Chapter Ten: Life Or Death

Yuki pushed open the door to Haru's room breathing heavily. Kagura stood just behind him with a scared look on her face. Akito glanced over his shoulder at them as he pulled his thin long white hands away from Haru's bed. Yuki glanced about the room at all the monitors and at the tables near Haru's bed. He was surprised to find nothing out of place but he glared back at Akito once he rested his eyes on him. Akito turned to face them with an expressionless face and stared at Yuki almost daring him to say anything.

 

“Akito.” Yuki gasped. “What are you doing?”

“I came to visit Haru.” Akito said calmly. “After all I do care about what happens to him.” Akito glanced at Kagura as she slipped past Yuki and over to Haru. “Do you have a problem with that Yuki?”

“No.” Yuki lied as he pretended to be calm. Kagura glanced back at Yuki and lipped something without Akito noticing.

“Then why did you barge in here acting like something was happening?” Akito stepped up to Yuki and smiled. Yuki froze as Akito stopped next to him in the doorway. “Were you afraid I was going to do something?” Akito whispered in his ear.

“No.” Yuki lied. “I just thought it was strange that you left the house by yourself. I was afraid you might get sick and collapse.”

“You're lying.” Akito frowned. “You are lucky Kagura is present and you are at the hospital.”

“Like that would stop you.” Yuki snapped but didn't look at him. Akito sneered at his comment.

“Something unfortunate might befall you.” Akito ran his hand a crossed Yuki's cheek and walked down the hall. Yuki reached up and touched his cheek as he turned and watched Akito walk down the hallway until he disappeared from view.

“Are you okay?” Kagura looked at him with a worried expression.

“Yes…”

“You're lying.” Kagura said calmly as Yuki looked back at her. “What's wrong?”

“It doesn't matter. Is he okay?” Yuki changed the subject.

“Well the numbers on the gauges were a little weird when we walked in but they are back to normal now. He's fine as far as I can tell. It doesn't look like Akito did anything.” Kagura replied.

“He did do something.” Yuki walked over. “Did you see where his hand was?”

“No.”

“It was near Haru's neck. He was trying to strangle him.” Yuki frowned.

“How do you know?” Kagura looked at Yuki with fear in her eyes.

“Because that is where I saw him pull his hand back from. That and…” Yuki pointed to a slight red mark on Haru's neck. “You can see it.”

“Oh my god…” Kagura covered her mouth. “But why?”

“Because he intended for Haru to be dead by now.” Yuki looked down.

“What for?” Kagura looked at Haru for a moment.

“For standing up to him.” Yuki also looked at Haru. “All for Rin. Because he loves her.”

“Isuzu…” Kagura whispered. “We can't leave Haru by himself. If we do…”

“I know.” Yuki said calmly. Kagura sat in the chair next to Haru's bed and gripped onto his hand.

“Oh Haru.” Kagura rested her forehead on his and her hand. Yuki stared for a moment before he felt a little dizzy. He fell back into the wall and tried to clear his mind. Kagura looked up and stared at him with wide eyes. “Are you okay? You look pale.”

“I'm fine.” Yuki said as he leaned his head back against the wall and closed his eyes.

“But you were running all that way. What about your asthma?” Kagura stood up but she was still holding onto Haru's hand.

“I'm…” Yuki looked back as her with glazed eyes. He felt like a weight had suddenly fallen on his chest. He fell to his knees and gasped for air.

“Yuki!”

Kyo walked back into the house after taking his hour-long walk. He could hear Ayame boasting in the kitchen with Shigure about something when he spotted Tohru and Hatori in the other room. Tohru looked panicked and Hatori was finishing his conversation on the phone. When Hatori hung up the phone he walked out and grabbed his coat off the chair. Hatori glanced at Kyo as he walked by and walked out the front door.

 

“Hatori. I want to come with you.” Tohru sounded scared.

“What's going on?” Kyo asked just as Shigure and Ayame walked into the living room.

“We'll explain it to you in the car.” Hatori said as he walked out onto the porch.

“An emergency call?” Shigure asked promptly.

“Yes.” Tohru said quickly. Kyo glanced at both Shigure and Ayame before he sighed and followed Tohru to Hatori's car. As he slipped into the back seat he situated himself before asking again.

“What's going on?” Kyo looked at both Tohru and Hatori as they started down the driveway.

“Kagura called.” Tohru said calmly.

“She did.” Kyo perked up.

“She said that her and Yuki were at the hospital with Haru.” Tohru continued.

“What happened?” Kyo felt a knot in his chest. “Is Haru okay?”

“Yes but Yuki had an asthma attack.” Tohru finished.

“He hasn't had one of those in over two years.” Kyo looked worried.

