Kay wandered through the high school halls towards the courtyard to eat her lunch, while peering over her math homework confusedly. She didn't notice Kenny standing in front of her with his back to her, holding out his baseball glove for his friend Ben to throw him the ball. Ben noticed Kay walking forward, and started to warn her.
"Hey, watch-" he began, but he was too late. Kay walked WHAM! right into Kenny's back, sending her stumbling back and falling onto her butt, and Kenny thrown forward onto his stomach. Kenny stood up and turned around to berate his assailiant, but softened immediately when he saw that it was Kay. Kay stood also, looked up at him and scowled, her ripped math paper dangling from her left hand, and Kenny's glove hanging from her right.
"Kenny!!!! You ripped my paper!" Kay howled, punching him repeatedly in the chest. Though he didn't really mind the blows, he held up his hands as if to block them. He caught both her wrists and held them tight, frowning at her. Kay growled softly, relaxing. "I hate you." she pouted. Kenny chuckled.
"No ya don't. I'll tape your paper for you. Don't worry." Kenny said, grinning. Kay swung his glove as if to smack him in the head with it, and he cringed. She satisfied herself by hitting him upside the head lightly with her hand. Kenny rubbed the spot with his fingers, frowning.
"Hey Kenny, you comin' or what?" Ben yelled, tossing the baseball into the air boredly.
"Yeah, yeah. Hang on, I'm coming." Kenny called back, looking back to Kay. "Can I have my glove?" Kenny asked. Kay pursed her lips firmly, and Kenny raised an eyebrow. "Do I have to beg?" Kenny asked, grimacing. Kay chuckled at the very thought.
"No, I suppose not. But, if that ball comes anywhere near me, I will have both your heads." Kay replied, raising her voice at the end so Ben could here. Ben chuckled nervously, and raised his hand in a sign of acceptance. Kenny smiled, and graciously took his glove when she offered it.
Later, after the school bell rang, Kay sauntered out of her last class, tipping her sunglasses above her forehead to see better. She gazed around, looking for Kenny, but found no one. Suddenly, there was a light tap on her shoulder. Kay slowly turned around, and found herself face to face with one of the most handsome boys in the school, named Matt. He had a shock of blonde hair, and pretty boy blue eyes. He smiled at her winningly, and Kay smiled back.
"Hi, Kay. How's it going?" Matt asked, leaning against the tree that stood behind them. Kay cooly flicked her gaze over his face.
"Hello, Matthew. It's going pretty well for me, actually. You?" she questioned, resisting the urge to raise an eyebrow. Matt grinned at her.
"Good, good. Hey, I was wondering if you had a date for the Homecoming Dance tomorrow night." Matt asked, giving her a charming smile. Kay was stunned for a moment, and couldn't speak. She blinked a few times, until she felt someone come up behind her. She instantly knew it was Kenny, from the way he stood over her.
"Actually, I do." Kay said, reaching back without looking, and hooking Kenny's necklace in her fingers, drawing him a bit closer to her possesively. Kenny had to bite his tongue to keep from grinning triumphantly at Matt, and had to work even harder to keep his face from getting too bright. He couldn't help but be pleased that she could recognize him without even looking at him. Matt couldn't keep his jaw from dropping even for a split second, but recovered quickly. He glared at Kenny.
"Oh. Well...that's...ok. There will always be another dance," Matt said through his teeth, to keep from snapping at Kenny. Kenny's lip curled up in a snarl, and Matt gave a "Hmph!" and strode off. Kay giggled, and turned, burying her face in his shirt and laughing. Kenny gave a hoot of laughter, crushing her in a hug.
"Ahhh...you're awesome!" Kenny said, biting back a hitch in his breath at her closeness. Kay tickled his stomach, obviously noticing how uncomfortable he was, and backed away slightly.
"Is it time to go pick up your cousin yet?" Kay asked. Kenny frowned.
"I'm not too pleased at the fact that you actually are looking forward to going to pick him up." Kenny said, sounding a little bit hurt. Kay punched him none-too-gently on the shoulder, and he rubbed his shoulder with a scowl.
"I enjoy seeing you tick. Now, let's go," Kay instructed, steering him towards his car. He had brought her to school this morning, so she had no need to worry about her car.
