Frozen In The Snow

Chapter Nine: Hourglass
By: Demon Priestess Saturn

Yuki peeked around the large gate leading into the main section of the Sohma estate. He glanced around cautiously wondering why it was so quiet. He felt jittery, for he didn't want to be spotted by anyone. He stepped past the gate and shut it quietly. He quickly but quietly made his way around the houses heading in the direction of Hiro's house. As he came within range he could hear hushed but harsh voices. As he came closer it soon became clear to him who was talking.

“Hiro! How could you do that! Do you know what you have done?” Isuzu sounded hurt and was almost crying. “You messed it up. You weren't supposed to tell Haru anything.”
“Rin I told you it was an accident. I didn't mean to. I was afraid he was going to get Kisa in trouble. I had no idea he would confront Akito.” Hiro seemed to be rushing to cover something.
“How could you not know?” Isuzu hung her head. “He's Haru… You know how much of an anger problem he has…”
“Rin… I'm sorry…” Hiro also hung his head. “But I swear it was an accident.”
“An accident he might die for Hiro. It means nothing now. Everything I did. Everything I tried. It was for nothing.” Isuzu stared at the ground. Hiro stared at her for a long moment. The silence was suffocating and Yuki really wanted an answer to what was going on.
“It wasn't for nothing.” Hiro said suddenly. “Haru isn't going to die Rin. He's too tough to go down like that. Everyone's been saying it. He's going to wake up. It's just a matter of when.” When Isuzu didn't look at him he continued. “Look I was wrong… I should have never had that fight with Haru. I shouldn't have even talked with him. It's my fault he's in this situation. If I had just left him alone and not been a coward he would still be walking around making everyone smile. He could probably protect Kisa better than I could ever. Just because I was afraid was no excuse to yell at him for things he couldn't control.” Isuzu looked up at him suddenly. “I'm sorry Rin. I hurt you when I was trying to protect both you and Kisa.”
“Hiro…”
“Hiro!” A little girl with big brown eyes ran up to them suddenly.
“What's the matter Kisa?” Hiro looked over at the girl with shoulder length strawberry blonde hair. She was wearing a cute little yellow sundress with white flowers on it. On her feet she wore cute little white sandals to match.
“Kureno says he needs to speak to Yuki but mom wont let me go to Shigure's house.” Kisa said calmly.
“So why don't you call?” Hiro looked at her.
“I did. Kyo said that he left but he wouldn't tell me where. Will you go find him for me?” Kisa looked at Hiro.
“What do you mean he wasn't there?” Isuzu looked confused. “He was there when I left not more than a half and hour ago.”
“Kyo said that he left not too long ago.” Kisa looked at her.
“Why does Kureno want to talk to him?” Hiro asked.
“I don't know he just said it was important.” Kisa said calmly. Yuki sighed and stepped out from around the corner.
“Rin.” Yuki said calmly. The three looked over at him. “Have you seen Kagura? I need to talk to her.”
“She's at school or something.” Isuzu said calmly.
“Yuki.” Kisa ran over to him. “Kureno says he needs to talk to you. It's important.”
“Does he?” Yuki pretended that he hadn't heard the conversation but Isuzu seemed to be eyeing him.
“He says if you come now you don't have to worry about Akito. He said that after Hatori checked him he left.” Kisa finished her mission.
“Okay I'll speak with him. I see your arm has gotten better.” Yuki smiled at her half heartedly.
“Yeah it feels much better.” Kisa smiled. “How's Oni-chan?”
“She's fine.” Yuki said calmly.
“How long were you over there Yuki?” Isuzu glared harshly at him.
“I wasn't standing there I just got here.” Yuki looked over at her.
“You're lying.” Isuzu eyed him.
“Maybe I am but what does that matter for?” Yuki looked at her.
“I told you to stay out of it.”
“I can't.” Yuki narrowed his eyes.
“Why?” Isuzu took a step closer to him.
“Haru is my friend, my best friend. That is why I can't stay out of it and I won't. I owe him that much.” Yuki looked at her.
“You don't know how much you owe him.” Isuzu snapped. “You don't know what he went through to get you out of that house.”
“What?” Yuki looked at her with a confused expression on his face. “Kisa go tell Kureno that I will be there in a minute.”
“Okay.” Kisa turned and ran off.
“Alright Rin. What's going on?” Yuki eyed her. “I am not leaving until you tell me.”
“Now you're going to have to tell him.” Hiro said suddenly.
“Fine. Since were here talking we may as well say everything.” Isuzu folded her arms. “Haru made a deal with Akito a while back. He made this deal to get you out of the house. I don't know what the deal was or what it was about. I'm not even sure what he did. All I know is that Akito didn't keep his word. So Haru went to Shigure. He's the reason you got out of the main house. He made a deal with Shigure after he failed to do it himself.” Isuzu frowned. “So that's what I meant and as for the recent event Haru found out why I broke up with him. Hiro told him. That's why he's in his coma. Because he did something stupid again trying to protect me.”
“What exactly did he find out?” Yuki asked.
“He found out that I took his punishment. He found out the reason I was in the hospital was because Akito pushed me out the window.” Isuzu finished.
“I told him by accident because I was afraid he would get Kisa hurt. He wasn't supposed to find out.” Hiro looked at the porch. “It's my fault he's in his coma. If I hadn't opened my big mouth he would be okay.”
“So you think he confronted Akito after he found out?” Yuki said calmly.
“What do you think Haru would do?” Isuzu rolled her eyes. The three were silent for a long moment before Yuki spoke.
“I have been keeping something from you too.” Yuki said as he looked Isuzu in the eyes.
“What?” Isuzu stared at him.
“Rin. I want you to do me a favor. I want you when Haru wakes up to stay with him and not push away from him again. I don't care what Akito says if you have to I want you both to run away. Go somewhere you can be happy. He needs you Rin and as far as I can tell you need him. So will you promise me that you will do that?”
“Why would you ask me such a thing?” Isuzu looked annoyed.
“Isn't that what you want?” Yuki asked. Isuzu however said nothing and just stared at him.
“What does this have to do with anything?” Isuzu looked away from him.
“Because you two want to protect each other and both of you want to be together.” Yuki said.
“How do you…”
“Rin don't. Listen… The day after you broke up with him Haru tried to commit suicide.”
“What.” Both Hiro and Isuzu said in unison.
“Look.” Yuki held out his scared hand. “I got this when I knocked the knife out of his hand. He was so upset over the fact that he thought you didn't love him anymore that he couldn't take the pain. That was how I found out about your relationship. It was because I forced him to tell me what was wrong. I helped him get past the pain until he decided that he needed to prove how much he loved you. I felt after that point he wasn't going to take his life anymore.”
“That stupid cow…” Isuzu whispered.
“I know that you were protecting him out of love Rin but I think the best thing for the two of you is to leave this place and be happy together. So Rin will you promise me to leave with him when he wakes up?” Yuki stared at her. Isuzu looked up at him with a strange look on her face. Was this really the same Yuki she knew from before?
“I don't think I can do it. I can't make I promise I know I won't keep.” Isuzu said suddenly.
“Then do it for him. Can you keep a promise for him? I think you can.”
“Rin?” Hiro looked at her. “Please…” It was quiet for a long time before Isuzu finally gave in.
“Alright… I promise… For him.” Isuzu looked up at Yuki sincerely. Yuki smiled back at her and for some reason he felt happy.
“Thank you Rin.” Yuki smiled warmly at her. “Hiro this isn't your fault, its Akito's. So please don't blame yourself for what happened to Haru. I'm going to talk with Kureno before Akito gets back.” Yuki said and walked off down the path.
“He's changed.” Hiro said calmly.
“Yes… He has.” Isuzu stared after the rat.

