Chapter 5: Day One at Kagome's House

After eating a nice healthy breakfast Kagome excused herself from the table and headed to her study to get some work done. She was a genius when it came to computers and science as well as English surprisingly. She was actually a well known writer. She wrote under a pen-name of course and had her editor send her the check from her latest release. But truth be told Kagome was lonely. She was incredibly lonely she had been celibate an entire 3 months…That must be a record. Well for her at least. Though she wasn't sure that it was from being celibate that made her lonely; she believed that it was something else, but as soon as the thought was there she immediately brushed it off as it was a mere annoyance to her.

Sex…That had to be it…All she needed was good hard sex. Rough and Uncomplicated sex; no strings attached.

After all Sex may not be the meaning of life, but it's a great way to pass the time until we figure it out. A great person once said.

Kagome sighed once more her brain going into overdrive mode as she sat before her computer staring at the cell phases that danced in front of her face. She was trying to find what seemed to be wrong in the process of mitosis with these cells. It was inexplicably strange; she had never seen such a sight before. Cells just don't simply go from Interphase to Anaphase to Telophase and then to Cytokinesis. It was utterly frustrating.

You see a cell when dividing is called mitosis. But before a cell goes through Mitosis it goes through G1 phase, then the S phase and last but not least G2 phase. These phases are called Interphase. Interphase leads up to mitosis. During the G1 phase that is the cell growth, During the S phase that is the DNA replication and the G2 phase that is the preparation for Mitosis.

Mitosis consists of four phases: Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase and Telophase. Some may call Cytokinesis phase 5, some people. Both answers are correct in scientific terms. Prophase is the very first stage of Mitosis. It is also the longest phase taking up to 50-60% of the total period of cell division or Mitosis. During Prophase the chromosomes become visible, chromosomes are a rod-shaped structure that carries genes and characteristics an organism inherits from it's parents; it is located in a cell nucleus. The centrioles which are one of two tiny structures located in the cytoplasm of animal cells near the nuclear envelope and a spindle begins to form as the nuclear envelope breaks down.

Which brings us to step two; Metaphase. This is when the chromosomes, that are each connected to a spindle fiber at its centromere line up across the center of the cell. Quite easy to grasp, many find this to be one of the more easy phases to understand Kagome sure did. The centromere is the middle of the chromosome. A chromosome is made up of two sister chromatids.

Anaphase come's next. This stage is when the sister chromatids separate into their own chromosome's and are split apart. The last phase depending on your view is Telophase. This is when the chromosomes go to opposite ends of the cell and lose there shape. Two nuclear membranes form. And what Kagome figured to be the last step was Cytokinesis. It is when the cytoplasm splits in half and become an identical replica of each other with a duplicate set of chromosomes. Simple right? It would have been had the damn process not skipped two very important stages. And that had frustrated her to no end.

(A/n: sorry for boring you with such boring stuff but I thought it would be a kick to see what Kagome had to do for a living well…part of it anyway.)

She wasn't even going to go into the details of Meiosis 1 and Meiosis 2 it was already frustrating as it was. To say this wasn't helping her mood a bit was an understatement. Honestly. She wasn't even going to start, she was tired, bored, frustrated and completely angry, glaring at the damned microscope set up next to her computer. She was willing it to burst into flames but stopped herself because it might actually happen; she was the guardian of the elements. She sighed and stretched long and languorously. It was simply impossible. She now knew without a doubt that she should have listened to Saito when he said not to take the assignment. Now she regretted it and it was a damn shame. It was indeed a very interesting piece of work. There was also a little fact that also irked her. It didn't seem either animal or plant. In fact it seemed…like a completely different species that they had not found out yet. Or perhaps another sub-category of species.

And that if anything bothered her. She did not like to feel so inadequate.

Kagome shoved those thoughts away for another day; preferably when she was in a more patient and subdued mood. Which was totally not today. She was feeling aggravated especially after what happened in the dinning room early today. She needed to kill some steam before it became too much and it was never a good thing when her blood beast got the best of her. It would certainly not happen whilst Tohru and her companions were here. Nor would it happen while the Reikai Tantei were here. She would not smudge up Sesshoumaru's reputation or her own friends and herself by losing control.

