Chapter Three
- Five years later-
Akito-kun,
I just got my black belt in Karate today. I was the best in the class after moving to Nagasaki. My sensei says that I have great potential. I wish I had known I could have done this when I was still living with Kyo and Yuki. Every time they spoke of their fighting, I was so in the dark. I’m starting a restaurant: The Thirteen Stars. Fitting, no? If you are well enough, I would like it for you came and tried it. Of all the juunishi I’ve never cooked for you. Oh but perhaps you can’t because of Hatori-kun...Send my love to the others.
Love,
Tohru
Tohru-kun,
I would love to have you cook for me, but as you said, I can’t. And a black belt in Karate? I’m very proud. I’m sure that Kyo and the others would be too. I can’t believe that it’s been five years since the day we made our deal. I would never have expected to become...dare I say it, friends with you. Yuki just graduated from a university of accounting, and Kyo just graduated from a university in medicine, he’s now apprenticed to Hatori. Momiji, Kagura, Hatsuharu, Kureno, Kisa, Hiro and everyone all miss you very much. Unfortunately I can’t make our correspondence known, they are angry enough as it is. Hatori is here, so I must depart. Until your next letter, Tohru-kun.
Love,
Akito
-
Tohru put down her latest letter to Akito. She smiled, getting ready for work. Akito wasn’t half bad once you got to know him, she found out. He had a dark side, and a light side, almost like Ha-kun. It was part of his curse.
She got into her car and drove off to work, they had to set up the menus for the day.
“Hide!!” shouted Tohru when she walked through the door. “Hide, are you in yet?”
“Tohru! I was thinking about the menus. How about o-inari-san for the special today?”
Tohru smirked, “sounds like a plan. Inari would like that.”
Keitaro the second chef walked in, “o-inari-san?” The two women nodded, “I approve. Shall we my beautiful co-cook?” he asked with a flourish.
“You’re so dramatic, Kei. You remind me of someone I once knew...” she smiled thinking about Ayame-san.
“Is that a good thing?”
“His brother wouldn’t say so.” Together they laughed, and started up to the stoves and ovens. “We open in an hour Kei-kun, start getting those rolls ready.”
“Slave driver!”
“Lazy-ass!” she shot back.
-
Kazuma lightly touched Kyo’s fever ridden head. “I’m sorry, my son...I wish I could tell you that Tohru lives in Nagasaki...You need to rest...she wouldn’t like it that you were like this. She’s always watching over you, Kyo.”
Kyo opened his eyes after Kazuma left. Tohru was in Nagasaki. He got out of bed, slid his shoes on and leapt out the window, ignoring his pounding head. Tokyo wasn’t too far away and with his limited funds he got on the train and leaned on the seat heavily. “Young man, are you all right?” asked a old woman.
“Yeah...I’m just sick...” he mumbled.
“Then what are you doing on this train? You should be at home, resting.”
Kyo glared, “I’m going to see someone very important to me. She left a long time ago and now I’m going to get her back.”
The old woman smiled, “that’s admirable, young man. Did you love her?”
He nodded, “yes I did.”
“You are a brave young man. Your girl should be proud.”
“I guess so..” Kyo closed his eyes, exhausted. “Could you wake me when we get to Nagasaki?”
“Of course young man.”
Kyo drifted off, the rattling of the train soothing him instead of disrupting him. Slowly Kyo became aware of the woman shaking him. He muttered a thanks and stumbled off the train. He was in Nagasaki and had no idea where to go from there.
The small orange cat crept into the open window of the blue honda. Shivering, he curled into a ball, trying to get warm. His fever took over and he passed out, still in cat form. When he woke up, there was a gray sweater on him and the car was moving.
He meowed angrily, when he realized he couldn’t open his eyes. Whatever he was sick with, it was getting worse. “Silly kitty,” said a voice. “Going out in the cold. Don’t worry about a thing, I’ll take you home.”
Kyo meowed again, and drifted off, it would do him no good to speak to a stranger.
-
Tohru lifted the orange cat into her arms and held the mail between her teeth as she unlocked her large expansive home. The cat shifted in her arms restlessly. “I think I’ll name you Kyo..” she smiled. “You remind me so much of him.”
She placed the cat in a cat basket that she had from her last cat and she placed the mail on the table. There was a letter from Akito there and she resolved to read it before bed. She made herself some tea, warming some milk for her new cat.
She sat on the floor by the basket, stroking the small orange head. Unbidden, tears poured from her eyes, remembering a similar cat. She felt the cat moving under her hand and she left the room so as not to frighten him.
Kyo opened his eyes and latched on to the milk. He lapped it up quickly, trying to see around him. Everything was so much bigger when he was a cat. He wandered around trying to find the kind soul who took him home. He saw someone sitting on a bed, reading a letter.
Tohru-kun,
KYO DISOBEYED ME. HE RAN AWAY. No one has heard from him in days. He was ill and he ran away. I haven’t treated him badly, why is my juunishi leaving? I’m sorry to dump this on you my Tohru... I will send you another letter when we find Kyo so you do not worry. Please don’t worry.
Akito.
In shock Tohru looked up and saw her orange cat in the door way. Kyo would have transformed if wasn’t all ready. “Kyo?” she whispered.
