Chapter 2
A group of travelers sat around a cheerful fire and talked among themselves. The smells of roasting fish and the rich smell of broth permeated the air. The silver haired man leaned against the trunk of the tree with a sigh and a yawn. “Damn it how long is it going to take to find him?” he said aloud. The second man added another branch to the fire and checked the fish. “Come now Inuyasha, Naraku is biding his time. While we wander in search of him, there is no doubt he is plotting some kind of dirty trap for us all now that we have become more than a slight irritation.” He said sitting back down. “One thing for sure though I'll bet Naraku would love to get his hands on Kagome.” The young fox demon said earning him a glare from Inuyasha.
The two girls stood up suddenly. “We're going to take a bath in the hot spring while we wait for dinner. So you better not peek at us, Miroku!” Kagome said wagging her finger in front of his face. He looked at her in surprise. “I would never…how could you think that of me?” Miroku asked innocently. Inuyasha choked on the broth he had been drinking. “Well it's probably because you're such a lecher Miroku.” Shippo replied casually. Miroku frowned “I've been misunderstood.” He explained as the girls left. He took a long sip on his tea. Inuyasha snorted. “Spare us. We've heard all this before. We hear it every time the girls have gone to bathe. Although you know that the girls are expecting it by now.” He said disinterestedly sipping his broth again.
Miroku stood up with a lecherous smile. “Very well then you all already know what I plan to do, right?” Inuyasha stood up and looked the direction the girls had gone. ““Right.” Like hell, I am not just going to sit here and let you spy on Kagome.” Miroku turned around and looked as his good friend. “You could come with me you know. Kagome has grown into quite a woman these past years.” Inuyasha blushed. “Like hell I will! I have more respect for her then that!” Miroku shrugged. “If, that is your decision Inuyasha. But you don't know what you are missing. Her soft skin, her slim figure, her round curves…” He droned on as he walked away.
Inuyasha felt his face heat again with a blush as his mind replayed that night at Togenkyo. He would never forget what he had seen there as he'd burst into that basement room. As he'd burst through the door Kagome jumped up a bright smile on her face; wearing nothing but the few glistening drops of the potion she been left in by the fake sage. He felt a hotter blush creep into his cheeks. He had to agree Kagome was beautiful. Her skin looked soft and smooth like silk… He shook his head to clear his mind of the memory. “What the hell am I thinking!” he growled at him self standing up. He cracked his knuckles and vaulted in to the trees.
Kagome and Sango sat on the edge of the spring wrapped loosely in towels. “How much more of the jewel is left to find do you think?” Sango asked Kagome as she slid down into the water. Kagome sighed. “I'm afraid that Naraku has almost all of them except the chunk we have and the two shards Koga has. We have to be really careful now. The jewel pieces we have are all that is stopping him. He won't stay away for long now that the final pieces of the jewel are the only things keeping him from his goal.” Kagome sighed again. “Sango don't tell the others, but I have a feeling that the last battle is closing in on us faster than we think it is. I have a bad feeling about it, but I don't know why.” Kagome said as a shiver of dread ran up her spine. Sango sighed contentedly in the hot water. “Inuyasha will be there to protect you so you shouldn't worry so much.” She stated soothingly. Kagome frowned, ducking lower into the water `Maybe. Inuyasha's been acting strange around me. It's as though he just looks through me again.' Kagome looked down at the reflection in the water and frowned again.
Kenshin walked silently through the forest following the sound of female voices. When he had arrived he had been standing on the exact spot he'd left as near as he could tell, from the valley behind him but exactly when he was he didn't know. He paused for a moment. “I'm positive one of them just asked about a jewel.” He walked on coming closer to the voices. Soon a mist filled the air. Kenshin froze trying to avert his eyes from the women he had walked in on bathing. One of them in particular caught his eyes. Or maybe it was the chunk of a pale pink jewel that hung just above her breasts which caught his gaze. The women were relaxing on the edge of a hot spring barely covered by the wet towels that clung revealingly to their bodies. He blinked. Blushing he turned his back and started back the way he'd come when both of the girls screamed.
“Ugh! You pervert! You are disgusting you Peeping Tom!”
Kenshin froze thinking he'd been seen and then glancing over his shoulder he saw another man on the opposite side of the spring. The man stood there stood there laughing as the women yelled at him then as Kenshin watched the man began to run. Kenshin drew his reverse blade and sprang over the rocks he was disgusted that a man wearing what appeared to be monks robes would behave in such a way. Determined to teach the man respect Kenshin stood and blocked the monks' path as he gripped his sword hilt in a fighting stance. “How dare you show such disrespect to women? Have you no honor?” Kenshin demanded angrily. Miroku raised his hands helplessly. “I am unarmed good sir. Please lower your weapon and let me pass.” He looked back towards the spring. His eyes open wide in fear. “Please my life is in danger.” He pleaded as he looked over his shoulder. Sango had become more violent as of late. Kenshin heard the snapping of tree branches and a very large boulder came barreling at them. Kenshin turned. “Hiten Mitsurugi style Do Ryu Sen!” he said sending his ultra sonic attack at the boulder, splitting it in half. Eyes closed Kenshin returned his sword to the sheath. Miroku blinked “I've never seen such swordsmanship. Thank you so very much.” The monk said offering a smile. Kenshin turned to face him coldly. “I did not demolish that rock to save you and unless you give me some explanation for your behavior I will have no choice but to teach you respect the hard way.” He said glaring dangerously at the man whose smile was slowly fading. “The two delightful ladies standing behind you are Sango the demon slayer and Kagome Higurashi. They are my dearest friends but I never could resist a beautiful woman.” He said putting his hand behind his head and eyeing Sango openly.
The women he was eying stepped forward. “You better be glad I didn't bring Hirikotsu you letch! Haven't you learned not to spy on me yet after all these years? You have a lot of nerve” she said furiously shaking her fist. Miroku held up his hands. “I just can't resist your beauty my dear Sango.” The woman wearing the jewel glared angrily at the monk. “And what's your excuse for peeking at me?” Miroku swallowed at the menacing look on Sango's face. “It's not our beauty you are gawking at is it honorable monk.” She said with a voice laced with sarcasm.
Kenshin sensed a fighting presence coming at them at a speed almost unbelievable to any but him, and spun his hand on his reversed blade sword hilt as he did. A young man in red clothing jumped out of the trees behind them. Inuyasha snarled baring his fangs. “I thought I told you I wouldn't let you peek at her Miroku…” he said glaring at the monk angrily. He noticed Kenshin and turned angry amber colored eyes on him. “Who the hell do you think you are?” he demanded looking at the unfamiliar man wearing a sword. Kagome ran between them placing her hands on Inuyasha's chest. “Inuyasha, calm down; he just stopped Miroku from spying on us. He helped us out.” Kagome turned her deep brown eyes to Kenshin smiling warmly. “Thank you so much Mr.…” Kenshin relaxed the hand on his sword seeing no further reason to have it tensed.
“Himura. Kenshin Himura.” Kagome looked at him closely studying his cross shaped scar. Kenshin began to feel uneasy under her soul filled gaze. Her eyes widened in recognition. “You wouldn't happen to be the Hitokiri Battousai Kenshin Himura, would you?” Kenshin's lavander eyes widened slightly as surprised he met her brown eyes. Kagome laughed with delight her deep brown eyes sparkling with excitement. “Wow! Can I shake your hand? Who would have thought he was real?” Kagome smiled warmly offering her hand. “Hi I'm Kagome Higurashi.” Kagome withdrew her hand to place her finger against her chin in thought. “Hey wait a sec. The Meiji government didn't come to power until 1867. What are you doing in the warring states era?” she asked looking a little confused.
Kenshin looked at her silently for a moment cautiously reading her emotions. `So this is the warring states era and she must be the keeper of the jewel.' He thought studying her for a moment. Her eyes caught him off guard. They were bright and clear yet there was sadness in them that went deeper then he could see; even when she laughed it was forced. Her face was pale and deep circles lined her eyes. She kept gripping the jewel as though it was a life line. Despite the happiness she showed the woman was deeply hurting inside. So much so that it made his heart ache strangely for the pain she was feeling. He pushed down the feeling and rested his arm on the sword hilt at his side. “How do you know about me and the Meiji government?” Kenshin asked with a hint of suspicion in his voice. She had taken him off guard by her question and he wanted answers. Kagome waved her hand and put a finger to her lips. “I'll tell you back at our camp sight. We can't be too careful right now. You see a terrible demon is after this.” She held up the chunk of a glowing jewel. Inuyasha placed his hand on the hilt of his sword shoving her behind him roughly; nearly knocking her to her over with the force. “Kagome shut up! How do you know we can even trust this guy? He could be a trap to deceive us. ” He growled his amber eyes glowing fiercely. He was ready for a fight. Kenshin looked him over as an opponent. “You can't win. Don't draw your sword.” Kenshin said unconcernedly. Inuyasha glared at him. “Is that a challenge?” he snarled. Kenshin closed his eyes; his arm relaxing on the hilt of his sword tensed just enough in case the man in front of him decided to fight any way. “No. It was a warning and the only one I'll give.” Inuyasha bristled angrily showing sharp fangs as he yelled. “You…You're just a pesky human! How could you beat me?” He began to draw his Tetsaigua. Kenshin eased in to a fighting stance and touched his sword hilt in anticipation of the seemingly unavoidable duel.
“Inuyasha, sit.” Kagome said under her breath sounding tired. Inuyasha slammed face down in the dirt; obscenities muffled by the ground came from him in a steady stream. Kenshin looked down at the man in surprise. “Sorry about that. Inuyasha is a half demon and boy does he have a temper. Especially when it comes to the jewel.” Kagome apologized softly and turned around to face Kenshin, an accusing light in her eyes. “You really shouldn't push his buttons though.” Kagome said softly. Kenshin bowed his head slightly to be polite. “I was very serious, Miss Kagome. That is your name is it not?” Kagome nodded and smiled leading him back to the campsite. “What brings you to this time?” She asked quietly as she sat in front of the fire. A small two tailed cat climbed into her lap and began purring as Kagome rubbed its ears. Sango sat next to the fire on the other side casting furious glares at a very black and blue monk.
