Fruits Basket Fan Fiction ❯ East Side, West Side ❯ Down With the Sickness ( Chapter 10 )

[ T - Teen: Not suitable for readers under 13 ]
Wow. Chapter ten already. And yet...barely. Alright well...this one is gonna circle a lot around the Okurimonos. It’ll explain something about them that’ll be sort of important in the future. Anyway, I’ve been planning this chapter for a while now and now here it is.

“I didn’t notice how big this house was.” Tohru commented.

“Yeah, we needed it to be pretty big seeing as we have twelve people living here.” Kippei said. He looked around, sensing something was wrong. It was quiet.

Mizuko suddenly walked out of Ariel and Hinako’s room and quickly into the kitchen.

“Agh.” Kippei winced slightly. Now he knew something was wrong.

“Something wrong, Kippei?” Kasumi asked.

Mizuko came out of the kitchen with a bowl of warm water and a small towel.

“Aunt Mizuko,” Kippei called.

“What is it, Kippei?” Mizuko stopped and looked at him.

“What happened?” He asked.

Mizuko sighed. “Ariel has another fever.”

“Again?”

“Sadly.” Mizuko went back into Ariel’s room.

“What do you mean again?” Kyou asked.

“Ariel gets fevers a lot.” Kippei slightly winced.

“Is that bad?” Kasumi blinked.

“They’re fevers, Kasumi.” Yuki reminded.

“Yeah, but...” Kasumi started.

“She’ll be alright. She always is.” Kippei said. He let out a small cough. “I’ll be right back.” He ran into the kitchen.

“I wonder what’s wrong.” Tohru said.

“Ariel and Kippei are linked.” Leo said, walking down the hall.

“What do you mean?” Kasumi blinked.

“When Ariel’s fevers kick in, Kippei kinda...” Leo stopped, trying to find the words to use.

“Kinda what?” Kasumi urged.

“It’s nothing.” Kippei said, walking out of the kitchen. He was holding a small bottle in his hand.

“Kippei, I’d tell them before they find out another way. And I don’t think you’d like to get your little girlfriend here upset.” Leo nodded to Kasumi.

“She’s not my girlfriend!” Kippei yelled. He coughed again and took a sip of the liquid inside the bottle.

“Right...” Leo said sarcastically.

“How’s your heart, Leo?” Kippei glared.

“It’s doing fine. Unlike your lungs and, god-forbid, your cerebrum.” Leo shrugged.

“Will someone please tell us what’s going on?!” Kasumi yelled.

“The book’s in Mizuko’s office.” Leo said and walked away.

“What book?” Tohru asked.

“Follow me.” Kippei sighed. He lead them near the back of the house and into a fairly sized office.

“You guys sure you’re just visiting?” Kyou asked, looking around the office.

“That’s what some of us are hoping.” Kippei said. He went over to the bookshelves and looked at the titles. He picked out a small black covered one without a title.

“What’s that?” Tohru looked at the book.

Kippei opened the book and flipped to the pages near the back. “You wanted to know what was wrong with Kokoro, right?”

“Yeah, are you gonna tell us or not?” Kyou crossed his arms.

Kippei flipped a few more pages and laid the book on the desk. “Read this page.”

Kasumi looked at it. “The Moon?”

“Read it.” Kippei nodded.

“‘The moon rules the emotions, instincts, and the subconscious. It is feminine, nurturing, reflective, and changeable.’” Kasumi recited. “Blah, blah, blah...what does this have to do with Kokoro?”

“Read where it says ‘Correspondences’.” Kippei said.

“‘Principles: the feminine principle, spirit. Day of the Week: Monday. Metal: Silver. Zodiacal Sign:...Cancer.” Kyou read.

“Now skip to the last few listings.” Kippei pointed to a spot on the page.

“Mental Functions: memory, subconscious, instinct, intuition, reflection, dreaming....Malfunctions...” Yuki blinked.
“Read them.” Kippei nodded.

“Psychosis, schizophrenia, lycanthropy.” Tohru blinked.

“What’s psychosis?” Kasumi asked.

Kippei sighed and got another book off the shelves. He opened it up to a page and handed it to Kasumi.

“‘A sever personality disorder in which contact with reality is seriously impaired’?” Kasumi read.

“Yeah.” Kippei nodded. “And you know what schizophrenia is, right?”

“Yeah, so what does this have to do with Kokoro again?” Kyou sighed, getting tired of asking over and over.

“For a few years now, Kokoro’s been developing a sort of case of it.” Kippei explained. “That’s why she wasn’t acting like herself.”

“I see...” Kasumi nodded. “And you and Ariel? How are you two linked?”

Kippei took the black book again and turned to a different page.

“Mars?” Yuki looked at the page.

“The zodiacal signs for Mars are both Aries and Scorpio. That’s how we’re connected.” Kippei said. “Our malfunctions include fevers, inflammation, high blood pressure, and hemorrhage. Ariel has fevers, and when she gets them, my...hemorrhage starts to kick in. Especially in my lungs.”

“Hemorrhage?” Kasumi gasped lightly.

“So you all suffer from malfunctions listed in this book?” Yuki asked.

“Sadly.” Kippei nodded.

“What about the others?” Tohru looked at Kippei.

“I don’t know. Sachiko and Mizuko do though.” Kippei said.

“Don’t you think we should be going now?” Yuki looked to the other three.

“I’ll be right back.” Kasumi said, rushing out of the office.

“Now where is she going?” Kyou blinked.

Kasumi walked back in with a smile on her face.

“Oh no, what’d you do now, Kasumi?” Kyou sighed.

“We’re spending the night here.” Kasumi smirked.

“We’re what?!” Kyou’s eyes widened. He looked almost just like he did when Kasumi announced that she was staying for a couple of months.

“I already called Shigure and he said it was fine. Sachiko said it was fine too.” Kasumi smiled.
“You’re kidding me.” Kyou sighed.

“Nope. I’m Kasumi.”

“Are you sure that’s a good idea?” Yuki looked to Kasumi.

“Kokoro needs some cheering up. So we can all help with that. Then afterwards we can all gather in around and tell ghost stories and play board games. It’ll be tons of fun.” Kasumi nodded.

“It doesn’t sound too bad.” Tohru smiled lightly.

“See? Come on, it’ll be fine. What’s the worst that could happen?” Kasumi shrugged. “It’s not like it’ll be a big problem if we accidentally bump into each other and transform.”

“She has a point.” Kippei agreed.

“I...guess...” Kyou sighed.

“I suppose it wouldn’t be a problem.” Yuki sighed as well.

“Yay!” Kasumi giggled.

And just as he knew he wouldn’t survive two months with his sister, Kyou knew he most likely wouldn’t survive a night in the Okurimono house.
