To Name A Kitten:

Kyo hated the rain.
A lot.
He was so tired that he was on the verge of falling out of the tree he was perched in. The kitten's mewling in the box was the only thing keep him awake.
Kyo was cautiously balanced on a less-than-pleasantly-thin tree branch outside his bedroom window. That damn Rat and that damn Dog were both up and about downstairs, and there was no way that Kyo was going by them with his newfound charges. The only other option was to go straight from the ground to his room. Unfortunately, this was proving very difficult.
Eventually, and without injury, Kyo made it to his room. He closed the window silently, and set the box down onto his futon. The kittens scrambled out, shaking themselves off and tripping over their paws.
Where's the food? A black she-kit asked. You said there was going to be food. Where is it?
Before Kyo could reply to the she-kit's sarcastic tone, one of the other kittens interrupted him. Y-you shouldn't be rude Onee-chan. I'm sure the tom means well. The shy, sweet she-kit looped her tail over her nose in embarrassment.
" It's alright." Kyo sighed. " I'm used to it. Look, I have to go downstairs, okay? I'll be back up in bit."
Whatever. The black she-kit meowed.
Kyo opened up his window and sprang deftly to the ground.

" My, Kyo-kun, you're home late." Tohru greeted him in the foyer.
" Yeah, well, you know what I'm like when the weather gets like this." Kyo grunted, kicking off his Sketchers. He laid his backpack against the wall and straightened up, working out the kinks in his neck.
" Well," Tohru began. " If you know what the weather's like, then maybe you shouldn't go to Shishou-san's (Kazuma) on rainy days."
Kyo blanched, then sighed, too tired to make a traditional comment about beating Yuki one day. So he opted for the easy path instead.
" Do you have any fish an' milk I could take upstairs?"
Tohru nodded her assent, disappearing in the kitchen. Kyo, acting really exauhsted, which wasn't hard, peaked into the living room. Shigure was reading the evening paper on the couch and Yuki was re-re-rereading his chemistry notes.
' Perfect bastard.' Kyo thought.
Tohru came back with a whole salmon, already cut into strips, and a carton of milk. Kyo gratefully thanked her and headed upstairs.

Closing the door behind him, and thankful that it was a weekend, Kyo arrived in time to greet four very hungry kittens.
Hey everybody! The tom's back!
And he's got food!
Fish!
So…hungry…must.. eat!
The kittens dove into their meal with vigor. Kyo chuckled quietly to himself at their antics.
" So," He began when they had all finished eating, Kyo included. " My name's Kyo. Kyo Sohma."
Oooer.
" Yeah. Do you guys have names?"
Yeah, we do. But we don't have people names.
She's right. You know, stuff like Ratkiller, Amberpelt, Ashfrost, or Whitepaw.
Will you give us people names?
Hey! I LIKE the name Whitepaw.
Well, too bad.
" I like the Ratkiller part." Kyo snickered, wondering if he could train these kittens to beat Yuki for him. " Right, anyho- step forward one at a time and I'll give you all people names."
Okay!
The sarcastic, black she-kit came forward first. She was black from ears to tail, with rosin-red eyes.
Do, your, worst.
" Midnight."
I knew it. SO stereotypical. At least it's a COOL name. The newfound Midnight stalked away in a huff, and eavesdropped from the corner.
Next, the shy and sweet she-kit came forward. She was also black, but longhaired, unlike her sister. Her eyes were a pale grey, and even her nose was black. Her tail poofed up from embarrassment, the tom's intense gaze made her feel very un-ladycatlike.
I-I'm ready.
" Raven."
Ooooer
Raven pounced on Midnight from behind, startling her sister out of her reverie. I've got such a pretty name!
Whatever. Midnight meowed.
Next, the tom-kitten formerly called Whitepaw stepped up to Kyo. He had red eyes, medium-hair, and a stark-white pelt. He dipped his head in respect to Kyo, acknowledging him as the senior Cat.
Any ideas?
" Hmmm.." Kyo thought. " Gabriel."
Thank you. Gabriel meowed in reply, ambling over to Midnight. He nudged Raven away, and sat mewing softly with the red-eyed she-kit.
The last kitten was a beautiful, sleek Siamese she-kit. She was a black-point Siamese, with medium hair and startling blue eyes. Her long tail was wrapped around her paws and regarded Kyo as if she was the one naming him.
Well?
" Ryoko."
Isn't that wonderful? Raven mewed, bounding over to her other sister. I just adore your name!
Well, I adore it too. It suits me. Ryoko meowed back, giving Raven's ear a quick lick. Much better than Ashfrost, anyway.
Kyo watched as the kittens settled themselves around his room. But eventually, the loneliness got to them, and they all curled up on one of Kyo's extra pillows. That night, the sound of five purring Cats could be heard under the door.