Kenshin sat down on one of the logs by the fire close to Kagome trying to consider what would be wise to say. Inuyasha sat opposite them on the ground watching and glaring at Kenshin directly Tetsaigua was leaned against his shoulder within easy reach the triangular ears atop his head twitched. Kagome looked around. “I have a weird feeling that I should trust you, Kenshin, so I'll tell you my story if you'll tell me yours okay?” she said softly. Kenshin nodded. “Very well Miss Kagome.” He said his voice lowered as hers had been. Kagome looked around again almost nervously. “This might be hard to believe but I live five hundred years in the future and it's my fault the jewel is in pieces, so I've been crossing back and forth from this time and my time for three years now to find all of the shards. We know that the jewel is close to being completed. Once Naraku had almost all of the pieces but I accidentally shattered the jewel again and Naraku escaped during the confusion. But that only means that we have to be extra careful now.”
Kagome looked at Kenshin studying him silently in the fire light as he looked in to the flames. He had such emotion filled eyes although it seemed he tried to hide it. He felt her eyes on him and turned his eyes to her. “Miss Kagome?” he asked as that same aching longing feeling washing over him again as he caught her gaze. She looked away quickly blushing but Kenshin did not turn away. `There is something about her eyes, I am drawn to. Is it her sadness?' he wondered.
Kagome looked back up at him but her eyes were clouded her emotions hidden. “I thought you were just a legend, a red haired man with a cross-shaped scar, the Hitokiri Battousai, Himura Kenshin who brought about the Meiji government. I learned about you in my history class at school. The hero of the Meiji revolution really exists. Gramps would be thrilled! He's always telling the stories behind the items at our shrine. I think he has a sword of yours; the Sakabattou I believe. I'll have to ask him when I go home next.” Kagome said fidgeting again with the jewel. Kenshin blinked had he heard her correctly? He had been immortalized as a hero in the history books? What nonsense he was not a hero. All he had done in the revolution was kill and fight to kill. He looked down at the sword at his side in deep thought. Who would know about the reversed blade, except him self and Sir Shakku Arai the swords smith who had given it to him a year ago? Kenshin glanced over at Kagome keeping his head lowered to hide his eyes as he studied her. There was no lie in her eyes when she had spoken, but still he was doubtful of her words. Kagome looked over at him, “why are you here in this time?” she asked again gesturing around with her hand. Kenshin sighed choosing his words carefully.
“Miss Kagome, I am no hero, but you could say I was selected by fate, to be the sacred shikon jewels' protector.” He said emotionlessly. Inuyasha's ear twitched. Kagome touched the shard around her neck. “You know of the sacred jewel?” Kenshin smiled dryly “Only from legend. You are the keeper of the jewel are you not?” he asked suddenly remembering the task given to him, “find the sacred jewel and protect her”. Kagome nodded slowly. He looked at her with bold confidence. “That makes me your protector as well then.” He said bluntly. Kagome blinked in surprise.
Inuyasha jumped to his feet. “What the hell, are you babbling about I am her protector. Just who the hell do you think you are coming here and saying things like that to her? There's no way you can protect her like I can. No human is ever going to take my place as her protector you got that? If you defeat me though I'll let you live.” He said furiously as he continued cracking his knuckles brandishing his sharp claws. Kagome stood up silently and walked out of the fire light her eyes hidden by shadows. Kenshin stood up slowly and glared at Inuyasha boldly, one hand on his Sakabattou. “The task I was given was to find the sacred jewel and protect her. As the jewels keeper I can only assume I was also given the task to protect Miss Kagome. As for “allowing me to live should I defeat you”, those are my words.” Kenshin said looking up at Inuyasha his eyes glittering dangerously as they had turned amber. Glancing over to where Kagome stood watching he frowned. Inuyasha glanced over and lowered his fists; letting them fall to his sides glaring contemptuously. “I don't need some pesky human thinking he can wander in and take over. I don't like the way you smell, but if she says she trusts you that's a good enough reason for me not to kill you right here. But I don't trust you got it? I'm going to keep my eyes on you and if you do anything to hurt anyone, you won't live long enough to regret it.” He said bluntly walking away.
Kenshin looked at him with narrowed eyes and a slight frown. `Why did he back down? Why was I ready to fight for her?' he wondered. Inuyasha sat back down his sword resting against his chest in a pose Kenshin knew well; although Inuyasha looked relaxed he was still poised to fight his ears kept twitching furiously. Kenshin sat back down and turned to Kagome. She wiped her eyes with her hand. “Smoke got in my eyes.” she explained feebly as she walked back over and took her seat; carefully avoiding looking at the half demon. Kenshin looked at her watchfully; the sadness in her eyes seemed deeper and more prominent the cloudiness was gone and he clearly felt the urge to comfort her return.
He added another log to the fire as he fought down his confusing emotions. “You said it is your fault the jewel is broken, but why is that Miss Kagome?” Kenshin asked carefully, taking his seat beside her again. Kagome looked up at the stars as she sat back down. “It all began fifty three years ago when Inuyasha was pinned to the sacred tree with an arrow…” As Kagome began the familiar story Inuyasha stood and jumped up in to the trees above the camp. Although it was subtle Kenshin's eyes did not miss the increase of pain in her deep eyes as he listened intently to her story.
Kenshin nodded his head slowly when she finished speaking “I see. So this Naraku has most of the jewel then? And what of this priestess who was revived from the dead?” Kagome looked away and hung her head her sorrow nearly tangible. Kenshin frowned as he watched the emotions show in her eyes. “We don't know what she's planning to do. But we do know that she has given a large part of the jewel to Naraku and has helped him on more than one occasion and now that the jewel is nearly complete again I am sure she is helping him again.” she said softly her voice little more than a whisper. Kenshin frowned again “I'm sorry to have brought up such a painful topic.” Kagome shook her head forcing herself to smile. Kenshin winced mentally at the open sorrow in her smile. `It's only painful that he's still in love with her and not me.' She thought looking at Inuyasha staring up at the star filled sky. His softened expression voiced his thoughts loudly. He was thinking of Kikyo. Inuyasha stood up and jumped down from the tree and walked off lost in his own memories. `You still love her even though she's dead and has chosen to assist Naraku. Don't you Inuyasha? There's no place for me here but I still can't let go, why?' Kagome thought as tears began to sting her eyes.
Kenshin stood up and put another log on the fire. Silently he stared in to the flames. `What is hurting you so deeply that even your spirit is affected, Miss Kagome? Why do I care so much? My only reason to be here is to get the jewel and change what ever happened to that woman. I should not get involved too deeply with anyone here. I know that; so why do Miss Kagome's eyes bother me so much?' he wondered. Glancing back at Kagome he frowned. “I have kept you awake too long. You must be tired.”
Kagome stifled a yawn. “Yeah I am, but I don't mind. I haven't been sleeping very well anyway.” She crouched down by the fire and placed a kettle on the coals. “Would you like some green tea?” she asked pulling out a couple of cups. Kenshin nodded looking around the silent camp. Everyone had fallen asleep one by one. “Your companions are all asleep. Do you normally remain awake all night Miss Kagome?” Kenshin asked quietly. Kagome nodded her head. “Lately my nightmares have gotten worse.” He frowned recalling what he'd over heard by the spring. “`The last battle is closing in on us fast…I have a bad feeling about it.'” Kenshin watched her silently as she stared at the fire. A tear slipped down her cheek. He shook his head. “The tea?” He reminded her softly. Kagome smiled ignoring the tears “You know you really aren't anything like the man I always imagined from Grandpa's stories or the history book. You look like a Samurai but are you really the Hitokiri Battousai?” Kenshin looked away with a frown. “I have no attachments to that name any longer. I killed thousands under that name. You can just call me Kenshin. I'm not a Hitokiri any more.” He said more firmly and coldly than he had intended. Kagome poured them some tea and took a sip with a shrug. “Ok Kenshin.” The rest of the night Kagome sat in silence staring at the flames. Every so often she'd look up and wipe her eyes. Kenshin watched her thoughtfully. He had a million questions but of them all only one stood out in his mind: “Why is she sad?”
Kenshin watched her silently. As the fire slowly began to die; she finally lay down and fell in to a restless sleep leaving Kenshin awake to ponder everything she had said. Did she really come from another time, like he had? What was so significant about this time that two people from other times would be drawn here? Was it the jewel that everything revolved around or was there more to it? He found his gaze drifting over to where Kagome slept. `I've never seen eyes like those before. Her eyes are so beautiful and so sad. I wonder what those eyes would look like happy. I almost wish I could see it. Her true smile, unhindered by sadness like she is now, would be beautiful.'
He blinked at himself. `When did I become so easily interested with a woman's looks? I am not here to find a woman's eyes captivating; I am here for the jewel and I can not let my guard down even for a second. That Inuyasha might become a dangerous opponent one day but I don't think that he will be a challenge either way.' Kenshin once again felt his eyes drift towards her and finally turned his back leaning against the other side of the log. `I can not get involved personally. Even if she is beautiful; I have to keep at a distance. I said I would protect her and I will keep my word, but…'
The morning sunlight spilled through the trees as Kagome opened her eyes. The conversation she'd had the night before with Kenshin was hazy in her memory as she rubbed her eyes. Sango sat near the fire a watchful expression on her face. “Inuyasha went to catch some more fish and Miroku was gone when I woke up. I'm sure he's out womanizing again no doubt, that slimy Letcher. I don't know where that other guy went.” She said callously. Kagome yawned. “Do you mind if I go take a bath to wake up, Sango?” Sango shook her head and looked at Kagome her expression softening. “You didn't sleep again last night did you and you hardly ate a bite at dinner. Kagome if you continue like this you'll get really sick. I'm your friend aren't I? Is something bothering you? Why won't you talk to me like you used to any more?” she asked worriedly. Kagome remained silent her eyes hidden. Sango sighed, “Just Take Kirara with you though alright? I'll make breakfast.”
Kagome nodded. She gathered up her bathing supplies and some clean clothes. Kirara transformed in to her larger size and walked beside her. Kagome was exhausted. It had been over a month since she'd had a goodnights sleep or eaten a full meal. She looked at her reflection in the water. She was much thinner and her eyes had dark circles under them. Other than that Kagome refused to look at her reflection. It always seemed as though Kikyo looked back at her. As she had aged the last three years her spiritual power had increased. Since her eighteenth birthday three days ago Kagome felt different inside. Kagome disturbed the water to banish the reflection. “I am Kagome not Kikyo.” She reminded herself as she braided her hair and pinned it up. She shivered slightly as she undressed and slid in to the hot water of the spring. Kagome closed her eyes and let the heat soothe her. `Inuyasha won't even look me in the eyes anymore. He only looks through me, again. Last night was the first time in months that he's even said that he's my protector. It's no wonder I began to cry. He used to say it all the time. Sometimes he won't even say my name now. He never stays close to camp at night anymore either. I miss knowing he's watching over me.' Kagome thought sadly as a tear slipped down her cheek and landed with a soft plop in the water. `Still I feel sorry for him though. It must be really difficult knowing the woman he loves has truly betrayed him since she is now with Naraku. What could she be thinking? At one time Inuyasha said she was planning to defeat Naraku on her own but that was before when we all thought Naraku had killed her. Will he have to fight Kikyo? Will I have to fight her? What will I do? What can I do?' she wondered as she looked at her reflection in the hot water.