Not that Kagome Higurashi cared about her reputation. A reputation is simply the world's opinion of you; and more often than not the world is wrong, that is simply how it is. No…She was simply worried of her friends. Sesshoumaru's especially his ego was so easy to bruise. Poor thing. They are demon lords and if their reputation does not precede them then they are likely to be challenged; on the grounds of their integrity.

Kagome walked out of her study using her never ending determination as to not blow the whole damn room up after she left. She had some very important and expensive items in their. Not that money mattered to her, just sentimental value. `Oh bother. Since when had anything had sentimental value?' Kagome thought to herself…That's when she understood. Since her companions, her allies, her dare she say it friends had come into her life. They filled up a small whole inside she thought would never be filled but that still left a whole lot of her heart still open and bleeding after all they only met when she was 12 a pup to them technically but by then…She'd probably seen, felt, and endured more than any of the others…

As she was walking down the halls she had not noticed the other person walking towards her with his head down a thoughtful expression etched onto his face as well. They were both walking towards each other and didn't notice the other until they ran smack dab into each other. Kagome fell on the man now identified as Hatori. She stood and offered him a hand trying to retain some sense of dignity.

"I am terribly sorry Sohma-san. I was not looking as to where I was going." Kagome stated her voice just as blank as before looking at him with cold blue eyes.

"It is quite alright. It was actually partially my fault as well had I not been in such deep thought I would not have run into you." Hatori said trying to calm his rapidly beating heart. Kagome raised a brow and nodded her understanding.

"Very well." Kagome said and glided past him leaving nothing but the scent of her on the air; the scent of ice and flowers…Like winter changing into spring. Ice of winter with its chill and the promise of a new tomorrow was the flowers; lavender and sakura blossoms with just a hint of vanilla. It was an absolutely delicious scent. Hatori thought to himself before mentally berating himself for thinking such a thing that her scent was edible. He needed a cold shower.

Kagome walked down the halls this time completely aware of anything and everything around her should someone or something choose to attack her or bump into her. Her icy blue eyes met another pair of blue eyes before they blinked and bowed down to her. It was Jigoku. His name meant hell. His parents thought it would be a hoot to have a child named hell when in fact Jigoku was one of the most precious creatures.

He was a stunning kitsune with long startling gold hair and adorable ears on the top of his head a shade darker then his hair. His eyes were an incredibly light blue a cornflower blue or more like a Siberian huskies eyes. That light almost translucent blue. The right side of his face was marred by scars that never seemed to fade thanks to the holy power that went into creating them. He believed he was now imperfect and fled from his perfect clan taking refuge in Kagome's forests surrounding her home.

She brought him back with her and tended to him. He had grown to feel strongly for the beauty standing in front of him with such power coursing through her veins. She had truly accepted him. Kagome had not shunned him like so many others of his kind, because kitsune and inuyoukai are said to be the best looking youkai and Kagome agreed with that statement. This included him. She cared about him and liked his scars. She said that in some different clans this would make him extraordinarily attractive. But she also said that the scars added to who he was and what he had been through and he knew this to be true. Kagome had some pretty nasty scars as well that even she could not heal. She had many and she understood how it was to be ridiculed. But then again…They were too awed by her beauty to notice the imperfections behind the perfect mask.

Kagome had walked up to Jigoku while he was thinking and gently traced the side of his face where the scars were causing him to snap out of his thoughts immediately and instinctually hiding his scars that were the very bane of his existence. Kagome grabbed his chin and forced him to look at her. She rubbed her perfectly smooth left check against his imperfect right one and said into his ear softly.

"Don't you dare hide yourself from me, `Goku…Don't you ever try and hide from me you hear…I don't care about the scars…You are still beautiful to me." Kagome said laying a tender kiss upon his mouth gently licking at his lips as he responded to the attentions; speaking more than any words could say to him. His lips were still in perfect condition as was his nose and eyes as well as the left side of his face; none of that mattered to Kagome. Just this demon that was to kind for words and so hurt with the pain of his scars, the pain that others have caused him. And in that one moment she held him in her arms and kissed him she wanted to rid the world of all those that had ever dared caused him harm in one form or another. The odd thing was also only his face was marred everything else was perfect.

