Chapter 3

Weeks passed and the summer began fade. Kenshin and Kagome were inseparable. Kagome had gotten her health back completely and they could scarcely keep their hands to themselves. So they frequently went back to the hot spring as so not to be noticed at night.

One morning Kagome woke up earlier than she usually did. Rolling over, Kenshin didn't stir. `He must be exhausted' Kagome thought carefully rolling out of bed. Kenshin was always the first to awake each morning so that he was not in bed with her when her mother looked in and Kagome had gotten used to it. As she sat on the edge of the bed to stretch, Kenshin grabbed her.

Kagome laughed softly in surprise. “Hey, you were supposed to be a sleep.” Kagome said as Kenshin put his arms securely around her and pulled her back to is side. Kenshin smiled. “I've been awake for awhile. I love to watch you sleep.” Kagome shook her head in mock exasperation. “I was going to make you breakfast. Since you've never had my cooking, but if I can't get up…”

Kenshin smiled and let her go with a yawn. Kagome looked at him. “Kenshin why don't you try to get some more sleep, I'll come and wake you when breakfast is ready okay?” Kenshin yawned again and nodded. “I can't imagine why you haven't been sleeping.” Kagome said with a wink. Kenshin laughed. “I can't either.” He said lightheartedly laying back on Kagome's pillow his unbound red hair spilling a crossed the white pillow case. Kagome smiled to her self as she got dressed and slipped out of the room.

When Kagome went to wake Kenshin for breakfast he was in a deep sleep and Kagome decided not to wake him. Instead she went back down stairs to the kitchen and began making lunches. She made rice balls and some of Kenshin's favorite items. Kagome had a feeling today was going to be special somehow. While Kagome was stir frying some vegetables Her Mother walked in. “Kagome, this looks delicious are you two going on a picnic?”

Kagome smiled. “I thought about it, but Kenshin is still asleep.” Kagome sighed. Her mother looked at her seriously. “Kagome I know that you and Kenshin have become lovers I checked in on you three days ago and the two of you were sound asleep together in your bed and he was shirtless. Needless to say I wasn't surprised. Kenshin is a hot blooded Samurai and you are a beautiful young woman in love. I love you and I'm glad you are happy. Just don't let your Grandfather find out about it. He'd make Kenshin take the vows at sword point.” She said gently hugging Kagome to emphasize her words.

“Does Inuyasha know about this?” she asked softly. Kagome stopped and sighed “Yeah, he was actually okay with it.” Kagome lied stirring the vegetables in the wok.

Her mother sighed in relief. “I came to tell you that Souta, Grandpa and I will be going on a vacation to China. I know you have to get back to the feudal era so I didn't know if you would be coming with us and I doubted you would leave your Samurai for that long. I won a trip at the grocery store and we will be gone for two weeks.”

Kagome smiled brightly. “That's wonderful you haven't been on a real vacation for a long time. Have lots of fun! When do you leave?” Her mother smiled. “We leave Friday. When are you going back?” Her mother asked. Kagome tapped her chin with her finger. “Probably, Saturday morning so that I have time to shop for all the supplies before we go. I most likely won't be back for several weeks or even a month. But I'll be fine. I have Kenshin and Inuyasha watching over me.” Kagome said tossing the vegetable with some rice noodles. Her mother smiled gently. “I know, but I can't help but worry. Is there anything you need from the store?” she asked raising her eyebrow.

Kenshin opened his eyes slowly looking at the ceiling. He could tell by the sunlight pouring through the window that it was afternoon. “I must have been really tired.” He muttered as he changed out of his jeans and pulled a clean t-shirt over his head. He inhaled. `Something smells really good. Is that Kagome's cooking?' he wondered walking down the stairs.

“Hey, you finally woke up.” Souta said cheerfully, putting his video game on pause. Kenshin laughed cheerfully “I guess I haven't been sleeping very well. Is Kagome in the kitchen?” he asked. Souta frowned. “Yeah and she slapped my hand with the chopsticks when I tried to taste some of her fried noodles. Sis is a really good cook but when she cooking for someone else you better not get in her way. ” He said rubbing his hand. “How do you put up with her?” he asked seriously looking at Kenshin.

He shrugged. “I love her. And I've learned to be quick.” He said with a playful wink. Souta laughed. “I'd love to see you try to get away with it. Sis will slap your hands too.” Kenshin smiled confidently. “No she won't.” he said as he walked toward the kitchen Souta followed.

Kagome was chopping something humming cheerfully as he walked in. Her back was to him and he sat down. He waited till the knife stopped before he spoke. “I missed breakfast didn't I?” Kenshin asked looking over the table. Kagome laughed. “Yes, so I made a big lunch instead.”

Souta snuck behind Kagome with a pair of chopsticks. Kenshin's eyes wandered over the lunch box and the fried noodles as he pretended not to notice. “You made all of this?” he asked.

Kagome nodded slapping Souta's hand with the chopsticks in her hand. “I borrowed a book from the library and cooked some of the things you said were your favorites. I thought we'd go on a picnic.” Kagome said turning to her little brother. “I made a lunch for you, it's in the refrigerator. Enjoy. By the way how's your new video game?”

Souta grinned “The Hiten Mitsurugi attacks are kind of difficult but over all it's like the movie. Hey come to think of it Kenshin looks a lot like the character in the game and in the movie. ” Kagome swallowed she had forgotten that Souta's new video game was about Kenshin. She laughed “I think the video games are making you lose sense of reality.” Kagome started. Souta walked over to Kenshin. “What's your last name?” Kenshin frowned and took a breath.

Kagome shook her head making an 'x' with her arms and Kenshin shrugged. “Himura.” He said. Souta's reaction was instantaneous. “You are him! That's so awesome! Mr. Himura did you know you are my biggest hero?” he said blushing as he ran out of the room. Kagome shook her head turning back to the stove. “Now you've done it, of all of the stories Gramps told Souta he has always loved those about you. You've been his hero since he was little.”