Kenshin leaned against the rocks of the hot spring. The hot water was soothing to his stiff muscles. He hadn't slept well his mind wouldn't quiet down after Kagome had gone silent. But that was hardly a surprise as he had time traveled and was unfamiliar with his surroundings; it couldn't possibly be the other reason. `I'm not worried about her am I?' He had been stiff and sore when he'd awoken and the first thing he'd thought of was the hot spring. Kenshin had left the camp silently in the dark as to not awaken anyone and made his way into the clearing. The hot spring was divided in two by a line of large boulders that separated the larger section from a smaller more secluded section. Kenshin had chosen the smaller section and had left his clothes in a neat pile on the edge just past the natural divider, as there was nowhere else to put his clothes to keep them dry. The reverse blade sword leaned against the rocks within easy reach if there was trouble. Heaving a sigh he closed his eyes his senses alert. Soon after the sun had risen he heard a gentle splash and turned to investigate the sound. He blinked and ducked quickly back behind the rock a blush on his cheeks. Kagome stood naked in the water with her back to him. Kenshin looked over to where his clothes lay and gulped. `I can't get my clothes without being seen; no matter how I look at it I'll just have to wait here until she finishes and leaves.' He thought leaning back against the rock.
Kagome lifted her head and looked around feeling suddenly exposed, vulnerable and watched. “I must be imagining things.” She said laughing nervously. Kirara laid her head down on her paws as though nothing was amiss. Kagome tried to relax and push the thought from her mind. She closed her eyes. `No someone is defiantly here. Behind me, is it Naraku or one of his henchmen? Why hasn't Kirara sensed it?' she thought as she searched her mind for some idea of who she was sensing. Slowly she reached for her bow and a single arrow after not being able to place who it was. Drawing the arrow she turned and fired. She heard a groan and a splash from the other side of the spring.
Kirara growled and bore her fangs at the sound suddenly alert. Grabbing her towel she wrapped it around her body. As she was climbing out of the water Kagome noticed a neat pile of folded clothing. A sick feeling grew in the pit of her stomach as she walked around the boulder having a good idea of who she would find. Her aim had been true. Kenshin lay face down unmoving in the hot water her arrow protruding from his back.
“Kenshin! Oh no! I'm so sorry” Kagome said. Grabbing his kimono she closed her eyes and pulled him from the spring. Covering him with the kimono she gripped the arrow and pulled. The arrow came out easily and she threw it out of the way. Rolling him over on to his back she began to cry. “Kenshin, I'm so sorry. Please don't die.” Kagome sat beside him for a moment as panic closed around her. Kenshin had stopped breathing, and she couldn't find a pulse. Kagome hugged his head to her chest as she wept harder. He groaned and took a deep breath his eyes opening slowly. Kagome blinked and looked down at him still holding his head to her heart. He looked up at her kneeling beside him crying. `Is she crying for me?' he wondered as he looked at her tears. “Forgive me, Miss Kagome; it was not my intention to put you in such an awkward situation.” Kenshin said pulling away and sitting up; carefully keeping himself covered. Kagome looked at him in shock and relief. “It should have killed you. I-I thought you were dead.” Kagome said as more tears fell from her eyes. Without warning she hugged him. He was baffled, why should anyone care about him? Blushing at the close contact of her skin on his; he removed her arms from around him and looked at her. She blushed and smiled at him through her tears. Her eyes showed relief and worry. Kenshin picked up the blood stained arrow and looked at it ruefully “Not likely. I'm cursed.” He said.
Kagome stood up and went to get dressed as she realized she was sitting there with nothing but a wet towel covering her. After she'd gone around the boulder Kenshin stood up to get dressed as well. While Kenshin was dressing he closed his eyes. He could still see her face as clearly as if she had been standing in front of him looking at him with her haunting eyes. She had been weeping for him. He sighed, every time he closed his eyes he could see her. That had partially been why he hadn't slept the night before. He walked over to the large boulder and called softly to Kagome. She called back that she was clothed. Kenshin came over to her side of the spring.
“You have deadly aim Miss Kagome. There is no doubt in my mind that if I were able to die, I would be dead.” He said sitting down beside her on the rocks. Kagome shook her head her hand over her mouth tears streaming down her cheeks. “I am so sorry, Kenshin.” She cried softly. Kenshin shook his head. “Don't be. I understand your reasons. You sensed me behind you and reacted out of instinct. I would have done the same in your place.” Kenshin smiled slightly at her reassuringly keeping his eyes averted so that he would not see her eyes filled with tears for him again. “Miss Kagome, there is no need to tell anyone of this, is there?” he asked. Kagome shook her head. “Inuyasha would just get even more suspicious of you if he knew I shot you with an arrow.” She said wiping her eyes. He frowned looking away from her again “So what do I need to do to earn his trust?” Kagome smiled bleakly. “That's easy. You just have to prove yourself in battle.” Kenshin frowned down at the Sakabattou. “I thought so.” He said grimly.
Kagome stood up looking towards the trees “I feel the sacred jewel. It's coming at us really fast!” Kagome drew an arrow from her quiver. Kenshin narrowed his eyes his right hand poised to draw his reversed blade against whatever was coming. Whatever Inuyasha thought; He would protect Kagome. A whirl wind broke through the trees and stopped “Hey beautiful!” A deep male voice greeted. Kagome dropped her stance and relaxed her arrow. “Oh, hi Koga,” Kagome said casually sitting back down.
Kenshin frowned studying the man who had appeared from the whirl wind. `He isn't human either.' He figured spotting the furry tail. “You know this man, Miss Kagome?” Kenshin asked suspiciously watching his movements closely. Kagome shrugged “Yeah, he's a friend of mine this is Koga leader of the wolf demon tribe.” Koga frowned and looked around searching for a scent. “Where's the mutt? How typical of him to leave you alone and unprotected. He never could keep track of you like I can. That's why you're my woman.” He boasted. “Are you ready to leave him yet?” he asked turning to look at her. “Kagome you're pale and cold like death warmed over, did he put you in danger again?” Koga asked holding her hand.
He looked over at Kenshin suddenly realizing Kagome had not been alone. “Hey who's this guy? You're standing awfully close to my Kagome.” Koga pointed at Kenshin. Kenshin shifted his weight slightly prepared to fight if necessary. Kagome shook her head and rolled her eyes at the wolf demon. “I'm not your woman. This is Kenshin. He's a good friend of mine too, Koga.” Koga looked him over “Hmm, another pathetic human friend, Kagome?” Kagome put her hands on her hips crossly. “My human friends are not pathetic Koga…” she started. Kenshin narrowed his eyes dangerously. `Humans are pathetic are we?' Kenshin placed his hand on his sword hilt prepared for battoujutsu as Koga flexed his fist to fight.
“So you think, humans are pathetic, well if you haven't noticed, Kagome is a human.” Inuyasha interrupted as he jumped out of the trees. “So now that you're here wolf, let's settle the score.” Inuyasha said glaring at Kenshin in ridicule. Koga grinned. “That's fine with me mutt, I'll kill you and take Kagome with me. She'll never be cold and pale like that again. She's the only human who isn't pathetic, because I love her.” Koga said flexing his fists. Inuyasha growled and drew Tetsaigua.
“You talk to much wolf boy.”
Kenshin watched the blade transform into a fang. `That isn't a regular sword?' He thought in doubt. “This time wolf I won't hold back. How dare you assume that I always put her in danger?” Inuyasha snarled glaring at the wolf. Kagome walked over. “Inuyasha, stop this. There is no need to fight with Koga.” Kagome pleaded pulling on his sleeve. Inuyasha turned pushing her behind him. “No Kikyo, I won't stop. You are mine and no one else's!” he stated firmly.
Silence followed growing deeper. Koga looked confused. “Who's Kikyo?” he asked finally. Kenshin looked back at Kagome and he felt the hair on the back of his neck rise. Inuyasha winced in horror at the name. He turned slowly to face Kagome hearing the creak of her bow. She had backed away and drawn her arrow aiming it at Inuyasha's heart. Her hands trembled and her eyes were hidden by her hair; she glowed with the sacred aura as her arrow did. “K-Kikyo do you really want me dead? Why?” Inuyasha asked helplessly as he looked at her. His eyes, widened in hurt shock as he realized it was Kagome who faced him and not Kikyo. “Kagome what are you doing?” he asked carefully. Her hands lowered the weapon. Hot angry tears spilled from her eyes as she raised her head. “I can't take it any more! I won't be second to her!” She again raised the bow and drew the arrow. Franticly Inuyasha searched for something to say to calm her down. But the look in Kagome's eyes made his mind go blank in shock. She gritted her teeth and closed her eyes. “I can't!” she said as she fired her arrow nicking his cheek as it flew past his head with deadly accuracy. His eyes widened in shock as he touched the cut on his cheek. She threw down her bow and covered her face with her hands. “I'm not Kikyo!!!” she sobbed.
Kenshin walked over and stood beside her; he looked slowly from Kagome to Inuyasha in shock at what he had witnessed. He looked back at Kagome suddenly understanding what she had told him. No wonder she had been as deeply saddened as she had spoken of the priestess. Inuyasha must have been in love with Kikyo and from his behavior still was. But why did Kagome say she wasn't Kikyo? There had to be more to it then that. Inuyasha took a step towards her his hands trembling. “Kagome?” he asked reaching for her. “Don't touch me!” she said stepping back away from his hands. She looked up at him with an accusing gaze. Then like a frightened deer Kagome bolted running as fast as she could. Kenshin followed only a heartbeat behind. “Wait!” Kenshin called after her as she ran. Inuyasha stood silently where he was, grief holding him like stone watching her run from him. `Damn it. What's the matter with me?!' he thought angrily.
