The next morning, Kay awoke with a yawn, sat up, and shut off her alarm clock. It was Saturday, and Kay was absolutely content. The air was heavy and warm as she slipped into her peach colored tank top, blue jean capris and Teva sandals. She tiptoed downstairs, and was passing the living room to go into the kitchen, when she had to stifle a giggle at Kenny. He lay sprawled out on the couch with no shirt, barefeet, and only blue jeans. He was positioned in such an awkward position that Kay was sure that he'd be hurting later. His hair was tussled and messy, with half of his body on the couch, half hanging off. Kay slid into the kitchen, still laughing, and poured herself a cup of coffee to wake herself up. She looked up from her coffee while sitting at the kitchen table as Kenny came stumbling in, rubbing his eyes groggily. He had pulled on a wrinkled shirt, and hadn't bothered to brush his hair or put on shoes.

"Do you hurt?" Kay questioned. Kenny nodded slowly, as he fumbled to pour himself a cup of coffee. He sat down with a grunt next to Kay, and cupped his chin in one hand, drinking with the other. He turned to Kay after he had had a couple sips of coffee.

"I have a fall practice Baseball game today at 1:00pm. I was wondering if maybe you'd like to come see it?" Kenny asked.

"Sure! I have a Field Hockey game at 10:00. I think we'll be done by then. Where will you be?" Kay asked.

"The North field at the High School." Kenny said. They smiled at each other.

"Ok." Kay said. She flicked her gaze to the clock, seeing that it was almost 9:30. She bolted up. "Omigosh! I have to get going! I'll see you at your game, ok?" Kay said, dumping her coffee cup into the sink.

"Ok. Good luck!" Kenny called as she ran upstairs to get her uniform on. Kay waved in thanks, and Kenny slipped his cup into the sink. He gathered up his things from the living room, and walked out the door, having left a note on a paper napkin to the family in thanks.

At about 1:15, Kay came rushing to the North field at the high school, brandishing her sports bag, and Cranbarry Field Hockey stick. Her uniform, made up of a red jersey, a short blue, green, and red plaid skirt, shin gaurds, and long socks was flashy enough to catch most of the baseball team's attention as she arrived, including the opposing team. Kay waved cheerily to Kenny, who was pitching, and he smiled at her, dipping his head down to hide his blush.

"Pretty girl, Kenny. She yer girlfriend?" the third baseman, named Ben teased. The team chuckled with mirth and Kenny blushed brighter, hissing warningly at Ben. Ben chuckled, and bent down in the ready position as the batter stepped up.

The game turned out pretty well after all. Kenny's team won for the first time in two weeks, and Kenny struck out nine batters. It was Kenny's turn this week to bring back the equippment to the shed, so Kay waited for him dutifully. She trotted up to him as soon as everyone had left, grabbing the bases from the field to help.

"Thanks. You're our good luck charm, you know. We haven't won in weeks." Kenny said, smiling at her. Kay chuckled.

"I'm sure." Kay said, shaking her head. She got to the shed first, and deposited her burdens. But, as she came out, she stopped Kenny before he could go in. "This has been bugging me the whole time. Stand still." Kay said, unbuttoning the buttons on Kenny's shirt that were buttoned cockeyed and rebuttoning them the right way. Her hands paused gradually as they reached the top button, and she slowly looked up at him. His sapphire blue eyes met hers, sparkling slightly. Kay looked him over slowly, seeing the perspiration and dust that coated his tanned skin, smelling the sweat and slight scent of shampoo, and feeling her heart skip a few beats. He slowly lowered his mouth to hers, meeting her perfect lips with his. Fireworks like she could have never imagined shot into the air in front of her as he slipped his hand around to cup the back of her neck and deepened the kiss in the process. She hooked her fingers in the chain around his neck, and drew him closer. They finally broke apart slowly, her breathing lightly, him trying to keep himself from falling over. She ran her finger from the top of his cheek all the way down his neck, getting the satisfaction of seeing him shiver in delight. When she lifted her finger, it was coated with dust and renewed perspiration caused by her. She smiled as he tried to come back to reality.