Kenshin smiled awkwardly at Kagome changing the subject. “It looks wonderful but who's going to eat all of this? I'm feeling pretty hungry but I couldn't possibly eat this much.” Kagome untied the cloth holding back her hair. “I know of a beautiful grassy meadow, close to Keade's village. I made enough for everyone. Kenshin I think there is some one who deserves to know about us. Remember the other night when you found me in the well house? Inuyasha left me a note of sorts. He told me he was sorry for our fight. It made me feel a little guilty, that I am here with you in this era and he's worried sick.” She said packing it all carefully in to a large bag.

Kenshin looked at her silently and then drew her in to his arms kissing her soundly. `I hope I don't have to fight him then for your sake, Kagome.' he thought. Kagome sighed and leaned closer. “Don't worry Kenshin, I'm with you now and I'm happy.” she said with a smile. Kenshin sighed, had it been so obvious he'd been worried? Opening the refrigerator she pulled out several cans. “Here are some drinks.” She said packing them and turning she picked up a bag that was knotted. “Let's go. I'm hungry.” Kagome said beginning to lift the heavy pack.

Kenshin took it from her and shook his head. “Let me carry it for you.” he offered gently. Outside Kenshin looked at Kagome. She smiled and led the way to the well house. `I can't keep it sealed forever.' she thought.

Sliding the doors open Kagome paused at the steps. “Kenshin wait here, okay.” She said walking towards the well. Walking to the wall she removed a bow and from a quiver an arrow. “I hope this will work.” Kagome said climbing up on the edge of the well. Aiming her arrow in to the darkness of the well Kagome closed her eyes. Kenshin watched her silently. She began to glow. Faintly at first then brighter until she was radiating soft blue light that filled the room with its warmth. “GO!” she shouted as she released her arrow. Everything happened in slow motion it seemed. The arrow left the bow like a blaze of light. Flashing and sparking it touched the seal. The well trembled and blue light burst from inside it. Kagome fell forward into the light and vanished from sight. Kenshin followed only a heartbeat behind her.

Kagome fell through the time slip enveloped in the light. Kenshin reached out his hand and caught her wrist. “Kagome, are you alright?” She laughed. “I guess I didn't need to use that much power in my arrow.” Kenshin shook his head and sighed. “I think you took years off my life.” He said touching her cheek. Kagome blushed. “Sorry.” Kenshin smiled. “This bag is heavy. I was surprised I could move very fast with it.” Kenshin said shifting the pack on his back.

At the well Inuyasha was waiting as he had for the last three months. When Kagome's arrow broke through the time slip the sheer power of it had flung him backwards and he had landed hard, face first in the dirt. As Kagome climbed out of the well Inuyasha stalked over angrily. “Damn it Kagome, can't you make a quieter entrance?” he grumbled brushing the dirt off of his clothes.

Kagome stood up her temper flaring. “Well excuse me! I made a miscalculation and my arrow was too powerful.” She snapped expecting the argument to continue. Inuyasha sighed shaking his head. “It's good to see you haven't changed too much with Kenshin.” He said with a smile. “I know you chose to be with him, Kagome. I don't care about that. I just need you to be with me, even if you are just my friend.” Inuyasha said walking toward her. He grabbed her shoulders and hugged her. “I can't even feel anything without you. I'm so sorry Kagome!” he cried. Kagome closed her eyes. “You aren't angry about Kenshin?” Inuyasha looked down at her. “If you are happy that's what matters.” He said holding her closely. “ I swear to you Kagome, I'll be by your side no matter what.” Inuyasha said hugging her again.

Kenshin jumped out of the well. “It's good to know that Kagome has a friend.” he said with a tight frown Inuyasha still held Kagome. Casually Kenshin wrapped his arm around Kagome's waist.

Inuyasha took the bag from Kenshin trying to ignore the glare and the chill in his voice as he'd spoken and sighed, turning to Kagome. “I'm just glad you didn't sit me. Although for once I think I would have deserved it.” Kagome shook her head. “I considered it, but you are carrying lunch now.” Kagome teased walking over and playfully slugging his arm Kenshin blinked forcing down his jealousy. “Are you two always like this?” he asked. Kagome opened her mouth to answer. “No sometimes it's much worse.” Miroku said casually. “If you travel with us you'll see.” Sango laughed lightly. Kenshin laughed but with little humor. “I guess I will then.” he stated walking up and taking Kagome's hand.

The group walked to the grassy meadow Kagome had described and sat down Kagome and Sango laid out lunch while the men talked a little away from them. Kagome grinned as she poured hot water from a thermos in to a bowl of Ramen for Inuyasha; having learned that it was better to just have it ready after or with every meal. Sango looked at Kagome. “You seem... different.” Kagome smiled and looked at Kenshin fondly. “I fell in love, Sango. Look at him isn't he wonderful?” she sighed dreamily.

Sango sat back, “who with?” she asked following her friends gaze. “With Kenshin?” she asked. Kagome nodded “I never thought I could be so happy!” Kenshin was watching Kagome with a smile on his face. Inuyasha leaned closer to the monk. “It always gives me the creeps when the girls talk.” He muttered to Kenshin and Miroku. “Indeed when women unite men usually suffer.” Miroku laughed. Sango's glare silenced him. “I mean it's good to see the two of them talking again. I'll go see if they need any help.” He said standing up. Kenshin and Inuyasha followed.

They laughed and joked together as they ate the meal Kagome had prepared. Even Inuyasha complimented her cooking skills. He was especially happy about the Raman. Kenshin unconsciously moved closer to Kagome bothered by the looks the half demon was giving his lover. Kagome turned and smiled brightly at Kenshin holding out a piece of chicken in her chopsticks. “ahh.” she coaxed. Kenshin blushed but took the offered bit. Suddenly mid laugh her face went still and she stood up. Inuyasha stood up as well. “Damn I hate the smell of wolves, especially during lunch.” He grumbled. Kenshin stood calmly along with the rest of the group although the presence was clearly angry and ready to kill.