“Damn.” Koga said shaking his head in quiet alarm as he plucked the arrow from the tree. “I've done some stupid things in my life. But I've never hurt a woman like that. You really are stupid dog boy. Guess I won't need to kill you. Kagome won't be coming back to you again.” He said tossing the arrow at Inuyasha's feet. Inuyasha sheathed his sword and turned away. “Yeah, I know.” He said softly his ears drooping. `I drove her away. This time I don't think an apology will change anything. She's never ever pointed her arrow at me by choice, but this time…This time she was ready to kill me, without betrayal forcing her actions,' He bent down and picked up the arrow and looked at it. “But I guess I did betray her, I called her Kikyo. The one thing I swore to my self I'd never do.' He closed his eyes and touched the cut on his cheek again. “I'm so sorry... Kagome.”
Kenshin blinked as he ran keeping Kagome in sight. `I'm not completely sure what happened back there. I do know she shouldn't be alone.' Kenshin thought as he ran after her. Kagome ran past the camp where Sango stood up and called to her. Not looking back she ran in to the forest. Kenshin stayed close by, running just behind her. When she had exhausted her energy, she collapsed sobbing. Kenshin's quiet footsteps coming towards her forced her to her feet and she ran again. Tripping over fallen branches and stones Kagome struggled to her feet again and again. Kenshin followed keeping her in sight. Blinded by her tears Kagome let her feet take her. She knew the forest well and ran on. “Kagome, wait!” He called again as she ran towards an old well. Dread knotted his stomach as he sped up. Kagome hadn't slowed at all and she was running straight at the old well. As Kagome dove over the side, Kenshin reached out his hand. He caught her in mid air as they fell. Embracing her tightly he braced himself for the impact. Turning he prepared to jump back up when his feet touched the ground. Kenshin gasped as the ground vanished beneath his feet and a blue light enveloped them.
Kenshin looked around as the fell through the time slip. “What is this?” Kagome turned her head to look at him her eyes swollen with tears. “Why did you do that? Why did you jump in after me?” she asked. Kenshin frowned “I could ask you the same question. I feared you were trying to kill yourself.” He relaxed his arms around her but didn't let her go in case he needed to support her further. Kagome sighed “This old well is how I travel through time. How are you here with me? I didn't think anyone else but him and me could use it.” Kagome leaned against Kenshin for support as the ground became solid. “I'm home.” She whispered.
Kenshin looked down at her with apprehension. “We are five hundred years in the future?” he asked cautiously. Kagome sighed and wiped her eyes with her hand. “Kenshin, don't tell anyone where you are from, ok? Gramps would bore you to death with your own legend.” Kagome warned with a weak forced laugh. Kenshin grimaced nervously and then frowned. “What happened back there?” He asked seriously sitting down on the dirt floor of the well. Kagome sighed sadly and then angrily hit the wall with her small fist pulling it back and holding it in pain. “He only sees her! I'm not Kikyo! I'm not! I am Kagome! Why can't he see that? I hate how I look. I wish… I could disappear forever!” Kagome buried her face in her hands collapsing to her knees. “I hate him! I wish I'd never laid eyes on him. But, there is no way I can get the jewel with out him to protect me.”
Kenshin put his hand on Kagome's shoulder. With out any warning she threw herself in to his arms weeping. Kenshin was startled at first and then he relaxed supporting her as she wept, Kenshin felt drawn to her despite his decision to distance himself. It felt unusual and strangely right, that he was at peace with her in his arms. The feelings growing inside his heart shocked him and he would have pulled away except for the wall of the well would not allow it. With the angle she was in his arms he was completely pinned. “I'll protect you.” He said thinking aloud. Kagome raised her head and looked up at him with her deep brown eyes. Kagome looked up into his clear purple eyes and curved her lips into a slight smile. “You'll protect me, Kenshin?” she asked. Looking down into her eyes he felt his resolve quiver. She was too close to him. He could feel her warmth through his clothes and his heart began to pound. Her lips were only a few inches away and the sudden urge to kiss her startled and alarmed him. He swallowed nervously and forced himself to look away. “I will. I promise, Kagome.” He said hoping his voice wouldn't give him away. Kagome sat up wiped her eyes with the heel of her hand and combed fingers through her wild hair. Kenshin took a breath as his thoughts slowly came back to focus and he watched her silently. `What were those feelings I just felt? She must have just been too close to me; that must have been it. It has been a while since I've been that close to a woman, I'll just have to be more careful in the future.' He looked at her again `She looks so thin and pale. Come to think of it I never saw her eat anything much at the campsite. If I'm going to be her protector, it starts now.' He thought standing up and helping her to her feet. “You should take better care of yourself. When was the last time you had a good meal?” he asked.
Kagome looked up “Not for weeks. I just couldn't eat anything while he was near by. I haven't been home for two months.” She said softly. “I know I've lost a lot of weight. I probably look awful.” She hugged herself looking down at the ground. Kenshin put his hand on her shoulder. “No, you look hungry and tired and as your protector I am going to get you back to health.” He said firmly. Helping her out of the well he allowed himself to think. `I don't know what those feelings were but I can't let myself get distracted like that again. I'll have to be more careful.' He resolved again.
“Mom, I'm home. We have a guest.” Kagome called wearily as she slid open the door. Kagome's mom walked out of the kitchen. “Oh Inuyasha…” she said then looked up. “Oh I thought you were…Someone else.” She said with a warm smile. Kenshin bowed his head politely. “My name is Kenshin. I am pleased to meet you.” he said courteously. Kagome's mother smiled in welcome and bowed her head politely in return. “Welcome to our home Kenshin. We don't often have guests… like you. Will you be staying for dinner?” Kagome smiled tiredly. “Actually he'll be staying for a few days or longer.” She gave her mom a look and nodded her head the direction of the door. Her mom smiled in understanding her eyebrow rising slightly “Of course you are welcome to stay as long as you wish. Please make yourself at home.” Kenshin bowed his head in acceptance and gratitude “Thank you, Mrs. Higurashi I am grateful for your hospitality.” He said politely but with no other outward emotions. Kagome's mom looked at him silently nodded. “Why don't you sit down and rest you two. I'll get you some tea.” She said leading them in to the living room. Kenshin sat down and looked around his surroundings. Kagome smiled sadly. “I have to go outside for a couple minutes but I'll be back.” She said walking to the door. Kenshin stood again as well and walked outside with her.
Kagome made her way to the well house and slid open the door. Tears fell silently from her eyes. Kenshin stood in the doorway watching her curiously. Kagome wiped her tears with her fingertips then traced the old wood with her damp fingers. A pale blue light surrounded the well pulsing brightly. “Goodbye, Inuyasha. Be happy.” She whispered. Kenshin started forward as Kagome collapsed all her strength gone. Kenshin caught her before she hit the ground `What has she done?' he thought as he looked at the faintly glowing well. Kagome looked up at him halfheartedly. Kenshin looked at the well again.
Kagome shook her head weakly, “I'm…sorry. I …sealed the well so… no one can… cross back and forth until… I break the seal.” She said through sobs. Kenshin shook his head slowly in thought. “I understand your reasons. You are in pain though you have tried not to show it.” Kenshin looked at her sadly. “I think I can understand a little bit now. You love him but he only sees the woman who died. The one you told me about who was revived.” Kagome nodded and then frowned trying to stand, her knees wouldn't support her. Kenshin crouched down so that he could carry her. “I promised I'd protect you. I'll stay by your side until you are healthy again.” Kenshin said as he rose from the ground. “I'm sorry I'm so much trouble.” she said weakly. He shook his head as he walked back to the house. “You are no trouble to me. I am a swordsman and I keep my word. You'll need plenty of rest. You must regain your strength if you and I hope to make a stand for the jewel.” Kagome sighed “What good is the jewel if I lose myself?” she murmured softly to herself. Kenshin frowned thoughtfully and stopped. “I swore I'd protect you, even from yourself if I must. Do you understand?” Kagome smiled sadly against his back. “I won't kill myself, if that's what you mean. I'm too much of a coward.” Kenshin looked back at her seriously. “From my experience it takes more courage to live then to die. I live because I must atone for the lives I took.” She looked up at him with her deep brown eyes and something inside Kenshin softened just as it had before at the bottom of the well. He took a deep breath, “don't think about all of that right now. Just think about getting better.”
Kagome closed her eyes and fell into a deep exhausted sleep on Kenshin's back. Kenshin carried her into the house. He laid her gently on the floor. Kagome's mother walked in from the kitchen carrying a tray. “Kagome?” she gasped dropping the tray. The ceramic cups tumbled to the hard floor. Kagome's breathing was deep and steady. “She is sleeping that's all.” Kenshin explained. Kagome's mother sighed in relief. After having Kenshin carry Kagome up to her room she turned to him. “Please, tell me what happened.” She asked Kenshin, softly pulling a blanket over her daughter and leading Kenshin out of the room. In the hall she stopped. “I know you were there.” she said unmistakably. He sighed and pulled his arms up in to his sleeves. “Inuyasha called her by the name of Kikyo.” He replied quietly. Kagome's mother covered her mouth with her hand in shock. “Kagome has told me of the woman. She was Inuyasha's first love and was reincarnated in my daughter. I feared my Kagome had fallen in love with Inuyasha and has slowly been losing her will to live. I noticed that all of the mirrors in her room covered the last time she left. I've wondered lately if she couldn't stand to look at herself because she resembles this Kikyo.” Kenshin nodded in silent understanding. Kagome had spoken briefly of Kikyo's revival but she hadn't told him of her connection to her as her reincarnation. He could recognize now though that it must have been too painful to say aloud. `It makes sense then the way she acted towards Inuyasha and her sadness. Why didn't she just tell me though?' he wondered. Looking up at Mrs. Higurashi he gave her a small softening of his expression. “All she needs is to rest and eat but I'm sure she'll be fine. I'll stay with her.” Kenshin said evenly. Mrs. Higurashi hugged him briefly startling the young man, “Thank you Kenshin.”
Kenshin sat next to Kagome's bed watching over her as she slept. His worry for her had grown stronger as days and nights past with no sign of her waking, despite his resolve to distance himself. The many nights alone with her had given him time to think. Kagome was a very beautiful woman with a warm heart. Even so Kenshin had determined to remain as distant as he could with out seeming cold. He had vowed once before he wouldn't fall in love again. Yet watching her sleep bathed in the silvery moonlight made him nearly think twice about his vow.