"That was...nice. We should do it again sometime." Kay said, smiling deviously and gathering up her things. She walked off, waving to him with a crook of her fingers and a half grin. Kenny tried to smile back but he was afraid he would melt under the heat that was burning up his insides. When she disappeared, he had to lay down on the cool grass to keep himself from overheating. He closed his eyes then, and grinned like he had just become ruler of the world. This is what he wanted, and he was coming closer and closer to becoming completely head over heels.

When Kenny arrived home, he cricked open the door, peering in, and then pushing it open all the way. He stepped in, taking off his baseball cap and cleats, and dumping his sports bag by the door.

"Kenny!!! Don't leave your bag there!" came his mother's sharp voice. Kenny grumbled, and hooked it in the crook of his elbow, walking into the living room. When he entered the living room, he almost dropped his bag in surprise. Kay sat on the couch with Treena, looking over a magazine filled with spring dresses. They both looked up as he came in, and smiled.

"Treena is helping me pick out my homecoming dance dress." Kay explained. Treena smiled secretly at her son, but Kenny gave her a quick, sharp glare.

"Has anyone asked you yet?" Kenny asked, feeling a slight pang of jealousy.

"Nah. I'll probably just go with my friend Brownie." Kay said, oblivious to his noticable show of relief as she gazed back over the magazine.

"Well...I'm going to go shower. I'll be down in a few." Kenny said, trailing upstairs. Treena and Kay each acknowledged him with an "Mmmmhmmm..." and he smiled, shaking his head.

When he arrived upstairs, he trundled into the bathroom, and closed the door, locking it. He discarded his uniform by the door, turned on the water, and stepped into the pleasantly hot beat of water on his back. He washed his body free of sweat and grime, and washed his hair carefully, sifting his fingers through his liquid silk hair. Kenny was very proud of his hair, and liked keeping it well cared for.

After he was done, dried off, and with a fragrance of strawberry shampoo about him, he dressed in blue jean carpenter pants, sandals, and a plain yellow t-shirt. He slowly made his way downstairs, and found the living room empty. There was a slight clatter coming from the kitchen, and the radio playing softly. When Kenny entered the kitchen, he expected to see his mother standing at the kitchen sink. But instead, there stood Kay, humming softly and chopping up carrots obviously for a salad. Kenny blinked in surprise, so silent that Kay didn't even notice he was there. Hoku sang out in a melodious croon from the speakers softly, and Kay's voice hummed in tune. As Kenny stood staring curiously, water from his hair dripped down, tickling his nose. Kenny's nose scrunched up, and he let out a half cough, half sneeze, trying to cover it up. Kay jumped and whirled around, brandishing a frying pan protectively. Kenny raised an eyebrow dubiously, and raised his hands in a sign of surrender, grinning at her. Kay scowled at him, and set the pan down on the counter, turning around to resume her carrot-chopping.

"Kay, where's my mom?" Kenny asked cautiously, sitting down at the kitchen table. Kay glanced up slightly.

"She went to the store to get some milk and strawberries. She wanted to make strawberry cheesecake for our picnic tonight." Kay explained.

"Picnic?" Kenny asked, confused.

"Your mom and I set up a little get together for my family and yours. Treena said your cousin is coming down to visit this week. What's his name?" Kay asked, changing the subject.

"Trevor." Kenny spat, unable to control the distaste in his voice. Kay turned to him, surprised.

"My, Kenny. I take it that you don't like him very well. For personal reasons, perhaps." Kay said, smiling slightly.

"No. I don't just not like him. I despise him. He's a spoiled brat, and has to take the time to rub it whenever my mom isn't looking." Kenny sneered. Kay raised an eyebrow and lightly patted Kenny on the shoulder, resuming her carrot chopping. "I have to go pick him up from the airport tomorrow." Kenny said, scowling. Kay set down her knife, walked behind Kenny, and placed her hands on his shoulders, massaging them slowly. Kenny leaned into her hands uncontrollably, and rotated his neck slowly, purring with pleasure.