“What am I doing?” Yuki thought to himself as he walked up to the stairs leading into the manor. He stared up at the door and frowned. Haru was the reason he escaped this place. “But why?” He whispered to himself. “Haru… Why?” Yuki looked at the ground and felt extremely guilty. “I let Rin get to me.”
“You shouldn't.” Yuki looked up to find himself staring at Kureno.
“Kureno…” Yuki said in almost a whisper.
“I didn't think you would come.” Kureno said as he walked down the stairs.
“What did you need to talk with me about?” Yuki asked feeling another pang of guilt. Kureno frowned and looked at the gate suddenly.
“You need to do something.” Kureno said staring off into the distance. “Because Akito is in the wrong.”
“What do you mean?” Yuki asked. Kureno looked at him seriously.
“Akito has gone to Hatsuharu. I fear that Akito wants to finish what he started.” Kureno stared into Yuki purple eyes. “He was mad when he failed two years ago. He's gone to finish the deed.” Kureno said calmly. Fear shot up throughout Yuki's body.
“Wha… What do you mean Kureno?” Yuki's voice trembled.
“Hatsuharu will be gone if you don't do something. Akito wants him dead.” Kureno said. Yuki blinked at him a few times and his eyes went wide. Yuki turned and bolted towards the gate. He pushed the gate open and didn't bother to close it. He spirited down the path and disappeared from view. Kureno stared after him for a short time before he turned and went back into the manor.