Hesitantly in the dark he placed a hand on her forehead. “No fever, that's good.” He said softly. Kenshin slid his hand down her face and cupped her cheek. He felt drawn to her more and more despite everything. He cared about her only as her protector, didn't he? Carefully he pulled his hand away and sat back on the chair. Forcing his mind to focus on something other than the way Kagome looked in the moonlight was harder than he thought. He frowned at himself. “Am I so lonely that one beautiful woman would capture my heart so easily?” he asked himself silently. He couldn't answer his question. Kagome needed him, and inside the deepest part of his heart he needed her. Fate had flung them together and bound them just as surly as the jewel was bound to Kagome. There would be no reason to fight what fate had handed him. He would stay with her. But at a distance, he could not allow himself to fall in love with her. Could he? His feelings bothered him greatly just as her eyes haunted him. He stood up and silently made his way downstairs. `I'll make some tea. That will settle my thoughts. Although sake would be better.' he mused.
In the kitchen Kenshin found a kettle, filled it with water and after studying the strange square contraption with metal brackets on the top, lit the stove. “Interesting, the fire is controlled by the knob.” Kenshin said thoughtfully. He set the kettle on the stove and sat down to wait. “Are you still awake, Kenshin?” Mrs. Higurashi said as she quietly walked into the kitchen. “I couldn't sleep tonight so I thought I'd have some hot cocoa, would you like some?” she asked getting down a canister and a couple of mugs. “I see you already put a kettle on the stove.” She said with a warm smile. Kenshin closed his eyes and leaned his back on the back of the chair. Once more his thoughts came to the surface. Her face floated before his eyes. `Is it already too late? Have I already fallen in love with her despite my resolve not to?' he wondered. The kettle began to whistle and Mrs. Higurashi turned the knob. She handed a cup of steaming cocoa to Kenshin and sat down at the table.
“So why don't you tell me who you really are, Kenshin and also how you came to know my daughter…” she asked looking at him over the rim on her mug. Kenshin looked up at her expression. “I thought that you would ask that. The look you gave me when I came in said you knew I was from a different time.” He took a sip of the cocoa. “My full name is Kenshin Himura. I am a wandering swordsman.” He waited for her reaction. But he was taken aback at her calmness. “Himura the Battousai?” she asked gently. He nodded slowly taking a sip of the cocoa to cover his surprise. “I see. So the hero of legend does exist.” She said setting her mug down. “How old are you if I may ask?” she said looking over at him. He looked up at her. “I'm nearly nineteen. Why?” he asked beginning to feel uneasy. She smiled at him gently and knowingly. Kenshin felt nearly exposed to the soul by her look he took a swallow from his mug and hid his eyes. “Why are you here?” she asked. “Don't get me wrong, I'm grateful to you for being here with my daughter. I just was curious about your reasons. I am her mother after all.” She said with a soft chuckle.
Kenshin relaxed and looked up at her. `So I wasn't being interrogated after all, she was just worried about Kagome.' He thought taking another sip. “I was given a special task to watch over the sacred jewel. I had no idea that Kagome, was its' keeper though until I was sent back in time to the Warring states era, where I met her and her companions. I want you to know that I have sworn to protect Kagome. I will honor that vow to the fullest, Mrs. Higurashi.” Kenshin said quietly but firmly.
Kagome's mother nodded “Don't worry too much Kenshin. Kagome has a strong will. I'm sorry Inuyasha hurt her though she also has a hot temper. Maybe having you here will be just what she needs to heal.” Mrs. Higurashi said as she stood and smiled. He blinked and blushed into his cocoa. “Kenshin thank you for being here. Truly, you are welcome here in my home.” She said warmly. Kenshin looked up at her. “Thank you, I appreciate that. Oh and thank you for the cocoa it was very good.” He said with a small smile. Mrs. Higurashi nodded. “You're welcome, don't worry about the dishes I'll do them tomorrow just leave them on the table. Get some sleep if you can.” She said gently touching his shoulder as she walked by. Kenshin picked up the cups and rinsed them in the water and set them in the sink. He stifled a yawn. Making his way silently he walked back up stairs to Kagome's room. Quiet as a shadow he sat on the floor next to her bed. Leaning against it he fell asleep.
He stood in a wide meadow. A warm breeze blew softly stirring the grass and flowers. “Kenshin…” his name was whispered on the breeze. He looked around. Not far off he could see a figure walking towards him. “Kenshin…” it called to him softly the voice was warm and gentle. As the figure got closer he could see it was a woman. She walked slowly not disturbing any grass or flowers as she moved. “Kenshin…” she said softly her voice whispery and faint. She stopped before him. Kenshin looked at her. Her face was familiar some how.
“I am the priestess Midoriko. I created the sacred jewel with my last bit of strength.” She looked at him and smiled softly. “I summoned a champion a crossed time to save her. You are my chosen hero, Kenshin. You must save Kagome; Inuyasha has failed.” She looked at him sadly hearing his unspoken questions. “I hear your thoughts Kenshin and I can see your heart. You wish to know if Kagome is a reincarnation, don't you?” she asked. Kenshin nodded silently. “Kagome is indeed a reincarnation, but not just of Kikyo, she is also what is left of me.” Midoriko looked off in to the distance. “Kenshin the last battle is coming and Kagome will die unless you save her. That is her fate.” She said sadly.
Kenshin looked at Midoriko's expression and frowned. “What can I do, to save her? It's more than just protection she needs isn't it?” he asked swallowing the lump that had formed in his throat at the surety of Kagome's death. Midoriko looked at Kenshin with softened eyes. “She needs to be loved fully and completely. In her current state of mind the jewel will be tainted by her pain and sorrow and will consume her soul.” She said quietly. Kenshin shook his head denying the feelings inside himself. “I can't. I swore I'd never love again. Is there no other way?” He asked knowing the answer. Midoriko frowned at him. “Think on this, Kenshin. If the tainted jewel consumes Kagome's soul, its power will grow exponentially and the evil that seeks its' power will fling the entire universe in to chaos. Your time and the events of your entire life will change or be completely erased. The world you have glimpsed here will never be. Kagome has the power to alter time its self. Will you allow those you care about to suffer needlessly?” she demanded.
Kenshin swallowed again realizing the heavy burden on his shoulders for the first time. “As long as her soul is pure the jewel will remain dormant. If Kagome learns the depth of hate, all life could cease. Will you let that happen for the sake of your vow, is life so meaningless to you that you would throw everything aside, Kenshin?” Midoriko stated bluntly and bleakly. She shook her head as she looked at him her gaze softened “Your feelings for her were deep weren't they?” she asked. Kenshin looked up at her knowing gaze. She had said she could see his heart. Suddenly tears sprang to his eyes. “Kenshin, as long as you simply exist without truly living Tomoe can not be at peace. She wants you to be happy. You can not truly be happy the way you are now, but you know that. Just as you know that although you deny it you have already come to love again despite your vow...”
Kenshin awoke with a start. His heart was pounding. Had she spoken the truth? Was his vow, upsetting Tomoe? If so then…He looked at Kagome's face. He could deny he cared for her before he had fallen asleep, but now as he looked at her, he really did not want to. It had angered him to see her cry as Inuyasha called her Kikyo. The pain in her eyes as she'd looked up at him; had changed him. Even then he must have been falling for her. He smiled to himself for the first time in what seemed like ages. He felt lighter somehow. Still he was afraid. Losing Tomoe had nearly cost him everything. What did he have that he could give her, other than his heart? More importantly Kagome had been deeply hurt by Inuyasha before, would she even be open to being with him? Kagome sighed in her sleep and a crystalline tear slipped from her eyes. Kenshin frowned at the tear drop. Without his vow not to love, doubts and fears about himself began to surface inside his mind and heart. Closing his eyes he tried to go back to sleep but sleep would not come finally Kenshin silently left the room and went down stairs.
Walking outside in the pre light of dawn Kenshin stayed close to the shrine. “I do not wish to get lost in this Tokyo.” He told himself, wandering in to one of the storage rooms. Kenshin walked close to one of the shelves. Laying on a small wooden platform was a very familiar looking sword. Kenshin took a deep breath. “It's the Sakabattou.” He said picking up the weapon and drawing it from the sheath with expert care. He looked at it closer, “No, this is a different Sakabattou, it's better than mine its a principle forge.” He smiled ruefully “So I am remembered after all. Just as Kagome said.” Kenshin heaved a sigh placing the sword back on the platform. Turning he walked back out into the empty courtyard removing his kimono. Silent as a shadow he drew his blade from the sheath at his side and went through the katas his master had taught him as a young boy. When he finished the last one a fine sheen of sweat covered his bare chest and he was breathing heavily from the work out. Movement caught his eye and he turned. Kagome was watching him from her open window. She smiled and blushed as she realized she'd been noticed. Kenshin smiled back relived that she had awoken finally. His heart was only pounding from the workout wasn't it? Had it sped up when he'd seen her smile? He turned to pick up his kimono. `I really am falling for her.' He thought.
Later that morning Kagome opened her eyes and looked around the room. The chair by her bed was empty and Kagome felt disappointed she had hoped Kenshin would be there when she opened her eyes. A soft knock at the door made her jump a little. “Kagome, can I come in?” Kenshin called from the hall. “Sure.” Kagome said sitting up on her bed. Kenshin carried in a tray. “I made you some miso soup and some rice balls for breakfast. Try to eat as much as you can.” Kagome took the tray and balanced it on her lap. “You made this for me?” she asked taking a sip. “It's not very good I'm afraid. I only learned to cook a little from my master and not very well.” He said with a small laugh. Kagome looked at him. `I've never seen him smile before; he's cuter when he does though.' Kagome laughed and took another swallow. “This is the best I've tasted in a long time.” Kenshin looked startled. “Really? Wow.” Kagome nodded “Could I have some more, please? I'm starving.” Kenshin smiled. “That's good to hear. But you must be careful not to eat too much after not eating for a long time. So how about we go outside and get some fresh air after you finish…” Kagome held out the empty tray.
He blinked. `That was fast.' She smiled and looked at the tray. “All done.” She laughed. Kenshin brushed a piece of rice off her lip with his thumb. She was even more beautiful when she smiled. `I think my decision is made.' He thought silently. Kagome blushed under his gaze and he realized he was tracing her lips with his thumb. He let his hand drop. “You should stay in bed for a few more days while your strength recovers. I'll be here if you need me.” He said softly. She nodded and watched as he gathered the dishes and the tray. “You seem different, Kenshin.” She said suddenly looking at him. He looked at her “I feel different.” He said softly as he turned and left the room.
