
Brittany gasped, causing Alex to move slightly. In that brief second Alex’s hair moved from his face and Brittany was able to see his face clearly. Even though his eyes were shut, a few stray tears rolled down his cheek. She wasn’t sure why, but she could see how pained he was. Because of that, and because she didn’t know what else she could do, she wrapped her arms around him and laid her head on his chest. “It’s okay,” she whispered.
“That is the truth about bringing someone back from the dead,” Alcadan said after a moment of silence. “If you had tried to bring Brittany or your child back to life, you would’ve had to give up your own soul in order to do so.”
“What did she say,” Alex asked in a whisper. When Alcadan didn’t answer he asked again. “What did my mother say before she brought me back to life?”
“When I confronted Scion, he told me about a loved one’s soul being needed. Even in his madness he could not take the life of his own brother, but as fate would have it you had followed me there. Up until this time you were a regular ten year old boy. Rambunctious, playful, and mischievous. The only thing that was different about you when your mother brought you back, was that your hair turned solid white. That, and your eyes turned a pale blue. So pale, that they seemed to glow. When Scion saw you, he laughed. He said that it was perfect. The one who had stolen my wife’s soul would be the one to give it back. Before I realized what had happened Scion launched a fire ball at you. It exploded, surrounding you in flames and smoke. I was in shock at what happened. I stood starring at the smoke that had completely covered where you once were. Scion’s laughter broke me out of my daze and caused me to realize what had happened. I was so furious that I lashed out against Scion, attacking him with every spell that I could think of. The only thing that I could think of at that point, was that he had just taken away my only reason for living. You were my everything, without you I had nothing and now my brother...my own brother had just killed you! In the midst of our battle, a voice broke out and called to us,” Alcadan paused and looked at Alex. “Do you know what you said?”
Alex wasn’t quite in the mood for this. He wanted to hear something, he needed to confirm something, but still he realized that Alcadan had been keeping this in for a long time and Alex did need to hear this as well. He felt his heart tighten as Alcadan described the moment when he had lost Alex. I know that pain all too well. Our child...my child...I will see my child again. No matter what, Lucia promised that we could see our child again so all I can do is put my faith in him.
When Alex didn’t answer Alcadan continued. “You said, ‘Don’t father! Uncle Scion didn’t meant it!’. Both of us stopped in the middle of our fight and turned to look at you. The smoke was just beginning to disappear and we were finally able to see you. The entire right side of your body was covered in red tentacles. What you consider to be blood red, I saw as rose colored. The entire right side of your face was consumed by the armor, that armor had saved your life. It was Scion who remembered your mother’s words first, and the moment he said them I knew his words were true. Before she cast the spell to bring you back, your mother said this. ‘Even though I will be gone, I will continue to look over him. I will continue to be with him. I will continue to look after him. I will become his armor. I will protect my child no matter what. That is what any mother would do, protect their child to the end. As long as I am with him, he will always have an armor to protect him.’”
It was then that Brittany realized why Alex was acting like he was. His mother! She’s his armor!
“After that, Scion left. I never heard from him again until many years later. As your powers began to manifest themselves, I realized that you would never be able to lead a normal life. With that thought, I realized that maybe you weren’t supposed to lead a normal life. Nothing about you was normal anymore, and I figured fate must have something in store for you. It was for that reason that I wiped away your memory. I set you out on your own. Without a name, without a family, without anything. It was the hardest thing I have ever had to do. Even as you wandered, I was watching over you. It was by pure chance that you discovered the demon blade Razriel, but once you did it was as if your destiny began to take shape. I watched you from the sidelines, and eventually became your advisor. I knew that your mother was with you as well. She was still your armor protecting you from all harms. She gave your life so that you might live yours,” Alcadan stopped and looked at Alex. He tried to smile weakly, but the fear in his eyes gave it away that everything he did was just for show. Inside he was terrified. “Do you hate me?”
Alex raised his head and looked at Alcadan. Brittany could tell that Alex’s eyes burned with tears, just as hers did. He wanted to cry for so many things. Both of her and him did, but they knew that they had to be strong for each other. They wanted to cry for the love that they had lost when fate stole them away from each other. They wanted to cry for the fact that now that they were together they couldn’t stay together. They wanted to cry for the loss of their child. They wanted to cry for Alex’s mother’s sacrifice. They wanted to cry for the hardships that Alcadan went through. Alex, however, had one more thing that he wanted to cry for.
“How can I hate you? You’re my father. You watched over me...you saw everything. How could I hate you, when you should hate me? My mother gave her life for me. She gave her life...human...she was a human and she gave her life to create a Devil! I can’t imagine what it must’ve been like for you to standby and watch as I turned into a monster,” Alex whispered softly.
Alcadan slowly walked toward Alex. Once he neared him Brittany moved to the side so that Alcadan could face him. He placed his hand on Alex’s shoulder and looked him in the eye. “You were a monster, but I never saw you as a one. I saw someone who was confused and didn’t have anyone he could trust. Someone who was alone and surrounded by enemies. Lashing out at everyone he could. You were a monster, but not a Devil,” Alcadan then looked over at Brittany and managed a smile. “I’m just glad that I was able to see the man you’ve become. You’re not a Devil, and no longer a monster. You’re a man. You’re a Lord. You’re a husband. And despite what they say, you’re a father.”
“In essence, she was. Before either myself or Alcadan could fully understand what was happening, your mother told us where the remainder of the demons had fled. She told us to kill them, and bring their souls to her. She told us the spell to use to capture their souls, but that was all she said. We couldn’t get anything out of her.