Koga burst out of the whirl wind with a frown. His eyes were cold as he looked over the group. Without a word he walked over and grabbed Kagome's arm pulling her with him a few steps. “Who touched you?” he asked quietly. Kagome blinked “What?” Koga glared at the two human men Kenshin glared back watching every move the wolf made. “Which one of them touched you, Kagome?” he asked again. She paled. “I don't know what you mean.” She said quietly. She was afraid. His eyes were cold and dark and dangerous. “Who the hell mated with you? I'll kill him. Damn it! The only pups you're supposed to carry are mine!” he yelled shaking with fury.

Inuyasha's eyes widened in shock as Kagome's change of scent made sense. “Koga, Its none of your damn business. Whether I decided to mate with Kagome or not to that's just between her and me and no body else. Why don't you leave skinny wolf you aren't wanted here.” Inuyasha said walking towards him. Kenshin's face hadn't changed. His appearance was calm on the surface but inside he seethed with anger at Kagome's humiliation and at the words Inuyasha had spoken. He was Kagome's lover. He was not about to hand her over to either of them. Jealousy raged and burned white hot as Inuyasha looked at Kagome.

Inuyasha ginned in contempt at the wolf. “Too bad wolf Kagome is mine, now.” Koga punched Inuyasha in the face suddenly sending him flying. “You are a damn liar. It's a human pup, dog boy.” He said turning his attention back. Kenshin narrowed his eyes as he watched Koga rounding on Kagome. Kenshin sprung moving towards the wolf. “Tell me now, damn it!” he demanded. Spots of color danced in Kagome's eyes and she was flung backwards from Koga as he back handed her a crossed the face. The force of the blow tossed Kagome back several feet and into Kenshin's arms as he caught her before she hit the ground.

“Kagome, are you alright? Kagome?” Kenshin asked there was no reply from her unconscious figure. Kenshin laid her gently on the grass and stood his eyes blazing with fury. Inside him the Hitokiri he had been, began to break free. He closed his eyes for a moment to clear his thoughts. “You will not lay a finger on Kagome again I won't allow it!” He said standing with his hand on his sword hilt. His eyes were narrowed and dangerously cold. “I will not allow My lover to be treated like that again, by anyone.” He said the sword clicking as he loosened the blade in the sheath.

“If you wish a fight, I will gladly be your opponent. But you will not walk away from this.” Inuyasha stood up shaking in fury he spat a mouthful of blood on the ground. “Kenshin,” he cautioned “he is a wolf demon. You have no chance. Let me take him on, I'll rip him to shreds” He said having never seen Kenshin fight and cracking his knuckles. Kenshin turned his eyes. He had no fear. He caught Inuyasha's eye and gave him a single look. Inuyasha lowered his fist. He understood this was now Kenshin's fight and win or lose he could not interfere. Something in Kenshin's look told him that he wouldn't have to worry about him losing. There was something inhuman inside Kenshin; Inuyasha could feel it as he looked at Kenshin's expression.

Koga glared confidently at Kenshin. “It's your funeral Human. After you're dead I'll kill the mutt and Kagome will be mine.” He said laughing. Kenshin met his glare with a dangerous glitter in his cold lavender eyes . “Shut up.” He said coldly drawing his blade. Koga smirked “You think you can use a sword against me? You are even stupider than I thought.” Koga using the jewel shards for speed and power threw a punch. Kenshin moved swift as the wind dodging it. Punch after punch he dodged. Koga was livid with jealousy and reading his moves was simple for Kenshin.

Suddenly Koga swung his fist straight forward at a speed he was certain Kenshin wouldn't see and connected just briefly with Kenshin's jaw throwing him backwards into a tree. “See human, you are no match for me.” Koga gloated at Kenshin's unmoving figure as he walked closer to Kagome. Sango blocked his intended path and Koga knocked her aside like a rag doll with an audible crack as he broke her arm. Miroku glared at Koga dangerously grasping the rosary on his arm that sealed the wind tunnel. “Stop it Miroku! You'll suck in Kagome and Kenshin as well as Koga.” Inuyasha yelled behind him. Miroku lowered his hand. “Can I not also defend the woman I love?” He looked towards Sango his eyes meeting hers. With Miroku distracted Koga tossed him aside as well.

Inuyasha cracked his knuckles. “My turn huh?” Inuyasha asked placing himself between Koga and Kagome. “I will never let a skinny flea bitten beast have Kagome!” Inuyasha taunted. “Do you really think Kagome would be happy that way?” Inuyasha demanded. Koga laughed. “Of course she will. After her whelp is born, I'll smother it in its sleep and then she'll forget all of you. You'll just be old bones anyway.” Inuyasha's eyes widened. Kenshin shook his head as voices drifted in and out of his hearing. His body ached from the force that he had hit the tree with. As he struggled to regain consciousness he heard Inuyasha's voice. One thing stood out clear. “Kagome would die of grief and her blood would be on your hands, Koga.”

Anger surged white hot inside Kenshin. “I won't allow it!” Kenshin said clearly. As Inuyasha and the other's watched Kenshin seemed to disappear one moment he was against the tree wiping blood from his lip and the next he was bearing down on Koga. With speed that surpassed that of the jewel shards Kenshin rained blow after blow on Koga. “Hiten Mitsurugi style Ryu Tsui Sen!” Kenshin said as he attacked from above. Koga fell to his knees as Kenshin's reversed blade moved like lightning.

Koga stood up spitting blood. “You think that's enough to take me down? Kagome would be better off with out a pathetic human like you.” he said mockingly. Kenshin felt his anger build inside of him as the full Battousai broke free. He turned cold heartless amber eyes to the wolf at the same time he flipped his blade. “Come, I will give you a taste of the Hitokiri Battousai. Although it will probably be the last thing you will ever see.” He said. Koga smirked. “Is that supposed to scare me?”

Kenshin moved beyond the speed he had already used. “Hiten Mitsurugi Style Ryu-Kan-Sen-Tsumiji!” he said as he attacked with his reversed blade sword. Kenshin landed lightly after his strike and before Koga had a chance to retaliate turned with the godlike speed of the Hiten Mitsurugi style struck again raining blow after blow in countless succession. “Hiten Mitsurugi style Ryu-Son-Sen!”