"Ok, ok." Kenny said huffily, and got in, starting the car. They drove to the airport, and waited patiently for half an hour, playing Rummy. Kenny slapped his cards down, grinning at her.
"I win again." Kenny announced. Kay sighed.
"I suck." Kay said, frowning. Kenny patted her shoulder.
"It's ok. I suck at Poker." Kenny reassured her.
"Ooo...I rule at Poker. C'mon, let's play so I can at least kick your butt once." Kay insisted.
"Oh, alright." Kenny agreed. They played six rounds of Poker before Trevor finally came strolling up, his bags rolling on a cart behind him. He smiled at them winningly, and even Kay had to say that he looked pretty stunning. He had nicely tanned skin, like Kenny, black hair that had been dyed a reddish brown, and inquisitive chocolate brown eyes. With his eyebrows black, you could tell that he had had jet black hair in the past. Freckles were lightly splashed across his nose, barely noticable. The resemblance of the two cousins was uncanny. Trevor instantly attatched himself to Kay, much to Kenny's dislike.
"Kenny, who is this lovely lady?" Trevor asked, smiling at Kay.
"My friend Kay." Kenny grumbled.
"That's a lovely name," Trevor said, flicking his gaze to Kenny for a split second before sliding it back to Kay. He lavished his gaze up from her petite feet, up her perfect legs, and all the way up to her eyes, his gaze lingering at her lips. Kenny found this very disturbing, and felt a bubble of jealousy slowly coming to the surface. He strategically placed himself in front of Kay, motioning for her to pick up their cards. For once, to Kenny's utmost relief, Kay oblidged without so much as a whimper of argument. Trevor frowned and tugged his cart along as they walked back to Kenny's car.
On the way home, Kenny drove, Kay in the passenger seat beside him, and Trevor in the back. Kenny seemed slightly satisfied with this setup, and the whole ride home was silent. When they arrived at Kenny's house, Kay stepped out of the car, trailing to the trunk to get Trevor's bags. She lifted them up, leaving not a one, and took them into the house. Kenny trailed after her, Trevor walking behind.
"Kenny, where do you want these?" Kay asked as Kenny and Trevor entered. Kenny gestured to the door on the left, next to the kitchen entry way.
"Right there'll be fine, Kay." Kenny said. She nodded, opened the door, and placed the bags into the room, shutting the door when she was done.
"Well..." Kay said, breaking the silence. Kenny and Trevor looked at each other, and then looked at her.
"I'm going down to the baseball field to practice with my team. Want to come, Kay?" Kenny asked, ignoring Trevor.
"Well I...sure." Kay agreed, looking at Trevor sypathetically. "Let me go grab my glove from my house, and I'll drive down." Kay said, trotting out the door quickly to escape the tension. After Kay shut the door, there was a strained silence that filled the room. Kenny finally grabbed his keys from the rack by the door, and walked to the door, pausing in the doorway.
"There's food in the fridge, if you're hungry." Kenny said, turning to look at his cousin. Trevor nodded awkwardly, sitting down on the couch. Kenny hurriedly shut the door behind him, and got into his car, making sure he had his baseball stuff. He started his car, and drove down to the school, getting out just as Kay arrived in her blue Saturn. She shut the door and ran to catch up with him, wielding her softball glove.
"That wasn't very nice." Kay commented, snatching the baseball from Kenny's glove, and tossing it back and forth between her glove and her hand. Kenny grunted.
"He will be perfectly fine at home alone." Kenny said tightly. Kay shrugged.
"Whatever." was all Kay replied with. Then she grinned. "I'll bet I can kick your butt in baseball." Kay challenged idly. Kenny grinned back.
"Oh really? Well, let's go!" Kenny shot back playfully. They raced out to the field just as the team was getting warmed up. Kenny spotted his coach easily, and called him over.
"Coach, can my friend Kay practice with us?" Kenny asked. Coach Logan looked over Kay skeptically.
"Why ever would she want to practice with us?" Logan asked. Kay smiled at him.
"I love Baseball! I played it when I was little. I tried Softball, but Baseball definately suited me better." Kay explained. Logan chuckled.
"What position did you play?" he asked.
"Catcher." Kay replied simply. Logan looked surprised.
