Chapter II Reno and Vincent Valentine
The days following the town elders’ call, Shinra had decided to send one of their Turks to investigate the problem. Along with said Turk, Shinra’s most beloved General as well as a small squad to accompany them. Upon entering Nibelheim, Reno noticed that the town’s people were no where to be seen on the streets. Reno walked up to a house and knocked politely only to get shouted at from the closed door. Sephiroth had a little more luck than Reno though for he had knocked on the door of a closed bar and had gotten an answer from a closed window only to have the person disappear again. Sephiroth knocked once more as he began to lose his patience and ran a thumb along the hilt of Masamune.
“Please go away….you have no idea what your doing….please travelers go back to your home town….there is nothing for you here….” the female voice was shaky and scared but was soon replaced with that of an older male voice.
“Strangers do not last long here! Be gone strangers, you're not welcome!”
“We are from Shinra sir and we are here to investigate a disappearance in the old Shinra Mansion! Please, all we need is information and the possibility of someone explaining to us why everybody is locked in their homes!” Sephiroth had jumped slightly when he heard Reno’s voice next to him. He did not expect the young Turk to be by his side so quickly. There was silence on the other side of the door before it opened slightly to allow a brown eye to peer out. The man caught sight of Sephiroth and swung the door open to let his daughter get by before closing it behind him and locking it securely and placing a cross on the door knob.
“Please come with us General, the elders are waiting for you arrival. I beg pardon, but who is your friend?”
“I am Reno from the Turk division in Shinra and I could hardly say that me and the General are ‘friends’. Besides, who might you be?” Sephiroth growled low at the Turk but Reno ignored him as he waited for the man to answer.
“My name is Richard Lockhart and this is my daughter Tifa Lockhart. Now no more stalling, we must get to the meeting house before true nightfall hits.”
Richard lead Sephiroth and Reno along the dead empty main road of the town to the meeting house where numerous town meetings were held three or four times a week. The squad that had accompanied them was on high alert for the wind started to blow in the wrong direction for a town sitting at the foot of a mountain range. Sephiroth saw many people stare out their windows of their homes to gaze at them walking along the barren road. One person in particular had caught Sephiroth’s attention though; the woman had shoulder length blonde hair and stunning blue eyes. She watched Sephiroth closely before disappearing behind white curtains. Sephiroth turned his attention back to what was ahead of him and noticed several people standing in front of a one story house that could hold the hole town in for emergency meetings. Sephiroth already had the feeling that the house had seen more meetings in the passed few days than in the town’s lifetime.
“We have been awaiting your arrival General, we did not think that Shinra would keep their word about sending someone to investigate this but then again it is their fault that our precious gem is missing” Sephiroth stared at the elderly man that had spoken. He did not look more than 62 years of age but he still spoke as if he were in his twenties or thirties.
“I will be the judge about who’s fault it is that this person is missing and when I do you will be the first to know.” The old man glared at Sephiroth before turning away giving off an annoyed and angry air about him.
“Kids these days have no respect for their elders now do they? Well, do what you may then but I must warn you that you and your comrades must be off the streets by five, if not they will become the slave of the creature that haunts our town. Much to my disdain, I wish you luck General and I hope you do be careful.” the old man walked into the house leaving the rest of the elder’s outside to deal with Sephiroth.
“Oh please pay no mind to Kurt my dear General, he gets fussy when he can’t figure town problems on his own. My name is Bertha and I am the head of the town committee in Nibelheim. Please come into the meeting house so I can explain the situation at hand and you maybe inclined to understand what is going on a little more. Your soldiers and friend may come in as well, I do not want them standing around in the open as long as that creature is roaming our streets.” Sephiroth nodded while Reno grudgingly walked in after him mumbling something about people getting the wrong impression that he was Sephiroth’s friend.
“Bertha, I thank you for the hospitality but I believe that me and the rest of my squad will be able to handle any creature that might be causing such ruckus in your town.” Bertha slowly shook her head from side to side and silently prayed to god for protection.
“You do not understand what we are going through do you? Ever since our Cloud disappeared within that mansion, our town has been attacked by one of the mythical creatures of legend as it seems. You see, this creature is hard to kill because it seems that he has been in that mansion for so long that his power has grown to the point that the simple devices that are supposed to destroy him no longer work. Trust me we have already tried during the day when the creature was sleeping within his coffin and we also…”
“Wait, wait, wait…are you telling us that this thing that has been attacking your town and that had kidnapped this Cloud person is a vampire? I think you have been stuck indoors too long lady, you have gotten a bit crazy...OW!” Sephiroth nudged Reno in the ribs hard to shut him up while trying to keep his temper down.