"You're looks do not matter to me `Goku. I will care about you no matter what happens do you understand me?" Kagome asked softly to the man that had his arms wrapped around her waist and his face buried in her hair. He nodded and slightly sighed against her neck sending delicious little shivers down her spine.

He let her go after a few minutes of simply basking in her presence. Some make her out to be cruel and cold but he knew that somewhere underneath the mask that everyone else sees there was something else…Something more…human. Though he knew Kagome not to be human he knew that she was once and as such had once had those emotions. But what truly bothered him was that she lived alone with the pain inside. Never telling the others of whatever was hidden inside her, yet always letting them tell her about their pains about how much they had suffered. Yet no one had ever thought to listen to the pain that she suffered. Jigoku just realized that. She was like a mountain, steadfast and strong never bowing to the wind no matter how much it howled. Never letting her true emotions seize her. She never let herself cry. Never. That was one of her rules. Don't ever let anyone see you cry.

Jigoku watched as his friend and `master' walked away nothing belying Kagome's true self. She did not want to be seen. He realized. She wished nothing more to be free of the pain yet she knew not how to and did not wish anyone to know what had happened to her so long ago. He was blind to have missed it. How could he have not seen it before? He thought to himself. The haunting loneliness in her eyes that never seemed to truly fade…How had everyone missed it? He thought thinking about Kagome. What happened Kagome and how come you haven't told anyone?

Meanwhile as Kagome walked down the hall towards the dojo she sighed softly to herself. She did not want to think of the past. She did not want to remember. Many people believe that she is perfect and in a sense she is. But she is emotionally constipated. She has trouble letting her feelings show, she does not want to. She may be `perfect' but at what cost? The truth was that she had wished that she was not `perfect' because the cost to be so was too great, simply too great.

As Kagome stood in front of her dojo she quickly composed herself. She did not intend to become so lost in thought. As she opened the large doors she heard the distinct sounds of Rihatsu being hassled to train. She turned the left side of the dojo where her kodachi's and wakizashi's were hung. She smirked as she saw Rihatsu bite Shizen's very sensitive kitsune ear drawing blood. She started chuckling as she heard his pained yell. Both demons turned to the sound of the husky chuckle to see Kagome trying to keep the amusement from her face.

Shizen pouted as his green-gold eyes glimmering with mirth and Rihatsu smiled happily that he had managed to get his favorite person to laugh. Kagome sauntered towards the twosome with a small easy smile on her face. She picked Rihatsu up and swung him around in a circle at unparalleled speed as he squealed excitedly before she placed him back down. He cuddled into the circle of her arms. Shizen watched on fondly at the two; they were just so cute together.

Kagome walked up to Shizen and nuzzled his shoulder with her nose. He had to bend down for her to gain access to his ears. She gently licked at his poor abused ear healing it with her tongue as he sagged in her arms becoming completely boneless under her attentions. Rihatsu watched all of his amused. Shizen was emitting a deep rumbling purr as she continued to heal the ear that had stopped bleeding and was by now a light pink in color. As the wound healed Kagome sunk to a sitting position as well. She nudged him from his hazy state of comfort and stared at him with an amused expression on her face; Rihatsu in her lap with the exact same expression.

Shizen smiled sheepishly. Rihatsu started laughing. Kagome just smiled softly at the two.

"Why did you gnaw at Shizen's ear?" Kagome asked the little Neko-leopard youkai who looked away guiltily.

"He was trying to make me train with the kodachi. I don't want to train." Rihatsu whined giving Kagome the ever adorable puppy eyes and pout. Kagome in turn gave him a stern look.

"You have to train Rihatsu. It is very important. And very useful. One day in the future you are going to be thanking Shizen and the others for making you go through all of this training." Kagome told him.

Rihatsu's eyes began to sparkle with hope as he looked up at Kagome. She instantly became weary. He wanted something.

"Does that mean that you will teach me as well?" He asked his blue eyes gleaming. Kagome nodded her head cautiously.

"YAY! Kagome's gonna teach me to be a good fighter like her!!!" Rihatsu exclaimed bouncing around.