“Kyo! I'm home!” Tohru said brightly as she walked through the door.
“Hey.” Kyo mumbled from the couch.
“How was your day?” Tohru looked as him.
“It was fine.” Kyo stared at the telephone. Tohru frowned and sat down next to him on the couch.
“Is something wrong Kyo?” Tohru looked concerned.
“No I'm fine.” Kyo sat up and looked over at her. “So how was the shopping trip?”
“It was great! Uo found herself a nice little outfit and Hana bought herself a new dress.” Tohru smiled.
“That's cool. Did you get anything?” Kyo asked.
“No I didn't find anything that I really liked. Besides I need to save my money.” Tohru stood up. “Has Yuki come out of his room?”
“Yeah.” Kyo nodded.
“He did! That's great. Where is he?” Tohru looked around.
“He left. He went to go talk to Hiro about something and he hasn't come home yet.” Kyo leaned back in the couch.
“Is Shigure still over at Hatori's?”
“Yep.”
“Oh! I better get dinner started. They both will probably be home soon.” Tohru ran off into the kitchen and Kyo sighed. He slumped back down into the couch and his kitty ears went down.
“Kagura…” Kyo whined a little and then the phone rang. In less than a second Kyo bolted for the phone and picked it up. “Hello!” Kyo frowned suddenly. “Oh it's just you.” Kyo looked bored holding the phone. “Yeah I'll tell her. Okay bye.” Kyo hung up the phone and folded his arms. He leaned back onto the couch and glared at the phone.
“Kyo? Who was that?” Tohru asked as she peeked into the living room.
“Shigure. He says he invited Hatori and Ayame over for dinner.” Kyo mumbled.
“Really! Oh my gosh! What am I going to do… Oh! I know!” Tohru disappeared into the kitchen again.
“What am I going to do? She won't talk to me on the phone…” Kyo mumbled. “Ah the hell with this!” Kyo stood up. “I'm going to take a walk!”
“Okay!” Tohru yelled from the kitchen as Kyo grabbed his coat and walked out the door.

Kagura walked down the street heading home when she spotted Yuki as he bolted a crossed the street towards the hospital. “Huh?” She thought to herself as she ran up to the street corner and looked after him. “Yuki!” She shouted but he seemed to not hear her. “Where is he going in such a hurry?” Kagura blinked as she stood at the street corner. “The hospital… Haru!” Kagura ran down the street after him. “Yuki! Wait!” She said. He heard her this time and stopped to look. He was breathing heavily and his cheeks were red. “What happened?” Kagura asked calmly.
“I… Don't… I don't have time…” Yuki said as he turned and continued running.
“Yuki wait! What about your asthma!” Kagura ran after him. She wasn't sure what was going on but it was obviously an emergency. As they both ran through the double doors on the bottom floor of the hospital, Yuki stopped at the elevator and pushed the button three times.
“Come on…” Yuki said out of breath.
“Yuki what's the matter?” Kagura asked but he didn't answer her. The elevator doors opened and the two quickly stepped inside. “Is Haru okay?” Kagura asked.
“I don't know.” Yuki said out of breath. “Kureno said…” Yuki gasped.
“Kureno said what?” Kagura looked at him with a worried expression.
“Akito's trying to kill Haru.” Yuki said finally.
“What!” Kagura yelled as the elevator doors opened. They both bolted down the hall till they reached the door to Haru's room. Yuki grabbed the doorknob and quickly opened the door.
