Frozen In The Snow
Chapter Four: Heartbroken
By: Demon Priestess Saturn
Kyo paced around nervously in Shigure's living room. He had been waiting for Tohru to wake up for an hour now. It was quiet and dark in the house, which gave it a slight eerie feeling. The house had been like this for two years now. Since the day Haru was hit by a truck. Kyo continued to pace around endlessly thinking about what he was about to talk to Tohru about. Haru was also on his mind he had remained in his coma till this day and everyday since then Yuki had been going everyday to see him. Kyo thought it was a kind of sad. Not only did Yuki break down completely after he saw Haru in the hospital bed, which surprised him a lot because up until then he had never seen Yuki cry. Yuki also hadn't seemed happy at all since then. It was bad enough to the point where Kyo was starting to notice because Tohru kept getting upset recently. Kyo figured it was because of Yuki's attitude. He barely would talk to any of them let alone express to any of them how he had been feeling for the past two years. Kyo stopped pacing a sighed. For the first time in his life he had begun to realize how hurt Yuki actually was and for some reason he cared. Was it because Haru wasn't there to take care of him anymore? Or had it always been like that? Kyo wasn't sure anymore all he knew is it had been eating at him for months now. Kyo sat down on the couch and jumped as he heard someone come down the stairs. He turned to see Yuki looking down and him with the same sad expression on his face.
“What are you doing up?” Yuki asked calmly.
“I could ask you the same thing.” Kyo raised a brow. Yuki never got up this early in the morning.
“I went to bed early last night.” Yuki glared.
“Sorry I didn't mean to upset you.” Kyo looked away from him. He was getting slightly annoyed. Yuki stared at him for a moment and then opened his mouth to say something but still said nothing. He closed his mouth and continued down the stairs and walked into the kitchen. Kyo glanced back over at him as he disappeared around the corner and sighed. He really should learn to control his temper. “Damn it.” Kyo stood up and walked into the kitchen. Yuki was pulling a plate out of the cabinet and set it down on the counter. “Can we talk?” Kyo said quietly. Yuki sighed heavily and turned to face him. Yuki leaned back against the counter and gave him a slightly annoyed look.
“What?” Yuki waited patiently.
“Is this about me or is this about Haru?” Kyo folded his arms.
“What are you talking about?”
“The way you've been acting lately. Look I know your upset and I just… I don't know. I just wish you would tell someone what's bothering you.” Kyo looked at the floor.
“Heh.” Yuki laughed a little. “Nothing's wrong with me and what do you care for anyway.” Yuki turned away from him and started messing with the rice cooker.
“Here… Let me do it.” Kyo walked over and started making some rice balls.
“Why do you have to be such a show off?” Yuki snapped.
“I'm not being a show off. I'm trying to help.” Kyo looked at him. Yuki just glared back and him and turned and sat down at the table.
“I wish you would trust me.” Kyo muttered almost to himself.
“Are you still assuming something's wrong you stupid cat?” Yuki snapped coldly.
“There is something wrong with you!” Kyo snapped back. “I know you're in pain. Why wont you talk to me? Or at least Tohru.”
“Maybe because she's you're woman and that would be intruding into your territory.” Yuki stood up and slammed his hands on the table.
“You make it sound like I treat her like a possession.” Kyo glared.
“Maybe it's because you do.” Yuki walked out of the kitchen. Kyo sighed and looked back at the rice ball in his hand.
“Well that didn't go well at all.” Kyo mumbled.
“Kyo…” Tohru said as she walked into the kitchen.
“Morning sweetie.” Kyo looked over and smiled at her.
“Did you and Yuki have a fight?” Tohru asked with a worried expression on her face.
“Yeah we did.” Kyo said calmly. “I tried to get him to talk to me and he blew up at me.”
“Oh.” Tohru looked back in the direction of the kitchen door.
………………….
Yuki walked past Tohru as she came down the stairs and out the front door. Yuki grumbled to himself as he sat down on the porch and rested his head on one of his knees. Kyo had no idea what he was going through. Kyo could never understand he was too stupid and happy with his damn life. And why should he care anyway? Yuki sat there for a long time before he heard one of the doors slide open. He glanced over to see Shigure stepping out on to the porch. He wore his usual loose gray kimono with a dark blue belt around his waist. His brown almost black eyes shined with enthusiasm and as usual he had that stupid smile on his face.
“You're up earlier this morning. Are you not feeling well?” Shigure asked as he looked down at him.
