Frozen In The Snow

Chapter Five: Breaking Free Of The Pain
By: Demon Priestess Saturn

Yuki came home that night feeling exhausted and upset. The day had really run him down. He hadn't seen Isuzu at the hospital and it had started raining outside. He groaned as he walked into the warm house and sighed. He glanced around the living room and realized it was eerily quiet in the house. That's when he remembered the event earlier in the day. He frowned and walked farther into the sitting room. He glanced over at the coat rack and noticed a long black jacket hanging perfectly alongside another black coat. Yuki glared knowing exactly whom the jacket's belonged to. But why were Hatori and Momiji doing here at this time of night?

“Yuki?” He quickly looked over to see Tohru walking down the stairs with a worried expression on her face. Yuki stared back at her fighting his emotions. He wanted to say something, anything. But the words refused to come. “Are you okay?” She walked over to him. “I've been worried all day about you.”
“I'm fine Miss Honda.” Was all the little rat could muster.
“Are you sure? You were so upset earlier.” Tohru's face became more worried.
“Really I'm okay. What's Hatori doing here?” Yuki lied to her again.
“Hatori brought Akito over because he wanted to see you and Shigure.” Tohru said calmly.
“Akito.” Yuki frowned as the realization hit him. Aside from not wanting to deal with Isuzu, he really had no patience for Akito today either. Not that Isuzu herself was a bad person she just pretended to be.
“They're in the kitchen talking.” Tohru noticed how pale he had turned at the mention of Akito.
“Where's Kyo?” Yuki asked.
“He's hiding in his room. He said something about he didn't want Akito to find something out.” Tohru looked confused. Yuki leaned forward till his lips were next to her ear.
“Miss Honda. Whatever you do don't tell Akito you and Kyo are planning to get married.” Yuki whispered. Tohru frowned, she was afraid that Yuki had heard the conversation. She felt a stabbing pain of guilt but she tried to hide it.
“Why... Won't he be happy to hear it?” Tohru asked. Yuki stared at her with a sad distant look, which made her want to hug him tightly. But she refused the urge.
“No he wouldn't.” Yuki said.
“But why not?” Tohru continued to wonder.
“Don't pay any mind to it Tohru just don't say anything. Promise me you wont.” Yuki was begging. Tohru smiled brightly.
“I promise.” She smiled.
“Good.” Yuki gave her a fake smile and walked past her and into the kitchen. Tohru frowned and followed him with her eyes. `What happened to that genuine smile he used to give me?' She wondered. She felt pained, Yuki was acting so strange and she felt like she needed to help but she couldn't at the same time.

......................

Yuki walked into the kitchen ready to face his fate. He first spotted Hatori of to his left as he walked past the door. Shigure looked over and smiled at him. Akito, who seemed to always know when he was present, stopped staring out the window and turned around. He smiled his sadistic evil smile and outstretched his arms.