Inuyasha heard the definite click of the sword secured in the sheath before Koga hit the ground fully unconscious and bleeding profusely. Kenshin looked down at Koga with out pity, “I spared your life this time, however, you won't be fighting for some time even after you heal.” He said coldly.

Inuyasha blinked, “What are you? I've never seen anything ever move that fast human or demon. It was unbelievable.” He said respect evident in his tone. Sango sat up carefully holding her useless arm. Miroku gaped at the swordsman remembering the first time they had met. Shippo swallowed loudly. “So is he dead?” he asked nervously.

Kenshin frowned. “No, but he won't be going anywhere for a while and he won't be fighting.” He knelt by Kagome who was semiconscious, “Are you alright?” he asked gently lifting her in his arms. Softly he touched her already bruising cheek. Kagome winced and groaned. Inuyasha growled looking at the ugly mark marring her cheek. “I can't believe Koga hit her.” He muttered as Kagome lost consciousness again.

Kenshin turned to Inuyasha. “What did Koga mean by pup” he demanded. Inuyasha frowned he had forgotten in the end of the fight about Kagome's condition. His face contorted in to a mask of fury “I'll tear that damn wolf to shreds. I should kill him now for even saying he would kill Kagome's pup after it was born.” He said cracking his deadly claws.

Kenshin's eyes widened slightly in sudden understanding; Kagome was pregnant. He was the father. He blinked suddenly dizzy. On the outside Kenshin blanked his features. He laid Kagome back in the grass and stood unsteadily. “How do you know?” Kenshin asked bluntly. Inuyasha sniffed the air towards Kagome. “Her scent is different.” He replied.

Kenshin frowned slightly. `I didn't think far enough ahead becoming Kagome's lover. I never considered pregnancy. I never thought I would ever get close to another woman let alone have a child with her.' He frowned deeper suddenly. `I used the scroll with Kagome just as that woman did with me. With Kagome's power over time and the scroll's curse, have Kagome and the child become immortal?' Kenshin thought suddenly. “What have I done?” Kenshin said quietly.

Inuyasha turned misunderstanding Kenshin's worries he growled. “You got Kagome pregnant, now you aren't sure about it?” he asked dangerously. “I saw the way you fight but if you try to walk away from this and leave the burden on Kagome alone, I swear it will be the last thing you will ever do.” He growled flexing his claws. Kenshin looked up his eyes narrowing.

“I love Kagome and I have more honor than to just walk away. We made the choice to be as one, together and this will be no different.” Kenshin said glaring at the half demon. Inuyasha sighed as he calmed down. “Humph, as long as you do then I won't worry about it.” He said quietly. “One thing for sure though Kagome will be in shock, when she hears this.” Miroku said looking down at his friend as she lay unconscious in the grass.

Kenshin looked down at her with sad eyes. “I'm happy to be the father of your child, I swear Kagome I won't let you go through this alone.” He said quietly to her sleeping form.

Inuyasha sighed. The thought of Kagome's pain was almost too much to bear. Inside he swallowed his pride. `Kagome if Kenshin ever leaves, I'll marry you, so that your child has a father. I still love you even if you don't love me.' He thought silently as the sun set. “Kenshin, why don't the two of you stay the night at Keade's hut with us? I'll help you figure out a way to tell Kagome.” Miroku asked with a smile as Inuyasha helped to put Sango on his back. Inuyasha nodded in agreement. “It might be easier on her with her friends near by.” Kenshin agreed with a nod silently gathering Kagome in his arms.

All that night as Kagome slept; Kenshin, Inuyasha and Miroku talked. Kenshin's worries plagued his thoughts. Inuyasha watched him for a while. Miroku grinned. “Kagome has a beautiful body doesn't she?” he commented suddenly. Kenshin and Inuyasha frowned glaring at the Monk. “I bet Sango would be pretty upset if she heard that.” Inuyasha said quietly. Miroku paled visibly. Kenshin shook his head forcing aside the instant flare of protective jealousy “How can you be an honorable monk?” he asked with narrowed eyes. Miroku frowned. “Gentlemen, I've just been misunderstood. I was simply saying that Kagome is very beautiful pregnant.”

Kenshin looked up at him. Hearing that Kagome was pregnant was still a shock to him. Kenshin frowned, Inuyasha was looking at Kagome in wonder. “She is beautiful. I never really looked before, I was so blind. She's nothing like Kikyo; in fact Kikyo is plain compared to Kagome. I never really looked at appearances but now that I think about it Kagome looks nothing like Kikyo, but her face is kind of familiar.” Inuyasha said. Kenshin blinked. “Midoriko.” He realized. “That's why Midoriko's face was familiar, Kagome looks almost identical.” Miroku turned. “How do you know of the lady Midoriko?” he asked. Kenshin sighed and told them of his dream.

“It makes sense, if you think about it; Kagome always was stronger than Kikyo somehow.” Miroku said thoughtfully. Inuyasha frowned. “I failed? Midoriko said that I failed? I never meant to hurt Kagome.” Kenshin frowned “I haven't been entirely honest with you. I didn't come here just to protect the jewel. I need the power of the jewel to reverse a curse put upon me when I traveled through time.” Kenshin lowered his head.

Inuyasha stood up. “What? You mean that this whole time you were just trying to get close to Kagome so you could take the jewel from her? Must be some curse for you to pull something that low. Even I didn't try to sleep with her to get the jewel, where's the honor in that?” he said angrily snatching the sword from Kenshin's hands without warning. In one motion Inuyasha drew the blade from the sheath and thrust the blade through Kenshin's chest without hesitation.

His eyes opened as he heard a soft gasp. Miroku yelled in warning too late. Inuyasha looked at the blood soaked blade protruding out of Kagome's chest in horror. Her arms were open wide as though to protect Kenshin with her body. She turned sad eyes to Inuyasha as her life faded and she fell back into Kenshin's arms. The blade had pierced Kenshin “killing” him instantly though Kagome and they fell together. A torn cry was ripped from Inuyasha as he pulled the sword blade from her chest gathered a lifeless Kagome in his arms.