Kagome watched him leave and sighed quietly to her self. The dream she'd had the night before had made her happy. And she was now glad Kenshin hadn't been in the room when she'd awakened. She had dreamed of Kenshin. They had been at the bottom of the well like they had when Kagome had come back but things had been different. After she'd thrown herself into his arms he had kissed her. Kagome put her hand over her heart as it began to pound again. She shook her head. `I'm not a naïve little girl anymore, like I was three years ago. But still it might be nice to be kissed like that…'
Kenshin took a deep breath out in the hall. “What am I doing? That woman said not to change anything in the past, and here I have fallen in love with Kagome. But this is the future so maybe falling in love won't change anything except me. Lady Midoriko said that to save Kagome I had to love her. Could it be that I was sent back into time to change the future?” He mumbled to himself as he walked down the stairs. Down in the kitchen he washed the dishes and stacked them back in the cupboard. Once he was finished he unrolled his sleeves and sat down at the table and ate his own breakfast. Kagome would need a lot of rest to recover from the two months she hadn't slept or eaten very well. Now that she was out of danger Kenshin took another breath of relief.
Kagome's time had a lot of strange devices he'd never seen before. Kenshin wandered in to the living room and sat on the sofa. His hand hit a button on a black thing with lots of buttons and the black box sprang to life. At first Kenshin was alarmed but then he got curious. Walking over he touched it. “Hmm, it seems these are just images.” He said quietly to himself. He picked up the button covered thing and read a couple of the words above the buttons. “Channel up?” he wondered pushing it. The scene changed. Kenshin pushed the button again and blinked suddenly he was watching a red haired swords man in a heated battle. Kenshin watched in morbid fascination as the single swordsman took down a large group of enemies surrounding him and turned. Kenshin gasped and blinked. The man had a cross shaped scar on his left cheek. The man was supposed to be him! He looked at the men challenging the Kenshin on the box and realized they were the Shinsengumi he had battled the night of the Ikadia incident there was even a man who looked like Saito. Kenshin swallowed feeling sick at heart and pushed the top button labeled `power' and the box went black. He carefully set down the buttoned device and stood he needed air. After going outside for a few minutes he silently made his way back up stairs and sat beside the bed feeling dizzy and overwhelmed. He wanted to ask Kagome about what he had seen but she was sound asleep.
Several days went by and Kagome began to look healthier. Finally after he'd been watching over Kagome for nearly a month Kenshin told her that she was well enough to stay up. Kagome walked in to the kitchen with a smile and Kenshin looked up at her and nearly dropped his tea. “Kagome you look beautiful.” He said softly. Her waist length hair was braided back loosely and she wore a red tank top and a black knee length skirt. In her hand she held a pair of black sandals and a light sweater. “Since we'll be in my time for a while I thought we'd go shopping for some new clothes for you. If you'd like.” She said looking down at the floor blushing.
Kenshin stood up and walked over to her. “Are you feeling up to it?” he asked her softly with concern. Kagome nodded. “I feel fine. I guess all the rest did wonders. You watched over me the whole time, Kenshin. Thank you.” Kagome said looking at the floor she'd dreamed of him again and she couldn't quite meet his eyes this time. Kenshin put his hand behind his head as he blushed. “I promised I'd look after you, didn't I? It was no big deal.” He said. `Besides I was worried about you.' He thought as he looked at her, oddly she wouldn't meet his eyes today.
Since he'd come here to Kagome's time he and Kagome had become very good friends and so he had not spoken at all of his feelings, but Kagome hadn't pushed him away either. Kenshin sighed mentally and walked to the door. He hadn't really expected her to suddenly forget Inuyasha. But he had only begun to have feelings for Kagome a short time ago. Given time Kenshin hoped Kagome would come to see him as more than just her protector and friend. He turned and smiled. “Shall we go Kagome?” he asked holding out his hand. Kagome raised her head and smiled back her eyes meeting his. That one look changed Kenshin forever. Her smile was just as he thought it would be but he had not anticipated the gentleness in her eyes. The sadness that had been so deep before was replaced by pure joy. “Yeah, I can't wait to show you my world.” Kagome took his hand to steady her self as she put on her sandals, but let go as soon as they were on.
Kenshin slipped on his own sandals and tucked the reversed blade sword through the obi of his hakama. Kagome watched him silently. Her heart was hammering loudly in her chest again. Touching his hand had felt like what she imagined grabbing a live wire would feel like. She was tingling from head to toe. It wasn't an unpleasant feeling, not by any means, but Kagome felt a deep ache in her heart even as she felt the joy. Already she felt closer to Kenshin in a month than she'd ever felt to Inuyasha. But it felt wrong and right at the same time. Part of her was truly happy and at peace around Kenshin. But what about Inuyasha, was she betraying him somehow? Did she still love him? Deep in thought Kagome walked silently beside Kenshin. He watched her from the corner of his eye as they walked. Because of his training as a swordsman he noticed every shift in her expression and every sigh. He stopped and looked at her “Kagome is everything alright. You can tell me anything. As your friend I promise I'll listen and help you if I can.”
Kagome closed her eyes as a blush tinged her cheeks and she took a deep breath. “Kenshin I…” she began. He looked at her expression and took a deep breath whatever she was about to say would change things between them he was sure of that. Kagome turned her back so he couldn't see her face. “I feel like I am betraying him somehow by having feelings for you. I'm so confused. I like you a lot and I trust you.” She said softly as she looked up at the sacred tree. Kenshin smiled softly as relief washed over him. That hadn't been what he was expecting to hear. Kagome sighed “I want to forget everything back there. I want to be happy again. Before my fifteenth birthday I was a normal teenager. I want to be normal again.” She touched the small chunk of the pale pink jewel. “I can't be that way though. As the shikon jewels' protector, my destiny is just that; protect the jewel.” She said bitterly. She shook her head. “I don't want to go back there. I don't want to see him again. I'm sorry…but I won't ever unseal the well.” She said more to herself than to Kenshin. “As long as I have this part of the sacred jewel Naraku can't win. Inuyasha won't ever try to take the jewel from me again…” She froze. Kenshin walked over and looked at her silently as tears poured down her cheeks. “Miroku, will die and Kohaku. Sango will be alone in her grief and pain. I…have to go back. I have to end all of it. I can't ever be normal again can I?” she asked the silent tree. “I'm not going back to him. I won't ever go back to him.” Kagome said firmly.
Kenshin closed his eyes, `I have already gotten my feet wet in the river, I may as well jump in.' he thought as he then pulled her into his arms and held her. Kagome felt her self being pulled forward and she gasped softly. “Kenshin, what are you…?” she asked as his arms went around her holding her close to him; she closed her eyes as he spoke softly, “I'll stay by your side Kagome. I have nowhere else to go. We don't have to go back for a few days or even weeks even months if thats what you need. Take some time and get your strength back. Let your heartache heal. I'll help you... forget for awhile, if you'll let me.” Kenshin felt her warmth again as he had in the well and uncertainty rose inside him. With her in his arms he felt at peace but awkward. Her closeness was as soothing as it was unsettling. As he held her, desires he had so carefully restrained began to surface in his thoughts. She was too close again but he held on to her afraid to let go. He felt his heart begin to pound as she relaxed into his arms. Finally gathering all of his self control he pulled back to look at her. His hand trembled carefully wiping a tear from her cheek. Kagome looked at him silently in surprise and nodded slowly. “Okay.” She said softly. Kenshin smiled tenderly at her and let his arms drop from around her gaining his outward calmness again.
“We are going shopping aren't we?” he asked looking at her. Kagome nodded and pulled her purse back on her shoulder. “We'll take the bullet train.” She said looking at her watch and taking a deep breath. `What just happened? He held me in his arms like in my dreams. And the smile he just gave me…My heart is pounding. Does he…?' Kagome shook her head and looked at Kenshin. His bewildered expression made her pause for a moment as she tried to figure out what she had said. “On second thought we'll walk” she said with a laugh remembering finally he had no idea what a bullet train was.
Kagome and Kenshin walked for a long time looking at the different sights. Kenshin told her of the way things were in his time and a little about himself. Kagome shared things about herself and about her family. Kagome pointed at a tall building. “Let's try there.” She said leading him inside. Kenshin gaped this was nothing like the shops of his time. Kagome smiled and blushed as she handed him a pair of jeans and a nice button up shirt. “Try this.” She said pointing at the men's changing room. While Kagome was waiting she found a cute summer dress. It was a raspberry color trimmed in cream lace. It had no sleeves but tied around her neck like a halter top. `It's so cute. I deserve something new. A new dress, a new start and a new boyfriend' she thought as she purchased it. `Sure like that will happen… but why did he hold me like that?' she wondered as she sat down on one of the chairs out side the men's dressing room. Kenshin stuck his head out of the dressing room. “Kagome, I feel a little uncomfortable in these clothes.” He said. Kagome smiled “They're much different then what you are used to huh?” she asked looking at him. Kenshin frowned thoughtfully. “I can deal with the pants. But the shirt won't work. I look silly.” He said stepping out of the dressing room. Kagome grinned silently agreeing with him. “I'll go find something else then wait here a second.” She returned a couple minutes later with a dark blue green t-shirt. “Try this.” She said handing to him. A moment later he walked out of the dressing room. “You look really good.” Kagome said blushing. Kenshin smiled. “This will do, then?” he asked looking at her. Kagome nodded her mouth dry. `My heart is pounding again. I feel so nervous and restless around Kenshin all of the sudden. And when he held me I thought my heart would pound right out of my chest. What is going on with me?' She thought as she paid for the clothes he was wearing and three more t-shirts and two other pairs of jeans.
Kenshin stood close by her as they walked out of the store and back the way they'd come. She could feel the heat of his arm next to her. When he spoke suddenly, she jumped. “What kinds of things do you do for fun?” he asked quietly. Kagome shrugged, “I used to like to see movies with my friends, but I haven't in a long time.” Kenshin smiled. “Will you go with me instead?” he asked. She looked at her watch. “We can't today, it's too late and I'm a little tired, but how about tomorrow?” she asked. Kenshin nodded. “Okay, tomorrow then.” He glanced up at the sky. Heavy dark clouds hung low with impending precipitation. “Uh oh, looks like its going to rain.” Kenshin said looking around for some kind of shelter. Kagome groaned “I didn't even think to bring an umbrella.”