“Yuki.” Akito walked over to him. “How are you?”
“I'm well Akito.” Yuki said with a cold tone. For some reason he felt like Akito had no hold on him. Though for the past two years he was slowly starting to feel that way. He stood sternly and faced Akito with a high head, which was something that he had never done before.
“Leave us. I want to speak to Yuki alone.” Akito ordered. Hatori nodded and left the kitchen. Shigure glanced for a moment and then happily bounced out. Akito looked back at Yuki and smiled again. “Are you wondering why I am here?”
“Is it because I never come to see you?” Yuki said trying to hide the sarcasm in his voice.
“That is one reason but it isn't the reason I came today.” Akito said as he leaned against the counter. “The reason I came is because Hatori has been saying you seem more upset then usual.”
“Did he.” Yuki glared coldly. “What on earth gave him that idea?” Yuki felt like he could kill Hatori at that exact moment.
“I don't know maybe because Tohru choose that cat over you the day she saw his true form. She never really accepted you did she?” Akito taunted.
“Shut up.” Yuki's eyes flashed. Akito stopped leaning against the counter and stared in curiosity. He cocked his head to the side and decided to press the subject further.
“What's the matter? Did I strike a nerve?” Akito's eyes went down to cat slits as he walked over to Yuki.
“No. I'm just tired.” Yuki said with a little bit of annoyance in his voice.
“So that is what's bothering my little rat. Didn't I tell you she would never accept you? I told you no one would ever accept you.” Akito placed his hand on Yuki's cheek and looked into his purple eyes. Yuki's fear arose suddenly and his eyes went wide. Akito smiled and leaned forward to whisper in his ear. “I'd hate to be Tohru when Kyo gets locked in the kitty house. I'm sure it will break her little heart. But that doesn't matter. She deserves everything she gets for getting involved with this family.”
“Stop it! Don't talk about her like that!” Yuki suddenly yelled and pushed Akito back. Fury flashed in Akito's black eyes.
“Remember your place rat.” Akito snapped. “Or I might have to lock you in that room as punishment.”
“Go ahead.” Yuki snapped. “It doesn't matter because your just a pawn anyway Akito.”
“A pawn?” Akito looked curiously at him.
“So tell me Akito. How did Haru end up in his coma?” Yuki glared. He was furious and for some reason he didn't feel the need to hold back.
“Hatori already told you. He probably tried to commit suicide again. Well actually maybe he did.” Akito grinned from ear to ear.
“Mark my words I will find out what happened. Even if it's the last thing I do Akito.” Yuki glared and stormed out of the kitchen. He didn't care how mad he made Akito. In fact he had just realized how resentful he was to Akito. Not only that he apparently blamed Akito for Haru's condition. Even though it made no sense to. Yuki walked back into the living room and stopped in his tracks.
“Hi Yuki.” Kagura waved sadly at him from over by the door.
“Kagura?” Yuki felt a pang of guilt. Akito walked up and stopped just behind Yuki.
“Akito san... What are you doing here?” Kagura said politely.
“Visiting.” Akito frowned at her.
“She came to see Kyo.” Shigure smiled.
“To see that foolish cat? What for?” Akito looked away disgusted with both Kyo and Kagura. Kagura looked at the floor and Yuki glared at Akito.
“He's upstairs in his room.” Yuki looked back at Kagura.
“Thank you. Yuki kun.” Kagura smiled that sad smile and disappeared upstairs. Tohru fidgeted while sitting on the floor next to the table and Hatori was leaning against the wall.
“Hello Akito san.” Tohru said nervously. She had remembered what Yuki said and she was afraid of spitting it out by accident. Akito ignored her but took note to her strange behavior.
“So will you be leaving soon? Or should I have Tohru prepare us dinner?” Shigure asked brightly.
“She is not your slave Shigure.” Yuki glared at him.
“Oh right! Dinner!” Tohru jumped up and ran into the kitchen.
“Were leaving now.” Akito said coldly as he walked over to the door. Hatori grabbed his coat off the coat hanger along with Akito's and walked out the door. Akito looked back at Yuki smirking one last time before he also walked out the door.
“It sounded like your talk didn't go well.” Shigure frowned and looked over at Yuki.
“It took you this long to figure it out.” Yuki snapped and walked upstairs. Tohru stepped out of the kitchen for a moment and looked up the stairs. She glanced back at Shigure with a look of absolute worry.
“I am so worried Shigure. Tell me he's going to be okay.” Tohru stared at Shigure.
“I'm afraid I can't answer that Tohru.” Shigure frowned as he too glanced up the stairs.

......................

Kagura stood in front of Kyo's door. She raised her hand slowly and held her breath. She really needed to talk with Kyo but she couldn't bring herself to knock on the door. She lowered her hand and sighed. She stared at the door for a long time. Thinking to herself about the past and what she was going to say about the current situation. Kyo after all was her first love and her best friend, even if he didn't feel the same way. She was hesitant, she didn't want to say goodbye. In fact she felt as though she was going to collapse. Finally after a few minutes she raised her hand and jumped. The door opened and Kyo stood in front of her with a shocked expression on his face.