Kenshin rubbed his chest and sat up after a few minutes. “I told you I was…” He stopped as his eyes fell on Kagome in Inuyasha's arms. Blood soaked the ground around her his heart sank as the vague memory of Kagome between him self and Inuyasha surfaced in his mind. Jumping up he snatched her from Inuyasha's arms “No. Not again! Not like this, Kagome please!” He touched her cheek. There was no responds.

Kenshin felt tears and anger well up inside him and spill down his cheeks. A tear dripped off of his chin and landed on her cheek. Her eyes fluttered open. “Kenshin? Why are you crying?” she asked looking up at him. “What?” Inuyasha asked as he blinked through his tears he smiled weakly. “Kagome, I- I killed you.” Her eyes widened. “That's right you were going to kill Kenshin! Why?” she asked. Kenshin shook his head at Inuyasha a silent warning to hold his tongue. Kagome looked confused and looked at her lover. “But you can't die because of the curse.” She said softly.

Kenshin frowned in relief, “Neither can you because I used the scroll with you. Why did you throw yourself between us?” he asked. Kagome sighed “I woke up and heard you all talking outside and I heard you confess about the curse and then I knew Inuyasha would try to kill you whether it was true or not so I got up and came out just in time to see Inuyasha holding the Sakabattou. I forgot about the curse and I shielded you with my body.” Kagome explained.

Kenshin shook his head taking deep breaths to calm his heart as he held her hand to his cheek. “You mustn't be so careless my love, what would I have done if you hadn't come back?” He asked softly. Kagome smiled as Kenshin set her on her feet. He hugged her close to him as he let the warmth of her body soothe his fears. “You should be more careful, our child is depending on you.” Kagome looked at Kenshin and frowned not fully comprehending the words he had just spoken. “Our child? I'm not pregnant…” her eyes widened at the serious looks surrounding her. “Koga said…Pup. I'm… pregnant?” She closed her eyes as reality sank in. She put a hand on her stomach and felt a tremor of life.

Emotions crossed her face as thoughts raced in her mind. Tears sprang to her eyes. “I can't be.” She looked up at Kenshin and he smiled at her. “Kagome, I will stay by your side.” He moved to hold her and she moved into his embrace. “You won't be here with me forever Kenshin.” She whispered as she slipped from his arms and walked away.

Kenshin watched her sadly this time she was pushing away from him. His heart ached but he knew; Kagome might never be in his arms again. They had known that his time with Kagome was temporary but they had loved each other anyway. In his real life Kenshin had been a wanderer until meeting the woman Kaoru Kamiya. Who would be his wife. Finding that out had been painful to him. Now the one he loved was hurting deeply.

The pain inside him made him feel empty. He would have gladly left Kagome's life if she would be happy. But even as he thought it, he knew the time around Kagome wasn't controlled by the scroll it was controlled by Kagome herself. If he wanted to go back Kagome would have to send him until his task was complete, then the scroll would most likely pull him back. He hung his head. “Aren't you going after her?” Inuyasha asked looking at Kenshin. Kenshin sighed. “If I go after her it will only hurt her worse right now.”

Kagome walked not caring where. Fear clenched at her heart. She was pregnant with Kenshin Himura's child. The legendary swordsman from the Meiji revolution, a man who lived and died in another lifetime long before Kagome had even been born. A man who had married a woman and fathered a son and then left them while he wandered trying to gain forgiveness for the lives he had taken during the revolution under the name of the Hitokiri Battosai. He was a man that she loved unconditionally. Her child's father; she had never allowed herself to think of who he really was. To her he was just Kenshin.

But the truth was nearly overwhelming. They could never stay together. She would be a single parent to a child who by all rights should not even exist. She would never die. Would her child? She could never live normally with her family. Here in the feudal era no one would think less of her for being alone and with child. Here it was common to see a young woman who had lost her husband in one war or another. No one would ask questions. “I'm sorry!” she cried softly although to who she didn't know.

A hand caught her and pulled her back as the ground ended abruptly in a cliff. Kagome looked up in to the cold eyes of a demon she knew well. He arched a graceful eyebrow but his expression didn't change. He looked at her face. “Did Inuyasha, do this?” he asked quietly tilting her chin up to the light. Kagome trembled with emotions and a little fear. Sesshomaru had never been this close to her before.

“No. I fell earlier today.” She lied. He looked in to her eyes. “You are lying to protect someone. But I do not care as long as it was not Inuyasha.” He said coldly. A tear slipped down her cheek and landed with a soft plop on his hand. He stared at it silently. “Someone has hurt you?” he asked softly. Kagome wept silently refusing to answer. Sesshomaru glared at each tear as it fell down her cheeks.

Those tiny drops angered him. He denied it even as he felt the anger. He was Lord Sesshomaru a powerful demon with no use for humans as a rule. But this human and Rin were different. This woman bothered him for reasons he couldn't even fathom. Why wasn't she afraid of him? What made her so brave when armies of men would tremble before him? Why did her tears irritate him so? He frowned as more drops fell. Glancing down he noticed the blood soaked cloth of her clothes.

He could clearly see it was a sword blade that had made the gash in the fabric just above her left breast. The woman should be dead. Had someone tried to murder her? He would find the fool and make him pay dearly for the attempt. He clenched his fist the only outward sign he gave of his anger. Kagome looked up. “Why did you save me?”

Sesshomaru turned without answering her question. “Your name is Kagome correct?” he asked calmly. Kagome nodded. “Go through the woods in that direction, you'll find my camp. I will return.” He pointed briefly to the west. “Do not attempt to run, I will find you.” Kagome frowned. “Am I your prisoner?” He left her question unanswered. “Do not attempt to run.” He cautioned again quietly. Kagome sank to her knees her hands over her face as she wept. Sesshomaru hardened his heart as he walked away. `Someone will pay dearly.' he thought.

