Alex smiled and for the first time in his life, hugged his father. “Thank you.”
Alcadan was shocked at Alex’s sudden action, as was everyone else in the room. Brittany was the only one who was smiling. It took only a second for Alcadan to register what had happened before he broke down and hugged Alex as well. “We’ll get your child back for you somehow. I promise,” he whispered.
“As touching as this is, I suggest you hurry. That Devil is heading for your friends even as we speak, and we still have to cover your blood filled past,” Zemnas said suddenly. “And correct me if I’m wrong, but you’ve met your mother before. Haven’t you?”
The father and son broke their hug and turned to face Zemnas. Brittany grabbed hold of Alex’s hand as he stared down Zemnas. She didn’t know what was going on or what Zemnas was talking about, but she wasn’t about to let Alex face this alone.
“You’re right. I have met her,” Alex said softly. “But before I begin that tale, there’s one last thing I want to ask Alcadan. There’s one last thing I want to ask my father.”
The look Alex gave Zemnas was one of challenging. He dared Zemnas to say anything or to try and stop him. Just as Alex had predicted Zemnas backed down. Alex didn’t look at Alcadan as he asked this, instead he looked at the ground.
“What was her name? What was my mother’s name?”
Alcadan smiled as more memories came to him. “Her name was Rosemarie. And your’s was Alistair.”
Alex nodded and smiled. “Thank you. Now I can finally give a name to the woman who saved my life.”
Brittany looked at Alex in question, but he had already guessed what she was going to ask. “I didn’t tell you, because I couldn’t be sure what happened was real. Learning what I have now, it was no mere chance that Scion didn’t finish me when he had the chance. This is my story. The story that I never even told you. The tale of mine and Scion’s final battle.”