“Kagura?” Kyo blinked blankly for a moment. She had frightened him too.
“Kyo... Can we...” Kagura glanced down the hall hearing someone come up the stairs. Yuki came walking up and stairs still huffing about Shigure. He glanced over at both Kyo and Kagura.
“Oh... I'm sorry.” Yuki felt bad suddenly.
“Hey. You alright?” Kyo asked suddenly. Kagura looked up at him and almost smiled. Was he really asking how Yuki was feeling?
“I'm fine.” Yuki glared. Kyo being nice to him was frustrating him even more. He wanted to hurt Kyo or at least get him away from him. He was mad about loosing Tohru. But the more he stared at Kyo's worried eyes the more he felt calm. Then his mind wondered back to what Akito had told him. What did happen to the former cats in the zodiac? He never bothered to find out. What did Akito mean that it would break Tohru's heart? “Kyo...” Yuki wanted to ask.
“Yeah.” Kyo brightened up suddenly.
“Never mind... Kagura needs to talk to you.” Yuki said as he walked past both of them and went into his room. Kyo looked back at Kagura and Kagura looked back at him.
“I... I just wanted to say goodbye.” Kagura said softly with a sad smile.
“What do you mean goodbye?” Kyo looked curiously at her.
“Yuki told me about you and Tohru. I'm happy for both of you. So I just wanted to say goodbye.” Kagura looked at the ground. Kyo felt a stabbing pain in his chest. Like he had just killed his best friend. He wasn't even sure why he felt that way. Was it because he didn't tell her about his relationship? Or was it because of something else? He stared back at Kagura's weak form. He almost wanted to reach out and hug her. In fact he did. She always acted so strong and now she looked like a broken rag doll. “So yeah… Good bye Kyo.” And that was it. She smiled at him again before she turned and walked down the stairs. Kyo stared after her for a moment with a frown on his face. He looked down and his hands and thought `what have I done?'
“Kyo?” He jumped and looked over at Tohru. She was standing at the top of the stairs holding a little tray of food. “Are you going to go downstairs to eat?” She smiled brightly.
“Oh… Yeah.” He smiled sadly at her.
“Is something wrong?” Tohru asked.
“No I'm fine. What's the food for?” Kyo decided to ask.
“I'm taking it to Yuki kun because he got a little mad earlier. So I want to make sure he eats even if he doesn't come downstairs.” Tohru smiled. “Oh… I can bring your food up if you don't want…”
“It's okay I'll go get it.” Kyo seemed slightly annoyed.
“Okay.” Tohru looked down at the floor as Kyo walked past her and went downstairs. Tohru sighed slightly and walked over to Yuki's door. “Yuki kun!”
“Yeah?” Yuki opened the door and looked shocked for a moment.
“I brought you up some food because I thought maybe you wanted to stay up here.” Tohru smiled brightly.
“Thank you.” Yuki took the tray in his hands and walked back into his room. He set the tray on the table and looked back at her.
“Are you sure your feeling well Yuki kun?” Tohru asked.
“I'm fine Miss Honda.” Yuki looked at her and smiled.
“Okay… Then I guess I should…”
“Can I talk to you?” Yuki cut her off without meaning to.
“Sure.” Tohru brightened up. She was always happy to talk to Yuki.
“Is it true? That Kyo is going to be locked away?” Yuki looked at her shifting a little uncomfortably. Tohru sat down on the bed a frown coming to her face.
“Yeah... After he turns eighteen he's going to be locked in isolation for the rest of his life. I was told that happens to all the cats in the family. I think it's sad.” Tohru said as she looked at her hands. “I'm trying to find another way to change Kyo's fate but it's not working. And he doesn't have much time left. His birthday is coming up soon.”
“Why wasn't I told this?” Yuki looked at the floor. He had no idea why Kyo was acting the way he was. In fact he never bothered to ask Kyo. Yuki remembered back to his childhood and how he was locked away in isolation most of his life. It wasn't a fun place to be and he certainly didn't wish it on anyone else. Not even Kyo.
“I don't know. Kyo thought you wouldn't care.” Tohru looked at him.
“That's not true. I do care about that.” Yuki sounded slightly upset.
“Oh no! I upset you I'm sorry!” Tohru started to flip.
“Tohru…” Tohru stopped dead. Her heart had skipped a beat. Yuki had called her by her name. He never called her by her name. “When you say change his fate another way. Does that mean there is a way?”
“Yeah there is. Kyo told me that Akito said if he beat you he would accept him into the family. He also said he wouldn't lock him in the kitty house.” Tohru's smile faded. “Kyo's been trying so hard but I don't think he'll be able to do it.” Tohru looked down again. Yuki walked over and lifted her chin. He gave her that sweet smile and soft eyes he always did and kissed her lightly on the forehead. Tohru blushed brightly. It was unlike Yuki to be this affectionate with her.
“Thank you Tohru.” Yuki looked her in the eyes and for once he looked happy. He let go of her chin and walked out of the room. Tohru blinked blankly after him and smiled.
“Oh Yuki…”

………………….

Yuki walked into the kitchen and slammed his hands down on the counter. Kyo was standing no more than a few feet away with his back to him. He jumped at the sudden ruckus and turned around. He looked strangely back at Yuki's harsh glare and returned it with one of his own.

