Alex opened his eyes right as Zanatos charged at him. Every muscle in his body was tense at the sense of the unknown that surrounded what he was about to do. Here goes nothing.
“Vis nova flatus!” Alex yelled. The first thing he noticed after he cast the spell, was the mind numbing pain that swept through his right arm. He could feel blood dripping off of wounds on his arm, which was caused by the spell. Blood dripped from his lips and he felt like his insides were on fire. For the most part, the spell kept the main part of the damage centered around the area from which the spell was originally manifested in. Thus, Alex’s right arm was nothing more than burnt flesh after casting the spell once.
The second thing Alex noticed, was an enormous crater that was positioned in the exact place that Alex had pointed at. The crater itself was almost half the size of Alex’s castle. Energy still crackled amongst the debris of the attack. The sheer magnitude of the spell, which Alex realized wasn’t an elemental spell at all, was truly impressive. What it was, was more or less sheer energy devoid of any such element.
The third thing Alex noticed, was Zanatos, standing at the edge of the crater peering into its dark depths. He looked up at Alex, shock crossing his face for only a second before he regained his lost composure.
“It seems you’ve learned a new trick. Let’s see if you can keep up with me then,” Zanatos replied calmly as he disappeared.
Alex’s eyes were barely able to track Zanatos’s movements, but the moment he managed to lock on to where Zanatos was running, he launched another attack. “Vis nova flatus!”
Once again there was another wave of pain, this time more intense than the previous one that consumed Alex’s entire body. Once again there was another enormous crater. Formed by a blast that would have surely destroyed anything in its wake. Once again Zanatos managed to dodge it. As Zanatos neared Alex, Alex became more frantic in trying to end this.
“Vis nova flatus! Vis nova flatus! Vis nova flatus! Vis nova flatus!” Alex called out in quick succession, hoping that by doing them rapidly Zanatos would be unable to dodge them. By the time he had cast the fourth one, his right arm was nearly useless. Most of his forearm was nothing more than bone. When he moved his left hand from holding his right wrist, the skin on his wrist came off. Alex winced in pain as he let his right arm dangle uselessly to his side.
When he looked up, the smoke from his mad assault was beginning to clear. A figure could be seen slowly making its way through the smoke, and Alex knew that he was done for. In an instant the figure disappeared from the smoke.
Without waiting to find out where the figure went to, Alex slammed his left hand into the ground and cast another spell.
“Tengoku-teki bakuhatsu!” The ground around Alex exploded right as Zanatos came crashing down toward Alex.
Zanatos didn’t even bother dodging the explosion as Alex hoped he would. Instead he used his claws to literally slice through the explosion itself. Zanatos landed next to Alex. He quickly stabbed his claws into Alex’s left shoulder, and lifted him into the air.
“Killing you as you are now would hardly be worth my time. I’m going to torture you for a little bit. Starting with returning a favor that I owe you. Twice you have ripped off my right arm. Now I believe it is time that I return this favor,” Zanatos stated with an evil gleam in his eyes.
Alex’s eyes widened as Zanatos grabbed hold of his burnt and mutilated right arm. Zanatos squeezed hard on Alex’s biceps, crushing the muscle itself and shattering the bones in Alex’s arm. Alex didn’t have time to scream in pain at that action, before Zanatos ripped his right arm off at the shoulder.
The pain was unbearable. It was literally so awful that Alex couldn’t even scream. Zanatos dropped Alex to the ground, along with his missing limb. All Alex could do was cradle his nub of an arm and bite back the pain that threatened to knock him unconscious.
“Heh, you’re pathetic,” Zanatos said as he stared down at Alex. “You’ve always been too trusting, and now your trust has finally cost you. It cost you only once before. For when we killed you the first time, that was nothing compared to what I have done. Your trusting nature, especially around Kiba, is what was your downfall this time.”
Zanatos’s voice changed to one of perfect mimicry of Alex’s own voice. “Kiba, would you watch over Brittany. Aurora wants to speak with me.”
His voice then changed to Simera’s. “Kiba, could you please get her some water.”
His voice then turned into Kiba’s. While he said this, an evil grin appeared on his lips. “Of course. Here you go lass. Drink it all up. That’s a good girl.”
Alex looked up at Zanatos with dazed eyes. At first he wasn’t able to understand what Zanatos was trying to do by telling him this. It wasn’t until Alex really paid attention to what Zanatos had just said that he realized the truth. Even though he knew that the Devil he was to face was the cause of Brittany and his child’s death. When he found out that Kiba was the Devil, that thought had vanished from his mind. His only priority was trying to stop this fiend. Now that Zanatos had just said what he had, the reality of everything came crashing down on his once more.