“I assure you young man that this is no lie. Like I was saying, when we found where the creature was located we readied ourselves for the attack but we hit a slight problem. When we had found the vampire we also found our Cloud sleeping in the same coffin as that retched creature. We thought of the worst and decided to get rid of both because one, we wanted to be rid of the foul creature and two, we wanted to free Cloud from a life of being damned for all eternity. We never said anything to Shinra because they would never have believed us so we kept quiet until now. The question is, will you still help us now that you know the truth?” Sephiroth closed his eyes and went over every piece of information that had been presented to him and Reno before coming to a decision. Reno on the other hand was acting kind of odd.
“I think we should go to some place safer you guys…”
“Reno shut up for once and let me think with out hearing your voice!”
“Seph, I…I…I’m serious, we should go somewhere a whole lot safer…” Bertha stared at Reno for a little bit trying to figure out what was wrong with Reno until it dawned on her.
“Young man…uh…Reno was it? You can sense him can’t you? You know that he is nearby right?” Reno at this point was visibly shaking and it was not from fear. The room temperature had fallen to bellow forty degrees and the windows began to fog over from the obvious warmth from outside.
“Seph…” Reno fell to the floor in an unconscious heap on the floor or what every one thought was an unconscious heap. Sephiroth had gotten up and walked over to where Reno had fallen to the floor and noticed that the red head had not fallen unconscious but had died after saying the little nickname he had given Sephiroth. Sephiroth checked Reno for any injury that had occurred unforeseen and his search had come up with a result. Reno’s neck had two puncture wounds at the base and they were not but an inch and a half to two inches apart.
“Bertha you seem to know more about this than I, what do you think?” the old woman gasped when she saw the wound on Reno’s neck.
“He has been bitten! Get away from him General! Eric grab the crucifix and the stake, we must kill him while he is in this state!” Eric, who was in his late forties, had brought the items Bertha had told him to get. Bertha began to say a prayer as the room got unnaturally dark and the air got colder as the prayer went on. As Bertha raised the stake to stab Reno through the heart, the red head reached up and grabbed the old woman’s wrist and pushed her hard enough to send her flying against a wall.
“Hahahahahahaha! Do you silly humans think that I will allow you to destroy my second lover so easily? I still hate you for injuring my Cloud the way you did and now he is still recovering but he needs fresh blood to help the healing process along a little faster. I was going to bring him your beautiful little red headed friend but I thought I might as well as take him too. Cloud will be happy to have company with him when I am on the hunt…now who will be their first feed, I know my loves are starving for your blood. Who will it be?” A pair of glowing red eyes had settled on Sephiroth for a few moments before traveling to each and every soldier assessing them. When he settled for the one closer to him, the vampire darkened the room fully and made out with Reno and a screaming soldier while leaving everyone else in the darkened room. When light finally filtered through from the morning sun, Sephiroth looked around to see who was missing besides Reno and the first class cadet. When he was satisfied that everybody was alright he approached Bertha who was still recovering from being thrown against a wall.
“Tell me Bertha, where is it exactly that this creature resides in the mansion and what is his name?”
“Vincent…”Bertha wheezed out not able to catch her breath “His name…is Vincent…Valentine…if you…if you want…want more infor…information…look to the Turk…database…he is…is an ex-Turk…you will…get…get the reason for…for why he is…the way he is…” Finally after she finished speaking, Bertha let out one more breath before dying of a crushed rib cage and severely punctured lungs and heart. Sephiroth grabbed a phone from one of the cadets and contacted Tseng immediately.
“Tseng, two things…Reno is gone and I need you to look up an ex-Turk by the name of Vincent Valentine. He has something to do with Reno’s disappearance and the disappearance of one of Nibelheim’s inhabitants. I want all information on him and don’t skip anything out, we need everything to figure this shit out.” Without giving the head Turk a chance to ask questions, Sephiroth had hung up and handed the phone back to the cadet. He sighed deeply before turning to the grieving elders and the slowly trickling in town’s people. “This is going to be a long day” He mumbled to himself as he fingered the hilt of Masamune trying to plan out the next thing to do but he came up empty.