Kenshin shook his head as he searched for Kagome. “I am a fool. I should have gone after her.” After Inuyasha had punched him and told him to wake up and Kenshin had calmed down his anger. Kenshin had realized he'd been standing there feeling sorry for himself. Kagome was what mattered. He had let her leave without even trying to sooth her feelings. Kenshin felt someone behind him and jumped narrowly avoiding a glowing green whip. He turned and looked at his assailant. “You are the one.” The tall man said coldly.

Kenshin blinked for a second he saw Inuyasha standing there. “What do you want with me?” Kenshin asked coldly instantly ready to fight. The tall regal looking demon narrowed his eyes. “I will make you suffer for attempting to murder that woman called Kagome.” He said flashing towards Kenshin with his poison claws. Kenshin again avoided the attack. “Where is she?” he asked as he calmly eased in to a battoujutsu fighting stance. Sesshomaru frowned. “I do not need to explain anything to a murderer who will die at my hands.”

Kenshin narrowly evaded a third attack surprising and angering the demon lord. “I just want to speak to her. Let me pass and I will let you walk away.” Kenshin said coldly. “Silence! I am not a fool. You are covered in her blood and the scent of countless more victims hangs on you like a shroud.” he said as his claws began to glow with the green of his poison whip. Kenshin glared avoiding another attack of the whip. “I did not make an attempt to murder Kagome, she carries my child.” Kenshin said as he landed a few feet away.

Sesshomaru narrowed his eyes angrier then he had been. Not only had the man attempted to kill Kagome but he claimed the child she carried was his. The woman had been dishonored and betrayed. He seethed. Sesshomaru drew his Tokijin. “Dragon strike.” He said firmly. Blue energy erupted from the blade and sped towards Kenshin. Kenshin drew the Sakabattou. “Hiten Mitsurugi style Do Ryu Sen!” the ultra sonic wave sliced through the dragon strike and dissipated it.

“If you do not wish to be defeated, tell me where Kagome is.” He said calmly. Sesshomaru raised his eyebrow. He had not expected a human to counter his attack. “You think a mere human could defeat me?” he demanded baring his fangs in deep hatred the rest of his face remained an impenetrable mask.

Kenshin narrowed his lavender eyes. “If that attack and your whip and claws are your only weapons I can defeat you easily. I've seen your movements and even at your fastest you are no match for me.” Kenshin said coldly confident. Sesshomaru snarled determined to wipe the confidence from his face, he moved at his fastest and brought the sword down neatly slicing the air where the human had been standing only an instant before. “Hiten Mitsurugi style Ryu Tsui Sen!” Kenshin said as he attacked Sesshomaru from above.

The move was clean and Sesshomaru grunted in pain and shock. “Damn you!” he growled wiping blood from his lip and holding his shoulder. His eyes pulsed, red for a second. He held out his Tokijin again and firmly used the dragon strike again. Kenshin seemed to vanish and as before he attacked from nowhere. “Hiten Mitsurugi style Ryu Kan Sen Tsumuji!” he said moving faster then any human or demon had that Sesshomaru had seen. Again the move was cleanly done and Sesshomaru was flung back by the force of the attack. In mid air he recovered and spat blood.

Inside he was astonished, who was this human who had not only countered his attacks but had also managed to attack him not just once but twice now. He glared down at the human. “Name yourself so that when you die I can tell Kagome of your defeat.” He said mockingly.

Kenshin looked up at the demon that had looked so confident. “My name is Kenshin Himura, but I also have another name, I am the Hitokiri Battousai, but you needn't bother to remember because unless you tell me of Kagome's location I will take your head in my next attack.” He said emotionlessly as he flipped the blade of his sword, his eyes shifting to amber.

Sesshomaru felt the unfamiliar feeling of fear creep over him and he sheathed his sword. “She is under my protection and will be of use to me in slaying Naraku.” He said calmly.

“Tell me little brother, did you know about the assault on your woman? Did you allow this man to lay his blood soaked hands on her?” Sesshomaru asked without turning to see Inuyasha's expression. Inuyasha looked over at Kenshin and shivered at the inhuman coldness in his gaze. He had caught the smell of fear from Sesshomaru and had shuddered “You have it all wrong, Sesshomaru, what do you care any way? Kagome is a human.” Inuyasha asked.

Sesshomaru turned his eyes pulsing red again. “I see you also are covered in her blood. So you attempted to murder her.” He said as the demon aura around him thickened. Inuyasha scratched his head Sesshomaru was being rather protective over a human. “Sesshomaru, I didn't attempt anything. I tried to kill him and Kagome got in the way.” Sesshomaru's eyes went white again as he turned cold amber eyes to the human. “Why do you want him dead? Is it because he stole what was yours?” he asked looking over at the man who had called him self Battousai.

Inuyasha shook his head trying to figure out what Sesshomaru's reasoning was. “Kagome was never mine.” Inuyasha said sadly and then looked confused. “What did you mean by using Kagome to kill Naraku?” he asked and then suddenly glared “You would! Wouldn't you?!”

Kenshin looked at Inuyasha as his tone changed from confusion to malice. “He plans to use Kagome as bait, Kenshin. Can you beat him alone or do you need help?” he said drawing Tetsaigua. Kenshin frowned, his eyes becoming colder as he turned them on Sesshomaru. “Bait, for what?” he demanded. Inuyasha snarled. “The last battle” he said baring his fangs at his brother. “Naraku wants the jewel and Kagome is the jewel's keeper. Naraku would give anything to have Kagome. Remember Kagome is the reincarnation of the woman he wanted fifty-three years ago. I can only imagine the horror that awaits Kagome, if Naraku gets a hold of her; the fact that Kagome can't die now only makes it worse.” Inuyasha said furiously.

Kenshin gripped his sword so hard his knuckles went white. Sesshomaru turned his back and began to walk away. He had been willing to risk Kagome knowing he could bring her back from the dead but he would not be the one to cause her endless torment. “What the hell? Where are you going Sesshomaru?” Inuyasha asked angrily as Sesshomaru walked away.