“You poisoned her you bastard! You poisoned my wife!” Alex roared.
Zanatos backhanded Alex, silencing him once more and sending Alex crashing face first into the dirt. “Wife is she now? Humans have wives. Demons have mates. Get it right. Oh, and yes, I did poison her. It was so simple to. No one ever suspected that anything unnatural had caused her death. Everyone just thought that she had died because of your tainted blood.”
Alex’s eyes were full of nothing but the purest hate as he struggled to get to his knees. “All this time I have been blaming myself. Even after I knew that Brittany and my child were killed because of you coming back to life, I still somehow managed to find a way to blame myself for this! I have been through Hell thinking that it was my fault that she died!”
Zanatos smiled at Alex’s words. “Yes, I know. But do you want to know what the real shocker is?” Zanatos paused for a second before leaning in close to Alex. “Do ye remember lad, just who it was that you put in charge of watching over Brittany body?”
Alex’s heart stopped at those words. The awful truth of what he had done made his body go completely numb to everything.
I left him there. I left him there to guard Brittany. I left this Devil there to guard her! I went off to bring her back to life, while leaving this monster with her body! No, if I left her with him...no...please no!
Zanatos could see the pain of the truth etched on Alex’s face. Zanatos laughed even harder as he spoke. Confirming Alex’s unasked fears. Zanatos licked his lips as he spoke. “Even for being dead, she still tasted pretty good. After that heartbreaking goodbye, I ensured that you wouldn’t have anything left to come back to!”
Alex’s eyes glazed over at Zanatos’s word. He couldn’t feel anything at that point. Not pain, not anger, not sorrow. He was completely numb to everything.
I’ve failed. I’m going to die. Lucia’s plan won’t work unless Brittany’s body was still in tact. I sentenced her to her fate the moment I let him watch over her.
Zanatos smiled wickedly at the crestfallen, broken, and emotionally dead form of Alex. He raised his clawed hand up to Alex’s throat, sliding his fingers along it to where tiny cuts appeared on his throat. Alex didn’t even flinch as Zanatos did this.
“Now, I will send you to the Celestial Realm with the thought that you entrusted your mate’s safety into the hands of your worst enemy. She died not because of my actions, but because of your trusting nature. That is the truth of all this. Now die!”
Zanatos raised his hand to strike Alex down, but the moment he did so tears began to fall from his eyes.
The tears pelted Alex on the face, and something about them made Alex look up at Zanatos. Only a few stray tears fell from Zanatos’s face, and Alex had no idea why they even fell in the first place.
It was Zanatos who realized what was happening. His evil laugh echoed through Alex’s ear. Alex closed his eyes, realizing that the last sound he would probably hear before he died was the sound of his enemies laughter. Instead, Zanatos spoke.
“How heartwarming. It seems what’s left of Kiba’s soul is crying at what he’s about to do.”
Alex’s eyes shot open at this. Kiba’s soul is still inside of that monster. So is Celeste’s. If I die now, then they will be forever cursed to be silent observers to this Devil’s actions. Actions that they know were enabled because of them. If I give up now, I will not only be going back on my promise to those whom I killed, I will also be betraying my best friend.
“Goodbye my Lord,” Zanatos said coldly as his hand came crashing down upon Alex.
Right as Zanatos’s arm was about to slam into Alex’s skull, a dark red arm halted his attack. Zanatos’s eyes widened in shock as Alex held Zanatos’s right arm firmly in his own right arm. Their fingers were interlocked as Alex glared at him. Alex’s arm was possessed by the Devil Armor, but unlike before, it was now infused inside of his arm. His skin was a dark scarlet color. His nails had turned solid black as had his tattoos. His tattoos changed shape. The symbols on them transforming into different ones. Spikes jutted out from the back of his hand, elbow, and shoulder. At first, it was just his right arm that was this color, but slowly, his entire body began to change into this color.
By the time Zanatos was able to recover from his shock, most of the right side of Alex’s body was a dark scarlet, and in a matter of seconds all of Alex’s body would be. The tattoos on his body were all turning solid black and changing shape with it as well. Alex’s eyes turned solid black, as did his hair, and his horns. His newly reformed right arm still held firm to Zanatos’s hand, unwilling to let go.
“If you can hear me, Kiba, thank you. Your tears mean a lot to me. The least I can do is free you from this monster’s hold on you. Wait just a little bit longer and I promise you,” Alex stood up as he said this. He tightened his grip on Zanatos’s hand causing Zanatos to actually wince. The crystals around his hand shattered under Alex’s grip. “I will set your soul free.”