“He may have stopped getting them as often but that doesn't mean it went away.” Hatori said calmly.

“I know that.” Kyo glared. “I was just saying he hasn't had one in a long time.”

“Then why do you act so surprised?” Hatori commented.

“I don't know.” Kyo folded his arms and glared out the window. They didn't say anything else during the drive to the hospital. Tohru spent her time fidgeting in her seat while Kyo stared at the sidewalks. When they reached the hospital Tohru quickly jumped out of the car and started heading towards the double doors. Kyo and Hatori followed her all the way to the emergency room. As they entered the waiting room Hatori quickly disappeared into the back. Kyo glanced around before looking over at Tohru.

“Where's Kagura?” Kyo asked.

“I don't know.” Tohru also looked around.

“I thought she would be in the waiting room.” Kyo muttered as he sat down in the chair. Tohru sat down next to him and continued to look worried. “Come here.” Kyo pulled her into his arms and hugged her lightly so he wouldn't transform. “Calm down. Everything will be okay.”

“But what if it's not going to be?” Tohru looked up at him. “My mom died because of an accident. This is an accident isn't it?”

“Yuki's not going to die Tohru.” Kyo tried to comfort her even though he himself wasn't sure of the outcome. After about and hour Tohru stood up and started pacing. Kyo watched her calmly and at the same time he himself started to worry. Tohru eventually wandered up to the reception desk and started talking with the lady. Kyo watched her as she did this and felt that he needed to do something for her. When Tohru walked back over with a frown on her face Kyo stood up. “What's up?”

“I don't know. They said they don't know what's going on with Yuki. All they told me was Hatori was working on it.” Tohru looked at the ground.

“Wait here a second.” Kyo told her before walking over to the receptionist. “Excuse me.”

“Yes?” The lady looked up at him.

“Could you tell Doctor Hatori Sohma-san that Tohru and I went to see Haru?” Kyo said to the lady.

“Hang on.” She pulled out a piece of paper. “What is your name?”

“Kyo.”

“You are going to see who?”

“Hatsuharu Sohma.” Kyo repeated as she finished writing it down.

“I will let him know as soon as he's available.” The lady smiled.

“Thanks.” Kyo said as he walked back over to Tohru.

“Kyo?” Tohru looked like she was confused.

“Let's go visit Haru. That way we don't have to sit down here and wait.” Kyo said calmly.

“Okay. Hatsuharu-san would like that.” Tohru smiled even though she was far from happy.

“Alright let's go.” Kyo turned and started walking down the hall with her. They headed to the elevator. Kyo pushed the button before glancing at Tohru. She was staring blankly down the hall. “You okay?”

“Huh?” Tohru quickly looked back at him. “Oh I'm fine.” Tohru smiled lightly but Kyo knew better than to think everything was okay.

“Stop worrying so much. He'll be fine.” Kyo said calmly.

“I hope so.” Tohru looked down at the floor just as the elevator doors opened. They both stepped inside Kyo quickly pushed the button to the fifth floor. They said nothing to each other until they reached Haru's room.

“The door is shut.” Tohru said calmly.

“Maybe the doctors are in there.” Kyo said.

“But wouldn't that mean Hatori is here?” Tohru looked at Kyo.

“Yeah I guess.” Kyo reached for the doorknob and turned it. He slowly opened the door and looked inside. Kagura sat next to Haru leaning slightly on the bed. Her arms were crossed and she had her head buried in them. She lifted her head and looked Kyo in the eyes as he stared at her from the doorway. Tohru walked past Kyo and smiled.

“Kagura.” Tohru walked over to her.

“What are you doing here?” Kagura asked calmly.

“I got worried when you called about Yuki so I came with Hatori to make sure he was okay.” Tohru frowned.

“I see.” Kagura glanced at Kyo and realized he was still staring at her. “Did you hear anything about Yuki yet?”

“No we haven't.” Tohru looked worried again.

“I need to make a phone call. Do you two mind watching Haru for me?” Kagura stood up.

“No not at all.” Tohru said promptly.

“Thanks a bunch. Oh and if one of you needs to leave make sure at least one of you stay with him okay.” Kagura said with a slight smile.

“Okay.” Tohru seemed confused.

“Why does one of us have to stay?” Kyo asked Kagura.

“Well… Either Yuki or me will tell you later. It's important.” Kagura looked sad for a moment. “I'll be right back.” Kagura walked out the door leaving Kyo with Tohru.

“Something seems to be bothering her.” Tohru looked at Kyo.

“Yeah probably me.” Kyo muttered.

“What did you say?” Tohru asked.

“Nothing.” Kyo walked into the room and sat down.

Kagura quickly walked over to a payphone and put some money in. She dialed her home phone and waited for someone to answer. As the phone rang she began to feel a little impatient.