“I could say the same thing about you.” Yuki grumbled.
“Actually you can't cos you see I never went to bed so that doesn't qualify as getting up early.” Shigure smiled brightly and tossed his semi long black hair from side to side. Yuki sighed.
“When are you going to get a normal sleep schedule?” Yuki looked fairly annoyed.
“Normal sleep schedules are for doctors.” Shigure smiled.
“Was that supposed to be a joke?” Yuki put his hand to his head.
“So were you going to see Haru this morning? Is that why you're up on your day off?” Shigure frowned slightly.
“Have you heard any news from Hatori on his condition?” Yuki looked up at him.
“No nothing. So I assume it hasn't changed.”
“Okay.” Yuki stared at the ground and his frown deepened.
“Well I'm going to get some breakfast and you should too. It makes the day better.” Shigure sang as he walked back into the house. Yuki sighed and pushed himself up off the ground. Yuki walked back into the house and went to walk into the kitchen. Just before he did Kyo caught his attention. Tohru was sitting in one of the chairs and Kyo was leaning down in front of her. Yuki quickly moved out of sight and leaned against the wall.
“Tohru you see what I've been trying to ask you for a couple of days now is… Will you marry me?” Kyo held up the engagement ring.
“Oh my goss… Kyo… I don't know what to say.” Tohru was flustered and then she smiled. “Yes I'll marry you.” She hugged him and he turned into an orange cat. “Oh Kyo! I'm sorry…”
“It's okay.” Kyo for once wasn't mad at being turned. In fact Kyo was shocked at how well it went considering what happened when he spoke to Tohru's grandpa.
~Flashback~
“I would like to marry your granddaughter.” Kyo bowed in front of Tohru's grandpa.
“Well if it's okay with her. I mean her husband did die recently and I'm not sure Kyoko is ready for another long-term relationship.” Tohru's grandpa smiled at him.
“Tohru! Not Kyoko. Tohru.” Kyo said getting slightly annoyed.
“You don't want to marry my daughter?” Tohru's grandpa said.
“I want to marry Tohru. You're granddaughter not your daughter.” Kyo corrected him.
“Oh so you don't want to marry Kyoko then why are you asking if you can?” Grandpa asked.
~End Flashback~
“Yeah that was a nightmare. After another hour he still didn't get it. So I just took it as a yes and gave up.” Kyo thought to himself. Yuki stared at the ground letting his bangs hide his face. That was about as much as he could take. Shigure walked up and the smile immediately disappeared from his face.
“Yuki?” Shigure asked. Yuki pushed past him and walked out the door. Tohru walked out of the kitchen holding Kyo in her arms and frowned. The worry came back into her eyes.
“Yuki…” Tohru said to herself.
………………….
Yuki walked down the street in the direction of the hospital. How could this have happened? Why wasn't he over her yet? Part of him must have felt he still had a chance. As he crossed the street where Haru had been hit he vaguely noticed and girl with short brown hair talking with someone on the street. As he went to walk past the girl she turned and smacked right into him. Yuki jumped in surprise and caught the girl before she fell into the street. And for some reason he hadn't transformed.
“Are you okay?” The boy she was talking to asked.
“I'm fine.” Yuki sounded a little confused.
“Ouch.” The girl said as she looked up at Yuki with her big gray eyes. “Yuki?”
“Well that explains it.” Yuki sighed as he let go of the girl.
“You okay Kagura?” The boy asked calmly.
“Yeah I'm fine.” Kagura smiled at him. “Yuki what are you doing here?”
“I was going to see Haru.” Yuki was almost whispering.
“You know him?” The boy looked between them.
“Yeah he's my cousin.” Kagura smiled.
“Wow… Small world I guess. Oh man! I have to go or I'm going to be late. See ya!” The boy ran down the street.
“Who was that?” Yuki decided to ask.
“A friend from college.” Kagura replied. “So you were heading over to see Haru? Want to walk with me? I was going there myself.”
“Sure.” Yuki said solemnly.
“Cool.” Kagura bent over and picked up the bouquet of roses she dropped on the sidewalk. As they walked down the street towards the hospital Yuki didn't say anything so Kagura decided to light the mood. “So what's up?”
“Nothing.” Yuki lied.
“Well something. You look really upset.” Kagura looked worried.
“Kagura… Do you know what's been up with Kyo lately?” Yuki looked at her.
