Chapter Two

Twisting a dark lock of hair around one finger, she knocked on the dojo’s door. A man Tohru had never seen before answered her call. “Hai?”

“Is Kazuma-dono in?” she whispered.

“Hai. He’s with Sohma Kyo, shall I get them?”

“No! Please don’t. Just give him this.” She fished out a letter. “And don’t tell Kyo-kun.”

“Sure, he took the letter. “Are you all right miss?”

“Iie...No, I’m sorry. I have to go. Please. Help me.” She turned and bolted down the path. Once she had vanished, he walked back into the dojo.

“Sensei...this came for you.”

Kazuma frowned, “is everything all right?”

“I..I’m not sure.” He handed Kazuma the letter. Dietatsu looked over at Kyo. He looked worse for the wear. Was the girl at the door his girlfriend?

Kazuma’s eyes went impossibly wide. The letter spoke volumes of Kyo’s pain.

Kazuma-dono,

Please keep this under the utmost secrecy. I’m sure by now you know of my ‘mysterious’ disappearance. This is my new address. Please come tomorrow. I have something I wish to speak to you about.

Yours,
Honda Tohru

“Is...everything all right shishou?”

Kazuma nodded, “hai. Everything’s fine.”

-

Kazuma knocked on the door to the small house. Tohru opened it a moment later. “Kazuma-dono!” she breathed, throwing her arms around him. “Thank goodness you came!”

Startled, Kazuma hugged her, feeling how frail she was. “Honda-san...Akito told me of your promise. Why are you doing this?”

“Kyo...” she looked up, “I’m doing this for Kyo. I promised Akito that I would stay away if he didn’t cage Kyo...I don’t trust him, Kazuma-dono...I’m not strong enough. Teach me.”

“Teach you what, Honda-san?”

“To fight. If you come and teach me everyday, I’ll cook you lunch or dinner or anything! And please...tell me if Akito tries anything.”

Kazuma nodded, “of course.”

She breathed a sigh of relief, letting him in. “...Sensei?” she whispered a moment later. “How is Kyo?”

The grey eyes of the dojo-master regarded her cooly. “He is not well.”

Her eyes filled with tears, “I never wanted to hurt him.”

“Despite your best intentions...”

“I didn’t want to leave!” Tohru glared at him in an uncharacteristic display of anger. “I wanted to stay!”

Kazuma smiled, “did you love him?”

“Did?” she looked past her hair. “I do.” At his look of surprise, she said, “everyone expects me to stay some air-head. Even Akito seemed surprised when I called him out. Yes, I love Kyo. Is there a problem?”

Kazuma chuckled, “no. But I think you will be quite easy to train you. We shall begin tomorrow.” He held out a hand, “deal?”

She smiled, “deal.”

-

Honda-san,

I trust that you are well. Everyone misses you, especially my Yuki. I expect that you wish me to get straight to the point. One month gone by and the Cat still free. I believe he expects me to cage him. As his eighteenth birthday has come and gone, he was supposed to be locked away. As is the fate for all cats. But you drive a hard bargain Honda-san. To draw my letter to a close, I expect you to reply back to me.

Yours,

Sohma Akito

Akito-san,

I am glad that you were prompt in your letter to me. I cannot thank you enough for letting Kyo go free. It was difficult to leave them, but not as difficult as you may think. Although I know you won’t, please pass on my congratulations to Kyo on his birthday...I wish I could have been there. Please tell Yuki, Kisa, Haru and everyone that I love them very much. I will miss them. Until your next letter, Akito-san.

Honda Tohru

-

Kyo walked past the doorway to Akito’s room on his way from Hatsuharu’s room. They had been training together for a few weeks now. “Cat,” breathed a voice from the room.

“Akito-san?” he asked, frowning.

“Your Tohru Honda wishes you a happy birthday.”

Kyo stared.
