Final Hour

Sayna put the baby to bed, then crawled into bed beside her husband. She snuggled under the covers, feeling Martin’s arm curl around her.
“Mar-chan?” she whispered.
“Yeah?” He breathed, burying his face in her thick aqua hair.
Sayna held her pillow case, face showing the worry her mate could not see. “Do you think we made the right choice?”
He shrugged, sitting up to rest his cheek on her shoulder. “Whatever. Just because we gave Matt some new food and she yuked it up meant nothing.”
After a long time, it registered to Sayna. “You can never be serious, can you? I was talking about not going to Heiven so we can live.”
Martin rolled his eyes. “Sorry if I don’t like seeing people unhappy. Listen,” His body shifted, face now hovering over his wife’s. “No matter what we chose, we can always change that. I read the map and have it memorized in here.” He tapped his temple. “Don’t fret over it, alright?” Leaning down, their lips met for a moment. “We made the decision not to go. No matter what happens because of it, I’ll love every minute of being here with you and Mattimeo.”
Sayna gazed right into his eyes. She saw his born warrior and caring self within his black orbs. Her hand cupped his cheek, moving down to his chin. She quickly wrapped her arms around his neck.
Martin patted her back. “I love you very much.”
“I love you too….” His body slid down with his, arms not leaving his shoulder. An hour later, she was a few minutes from sleep.
Martin settled himself against her, nudging his nose against hers. Sensing his wife’s exhaustion, he stopped. Ears twitching, he glanced up at the window across the room, remaining composure. Blue and white sparkles flashed near the front of the house. “……a transmutation?”
“What?” Sayna cranked her neck up sideways to look at Martin’s face when he didn’t repeat. “Martin, what?”
The warrior sat up, raven eyes still watching the window. “A transmutation, by the front.” He pulled the sheets back, taking her shoulder. He looked her square in the eye. “Take my dagger. I’ll have my sword. Go right to Mattimeo, and close the door behind you. Do not open the door under any circumstances.” He picked up his sword from under the night stand. “This is what we’ve been dreading.”
Sayna only nodded. She knew better then to speak back to him.
“Right….” He kissed her passionately. “If anything goes wrong….I love you.”
She hugged and kissed him back. “I love you too.”

Goku buried his face in his wife’s hair, body moving around as he slept. She did kick him three times, but he didn’t notice. She was sound asleep by now anyway. Rocks and an elevated ki woke Goku right up looking around. He glanced at the window, lifting it open with a yawn. “Hello? Do you know we have a door?”
“Son-kun! Thank goodness, it’s me! Sai!”
“Who?” Goku asked, half asleep mind not listening. “Chi, I think it’s for you…”Chi-Chi blinked into wakefulness, hearing him. “Wha-who is it?” She got up to have a look. “Sayna?”
Tears brimmed the woman’s eyes. She couldn’t handle being shot down. “Please!! It’s an emergency!” She cradled a sniffling Matti in her arms. Quieting the baby was not easy, only because the Knights would know it was her.
Once inside, Chi-Chi awoke Gohan to help Matti in Goten’s cradle. He was always good in taking care of little ones. Goku pulled Sayna’s long brown cloak away from her face. “Sai….what happened?” he whispered, not sure what to say about the marks on her face. He knew his friend was not an abuser.
Sayna accepted the ice pack Chi-Chi handed her for the bruises. “We were attacked…about two hours ago….Martin’s gone…They took him….”
Goku kneeled down in front of her as she sat in the kitchen chair. His large hands gently held her knees. “Hold on, start from the beginning. What happened?”
She inhaled a large gulp of air to hold back a choked sob. “Goku, Chi-Chi….I am so sorry for not telling you everything after we moved here. You’ve trained with Martin, haven’t you, Goku?” He nodded. “Then you know how he has some kind of strange power. Both of our relatives are people called alchemists.”
“Alchemists?” Goku repeated softly, “My grandpa told me about them, but not a whole lot.”
Sayna smiled a little. “We are special people, but are very discriminated against. Most think alchemists are useful and the brightest scientists that have ever come along for this time.” Her blue eyes faded out, gaze cast down as she could not look at anyone. “There are also those….who think alchemists trespass on their creator’s path, manipulating anything we desire because we are greedy. The truth is, we cannot control what we have. Martin and I were going to hide our skill from Mattimeo, but she would learn it sooner or later when she grows up.”
Chi-Chi softly brushed the woman’s tears away with a cloth as they slipped down her cheeks. “We would never be diverse with you, Sayna. No matter what you are, it doesn’t matter. Hell, I married Goku; he should be enough of an example.” Her husband rubbed the back of his head, Son smile on his face.
She shrugged her shoulders weakly. “It doesn’t matter now anyway. Martin is gone now.”
Goku cocked his head to the side. “Gone?”“A secret group called the Knights are similar to the KKK. They seek out alchemists and have them killed. They believe we should be since we are over ourselves. They follow an ancient holy order that tells them what alchemists have done, which adds up to us angering their god, or whoever. I don’t know much about them, but before I met Martin, he had a run in with them. This time…he didn’t make it. They burned down the inside of the house, so I have nowhere to go.”
Goku and Chi-Chi were too horrified to speak. Aside from the sci-fi like secrets, they had no idea how much trouble their friends had been in. Now they were just told their neighbor was just assonated all because of his race and family line. His wife and offspring were now in danger also with out his protection.
Enraged, the saiyan warrior ordered Sayna to tell him where the Knights were. She shook her head. “No. I cannot. It is our problem. If an ordinary human becomes killed, your death will make a mess of everything. My sister arrived yesterday and gave us a map to a sanctuary land called Heiven. Alchemists long ago created a protective barrier around the area. The Knights don’t know about it. The only problem is…” Her delicate hands fingered her long sleeve. “I don’t know if I want to raise Matti there. Without her father, I seem at a loss of what I should do.” She covered her damp face in her hands. “I want to do the right thing….but…” She felt a hand on her shoulder and looked up.
“Stay the night here and we can figure every thing out in the morning. I’ll stay awake to make sure nobody comes around looking for you. Get some rest, you obviously need it.” Goku helped her stand.
Chi-Chi set up a place for her in Gohan’s room, finding the boy passed out next to the cradle while trying to get the babies to sleep. She gave the woman extra blankets. “Sleep awhile. Goku will do all he can to help you out.” She gave her a hug, then closed the door after leaving.
Sayna didn’t get ready for bed that instant. She pulled the shade down to cover the only window in the bedroom. Insecurity ran wild inside her mind, exhaustion coming in a close second. Martin was dead and could not protect her. Human transmutation was forbidden. Her family, (what was left), may be killed as soon as they leave the house. The Sons could be scheduled for execution because they housed alchemists. Defense is nowhere in sight. Her body quivered, expressing the hopelessness felt. She cleaned up as best she could then announced invitation when somebody knocked on the door.
Gohan had a fussing Matti in his arms. “I think she wants to sleep with you.” He mumbled, passing the baby to her mother. “Good night.” He then closed the door.
Matti stopped squirming and whining after a mere four minutes. She wanted the comfort of her father, but was satisfied with her mother.
Sayna cuddled the girl against her body. She never wanted to let go, but feared that was her only choice right now. If anything, she would rather sacrifice herself for her own child.

“Are you sure you want this, Sai? There are other ways. I can bring you to Heiven to guard you from any harm.”
She shook her head, pulling the hood over her head. “No. It will be too big of a risk. I would give my life just so my daughter can live.” She cupped the baby’s soft head, kissing the top. Her lips remained there for a long time. “I have to go. Please, take care of her.”