 

“Oh come on someone answer.” Kagura looked at the floor.

“Who are you calling?” Kagura looked up to see Isuzu standing next to her.

“Isuzu!” Kagura's eyes lit up and she hung up the phone. “I was trying to call you.”

“What for?” Isuzu looked strangely at her.

“I have something important I need to tell you. It's about Haru.”

“God damn it!” Kyo snapped.

“What?” Tohru looked over at him.

“I had Kagura right here and I didn't even say anything to her. I've been trying to talk to her for a month and now when I get the chance I let it get away.” Kyo punched the wall.

“Then why don't you go find her and talk to her?” Tohru suggested. Kyo's perked up and looked over at her.

“That's a good idea. I think I will.” Kyo went over to the door and just a he reached for the doorknob the door opened and smacked him in the head.

“Kyo!” Tohru jumped up. Kyo fell to the floor and shook his head.

“Damn it.” He looked up with his fiery orbs to see Isuzu standing in the doorway. “Why don't you watch what you're doing?”

“Well maybe you shouldn't be standing behind the door.” Isuzu snapped.

“Isuzu?” Tohru looked at her as she walked in followed by Kagura.

“Kyo are you okay?” Kagura knelt down next to him.

“I'm fine.” Kyo grumbled as Kagura checked his head.

“It's just a little bump I think it will be okay.” Kagura smiled.

“Thanks.” Kyo looked up at her.

“Did you tell them?” Isuzu looked at her.

“I told them what happened to Yuki.” Kagura said calmly.

“Good. That's all they need to know.” Isuzu looked back at Haru and frowned. “I hate Akito.” Isuzu whispered.

“You're so rude.” Kyo stood up and rubbed his head. Kagura walked over to Isuzu and looked down at Haru.

“You know… His hand twitched earlier.” Kagura said calmly.

“What?” Kyo looked at her.

“Before Yuki collapsed I was holding his hand and I felt it twitch.” Kagura looked at Kyo.

“Are you serious?” Tohru brightened up.

“I think he's going to wake up.” Kagura smiled softly. Isuzu reached her hand out and grabbed Haru's.

“Probably when he stops being lost.” Kyo commented.

“Yeah.” Kagura laughed slightly. “He's really good at getting lost.”

“But he always finds his way home.” Tohru smiled brightly.

“Yeah after he goes in circles a few times.” They heard a soft voice behind them. Kyo and Isuzu looked over their shoulders. Kagura turned slightly and smiled. Tohru turned around and looked relived.

“Yuki.” Tohru walked over to him.

“Miss Honda.” Yuki looked at her.

“You okay?” Kyo turned around.

“I'm a little tired.” Yuki whispered slightly.

“Yuki come here and sit down.” Kagura walked him to one of the chairs and sat him down. “Are you sure you're okay?”

“Yeah.” Yuki nodded.

“Don't overexert yourself or you will have another attack.” Hatori commented from the doorway. Isuzu glanced at Yuki and continued to stare at him. When Yuki looked up he met her stare with tired eyes.

“I didn't.” Yuki said to her.

“You didn't what?” Kagura looked at him.

“Nothing.” Yuki said calmly.

“I'll let you all visit for a little bit. When I get back I am going to take you three home.” Hatori said as he looked at Kyo and Tohru.

“Okay.” Tohru smiled before walking over to Yuki and sitting down beside him.

“You look really sick.” Kyo commented but Yuki ignored him.

“Kagura are you staying with Haru tonight?” Yuki looked at her.

“No I am.” Isuzu looked at him.

“Me and Isuzu will take care of it.” Kagura said calmly.

“Take care of what?” Kyo looked at them.

“I don't think that it should be entirely up to you two. I think we should take shifts.” Yuki said calmly.

“You're in no condition to do that right now.” Kagura looked worried.

“Then have Kyo do it.” Yuki looked at them.

“Huh?” Kyo looked confused.

“Have Kyo do what?” Tohru looked at Yuki.

“He doesn't need to know.” Isuzu glared.

“I'll decide who needs to know.” Yuki stood up. “Kyo.”

“Yeah.” Kyo looked at him.

“Can I talk with you outside? Please.”

“Sure.” Kyo said. Yuki nodded and walked out the door. Kyo followed him quietly closing the door behind him.

“That damn rat.” Isuzu glared.

“He's just worried.” Kagura said calmly. “Besides he is right about one thing. Both me and you will probably get really tired if we don't have someone else to switch off with.”

“Fine.” Isuzu sighed.

“What's going on?” Tohru looked at Kagura.

“Oh it's nothing you should worry about Tohru.” Kagura smiled.

“Okay.” Tohru stared at the door. But she certainly didn't feel assured.