Kagome sighed as she took in the hyperactive kitten. "There are some things that I can not teach you and you have to learn in time kit, do not rush growing up, live your life first kit. There are also some things that I will not teach you, simply because they are much too dangerous." Kagome said her voice stern.

"Awww…Oh well…" Rihatsu said perking up again his little neko ears twitching in anticipation and happiness. Kagome cuddled him and purred a gentle soothing rumbling sound deep in her chest as he cuddled his head into her neck. Shizen simply sat on the side watching the interaction.

~*~

Koenma was not amused. He had been trying to find Kagome for close to two hours now and had no such luck. He really needed to speak with her and the others about the threat that Naraku poses. He obviously intends to do harm. It was no help to him that his spirit detectives found him amusing. He was trying to be serious.

"Yusuke, Kuwabara, Hiei, Kurama." Koenma called to the four trailing behind his seething figure.

"Whatd'ya want toddler?"

"Hn."

"Huh?"

"Yes Koenma?"

Came the four different replies.

"I need you guys to find Kagome-sama, Sesshoumaru-sama, Shizen-sama, Kashaku-sama, Kazero, Hitaru, Kiro-sama, and Saito-sama. I need to speak with them immediately about the threat of Naraku." Koenma stated in all seriousness.

They nodded and went off in separate directions. Yusuke just going down the path closest to him and Kuwabara going down the opposite corridor. Hiei and Kurama used there senses, in there case smell and the jagan eye. Yusuke found Kiro the Lord of the North in the library reading through one of Kagome's many books.

The library itself was impressive. Its walls were lined from the ground to the ceiling was lined in shelves that were filled with books, many of them old and ancient, yet surprisingly well preserved. Any historian would love it. At the far end of the library was a fireplace that just seemed to blend with the books. Lord Kiro was sitting in a plush burgundy sofa with fluffy pillows ranging from crème, white, brown, different shades of red and orange.

"Uh Hey." Yusuke said to get his attention.

Kiro looked up from the text of one of Kagome's books to look up at the detective. He noticed that the detective seemed somewhat nervous in his presence. His brown eyes kept flickering away from Kiro. Yusuke was fidgeting under Kiro's intense stare. His blue eyes were very sharp and serious.

"Yes, is there something I can do for you?" Kiro asked his voice coming out in a natural rumble.

"Uh…Yeah. The toddler sent me to get you. He said that he needed to talk to you about that Naraku dude." Yusuke said.

"Very Well…Where shall I meet Koenma?" He asked Yusuke eyes alight at Koenma's nickname.

Yusuke sweatdropped.

"He didn't say."

Kiro chuckled at the young Reikai Tantei and walked out the of Kagome's library tracking down the young ruler of Rekai's ki and aura. He left Yusuke standing there quite baffled as to where he was going. Yusuke shrugged it off. Hey he delivered the message that's all the Toddler said to do.

Hiei had found Saito, Sesshoumaru and Kashaku discussing battle strategies in Kagome's weapon room. Her stock of artillery was impressive. Many large caliber guns, regular guns, gun powder, bullets etc were lined up against the north and west wall taking up all the room. There were probably even hidden compartments. On the south and east walls were traditional weapons such as the kodachi's (Small Sword), katana's (Swords), kaiken (Daggers), hiraikotsu (Bone Boomerang), hoippu (Whips), kyuushi (Bow and Arrows), etc. It was a magnificent site. Any warriors dream. And Hiei was a warrior.

`I must come back here sometime to examine these weapons.' He thought to himself. Already itching to get his hands on the beautiful obsidian blade on the southern wall. He walked into the room and the two lords and the prince looked at him waiting for what he had to say.

"Koenma needs to speak with you about Naraku." Was all Hiei said before leaving just as quietly and as quickly as he came.

The three raised an eyebrow each in unison. They shrugged it off and commenced to store the strategies for later usage and discussion. They exited the weapon room and Sesshoumaru made sure to lock and code it with his hand print, retina scan, voice identification and the door simply disappeared going back to its hidden area. There was a master code in case of emergency but that code only worked for Kagome. Kagome was very…adamant about keeping her weapons in top condition and having them. She was very…resolute in keeping weapons in every room of the house in there own little secret compartments and weapon lockers of course. But still it's better to be safe than sorry.