Kenshin grabbed her hand as the first rain drops fell. As he pulled her under the low branches of a tree it became a steady down pour. “It will probably rain most of the evening.” Kenshin said removing his kimono from the shopping bag where Kagome had folded it and his hakama while he had changed in the dressing room. Kagome shivered a little. “Who knew a summer storm could be this cold.” She muttered to herself. Her shiver had nothing to do with being cold. Kenshin hadn't let go of her hand right away after he'd pulled her under the tree. `What is going on here?' she wondered. `He seems to be going out of his way for me more than usual today. And the way he held me so tight, is he just being nicer than usual or is there more to it?' Kenshin sat down against the tree. “Come sit by me if you are cold, Kagome.” He offered. She looked over at him and walked over. He wrapped the thick kimono around them after Kagome had gotten settled. “That should keep you warm.” He said gently. Kagome rested her head on his shoulder. “Thank you Kenshin.” She said watching the rain fall.
Kenshin watched her silently. `Kagome, if you have feelings for me why am I so afraid to tell you how I feel? I want to, but I can't tell you my feelings. When I fight with a sword I am completely confident, why then am I so shy about this?' he mused silently. Kagome closed her eyes and clenched her fist nervously around the jewel at her neck. She wanted answers, after three years of uncertainty she was tired of silence, gathering her courage she took a deep breath “Why are you going out of your way to help me, Kenshin?” she asked quietly breaking his train of thought. Kenshin looked down into her deep brown eyes. “I'm your protector.” He said simply as his heart began to pound. “Is that the only reason?” she asked as a little hurt and disappointment reflected in her eyes. Kenshin looked at her and smiled as his heart hammered in his chest. “No.” he brushed the wet hair from her eyes so he could see them clearly. Once again the closeness of her unsettled him and made his self control quiver. The question had surprised him and scattered his thoughts. “Why then?” she asked her eyes searching his. He felt the feelings he had for her deeper than before but he was not usually as bold as he had acted around Kagome this morning and he hesitated shyly. As she searched his eyes with hers he suddenly felt as though he were drowning in the dark depths of her eyes. Breathing became almost difficult as his heart hammered almost painfully in his chest. “I care for you deeply.” He said finally a blush covering his cheeks. Kagome looked away timidly but unsatisfied with the answer. She squeezed the jewel tighter unconsciously drawing strength from it. “Do you love me, Kenshin?” she asked her voice little more than a whisper.
Kenshin hesitated for a moment caught off guard by simplicity and depth of her question. He had to answer her, but he was terrified all of the sudden. Answering her question would mean there would be no going back to being just a friend and if she didn't feel the same way... He took a deep breath and closed his eyes. For a moment he considered lying and saying “no” but she turned her eyes to him again and he could not utter the word that would hurt her. He swallowed and took a shaky breath “Yes.” He answered softly closing his eyes to shut out the look of disbelief he was certain was on her face. When he opened his eyes she smiled at him openly and then shyly as a soft blush tinged her cheeks.
Kagome leaned closer to him and he wrapped his arms around her. “Kenshin, you promised you stay with me didn't you?” she asked hesitantly. He hugged her gently and let his arms drop. “For as long as you need me Kagome.” He promised. Once again like in the well he was pinned. And her closeness unnerved him even more now that his feelings were known. She hadn't spoken of her own feelings though but he couldn't seem to summon up the courage to ask her like she had him. His heart continued to pound making it difficult to breath. He wanted to kiss her and to hold her but he wasn't certain how she would react. When he had hugged her that morning she had been willing but a kiss was far more personal. He closed his eyes trying to will his heart to stop pounding. To break the tension he stood up and leaned against the trunk of the tree. Closing his eyes he took several deep breaths. Opening his eyes he looked at her. Kagome was standing in front of him. Her hand was gripping the jewel around her neck so hard her knuckles were white. He felt some of his anxiety ease seeing that she was just as nervous. “I'm not a child anymore.” She said softly.
Kenshin looked at her slightly confused but before he could question her she boldly kissed him on the lips. He was startled at her actions, but as she kissed him softly he kissed her back. The tenseness inside him only building as new desires replaced the old ones. Pressed close to him as she was he could feel the warmth of their bodies where they touched. An aching desire rose inside of him stronger than anything he'd felt before as she molded to him. He put his arms around her pulling her closer. He was a man of honor and he held to that like a life line as she kissed him. He kissed her for only a moment longer and then nearly sighed as she pulled away and sat down again. She wouldn't meet his gaze and a bright blush covered her cheeks. `I can't believe I did that, but he kissed me back.' She thought as she closed her eyes.
Kenshin sat down and looked at the young woman next to him surly she could hear his heart pounding against his ribs. He smiled as she rested her head against his chest. Kenshin looked out at the rain. It had lightened some and he smiled softly to himself she had answered his unspoken question with the kiss they had shared. Her feelings had been clear and open to him. Although she hadn't spoken her feelings he knew she felt strongly about him. Even if it wasn't love yet it would grow. `I will cherish this moment forever.' He thought contentedly. Being close to her, made his heart happy and after so much pain he reveled in the sensation of peace he felt inside.
Back in the feudal era Inuyasha paced the ground in front of the well. It had been over four weeks since Kagome had left. That guy Kenshin had disappeared too his scent went in to the well with Kagome's and then vanished. “Damn it.” He muttered. `I really screwed up this time. How could I have hurt Kagome like that? She must have sealed the well so I can't even get to her time to apologize. Maybe she isn't ever coming back!' he thought as panic rose inside him. `I chased her away like the idiot I am. I wouldn't blame her though if she didn't come back.' he thought bitterly. “No, I need her to come back. I need her beside me. But now that I've realized it I can't even tell her. What can I do?” Inuyasha tapped his claws on the wood. Suddenly he had an idea and began carving deep into the wood with his claws. When he was finished he walked away. He had done all he could do. `Please let her find this. Please let her come back to me. I …I …love her.' Inside of his heart a new feeling grew even if Kagome didn't feel anything for him when she returned; He loved her that was all that mattered. Finally his heart was at peace.
Kenshin woke slowly feeling disoriented in the crimson light of sunset. On his lips he could still taste the sweetness of Kagome's kiss. He smiled Kagome was in his arms asleep. She stirred and looked up at him smiling. “Hi, Kenshin,” she greeted. Kenshin blushed. “Did you sleep well Kagome?” He said kissing her cheek. Kagome's eyes widened and she blushed hotly. “It's stopped raining?” Kagome asked trying to calm the flutters in her stomach.
Kenshin nodded. “I think we should head back to your house Kagome. If we stay here much longer we will probably get all wet despite the shelter from the tree. It looks like there may be some flooding.” He said looking out at the steady stream of water flowing along the ground. A bird flew in to the branches above them and a stream of water poured down, soaking them both in cold rain water. Kenshin wiped his eyes and laughed. “Now we really can't stay here. Can you think of someplace we can go to dry out? Your home is quite a distance to walk being all wet.” Kagome wiped her eyes and looked around. “My high school is that way. It's the beginning of summer break but the school is open.” Kenshin frowned thoughtfully. “that might work but how about this” He said pulling the scroll from the pocket of his kimono. “Do you want me to take us to the hot spring, back there? I can picture it clearly. Then I can get a fire going to dry our clothes.” Kagome sighed softly and looked at the odd scroll. “I guess we'll have to, besides He won't be there anymore.” She said squeezing water from her hair. “Hold on to me.” Kenshin said holding her close. Kagome held on to him and to the bags she had been carrying. The scroll pulsed and the tree faded. Kagome could smell the change in the air. Kenshin let go of her reluctantly.
Kagome looked at him thoughtfully as he walked over and began looking for a place for a fire. “You really do love me, don't you?” she asked sitting down. Kenshin gazed at her “Do I need to prove it?” He asked looking at her expression sadly. “I guess I do.” He said kneeling in front of her. Without hesitation he kissed her. Just like before Kenshin's lips were gentle and the kiss was tender. Kagome closed her eyes and let go of her own hesitation kissing him back. Inside of her a new sensation grew. She ached for something she couldn't name. Kenshin loved her, but there was a depth in her that had never been touched before. That was where the ache came from. Without warning a hunger unlike anything she had ever felt before burst inside of her and was reflected in the depth of the kiss. Kenshin matched her breath for breath as the passion of their kiss began to consume all reason. Kenshin felt his resolve quiver under the intensity of the kiss and struggled to maintain some self control.
She felt like she was floating but she could feel Kenshin all around her. She could feel the warmth of his hand on her bare shoulder. She opened her eyes as he cupped her breast with his other hand. “Kenshin?” she asked softly. He looked at her tenderly with understanding reflected in his eyes. “I'll stop if you want me to.” He said quietly moving his hand a blush on his own cheeks for allowing himself to touch her in such a way. Kagome looked at him blushing and closed her eyes. “It's all too soon,” She whispered shaking her head. When had she become so wanton? Kenshin smiled and kissed her softly on the fore head. “Forgive me, Kagome.” He said taking a deep breath.
Kagome opened her eyes as he put his arms around her and held her close. Why should she forgive him? It was her fault wasn't it? She had been the one who had increased the depth of the kiss. She had been the one who had opened her mouth to him. He was a samurai, and young man. Even she was not naive enough not to know that if a girl pressed her self against him that even the strongest man's resolve would crumble. The intimacy of lovers was a mystery to her. She'd never been touched or even kissed like Kenshin just had. Kagome was confused. She was glad things had stopped wasn't she? Part of her felt unsatisfied and she closed her eyes leaning in to Kenshin's embrace.
Inuyasha sulked on the top of Keade's hut. It had been days since he'd left the message in the well. Kagome still hadn't come back. The soft morning wind blew a soft scent to him. “That's Kagomes' scent.” Inuyasha jumped down and ran. “If she came back maybe she'll forgive me. Maybe she'll give me another chance.” He followed the scent into the woods. He was confused though as he followed it. Kagome's scent was usually soft and floral this scent was floral but primal. He slowed. Her scent was mingled with that of that Kenshin guy. Inuyasha felt his heart wrench. Kagome wouldn't would she? He'd chased her away; that he knew, but in to the arms of another man? If he had, he would accept it. Kagome was too precious to him to drive her away again. Jealousy sprang up inside him but he tamped it down. Kagome's happiness was most important. The many weeks without her had shown him that. He loved her. If she was happier in Kenshin's arms he would be crushed but he would still love her. As he came closer to the hot spring he closed his eyes. From the trees he could see Kagome in Kenshin's arms. “I love you, Kagome.” He heard Kenshin murmur softly. Kagome smiled at Kenshin. Inuyasha felt his world shatter but he tried to smile as he heard Kagome whisper, “I love you, too Kenshin.” Inuyasha closed his eyes forcing him self to accept it. “Kagome is happy.” He swallowed the lump that had formed in his throat and turned running back the way he came.