"I'll go with you to the airport, ok? Just let it slide, Kenny. If you let yourself get all worked up, you'll get all sweaty again. Speaking of strawberry cheesecake...is that you that smells like strawberries?" Kay said.

"Mmhmm...It's my mom's shampoo. Mine ran out." Kenny explained, becoming more and more relaxed. Suddenly, Kay's face appeared in front of his as she stood over him, her nose almost touching his. He tipped his head up a bit to look at her better, and blushed lightly.

"It smells good." she said, smiling. She pulled back, stepping back to the sink and now chopping up a few strawberries that were leftover to add a little sweetness to the salad. She paused, looking at him. "Kenny?" she said, looking thoughtful. Kenny swallowed, trying to keep the swimming in his head at bay.

"Yeah?" he said, looking at her. She was silent for a moment, as if thinking about something crucial. Kenny wondered what she was thinking. Well, he got his answer.

"What do think should be in the salad, cucumbers or peppers?" she asked. Kenny raised an eyebrow.

"Well...cucumbers definately." Kenny decided.

"Yeah, that's what I thought." Kay agreed, pulling the cucumber from the strainer in the sink, and begining to peel it. Kenny suddenly couldn't stand the heat in the room anymore, and stood up from his chair, walking to the window. He flicked a quick glance over to Kay, but didn't say anything. His insides ached for something...he wasn't sure what it was, since he had never felt it before. He pushed it back down forcefully, and brushed his hair out of his eyes with a shake of his head. Kay finished up the salad, and set it to the side, slipping her cutting board and knife into the sink. She wiped her hands off on a towel, and smiled at him. He smiled back. Kay spun the chair that Kenny had been sitting in towards her and sat in it calmly.

"Kenny...is there something bothering you?" Kay asked lightly, filing her nails with a nail file from the kitchen counter. Kenny took deep, quiet breaths, and turned to look at her.

"Did you mean it?" Kenny asked, unable to ask what he was feeling any other way. Kay seemed lightly confused for a moment.

"Did I mean...what?" Kay asked, looking at him in puzzlement. Kenny fidgeted, blowing his hair out of his eyes, playing with the corner of his shirt, and so on. He didn't reply, and just stood there helplessly. Then, it clicked with Kay and she giggled. She looked straight at him, and he was unable to resist her gaze. "Kenny...when I do something like that, I mean it. I'm a fickle girl." Kay said, staring at her pretty nails in admiration. Kenny blinked, as if surprised that she actually had meant to kiss him.

"Are we...going to take this anywhere...?" Kenny asked uneasily.

"That depends. As I told you, I'm a fickle girl. I like to select my partners in crime carefully. Michael was one of my mess-ups." Kay said seriously. Then she smiled. "It also depends on whether a certain person asks me to the Homecoming Dance." Kay said, holding out her hand to gaze perspectively at her nails. Kenny found himself relaxing as he smiled.

"I was just gonna ask you that, you know." Kenny insisted. Kay rolled her eyes.

"Well? Are you just gonna stand there?" Kay demanded. Kenny sighed.

"Alright, alright. Kay, will you go to the Homecoming Dance with me?" Kenny asked, smiling at her pleadingly.

"Hmmm...well...it depends." Kay said thoughtfully. Kenny buried his face in his hands, laughing.

"Aghh!! You are so..." Kenny began, and trailed off when Kay stood, walked to him, and stood on tiptoes so that she was eye level with him.

"I'm so what?" Kay asked, her face less than two inches away from his. Kenny swallowed, becoming a rosy red. "Amazing?" Kay suggested. Kenny nodded. Kay smiled. "Good response." she said, bringing her lips so close to his they almost touched, but not quite enough. Kenny's breathing hitched as he realized how close she was. What had happened to all the courage he had had that day at the baseball game?? Kenny dismissed it as just a little fault, and tried to breathe normal again when she drew away and sauntered into the living room. Kenny knew that she knew that she had such an atomic affect on him. She was just playing with him. And he was pretty sure he liked it.