Besides it doesn't do you a damn bit of good if you have a weapon and it isn't with you. Paranoia or Caution hard to tell the difference sometimes. But let's just say Kagome had enough ammo and weaponry to start another world war. Just goes to show you how cautious or paranoid she is.

Kurama meanwhile was wandering down the halls until he heard a noise that distinctly sounded like fighting. He turned into the open doorway and was met with two of the Sohma's in a fist fight. The young girl Tohru was trying desperately to break them up saying things such as `this is Kagome's house, she might get mad.' And other such things. He entered the room to see the other Sohma's simply talking as if it were an everyday kind of thing. The younger kids were watching some show on the television.

"Excuse me?" Kurama called being the ever polite gentleman.

Tohru and the older Sohma men turned. So did the two that were in combat. He found himself under the scrutiny of Shigure, Hatori, Akito, Kureno, Ayame, Ritsu, Tohru and the two fighters Yuki and Kyo. He flushed a bit.

"Have any of you seen Hitaru-sama, Kazero-sama, Shizen-sama or Kagome-sama?" He asked.

"No…Is something wrong?" Tohru asked worried for her sister.

"Eh? No, nothing is wrong. Koenma-sama just needs to speak with them concerning Naraku." Kurama said trying to comfort the worried girl.

"Oh…" Tohru said.

"We can help you find them." Akito said his dark eyes remaining blank.

The rest of the Sohma's turned surprised eyes towards the head Sohma. They then exchanged weary glances with each other. Akito never did anything that he did not want to or that he didn't have something to gain from. What did he have to gain from looking for them?

Kurama nodded his head and smiled at them before motioning them outside.

The kids followed reluctantly.

Just as they made it into the hall they bumped into Koenma, Sesshoumaru, Kiro, Kashaku, Saito, Hiei and Yusuke. Kiro had with him his daughter Alara who was desperately trying to gain the attention of any of the other lords which would be Sesshoumaru and Kashaku. Heck she was even trying to get the attention of Yusuke and Hiei.

Then she laid her eyes on Kurama and the other handsome males in the vicinity and she picked them as the lesser targets. She attempted to hang on each one of them rubbing her body on them. Even Shigure, the pervert was utterly disgusted. Kiro grabbed her upper arm and tossed her into a portal that he had summoned that would take her back to her mother in the Northern lands. He apologized profusely for his daughter's atrocious behavior. After that little episode they all just decided to stick together seeing as Koenma came to tell Kurama that the four missing people weren't anywhere in the house.

"Are you positive that you checked the entire house?" Kashaku asked the aggravated prince.

"YES!" He shouted in frustration. His pacifier almost flying out of his mouth.

"You do know that there are many hidden rooms and secret passageways right? Not even us, Kagome's dearest friends, no where they all are." Sesshoumaru filled in.

Koenma turned red and threw his hands up in frustration. He couldn't even find Botan.

"Did you check the gardens?" Tohru asked meekly, "there are gardens right?"

They turned to her surprised. She flushed under all of the gazes directed her way and shrugged softly.

"When we were smaller Kagome used to go to the gardens all of the time. I thought perhaps she still does the same." Kashaku, Saito and Sesshoumaru exchanged glances.

"She still frequents the gardens when she has the time." Saito said his blue eyes locked on Tohru's brown eyes. What Tohru saw allowed her to trust Saito. She saw in Saito's eyes how much that he cared for her sister.

"Then let's go to the gardens." Koenma said before stomping down the hallway. He turned back halfway down the hall and looked at them before smiling and asking sheepishly where they were. Sesshoumaru turned the opposite way and lead them down a different hall, through twisting corridors and finally out the French doors that lead to the gardens.

They were in awe of the beauty and sheer size of the gardens. It was any gardener or botany experts dream. There were plants and trees from Oak's to Maples to Cherry Blossoms. Roses, Forget me not's, Lilies, Lavender's etc. It seems that Kagome had a different setting for each. So that they could all grow and flourish.

"Kagome planted each of these herself. The tree's were already here but the flowers are all her own. She made areas suited to each plant and flower." Saito said.

"Where is she?" Koenma said starting to panic.