Kenshin hesitantly let his arms drop and stood. “Why don't you go ahead and get in the hot spring and warm up? I'll get a fire going and dry your clothes.” He said as he looked around again for an appropriate place for the fire. Kagome stood up and walked over to the edge of the spring. Slowly she peeled off her sodden tank top and wrung it out of the excess rain water. Kenshin turned to ask Kagome a question and froze the words dying on his lips. Kagome was kneeling beside the hot water wearing her black skirt and some lacy white under thing that was see-through. His face heated with a blush. Holding tightly to his honor like a life line he turned his back and pulled the soaked t-shirt over his head. He felt her eyes on his bare back and turned. She was standing silently watching him. “Kagome what is it?” he asked.
Kagome looked at him unmistakably and walked closer. Her hand came up and Kenshin closed his eyes as she traced the muscular lines of his bare arms. He trembled under her hands' exploration. He sighed and she stopped. He opened his eyes and smiled. “Go ahead.” He invited breathlessly the passion of the kiss before still burning inside him. Kagome leaned forward and traced the lines of his chest. Her hand slid down his side to the waist of his jeans. He caught her hand gently in his. Tenderly he lifted her hand to his lips and kissed her palm. Kagome's eyes fluttered closed as he kissed each of her fingertips one by one. Suddenly Kenshin put his arm around her waist pulling her decisively but tenderly to him all thoughts of holding back vanishing as her skin touched his. He wanted her and his need pounded in his veins like a wild fire. He seized her lips in an impassioned kiss. She moaned under the heat of his mouth as he left her lips and kissed down her neck; his mouth igniting fires under her skin until she trembled against him. “Kagome, if I don't stop…” he said taking a ragged breath as he mentally tried to control the passion raging inside him his resolve strained to its limits. Her soft skin under his hand was hot. Kagome opened her eyes and looked at him; her eyes were dark and deep with her own passion. Lost in the heat of the moment right or wrong meant nothing. Her thoughts were a jumbled blur leaving only her desire in control. “Don't stop.” She whispered. Kenshin's resolve shattered. Holding Kagome to him his mouth on hers in another impassioned kiss they tumbled to the soft mossy ground. Past the point of no return, all thoughts or reason they were swept away.
In the quiet that followed; their heavy breathing was the only sound besides the pounding of their hearts. Kenshin looked down at Kagome lying on the soft mossy ground her hair was fanned out around her like an ebony pool of silk. His red hair had come loose from the nape of his neck and hung over his shoulder the tips softly brushing her soft pale skin. She looked up in to his eyes and smiled. “Kenshin,” she whispered. He kissed her in return and rolled over on to his back. Slowly he got up and checked the fire. He pulled his hakama out of the bag and laid them on the rocks. “Would you like to join me, Kagome?” he asked softly. Kagome smiled and took his hand. He led her down into the hot spring and to a natural rock ledge where she could sit down. Kenshin sat beside her. “Kagome, do you regret it? Being with me like that, I mean?” Kagome smiled and shook her head. “Do you?” she asked. Kenshin shook his head. He'd taken her innocence. True it had been freely given but “It was never my intention to dishonor you in any way.” He said quietly the depth of what he'd done sinking in. Kagome leaned her head against his bare chest. “My world is a lot different than where you came from; if I had wanted you to stop I would have said so. You haven't dishonored me at all.” She said softly. He raised his hand out of the water and stroked her cheek. “I promise you I will be at your side.” He said as he kissed her.
Kagome woke up and looked around she lay in her own bed. `Was it only a dream?' she wondered feeling oddly disappointed. She moved and the arms around her tightened, Kenshin was beside her. She smiled and turned over kissing him softly. Kenshin opened his eyes and looked at her. “You brought us back?” she asked snuggling closer to him. Kenshin smiled gently. “Yes, after you fell asleep in my arms, I must have really worn you out. You didn't even stir when I laid you on your bed and covered you with a blanket. By the way your mother stuck her head in to see if we had gotten back last night. She said that she had gotten a little worried but when she couldn't find me either she figured we were together.” Kagome blushed. “She saw us like this?” she asked nervously realizing Kenshin wasn't wearing a shirt. And she was nude. Kenshin chuckled softly. “No. I was sitting on the floor by your bed where I slept while I was watching over you, till just a little while ago. I didn't sleep much there and I missed holding you so I asked if I could lie beside you and you slid over.”
Kagome smiled vaguely remembering doing something like that. “Hey Kenshin, do you still want to go see a movie, today?” he smiled at her warmly a sparkle of mischief in his eyes that Kagome had never seen before. “Your Mom said she was going to be out till this evening. Souta came in to say bye and that he hoped you would feel better and that your Grandfather had gone to visit a friend.” Kagome blushed under his heated gaze. “So no one is home?” she asked snuggling closer.
Kenshin looked down at her and relaxed closing his eyes. The warmth of her body next to his was soothing and he began to drift nearing sleep when he felt Kagome's body shift and felt her breath on his neck. He opened his eyes and looked up at her. She'd straddled him. The view was stunning. Her raven hair spilled around her shoulders and it's silken strands brushed his skin. Her bare skin was flushed and heated under his gaze. His eyes closed as he felt her lips on the sensitive skin of his neck as she placed slow kisses on his neck and shoulder. His skin tingled where her breasts pressed against him. Seeing where things were headed Kenshin pulled her to him kissing her with an impassioned intensity.
Kagome leaned back in the bath tub. Kenshin had gone downstairs to fix them some lunch after bringing them back. Her face heated with a blush as she remembered what had happened that morning. “I never dreamed I could be so... passionate and forward.” Kagome said ducking her head under the water as images went through her mind. Standing up she tilted her head to the side and began washing her hair. Kenshin watched her from the door way transfixed by the motion of her fingers. She was a tempest that had torn his walls down and shattered his seemingly endless void, even so he still felt at peace inside.
Kagome stopped and looked over her shoulder. “Are you watching me?” she asked mischievously. Kenshin blushed. “Just your fingers I promise.” Kagome sank in the water to rinse her hair. “Lunch is ready downstairs.” Kenshin said looking away with a blush. `Even though we have been together intimately he still shows me respect and courtesy. He's even still sort of shy around me.' Kagome thought as she grabbed a towel and wrapped it around her slim figure. “Kenshin, I was just thinking I'd still like to go see a movie. Want to go with me?” Kenshin looked at her contemplatively. After a moment he walked over and kissed her with enough passion that Kagome swayed as he pulled back. He held her as she leaned against him for support. “You better get dressed or I don't think we'll make it out of the house let alone to a movie.” He said his own breathing heavy.
Kenshin leaned against the wall next to Kagome's door as she got dressed. He had a lot on his mind. Mainly one thought stood out. What would happen at the last battle? Kagome's heart was at peace so the danger of tainting the jewel had passed. But after the battle was over would he be allowed to stay with Kagome a little longer? What would happen when Inuyasha found out about them? Kenshin shook his head. Inuyasha was a hot blooded fighter like himself only worse because Inuyasha had taken no vow not to kill. Inevitably there would be a fight when he found out. Kenshin shuddered.
Since walking away from the battle field he had avoided fighting like a plague. What would happen if he drew his sword in actual combat? Would the Battousai return? Kagome opened the door and walked out. What ever thoughts had been plaguing Kenshin vanished with his next heartbeat. Kagome wore a raspberry colored summer dress. That was sleeveless and tied behind her neck. The back was low cut and hugged her curves snuggly. Her hair had been pulled into a messy bun secured with decorated chopsticks “What do you think? I bought it while I waited for you at the store.” She said turning for him to see it. Kenshin was speechless so he smiled warmly in approval. Kagome blushed under his intense gaze. “Should we go?” Kenshin reached out and took her hand.
At the movie theater Kagome frowned. “All that is playing are Samurai movies. There isn't one good one out.” Kagome froze looking at one of the titles. `“Samurai X” that one is about Kenshin. Somehow I don't think he'd like watching his life before he lived it. I've seen it twice already and I have tons of questions but…' Kagome sighed turning to Kenshin. “I'm sorry Kenshin; it looks like they are all the same.” She said hoping he had not seen the Samurai X poster. However Kenshin was staring straight at the Samurai X poster, his normally calm expression showing his alarm clearly. “Is that me?” he asked in shock. “Uh, yeah it is.” Kagome answered softly. Kenshin went a little pale. “I don't think I'd like to see a movie today after all.” He said quietly remembering the brief scene he'd glimpsed on the television. The words on the poster seemed burned in his mind; “Based on the journal of Kaoru Himura” He reached for Kagome's hand. She smiled with concern. “Let's go get ice cream instead.” She suggested leading him down the street.
Kenshin stopped, “Kagome, who is Kaoru Himura?” Kagome paled and looked away. Answering his question would make things too real but she could not ignore it either. “Kaoru Himura was your wife.” She whispered quietly. Kenshin looked at her silently. He pulled Kagome into his arms. “Kagome, never mind I don't want to know. I love you and right now that's all that matters. Let's just forget about the past for awhile.” Kagome nodded silently feeling a wave of guilt wash over her. `Inuyasha still doesn't know about Kenshin and I.' she thought silently.
Later that night Kagome lay awake staring up at her ceiling unable to sleep, thoughts kept running through her mind. Kenshin had been really quiet after they had left the ice cream shop. His face had been blank; his eyes distant just as he had been when she'd first met him. Kagome felt like weeping. She had known Kenshin had married but now he knew and she was sure he felt like his love for her was a betrayal of a woman he had yet to meet. Suddenly Kagome felt very alone. In the dark she looked around the room. Kenshin had gone to sleep next to her but he was gone now. She felt tears sting her eyes as she began to cry. Silently Kagome got up and pulled on her bath robe. As quietly as she could Kagome made her way to the well house. In the pale moonlight Kagome looked down at the well she blinked. “What's that?” she wondered as she walked down the steps. Kagome looked down at the wooden ledge. Hesitantly she traced the words carved there. “I'm sorry Kagome. Please come back. I miss you. I understand now.” Kagome felt tears well up inside of her as she read the words again. All at once Kenshin was there his arms around her. Kagome turned into his embrace. “Kagome, I'm sorry. I don't care what my future is.” He kissed her. Kagome kissed him back hesitantly. Kenshin smiled at her lovingly. “That future has only been written here in your time. I am not the same man anymore. Meeting you changed me.” Kenshin said softly.
