Chapter 3: Crimson Regrets

All the little pieces falling shadder:

Shards of me, too sharp to put back together;

Too small to matter,

But big enough to cut me into so many little pieces.

"Do you think you can explain the dreams, doctor?" Garnet asked Doctor Tot. She was laying on her bed as he sat on a chair beside it. He was quiet, and she looked at his face with his long nose. He shook his head.

"I cannot…" Doctor Tot stated. "My guesses are he is dead. I know it will be hard, but you're gonna have to get on without him."

"I can't!" Garnet said, sitting up. "What do you think I've been trying to do for the past year? I've tried so hard to tell myself he's gone. I've been offered into marriage many of times, refusing every time, thinking that he'll be back. Even though he's still with me in my mind and dreams, I've been alone all along." Doctor thought about this. There was no way Zidane could be alive, considering what Garnet told him about her dream.

"If what happened in your dream, your majesty." Doctor Tot started. "Zidane is dead, his bones would've been crushed…but it's very unusual for one to have a vision in their dreams. This raises the point though, you are a Summoner, and you came from the Mystical city of Madain Sari…There have been rumours that they have visions."

Then that's it. Garnet said in her mind. I visioned Zidane's death…He's gone now. She looked at Doctor Tot, her face turning white as her pupils got big.

"I-I'm sorry your highness." Doctor Tot bowed. He then got up and left the room. Garnet looked off into the nothingness of the room. Silence consuming her ears. She didn't know what to do. She felt like crying, but the tears wouldn't shed. She felt like there was nothing there anymore. She felt a huge, hollow emptiness throughout her body.

Outside her room, stood Doctor Tot with Beatrix.

"How is she?" Beatrix whispered. Doctor Tot looked up at the long dirty blond haired woman with sad eyes.

"Zidane's dead." Doctor Tot said, following a long, dreary silence. Beatrix looked at the door. She wanted to comfort the lost soul on the other side, but it would be best to leave her be right now. They both walked down the halls, leaving the Queen to suffer alone.

Garnet walked down the dark halls of the castle. She'd been doing a lot of thinking lately. A lot of thinking of things she'd never think about. She has become so low. She couldn't go on without Zidane.

Why did he do it? She thought in her mind. Why did he leave me? He knew he was going to die! He knew it!! Why must he have tormented me so?? …It's like it was suicide…Yes, suicide. That would solve a lot of problems. No one would miss me…They'd get a new King or Queen. If Zidane did it, why can't I do it? Why should he be the only one who can run away from his problems? Why should he be the only one who's veins will rest in the grave for all eternity? Her eyes were dry and red from the tears that flowed through her eyes. It was the middle of the night, and everyone was sleeping.

No one would know till morning, I'll be far from being able to be saved… I don't want to be saved. I want to die. The thoughts, while they scared her, also felt as a bit of relief to her. Goodbye Alexandria! She broke into a run, running to her room. Shadows of the castle filled all over the place as light from the two moons in the sky filled the chambers.

She soon arrived in her room and looked in the mirror, at her pretty little face, with her long pretty hair flowing down behind her long pretty dress. Her pretty little crown on her pretty little head. She was sick of looking pretty; she only dressed up to wait for the day of Zidane's return.

She threw her crown at the mirror as shards of her fell apart and shattered on the floor. She picked up a small prism of the glass. Her dark, sorrowful, brown eyes stared back at her through it. She took off the glove on her hand, and pressed the sharp glass against her wrist. Again she did it. She watched as the blood stained the piece of glass and trickle down her wrist. She felt a bit of a sensation run through her body. The room started fading to black.

Steiner did his nightly patrol down the halls of the palace. Soon, he heard a shatter in Queen Garnet's chambers.

"Your highness?" He panicked. He broke into a run as he dashed towards her room. Once he opened the door, he saw the mirror shards broken on the floor, as his Queen lay on the floor with a shard of glass. There was blood stains on the carpet. He looked frantically at her arm as blood ran down her wrists. "Your highness!"

As things were going dark, Garnet smiled. She could barely think. All she could think was: Don't worry Zidane, we will be together again shortly…I promise. If I die, it means you're dead and we will live for eternity on the other side. If not, if I do survive, it means you're alive…somewhere out there. She could here Steiner. He sounded so far away, his voice echoing in her head. Soon he could hear Beatrix, Doctor Tot, and others. They sounded like hushed whispers, yet loud screams. She lay her head back, and everything went black.
