Chapter 1

Link woke early the next morning. He had decided that he wanted to wander the paths that had led him to so many places.

Zoras River, Death Mountain, Gerudo Valley. He wanted to see them all again. He had packed his bag before going to bed.

His Kokiri cloak was hung on the door, and his lucky Deku stick was by it. He put the cloak and bag on. He took his sword off its display and slung it over his shoulder, he stood there for a moment, feeling it's familiar weight.

It had been forged by Darunia himself on one of his frequent trips back to this plane of reality. He picked up his shield and placed it on his back over his sword. Link walked around the room picking up the things he was taking with him.

Bomb bag, Bow, Longshot. He checked his quiver for arrows. There were about thirty. More than enough, and he could always stop off in the Kakariko shop for more. He walked to the door and opened it. He looked around his room, checking again for things he may have forgotten.

Link closed the door quietly and walked down the stairs to the main doors. He considered going to Zelda's room to give her his present for her birthday, but decided against it. She would wake soon, and he wanted to be far away by then.

Zelda woke at dawn. She knew Link would be up. It was her birthday today and he was always up before her. She waited for ten minutes, sitting on her bed reading the book he had gotten her last year She walked through the empty corridors to Links room. When she got there she got a strange feeling. She ignored it and opened the door.

The first thing she saw was that Links Sword was missing from its display. As she looked around, Zelda noticed that a lot of Links possessions were not there. She ran to the window and looked out. There, heading towards Death Mountain, was a figure moving quickly.

"LINK!" Yelled Zelda. The figure paused for a moment, then continued onwards.

"Please find him." whispered Zelda.

"We won't fail your highness." Said Captain Serangai. The Royal Guard rode out of the courtyard, but Zelda knew already that Link would not be found. He hadn't spent those years as a hunted man being found all the time.

Link walked towards Kakariko village. It was strange seeing it after all these years. Link was sharply brought out of his daze by galloping hooves.

He looked around and saw a figure riding a pure white horse. Link dove into the bushes by the rode and waited for the rider to pass. His cloak was made by the forest people, the Kokiri.

It was invisible to the un-trained eye. The rider stopped in front of the bushes and dismounted. The rider pulled off the hood of their cloak and Link was shocked to see that it was a young woman.

She was around the same age as Link, twenty summers or so. Link was about to step out and say hello when the woman kneeled down and touched her hand to the ground. Link's mind clicked. She was a Ranger. Link had only met one of these strange people on his journeys.

They where scattered after the fall of Ganon, as most of them were in his service. The Ranger drew her sword and said

"Link! I know you're here!" Link stood slowly and drew his sword, then stepped out of the bush and removed his cloak.

"Ah, the infamous criminal, Link." Said the Ranger, with scorn in her voice.

"I am known as the White Rose. As you have already worked out, I am a Ranger." She threw her cloak over horse and brushed back her long, black hair. Link drew his sword and placed himself in the accepted combat position. She struck at once, moving with the speed that Link had expected.

He blocked her blows, which, he noticed, were all aimed to wound, not to kill. Rangers always respect their enemies, giving them quick, painless death. Link back-flipped out of the way of another blow and brought his sword up to bloke another blow. She was gone. So was her horse. Link looked up and down the road, searching for some sign of her, but there was none. Link decided that it would be best if he stayed off the road for the rest of his trip.

For the next few days, Link had little to worry about.

He avoided the occasional patrol, and kept moving towards Death Mountain. By his reckoning, he be in Goron city by nightfall. Link stopped and drew his sword.

There was lots of noise coming from the bush in front of him. Link drew his sword and prepared for a fight. A pure white horse ambled out.

Link lowered his sword before realising who it belonged to. He turned around and got a full power kick to the chest. Link fell backwards and rolled to the side as an Zoran blade came down. The sword missed Link by a hair, and sunk deep into the ground, right up to the hilt. Link jumped up, drew his sword from its sheath, and saw who his attacker was. It was the Ranger again, White Rose.

She gave up on trying to pull the sword from the ground and drew two shorter blades.

"There will be enough time to free Elbereth once I have delivered your head to Ganondorf!" she said, with rage and hatred in her voice. She leaped at him, slashing and stabbing,

"Ganondorf is trapped in the sacred realm!" said Link, blocking her blows with his sword and gauntlets. White Rose stopped.

"No." she said, with disbelief in her voice. She fell to her knees. This gave Link the chance to use the evil purging magick that Zelda had taught him.

White Rose screamed with pain and anger as Link removed whatever spell held her. He had sensed it from the rage in her voice. No ranger lost control like that.. If this hasn't worked I'm Dodongo food thought Link as he collapsed on the floor near White Rose, and slowly moved his head to look at her. She got up, dropped her swords to the floor and simply said

"Thank you" before collapsing again.
