`Rin?' Kyo wondered, as he and Tohru walked home in silence. `No, if it was Rin, Haru wouldn't have been joking around about it.' He furrowed his brow. `Kagura?' Ah, hell no! That's just disgusting! Even for that damn rat! Maybe it isn't someone in the zodiac, but that would make things difficult. Maybe she knew about the zodiac, but isn't in it. Hmm…'
“Kyo?” Tohru asked. “Are you O.K.?”
He nodded. “Just thinking.”
“About what?”
Kyo paused, debating whether or not he should venture out on this limb. “Hey, I have a question.”
Tohru turned to face him. She cocked her head, smiling. “Yes?”
“Um,” Kyo felt really awkward prying. “Do you know who Yuki was seeing a couple of months ago?” He asked.
Tohru cocked her head to the other side. “Yuki was seeing someone?” She asked.
“Oh, um… no, I guess not. I must have just misunderstood.” Kyo stammered. `OOPS! I hope she doesn't tell him I asked! Ah, why the hell do I care if she tells him?' “Maybe he'll want to FIGHT ME! YEAH!” He shouted, punching the air.
Tohru gave him a funny look. “Um… O.K.” She said brightly.
`What if he was lying, maybe it was Tohru!' He looked over at her; her goofy smile still adorned her face. `No, it wasn't Tohru.' He took a few more steps. `HARU!' He shouted in his head. `It must have been Haru, I mean that would be when he and Rin just broke up… then if Akito found out, he must have been furious! It all makes sense now!' Kyo kicked his shoes off at the door as they arrived home. `Except… Haru's a guy.' Kyo furrowed his brow once again. `Yuki did say it was a girl.' He thudded loudly up the stairs. `Of course he could have been lying to cover his ass in front of that Yankee. I mean if I was a fruit, I sure as hell wouldn't tell anyone!' Kyo snickered at the thought of his cousins together. `Damn rat, you thought you had me fooled.'
“KYO!” He heard Tohru call from downstairs. “Dinner's ready!”
He looked up from his homework; he hadn't really gotten anything done. He just couldn't concentrate for some reason. He trundled loudly down the stairs. To his surprise, Haru sat at the table, waiting to be served. “What the hell is he doing here?!?” Kyo snapped, venom pouring over his tongue. He gasped, `Where did that come from.'
Haru smirked. “Nice to see you too, Kyo.”
Yuki emerged from the kitchen, helping Tohru carry the various shaped dished for dinner. As expected, Shigure poked his nose through the door. “Dinner time already?” He asked, stretching. He yawned, “I really should be waking up before now.” He sauntered over to the table. Kyo glared at him. “Kyo, are you still mad at me about yesterday?” He asked.
“That was this morning, dumb ass!” He snapped.
“I'll take that as a yes. Or did something else upset you today?” Shigure asked jovially.
“No, leave me alone!”
Yuki and Tohru placed their respective items on the table. Yuki gave Tohru a flirty smile. Kyo noticed Haru's eyes narrow. Kyo grimaced. `Its your own fault, stupid cow. You're the one who couldn't hang onto him.' He was actually angry with Haru, but he couldn't tell why. Was happy that damn cow was jealous? Shouldn't he be happy Yuki was upset? It seemed obvious today that Yuki was still torn up by the relationship derailing. `If they both want it so bad, why don't they just pretend like it isn't happening.' Yuki scooted a little closer to Tohru. He felt his own jealousy flair. Yuki whispered something to her, and her cheeks burned a light shade of pink. `Damn rat. He always gets everything he wants.' He growled. `Wait a second… Why is Haru here?' Kyo glanced angrily at munching cow. `Maybe they are still seeing each other and that's why he's upset Yuki's flirting with Tohru! Hmm, no that doesn't make sense, they both said it was over.' Kyo mussed in his rice. `Maybe after talking about it today, Haru's here to reignite the old flame?' Kyo was suddenly assaulted with a violent array of complicated emotions. `There's no way in hell I'm jealous of that damn cow!' He thought. `O.K., well maybe I'm a little jealous because I do wish Yuki would pay some attention to me, but not in that fruity way… WHAT THE HELL AM I TALKING ABOUT? NO I DON'T!!! I HATE THAT DAMN RAT!!! I'M GLAD HE DOESN'T PAY ATTENTION TO ME, IT MEANS I DON'T HAVE TO THINK ABOUT HIM!!!' Kyo started eating angrily and irregularly; he choked.