Kenshin sheathed his sword keeping a careful eye on the demon he had just spared. “Human, we shall join forces in a temporary alliance.” Sesshomaru said coldly as he paused. “Until Naraku is dead we shall be allies. Follow me I shall take you to Kagome.” He said turning again to walk away.

Sesshomaru walked silently. `What am I doing? I made an alliance with a human. I can hardly believe that human was able to make me tremble for even a second. When he unleashed his attacks I sensed a power in him. It is impossible to think a human could best me, yet I know this human can.' He thought as he walked. That had been the reason he had made the alliance. To have been beaten by a human, the thought made him angry. He would have been shamed irreparably by such a thing. No it would be much better to wait and kill him after the last battle. After all he was Sesshomaru a master assassin in the feudal era with no equal until now. “Inuyasha, go prepare your companions to depart. We leave the instant the sun breaks over the horizon.” Inuyasha looked at him skeptically.

“No I'll go with Kenshin to find Kagome.” Kenshin shook his head. “Go Inuyasha. I'll be fine.” Kenshin said with a confident glare. Inuyasha nodded slowly. “All right, but you better come back with Kagome.”

Kenshin followed Sesshomaru silently trying to put his thoughts together. Sesshomaru stopped and caught Kenshin by the throat. “Alliance or no alliance; if you attempt to hurt Kagome, you will die at my hands even if it the last thing I ever do, understand.” Kenshin didn't struggle in his grasp at all. Sesshomaru dropped him before he killed him there and then he would not be an oath-breaker.

Kenshin stood up. “I agree.” He said coolly. Sesshomaru nodded once and continued. Kagome sat on the ground with her back to woods. Her shoulders shook as she wept. “Kagome!” Kenshin called to her as he broke through the trees in a run. Kagome stood up and ran to him. “I'm sorry, Kenshin.” She said holding him tightly.

“It's alright Kagome, I'm here. Forgive me. I want so badly to be a husband to you and a father for our child.” Kagome pulled away from him looking at the ground her words cut into her very soul even as she said them. “You are the Hitokiri Battosai. You have a completely different life from me. I knew that. I can't ever live a normal life again as the keeper of the jewel. Kenshin, you will have a wife and a son to take care of. When everything is done I want you to leave and live for them. I can't love anymore. I can't love anyone. I'm sorry.” She said turning her back.

Kenshin raised his hand to reach for her and then let it drop. “Kagome, I will love you no matter what time I came from and no matter what time I go back to. I can never forget about you. If you don't want me to touch you that is okay, I'll love you from a distance. I will still protect you as I promised Kagome.” Kenshin said taking a deep breath he put his arms around her.

“Kagome, I may have another life but as I told you before that history has only been written in your time. I am only eighteen years old. I choose to be with you just as you chose to be with me. If you are afraid to be alone then let me be beside you. I will be here for some time yet. I have not fulfilled my responsibilities yet not to you or to Lady Midoriko who summoned me here for your sake. Do you understand Kagome?” he asked looking down into her deep brown eyes that were shining wetly with tears. “I am here in this time only to love you. To be with you is my only reason.” Kenshin said softly.

Sesshomaru frowned thoughtfully from the shadows he had heard the entire conversation. `Hitokiri Battousai; that was what he had called him self before; from another time, was that even possible?' he wondered. He frowned `I do not have the time to sit here while they gaze in to each others eyes.' he thought stepping out of the shadows.

Kagome looked up at Kenshin through her tears. “For me, that is the reason you are here? Is that true?” she asked. Kenshin took hold of her hand. “I would never lie to you. Besides here in this time we have centuries together.” He said softly. Kagome smiled gently and hugged Kenshin. “Kenshin I want to have our baby. And I don't want you to leave! I didn't mean it. I want to be with you even if I have to bend the laws of time” she said pulling him closer. Kenshin pulled back and looked at her. “We've already done that.” he said softly.

Sesshomaru arrogantly walked over and roughly grabbed her arm pulling her away from Kenshin. “You humans waste too much time. You try my patience.” He said coldly dragging Kagome away expecting Kenshin to follow. Kagome pulled her arm away as though burned “Let go of me!” she shouted slapping his face. She looked up in horror at the red mark on his cheek surely she had sealed her doom.

She turned to run and found her self in Sesshomaru's grip tighter. He had been humiliated with his defeat and now he had been insulted his temper snapped. “I could kill you before he had time to draw his blade. But as it seems you can not die; I assure you I would find great pleasure in killing you again and again.” He growled menacingly. Kagome's eyes widened in horror as he looked at her coldly, “My alliance with you human did not include an alliance with this woman that I am aware of.” He said glaring at Kenshin.

Kenshin frowned coldly his hand on his sword hilt. “Sesshomaru, the alliance includes Kagome because she is my life.” He said with an air of finality. Sesshomaru looked over at the look on Kenshin's face and released her with a frown. “For the alliance I will spare you and because I surprised you I will forgive you this one time.” He said coolly. Kagome avoided his glare and went to Kenshin. He narrowed his eyes once more at Sesshomaru and gathered Kagome into his arms as she wept he did not take his eyes off of the demon lord. Sesshomaru nearly growled in frustration. `What possessed me to walk over and pull them apart? I can not possibly be jealous, that would be far beneath me as a demon lord. But perhaps…' he frowned at the trees. “Let's return to the others before I change my mind.” He growled.

Back at the hut and after they had all eaten dinner, Kenshin stood up and walked outside. In the darkness he walked away from the hut. Drawing the reversed blade he went through drill after drill form after form. He didn't stop until he was exhausted he had come too close to completely losing his temper when Sesshomaru had threatened Kagome. When he had fought the wolf demon he had reverted back to the Battousai. The old habits were going to be more difficult to over come then he thought. At least he had not killed again although he had not been bluffing when he had told Sesshomaru that he would take his head.