"Right there." Yuki said pointing to the young woman bathed in sunlight near the forget me not's.

Kagome was sitting with one knee up and the other stretched out in front of her. They say Shizen sitting across from her and Rihatsu in her lap. Jigoku and Shinya were on either side of her cuddling up to her side. Hitaru and Kazero were also sitting near her on the other sides of Shizen. Jakotsu, Bankotsu and two new people one male and the other female sat near the Jigoku and Shinya. As there group neared her they heard what Rihatsu was asking.

"Come on Kagome…Please…" Rihatsu begged, "It's just one song…" His ears were plastered to his head and his eyes watery and big, his mouth pouting.

Kagome gave in.

"Fine, Kit. Which one?" Kagome asked completely ignoring the new group.

"Forget Me Not…" Kagome paused and looked at him. He was eager to hear her sing so she gave in and glanced at the two `new people' Sango and Miroku.

Sango with her long brown hair and eyes and Miroku with his short black hair in a dragon's tail with violet eyes. They were both married and had just returned from there honeymoon. Forget me not was the song Kagome sang at the wedding. It was from Sango to Miroku just as it was from Miroku to Sango.

*Forget me not

Baby Baby

As I rock you gently

Right here in my arms

I promise to always

Be here for you

Keep you safe and warm

Sometimes in the middle of the night

I wake up cryin' when I think of how long

It took to find you

And now that I have I won't be movin' on

Nothing can ever separate us

We know where we belong

All I'm asking you

All I'm asking

Before this moment's gone

Forget me not

Don't forget what we got

Every day is surely but a dream

I found the sweetest of all things

For all my life

You'll be my light

With every beat that's in your heart

Oh baby please remember to

Forget me not

Time is funny

Time can fly

That's one thing for sure

I'll wake tomorrow

Blink my eyes

See you standin' at that door

And I'll be lookin' at you

See the wonder of what love can be

Someday I might have to let you go

And that's just so hard to believe

And if I do you'll know just

How much you mean to me

And all I'll ask of you

All I'll ask you

Before I set you free

Forget me not

Don't forget what we got

Everyday is surely but a dream

I found the sweetest of all things

For all my life

You'll be my light

With every beat that's in your heart

Oh baby please remember to

Forget me not

(Just remem-remember to forget me)

(Forget me not forget me)

Before I set you free yeah

Forget me not (Oh baby don't you dare forget me)

Don't forget what we got (don't forget forget what we got)

Every day is surely but a dream

I found the sweetest of all things

Forever more (remember me as a soul connection)

I'll thee adore (somebody who lit up the day)

With every beat that's in your hear (every beat that's in my heart)

Oh baby please remember to (Baby please forget me not)

Forget me not

Don't forget what we got

With every beat that's in your heart

Oh baby please remember to

Forget me not*

As the song ended Rihatsu was fast asleep in Kagome's lap and Jigoku as well as Shiny were purring in pleasure. Jakotsu and Bankotsu were fast asleep against each other. Sango and Miroku had tender smiles on there faces. Shizen, Hitaru and Kazero were relaxed. Shizen had his head on Kagome's lap next to Rihatsu, Kazero and Hitaru were curled up next to her legs. Shinya was still at her side gripping her waist Jigoku laid his head on her shoulder.

The other `eavesdroppers' were basically in awe except for those that have heard that before. Everyone was indeed a bit more relaxed then before. Kagome turned to them and the tender smile on her face was quickly replaced with a bored expression and raised eyebrow. She kept her body relaxed as it was being used as a cuddle toy and pillow at the moment. She did not want to disturb them.

"Yes?" Kagome inquired quietly.

"I need to speak with you." Koenma said just as softly.

Kagome nodded her head.

"I will meet you in the council room in a little while; I will bring Shizen and the others then. Sesshoumaru will show you the way." Kagome said before turning back to her other friends that were still cuddling to her. She sighed as the other group left with Sesshoumaru.

`I wonder what he needs to speak with me about.' Kagome thought to herself before gently lapping at Jigoku's face to get him up. `Probably Naraku…'

A/n: sorry this chapter took kind of long to get out. I was sick…again. Still am. I hope to get a new chapter out soon. Hope that you liked it!