“What's your problem rat boy?” Kyo said with a snappy voice.
“You listen to me you stupid cat.” Yuki eyed him coldly and walked up to him. “I think it's time we settled this once and for all.”
“Oh yeah.” Kyo's expression darkened.
“You and I both know we are after the same girl and I want to settle this tonight.” Yuki said harshly.
“So you want to fight to see who gets Tohru?” Kyo wanted to make sure he heard it correctly.
“That's right.” Yuki said his expression slightly faltering.
“Why don't you just accept you lost? She's already told me she would marry me.” Kyo raised a brow.
“Listen you stupid cat. I may have already lost but I just want the pleasure of kicking your ass. I think it will make me feel better.” Yuki glared.
“Then no, I don't want to give you the pleasure of anything.” Kyo replied and waited to see what Yuki would do. Yuki stared back at him with the glare still on his face but something behind his eyes seemed to be begging Kyo to change his mind.
“Fine.” Yuki turned away from him. “Then I guess I'm just going to have to make you.” Yuki grabbed Kyo just as Shigure had opened the door to the porch. “Shigure! Move!” Yuki threw Kyo through the open door just as Shigure moved out of the way. Kyo landed on his back in the dirt and grumbled.
“Oh dear… What's going on?” Shigure asked.
“Nothing. Just stay out of it.” Yuki said as he walked past him and jumped off the porch.
“What the hell was that about?” Kyo glared as he sat up. For some reason Yuki looked particularly mad today. It almost reminded him of how Haru acted when he would turn down his fights.
“Get up.” Yuki snapped. “I am not going to fight you if you're lying on your ass.”
“That's it! I don't know what your problem is but I think you need to get over it.” Kyo stood up and put up his fists. He lounged at Yuki and missed. But that was always how the fight went. Kyo spun around and was struck in the face. He went flying back and landed on the ground again.
“What's the matter with you? Can't you stand on your own two feet?” Yuki snapped. Kyo got up and glared. Blood was trickling down from his lip.
“I expected a kick. So why did you punch me?” Kyo glared. Something wasn't right about this whole thing.
“Stop talking and get up.” Yuki pressed. Kyo got back up and was trying to figure out what was going on. “Why are you just looking at me? Are you too afraid to fight me because you'll know you'll loose? Are you really a coward? Just think what Tohru will think of you when I win.”
“Oh that's does it.” Kyo glared and swung and punch at him. “Don't say anything about Tohru!” Yuki dodged Kyo's fist and kicked him in the side. Kyo fell to his knees and got back up. He turned swiftly and swung another punch and for some reason he hit Yuki this time. Yuki fell backwards and landed on the ground. Kyo blinked wide eyed and looked confused.
“What the hell?” Kyo said as Yuki tripped him up. Yuki jumped on top of Kyo and glared down at him with narrowed eyes.
“I know you can do better than that you stupid cat.” Yuki said.
“Stop taunting me!” Kyo pushed him off. Yuki jumped back and held his fists up. “I hate it when you do that!” Kyo went at him again. He missed his punch again and Yuki went to kick. Kyo saw the move this time and grabbed his leg. Yuki looked surprised for a moment and then Kyo punched him. Yuki cringed slightly and fell to the ground again. Kyo stood there with his fist out and lowered it. Yuki was breathing hard and glanced up at Kyo again. Yuki's eyes flashed and he charged at Kyo. He knocked Kyo over and started punching him.
“Idiot! You are such and idiot!” Yuki felt his anger drift away for a moment and he calmed. Kyo must have gotten tired of it cos he threw Yuki off him. Yuki hit his back against a nearby tree and screamed out slightly.
“Now look who's on the ground.” Kyo snapped. Yuki smiled slightly to himself and looked back up at Kyo with sad but satisfied eyes.
“You win.” Yuki said calmly.
“What.” Kyo looked at him.
“I don't have the energy anymore and you're still standing. You won Kyo. It looks like you are the better martial artist and you are definitely the best person for Tohru.” Yuki cringed and held his side.
“Are you okay?” Kyo felt afraid. How bad had he hurt him? All this time he dreamed of beating Yuki and now that he had he felt slightly empty.
“You know your punches hurt.” Yuki mumbled slightly.
“Yuki!” Tohru ran over to him. “Are you okay?”
“I'm fine Tohru… I'm fine.” Yuki said but he didn't look up. “You can tell Akito you won Kyo. Shigure, Tohru, I can vouch for that.” Yuki pulled himself up slowly and stumbled.
“Yuki.” Tohru was fretting but Yuki brushed her off.
“I'm fine… You should check Kyo.” Yuki said as he slowly walked off back to the house. Shigure watched him as he walked past him. His stared was serious and calm. He knew exactly what had just taken place.

End Chapter Five

I did get the message about what seemed to be a mistake in my last chapter. But in fact it wasn't a mistake. Kyo who was never told what exact relation Kyoko was to Tohru's grandpa so when he talked to him he simply didn't know any better. And as for grandpa, he's based on the manga, which means he's a senile old man. So the flashback in the last chapter was correct. It is true that Kyoko was the grandfather's daughter in law. But I thought it would be fun to demonstrate how senile grandpa was and how oblivious Kyo was. So really it was just placed for comedy purposes. Sorry about that. I'll change it if it really bugs people. Thanks for reading and giving me all the reviews up until now. I'm glad most of you like the story. Even if it seems like I'm being stupid. Anyways please give me more reviews and I will try not to make this too annoying. Thanks.