“Impressive.” Sesshomaru said walking out of the shadows. Kenshin frowned, “Not really. It's just killing with technique.” He replied. Sesshomaru frowned. “I think you degrade yourself Kenshin.” He said flatly. Inuyasha walked out from the trees. Sesshomaru blinked Inuyasha was human. “I agree, with him.” Inuyasha said looking at Kenshin. “The way you dealt with Koga was incredible and when I watched you fight with Sesshomaru. I didn't think it was possible for a human to actually do what you did.”

Kenshin slipped his sword back into the sheath. “I should have been more in control.” He said walking over to a tree and sitting down knowing the other two had no idea of what he was talking about. Although the two opponents he had faced were demon and not human they still were living beings and Kenshin felt slightly sick at close he had come to killing them both especially the wolf. Though it was true he had not dealt a finishing blow the damage would have been enough to slaughter a human.

Inuyasha walked over and sat down on the ground. Surprisingly Sesshomaru also took a seat. “So, what is our strategy…” he asked the other two dropping his arrogant attitude a little. Inuyasha frowned “I don't think we will have to hunt him down. He wants the jewel he'll come to us.” he said slowly. Sesshomaru nodded. “So in essence you will be using Kagome as bait.” Kenshin turned frigid amber eyes to the demon lord. “no.” Sesshomaru shivered in spite of himself.

Kagome woke in the night and sat up. As she stood up a wave of dizziness hit her, and she felt the bile rise in her throat. Stumbling she went outside and emptied the contents her stomach. Sango held her hair back with her undamaged hand. “It's alright Kagome.” She said soothingly. “Have a drink to wash out your mouth.” She said offering a water bottle. Kagome took the bottle and rinsed her mouth and spat until the taste was gone. “I thought I wasn't supposed to have morning sickness till later.” Kagome groaned.

Sango smiled sympathetically. Kenshin came over and touched Kagome's shoulder with a gentleness that took Sesshomaru by surprise as he watched. After his single comment Kenshin had remained with cold amber eyes that must have been the part of him know as Hitokiri. Know seeing Kenshin with his pregnant “mate” was like night and day. “Are you feeling ill Kagome?” Kenshin asked gently.

Inuyasha walked over and growled his worry coming out as anger his human emotions were always mixed up and frequently came out harsher than intended. “What good are you to anyone if you're going to be sick all of the time?” he said with a frown.

Kagome stood up and glared at him. “I'm sick of you telling me I am not good for whatever reason. If your comparison is Kikyo then you can both go to hell with my blessing! If you can't be nice to me then don't speak to me. I don't need a friend like that. My Kenshin will protect me always” She said thrusting her finger at his chest. Inuyasha blinked. “What did you just say?” he demanded. Kagome glared “I said, you and Kikyo can go to hell and MY Kenshin will protect me.” she repeated slowly.

Inuyasha folded his arms a crossed his chest like a pouty little kid. “Fine, stay with your beloved human, but just remember he won't be around forever and I will.” As Kagome's temper rose so did her power. Crackling blue energy surrounded her. “Just be glad your human...” she hissed turning on her heel and stalking into the hut followed closely by Kenshin who looked back at Inuyasha with a frown and Sango who narrowed her eyes furiously.

“Argh!” Inuyasha said stalking in to the trees. Sesshomaru sat back and nearly laughed. These humans were much more amusing then he had thought them to be. He frowned at him self. “I think spending any time with these humans has made me soft.” He muttered as he allowed him self a silent smirk.

The next morning Kagome and Kenshin walked in to the forest. While they walked Kagome confided in him about her fears and her feelings and he held her hand entwining her fingers with his. “Kenshin, I have to go back home and tell my mom about the baby before she leaves on vacation. Will you come with me?” Kagome said abruptly. Kenshin smiled “Of course I will. I am partially to blame aren't I?” he replied calmly. Kagome nodded. “My mom is going to be angry at us and I'm anxious about telling her and yet she does have the right to know but I know I'll be alright if you are there.” she said giving his hand a small squeeze.

Kenshin smiled and looked at her he studied her face for a moment with serious lavender eyes. “You look a little tired love; I could carry if you need a break.” Kenshin offered. “I am a little tired. Now that I think about it I didn't sleep much last night.” She said. Kenshin crouched down to let Kagome climb on his back. Once she was settled comfortably he began to walk towards the well.

Inuyasha stood up from where he'd been sitting next to the old well. “Kagome can…can I come with you, I just wanted to be your friend and my worry about you came out all wrong. I hate being human because of that. Will you forgive me and let me go with you?” he said as his ear twitched nervously. Kenshin stopped and looked back at Kagome. Kagome smiled and turned to Kenshin he nodded in agreement and let her down. “I'm sorry too. I said some terrible things to you that I didn't mean. Will you forgive me?” she asked looking at the ground. Inuyasha walked over to her and gently lifted her chin. He smiled at her. “I expected you would need some time to relax before we began looking for Naraku, when I found out about the baby. I don't know why I say things I don't mean when all I want to say is that… I love you.” he froze as the words left his lips and he looked at Kagome with a bright blush.

Kagome sighed. “I can't help the way I feel. Just as I can't help the way I feel about Kenshin. I love him. I-I'm honored to carry the child of the legendary swordsman. And I'm happy that you care for me, but Inuyasha I care about you as my friend. It might have been different once but that was a while ago. Now Kenshin is my world.” Inuyasha sighed closing his eyes against the pain of rejection that rippled through him.

Kenshin smiled sadly and offered his hand to Inuyasha in friendship. Inuyasha took it and smiled through his pain, “I... don't mind... if you and Kagome are together. I'm truly glad she is happy. But could you not …uh you know…” he cleared his throat forcing down the lump that had formed. “mate, at least when I'm within hearing?” he asked knowing he had no right to ask he changed his tone. “I have really keen ears and Kagome really isn't very quiet, that part does make me jealous of you Kenshin.” he said forcing his voice to be light an teasing. Kagome blushed and looked at the ground, Inuyasha must have been close to the hot spring during one of their secret rendezvous. Kenshin laughed blushing as well, but he ignored the request. “Let's go get this over with. It won't be pretty but Inuyasha and I are right here with you.”