"Really? Well...we are in desperate need of a good catcher...Well, I guess I don't see why not! Kenny, you're going to pitch. Miss Kay, I'll help you fit the gear." Logan said, leading her into the dugout. As soon as they entered the dugout, everyone looked up.
"Who's that, Coach?" one of the players, named Ryan asked.
"Our on-trial catcher." Logan replied. The team went silent, and Kay raised an eyebrow, just waiting for someone to protest. No one did. They knew better than to tick off Kenny, who had just walked up behind Kay, towering over her. Another of the players, named Brandon, handed the gear to Kay. Kay smiled at him in thanks, and he blushed slightly, nodding in acceptance. Logan shooed everyone out onto the the field, and helped Kay fit the catcher's gear to her form and size. She selected a helmet from the rack, and it fitted perfectly. Logan smiled.
"Perfect." Logan said, patting her on the shoulder. Kay smiled back, and trotted out to the plate. On the mound, there stood Kenny, smiling at her.
"You ready?" Kenny asked. Kay nodded. Kenny then stood in the position, waiting for her sign. She put her hand down, and showed him a two. Kenny shook his head in refusal. She then showed him a three, the classic sign for a fastball, and he nodded in acceptance. For practice, Logan put Ryan up first to bat. Kenny wound up, and fired the ball in, landing with a satisfying smack in the pocket of Kay's glove. She threw it back smoothly, and went back down.
"Ball, low." Logan called from behind the plate. Ryan gritted his teeth, and wound his hands around the bat.
"Choke up a bit." Kay suggested. Ryan looked down at her, and she shrugged. Ryan shrugged also, and decided to listen for once. He choked up a inch, and stood ready again. This time, Kay gave Kenny the sign for regular, and he nodded. He fired the ball in, but it flew high. Kay frowned, and stood up, reaching high for the ball, jumping at the last second. To the amazement of every player on the field, she caught it!
"Kenny! What was that!?" Kay yelled, shaking her fist at him. Kenny bit his lip.
"Sorry!" he called back. This time, he slicked it in perfectly, and Ryan swung, cracking it out to center field, where it soared over the center fieldman's head, who was named Jonny. Ryan whooped, and pulled Kay to her feet, crushing her in a hug.
"Thankyouthankyouthankyou!!!" Ryan cheered. Kay looked astonished.
"Um...you're...welcome, I guess." Kay said, obviously confused. Kenny chuckled.
"Ryan hasn't hit a ball like that since...well...ever!" Kenny explained.
"Ahh...I see." Kay said, patting Ryan on the back with a confused smile on her face. Kenny detatched Ryan from Kay and smiled.
"Ok. Well, I think that's enough for today. Kay, would you like to be our new catcher for in the spring?" Logan asked. Kay nodded furiously.
"Yes! Yes! Thankyou so much!!!" Kay said, clapping her hands happily. Kenny smiled.
"Ok, Miz catcher. I'll walk you home." Kenny said, smiling at her.
"Ok." she agreed, following him without so much as a peep of protest. The entire team stared after them as they walked away, looking like they were together.
"Has Kenny been holding out on us, or something?" Ryan asked. The team shrugged, and they went back to their practice.
As they walked, Kay contentedly sucked her root beer up through her straw, Kenny walking calmly beside her.
"Do you have your dress ready for tonight?" Kenny asked, breaking the silence. Kay smiled.
"Yup. When you gonna pick me up?" Kay replied back. Kenny shrugged.
"Whenever you want." Kenny said uncertainly. Kay then broke into a peal of laughter. Kenny looked at her confusedly.
"You are so funny!!" Kay laughed, shaking with mirth. Kenny frowned, trying to hide a smile unsuccessfully.
"Ya, whatever, Ami Victoria Kayleen." Kenny teased, calling her by her full name. Kay growled, and punched him lightly in the stomach.
"Don't call me that! How did you find out my full name?" Kay demanded, scowling. Kenny tickled her in the stomach, and she laughed.
"Your picture in the yearbook." Kenny said innocently.
"I am going to kill you!" Kay yelled, pummeling his chest uneffectively. Kenny took off, yelling back at her. Kay quickly sprinted off after him, berating him the whole way.
