Shadow pulled Aurora into his chest and rested his head on top of hers. “It’s his decision, Aurora. We’ll all miss him, but we can’t exactly stop him from doing this either. Alex has walked down his own path for quite sometime now. He’s been walking it alone for most of his life. He’s lost the one thing that’s most precious to him in this world, and even though we’ll miss him, we have to let him do this. Because if we don’t, we’ll be condemning him to a fate worse than death.”
“You’ll make a great leader, Shadow,” Alex said with deep sincerity. “I will return after this battle, that is, if I am able to. For now, let’s just leave that up to fate.”
“I hope I’m not interrupting anything,” a voice called out from behind everyone.
Everyone quickly turned to see Raza standing before them. Alex noticed the expression on Raza’s face as one of someone who carrying for a death sentence. Alex quickly turned to the others.
“If you guys will give us just one second. I believe we have something very important to discuss,” Alex told them. Glancing back at Raza to ensure that he was still there.
“Yes, of course,” Raion replied. He quickly grabbed hold of Shadow and Aurora and pulled them with him before they could protest.
Once the others were out of earshot Alex turned to face Raza. “I take it you aren’t here to bring me good news.”
Raza sighed and shook his head. “Is it that obvious?”
“You look like a man who is facing his executioner. Trust me, I know that look. It has been imbedded in my memory,” Alex said. He looked away as he spoke. His heart felt like someone had just wrapped it in chains and poured cement over it. He didn’t want to know, but he knew he had to. “So for what reason is it, that you’ve come?”
“The Devil’s power is even stronger than we had imagined. How, I don’t know, but it is,” Raza told him.
“How do you know?” Alex asked. He turned to look at him. He was relieved to hear that the news was about the Devil and not about Brittany or his child.
“Just a few minutes ago he decimated the remaining part of the Eastern Realm army. Scriar and Yaza are still alive, but their men were not so lucky. When the Devil unleashed its power...lets just say that I’ve never experienced a power of that magnitude. The Devil has such control over his demonic powers that he was able to contain how far his aura outreached so that you would be unable to feel it. But trust me, if you had, even you would’ve trembled.”
“I figured as much.”
“I’m afraid that by fighting this Devil, you will probably be committing suicide.”
“Don’t worry, I know.”
Raza looked at Alex in shock. “What do you mean? How can you be so calm about it?”
“Zemnas isn’t going to bring Brittany back or even attempt to bring my child back. Is he? Isn’t that what you were you were originally going to tell me?”
It was Raza’s turn to look away from Alex as he spoke. “I’m sorry. The moment I tried to speak with him...let’s just say he didn’t take to kindly to us second guessing his judgement.” Raza stopped and looked back up at Alex. “I truly am sorry.”
“It’s okay. I know. A part of me knew the moment I left that this would happen. I didn’t tell the others, but mine and Brittany’s thoughts have been connected ever since I placed the necklace on her. I’ve been blocking my thoughts from her, so she doesn’t know of our connection. I knew what Zemnas had declared, that is why I have no worries about dying when I fight this Devil. As I told the others, I am not long for this world.”
“You mean, you would fight this Devil and give your life up, just so that you might be with Brittany sooner?”
“No. I mean I will fight this Devil and kill this Devil, then end my own life. That way I can be with Brittany, and use the Forbidden Tome to bring my child back to life.”
Raza thought for a moment before speaking. “Have you figured out the identity of the Devil yet?”
“I believe I have a pretty good idea. Despite the fact that I don’t want to believe that it is true, I know in my heart that it must be them,” Alex admitted.
“And you still think that you will be able to kill him? Knowing who he is.”
“Knowing he was and knowing what he has become, yes. I believe that he would want me to. Because somewhere in there, his soul is still there. If I a correct about who it is, then I have no choice but to end this with my own hands.”
Raza nodded slowly. “You would kill him for this realm. You would end your life for your family. The least I can do is offer my help to one who desperately needs it.”
“What do you mean?”
Raza looked up at Alex and gave Alex an all too familiar smirk. “I mean, I’m probably going to be punished for even suggesting this, but it’s worth a shot. I mean, I think there’s another way.”
Shadow had been listening intently to their conversation, even though they could not sense his presence. Yet even with his keen hearing he wasn’t able to make out what Raza was telling Alex.
I was hoping that Raza would speak some sense into Alex. It seems that instead he is only encouraging him. I wish I could be as cheerful about Alex throwing his life away, but I feel just as strongly as Aurora about this. I don’t want him to go.
Shadow closed his eyes and was about to return to Aurora when a strong demonic energy over came him. Shadow was frozen to the spot, unable to move by the strong sense of bloodlust that literally brought him to his knees. Shadow’s last coherent thought before he was overcome by the demonic energy was one of complete shock.
It can’t be! No...not...you....
Alex nodded after Raza had told him his plan. “As I told the others. Lets just late fate decide what shall happen.” Alex froze and listened intently to the forest around him. “The birds have stopped singing.”
“The entire forest is dead,” Raza told him. He closed his eyes and remained silent for a few seconds. He suddenly opened his eyes in shock.
“Leave, I already know. He’s here,” Alex told him. Behind them stood a figure clouded in the darkness. It made no move to attack, not yet. Raza hesitated for only a second before nodding. I’ll be seeing you soon Brittany. Regardless of what happens. We’ll be together soon.
Even though Alex had been mentally blocking his thoughts from Brittany, he knew that she knew of their reformed connection with one another. He also knew that with the upcoming battle he wouldn’t be able to keep blocking his thoughts from her. With that, Alex cast a spell to block his thoughts from Brittany and Brittany’s from his. She’ll kill me for this, but I don’t want her to know what’s about to happen.
Raza disappeared in a flash of light. His presence was replaced by one of sheer darkness and bloodlust. Alex didn’t even have to turn around to know that all this monster’s rage was directed toward him.
“So, you’ve finally come,” Alex said as he readied himself for the battle of a lifetime.
