Chapter One: Cloud and…Yuffie?
Tifa sighed, looking out the dark, thick glass that separated her from the howling wind outside. She didn't know if the howling actually existed, or if it was yet another parlor trick, created to delightfully scare the patrons of the Ghost Hotel. She couldn't really enjoy it. There was too much on her mind. Outside the window, there was a small child with its family. Her high pitched squeals of delight could be heard through the glass. Tifa smiled, but it didn't reach her coffee eyes.
When had her life become so complicated? It seemed like only yesterday, Tifa's biggest worry was how many customers the Seventh Heaven would get, and now…. Now, she was chasing around her childhood friend, looking for a temple that may not even exist. Tifa hadn't even ever given the Ancients and their mythology any thought previously, and now, Aeris and her people, her way of life, were a driving force in Tifa's life.
Aeris…. Tifa sighed. I wonder if she's with Cloud right now…….
Tifa couldn't believe that she was actually…. Jealous. It's not like Cloud ever showed any real sexual interest in her, and he didn't belong to her. And it wasn't as if Aeris was a horrible person, bent on stealing away Tifa's happiness…. Suddenly, Tifa felt something brush against her bare arm. It was fuzzy feeling, causing her skin to pop up with goosebumps.
"Damn…" Tifa trailed off, feeling silly for getting scared over the drapery, which was swaying gently from an unseen breeze. It somewhat unnerved the lean brunette that the curtains were blowing, and the window was closed…..
Tifa decided to get some sleep, finding that sitting around getting lost in her own head wasn't doing any good. As soon as her muscular shoulders hit the soft mattress, she heard voices outside her door.
"What the…?" She propped her weight on her elbow, the metal clasps of her black suspenders digging almost painfully into her exposed side. Once of the voices sounded like Cloud; low, monotonous, not the least bit interested. The second voice was a female. Tifa's heart sank for a moment.
"Cloud and Aeris…" she mused to herself, talking to the empty air in the now lonely room.
"Come on, Cloud!" The exasperated female chided. It wasn't Aeris…. It was Yuffie. Her gravely, energy filled voice coming easily through the heavy wooden door. A sense of relief washed over Tifa as she unbound her long, chestnut locks. They cascaded around her, toppling in thick brown waves around her body, snaking onto the mattress. The voices became muffled as they got further and further away. Tifa couldn't help but smirk, her deep, cherry lips curling up at the corners. She never pictured Cloud liking them so young.
"Cloud and Yuffie?" She asked herself. It seemed that Tifa was talking to herself a lot lately. There were some things that she was to nervous, spineless to talk to Cloud about. And everyone was on edge about Sephiroth, so conversation had fallen by the wayside. The only light in that scenario was Aeris. Tifa marveled at how the slender flower merchant could keep her spirits so high. She seemed to take everything in stride, the good and the bad, her eyes always glinting as brightly as the materia tied into her light brown hair, the colour of dark, rich butterscotch. Tifa always bogged herself down with the issues around her, and hadn't really stopped to smell the flowers since her involvement with Barret and Avalanche began.
Tifa lost herself in various thoughts again, laying fully dressed, staring at the dark ceiling. She was pulled out of her soupy lamentations by a soft knock at the door. Tifa made a grunt of acknowledgement, too tired to even bother to form tangible words. She didn't even bother to cast her brown eyes towards the door as it opened, slowly, hesitantly.
"Tifa?"
Tifa sat up, quickly, startled. Aeris's voice cut through her. She had expected a handmaid, or someone else. The slender woman slowly stepped into the room, closing the door softly behind her.
"Aeris? What are you doing here?" Tifa fully sat up, her hair falling around her shoulders.
Aeris's clear, green eyes cast to Tifa. She had never seen the shapely martial artist with her long tresses loose. It made her look like a nymph from a Renaissance painting, coy and beautiful. "Did I interrupt you?"
Tifa furrowed her brow. Aeris's normally quiet, breathy voice sounded more hushed than usual. "What's wrong?"
"I'm looking for Cloud. Do you know where he is?"
Tifa smirked, her full lips sliding over her pearly teeth. "Yeah, I heard him leave with Yuffie."
Aeris raised her elegant eyebrows. "Yuffie?"
Tifa nodded, standing. "Yeah. I was sort of surprised, too."
Aeris smiled brightly, her eyes shining happily. "I never really pegged Cloud as a purveyor of Kiddie Porn."
The brunette laughed, her shoulders shaking. Her full breasts heaved as she tried to catch her breath. "Oh god….."
Aeris grinned. She was glad to hear Tifa laugh. It sounded very refreshing. The Ancient considered Tifa to be a close friend, even if they hadn't known each other that long. It made Aeris feel good that she made Tifa laugh. It was actually a rare noise, and that seemed to be a total shame. Tifa's laugh was throaty, coming out of her entire body, lighting up her heart shaped face, making her coffee eyes luminous, showing her true inner light.
After Tifa had controlled herself, she smiled. "I don't think Cloud knew, either. Yuffie can be pretty persuasive. And, she's stronger than she looks."
"Well, it is `enchanted night'. All the attractions are free. Maybe she's trying to steal his materia…?" Aeris's voice took up a note of suspicion.
Tifa stroked her chin playfully. "Yeah, I'm sure she's trying to get her hands on Cloud's shining orbs…"
Aeris dissolved into giggles. "Tifa!"
"What?" Tifa gave the pink clad woman a mischievous gaze.
"Do you think Yuffie even knows about that sort of stuff?" Aeris leaned against the bedpost.
Tifa shrugged. "Probably. She's not really naïve."
"No, I guess she isn't…." Aeris trailed off, fiddling with the pink satin ribbon that held back her long braid.