“No. I haven't seen him for a long time. I've been too busy. And for a while he wasn't home when I came to visit so I haven't talked with him much.” Kagura said as she looked down at the roses. “I planned to go see him this afternoon.”
“Oh.” Yuki looked at the ground and he looked even more upset.
“What is it?” Kagura looked over at him.
“I'll tell you in a minute.” Yuki said as they walked up to the hospital. They walked into the large white five-story building, Yuki lead the way down the large white halls until they reached a room at the end. Yuki opened the door and stepped into the room.
“Hey Yuki!” Momiji waved.
“Momiji?” Yuki looked confused as Kagura walked in the door. Hatori stood over Haru, who lay in his hospital bed with his eyes closed. Hatori seemed to be checking his vitals or something. Yuki couldn't really tell.
“Hi Momiji. Hi Hatori.” Kagura smiled as she set her orange kitty backpack on the ground.
“Yuki. Kagura.” Hatori nodded to them.
“Has anything changed?” Yuki asked.
“No.” Hatori shook his head.
“Hi Haru.” Kagura walked over to the other side of the bed and looked down at him.
“We'll let you too visit. Come on Momiji.” Hatori said as he turned and walked out of the room.
“Okay! Bye.” Momiji smiled happily and waved at Yuki and Kagura. Yuki shut the door behind them and looked back at Kagura.
“I miss his voice.” Kagura said suddenly. “In fact I miss everything he did.”
“Me too.” Yuki said as he glanced at Haru.
“So what were you going to tell me?” Kagura looked at Yuki.
“Well… Did you know Kyo has been seeing someone for two years now?” Yuki looked at her.
“He has?” Kagura stared into Yuki's purple eyes. Was he joking?
“Kyo's been dating Tohru for two years now. And… He asked her to marry him this morning. I'm sorry you had to find this out from me. But you needed to know.” Yuki kept his eyes fixed on Kagura. She stared blankly back and him for a moment then she smiled sadly.
“That's great. I'm glad he's happy.” Kagura seemed to be fighting back tears. She continued to smile and her voice sounded slightly shaky. Yuki knew she was heartbroken but he wasn't going to say anything. Because something's were better left unsaid. “If that's what he wants then he should have what he wants. That's all that's important is that he's happy.”
“Yeah.” Yuki looked at the ground. “I guess you're right.”
“Are you okay?” Kagura frowned.
“I'm just conflicted is all. It's nothing to worry about.” Yuki sat down in a chair. Kagura stood up and walked over to him. She hugged him tightly. Yuki looked surprised for a moment and then hugged her back.
“It's okay. I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings. I know how you feel about Tohru. I understand.” Kagura said calmly. Yuki said nothing all he did was hug her back because for some reason it made him feel better. Which was something he hadn't felt like in two years. Kagura pulled away from him and smiled sadly again. “If you need someone to talk to I'll be here. Okay?”
“Okay.” Yuki nodded and looked up at her. It was not only breaking his heart to see her pretending like nothing was wrong but also the whole thing with Tohru was breaking his heart. And why he took Kagura's offer he didn't know. Is it because he felt bad? Or was it because he needed someone to talk to?
“I need to go. I have some other things I need to do today. I'm sorry I can't stay longer today.” Kagura looked at Haru. She then looked back at Yuki and picked up her little orange kitty backpack. She patted down her short green dress and fixed her black tights and her little tan boots. She smiled again softly. She walked over to the door and opened it as she walked through the door she looked back at Yuki. “Oh Isuzu said she might be coming over to see him today. If you run into her please try not to fight.”
“Hopefully I'll be gone.” Yuki said. “But I'll try.”
“Thanks.” Kagura smiled and disappeared out the door. Yuki looked back and Haru and frowned.
“Haru…” Yuki stared sadly back at him. “I miss you so much. You need to come back. Don't leave me here all alone.”
………………….
A white rice ball with flat eyes and a triangular mouth goes slowly by the screen in a red sparkly dress.
“I'm so excited! And I just can't hide it! Oh I'm about to loose control and I think I like it!” The rice ball looks angry suddenly. “What! Can't a rice ball dance in piece? I'd like to see you copy these moves. What? You think your better huh?” The rice ball jumps at the screen and hits it with a fan. “Take that! Now I'd like to see you make fun of my singing and dancing bitch.” The rice ball starts walking off the screen again. “I want to love you. Tease you. Beat you up with a fan. And when I say fan I mean literally.” The rice ball disappears off the screen.