“Kyo, are you O.K.?” Tohru asked, rushing to his side.
He nodded.
“Kyo, I know the food is good, but you can't breath rice.” Shigure teased lightly.
Kyo glared at him, but was too entranced by his inner monologue that he didn't fight back. He glanced at Yuki. He was still calmly eating, paying no heed of the unfolding events. “Damn rat.” He muttered.
Haru gave Yuki a protective glance. “Um, what's he got to do with this?” He asked.
“EVERYTHING!” Kyo shouted.
Three confused pairs of eyes focused on the fuming kitty. Yuki's, of course, remained on his dinner, still seemingly unaware of Kyo's plight.
“How do you figure?” Haru asked.
“AH, never mind!” Kyo spat, returning to his bowl. `Stupid rat! He deserves to be unhappy. I hope Haru breaks his heart again! Hell, I wish the worst with Akito on him! HE DESERVES IT!' Kyo finished quickly, and made his way to the roof to sulk.
A plunk of the ladder woke Kyo from his light slumber. He jumped. The fleeting visions of his dreams made him shiver. “Tohru?” He called.
Tohru peeked over the edge of the roof. She smiled. “I thought you'd be up here!” She crawled up next to the kitty and sat down.
Kyo smiled. He could never get used to the way she made him feel: accepted, loved, part of something. “So, what's up?” He asked.
She shrugged. “Oh, I don't know. I know it's none of my business, but you just seem upset lately. Is everything O.K.?” She asked sweetly.
“Yeah, it's just…” he sighed. “It's nothing.”
She met his vise with worry etched into her brow. “Is it Yuki?” She asked.
“NO! WHY THE HELL WOULD I CARE ABOUT HIM?!?”
Tohru looked crestfallen. “I'm sorry, I know it isn't my place to impose, I guess I was being presumptuous… I'm sorry.” She nodded politely and started toward the ladder.
Kyo hung his head, his kitty ears drooping. “Ah… you don't have to go. I didn't mean it like that. It's just that damn rat. I mean, what the hell is with him?”
She shrugged. “Maybe he just doesn't want to fight anymore.”
“That's ridiculous!” Kyo snorted. “We were born to fight each other.”
“I don't know that that's true, Kyo.”
“Of course it is! I'm the cat, he's the rat. That's how it's always been, that's how it will always be!”
“My mom always said that sometimes you come to expect things. Little things that you don't know how much they mean to you until their gone. Maybe that's why you feel so upset. You're relationship with Yuki was based solely on your rivalry, and now that he doesn't want that, you feel neglected.”
“I DON'T FEEL NEGLECTED!” Kyo spat.
“I'm sor…”
“Don't be,” Kyo interrupted. “Anyway, if he felt like, that he could just say that, you know.”
“Maybe he doesn't know how to deal with you without fighting. Besides, would you listen? You were born to fight, remember.” Tohru looked pensive.
He sighed, staring at the setting sun. “You know,” he said changing the subject. “I had a dream about Akito just now.”
Concern jaded Tohru's eyes. “What happened?”
“I don't really remember. I just remember that creepy assed smile of his. He kept laughing. His eyes were all wild, and he wouldn't stop laughing. I think Yuki was there.” Kyo shivered. “It was weird.”
Tohru stiffened a bit. “That… that is weird.” She stammered.
Kyo gave her a sideways glance. “Are you O.K.?” He asked.
She nodded. “I… um… I'm sorry. I guess I'm just a little worried about… um… that quiz tomorrow. I forgot about it until just now.”
“You wanna go study?” Kyo asked, arching his brow, but still peering at her from the corner of his eyes.
Tohru nodded. “Yeah, I really should. I'll talk to you later.” Tohru hurried down the ladder.
`Sometimes I swear she's got brain damage.' Kyo decided to follow her inside and hop into bed. Tired as he was, he was prepared for nice long night of rejuvenating sleep. Little did he know, a nice long night of rejuvenating sleep was the last thing he was going to get.
