When the Past Catches Up
Sayna held her baby girl close to her stomach. She hardly let the newborn go, only when Martin asked to hold her, or if Chi-Chi did. Mattimeo was her first; she did not want to take the chance of something happening. Now, though, there was no choice in the matter.
Gohan held Goten’s hands above his head, helping the one year old keep his balance. Having his tail removed two weeks ago, walking became even harder for the baby. The older of the two glanced up when sensing Sayna. “Ohayou, Sayna-san.”
“Good morning to you too, Gohan-kun.” She shifted Matti against her. “Is your dad around?”
Gohan thought for a moment. “No. I think he went training with Piccolo this morning. He hasn’t been back yet.”
“Oh…well, could you help me with something then? I just need you to move some boxes that are too heavy for me. Martin went out.”
Obliging to the task, Gohan brought his brother inside and told his mother where he was going before following the woman to her home. “How has Mattimeo been?” he asked.
Sayna smiled. “Well, she is beginning to teeth, so she’s nibbling on anything her little chubby hands can get on. She’s great though. How is Goten?”
He grinned. “Awesome! Better then what I thought a baby sibling would be.”
She smiled. “Make sure you take care of him.” She opened the small, picket gate in front of the house. “The boxes are in the living room. I can’t lift them myself, but they have to be moved in the back room.”
“Okay.” Gohan looked at the two stacks of boxes. Each pile was four cartons long. “Are you guys moving or something?”
She shook her head, placing Matti in her play pin in the another room. “No, we just have to put this stuff away. Matti gets into things so easily. We don’t want her hurt on some of the equipment.” She began to direct the boy where to put some of the marked cardboard containers.
Gohan did as requested, placing the boxes where she said. After the third box, he slipped and fell backwards, foot catching one of Matti’s rubber toys. He yelped, head ramming down on the hardwood floor. Rubbing the back of his head, he looked at the contents that fell out of the box. Raven eyes blinked, a skinny metal abacus, several glass beakers (none broken), news papers used to help keep the glass still, and a wooden test tube holder, had teetered out. Even a long sink faucet was in there.
Sayna, who was tending to a fussy Matti in her room, heard Gohan shout. She ran out to see what happened. “Gohan, you alright?” she saw the fallen box and guessed he fell.
Getting up and putting some items away, the boy shrugged. “Yeah. I wasn’t watching where I was going.” He sat and fiddled with the abacus. “I didn’t know you were a chemist.”
She cocked her head to the side. “A chemist. Oh! You mean from the beakers. Martin does that. When I found out I was pregnant, I stopped my experiments. Some of the chemicals could harm the baby.”
“I see.” He placed the counting tool back in with the other items, then lifted the package. “Over there, right?”
“Yup. Just a few more, then you can go home. Thanks a lot, Gohan.”

“Sayna, my sister!”
Martin covered his face with a hand, exaggerating his false misery. “Oh wonderful, Rose has come for a visit.” He patted Matti’s head as she sat on his lap. “Matt, your Auntie is here to disturb our lovely evening.” He smirked as her wide midnight eyes gazed up at him, curiosity clear in her features. Whispering, he told her, “This woman may be your mother’s twin, but she is nothing like her.”
“Now, now, don’t be such a goat, Martin. I only came to see my first nice!” Her smile was bright as she plucked Matti from her father, holding her up above her head. She made noises with her mouth to entertain the baby.
Martin blinked, staring at her. “First? Who said we were having more children?”
“Why, to carry on the family skill, of course!”
“Curse, you mean.” Sayna corrected, taking her giggling Matti back, “We refuse to teach her. Alchemy can have her killed.” She gently rubbed her cheek to the baby’s. “I’d rather die then see her have to.”
Martin nodded, folding his arms. “Most of our experiment equipment is put away. We decided to quit alchemy unless absolutely necessary.”
Rose rolled her bright aqua eyes. “Come on, you two! I live in the city and nothing has happened to me! I even know some people in the military who is an alchemist.”
Sayna held Matti to her chest, glaring at her slightly taller mirror image. “The have been spotted again, after all these years.”
Martin lamely rested his elbow on the table top, chin in palm. “Why else do you think we chose a secluded place like this to live? We do not want to be killed.”
“Alright, alright. She is your kid.” Rose admitted.
Sensing the mood in the air, Matti wrinkled her nose and clenched her fists. Tears welled up in her midnight eyes, face twisted in agony.
Her mother bounced her upon her hip, creating quiet melodies to calm her baby. “Shhh, Mazzy, it’s alright. Shhhh, now.”
Martin got up and took his daughter. He cradled her in his arms. “Now look what you’ve done, Rose!”
As he strode out of the room, she shot insults at him, knowing he was merely joking. “What I’ve done? Ha! The poor thing can’t help but wail around you!”
Sayna gently held her arm. “Sister, please. Martin and I are trying our best. We both will follow our oath and not teach her any alchemy.”
“Sai….I can’t lie to you.” She turned and gazed into her sister‘s eyes, expression no longer fun loving, but gloomy. “Mark and Takakshi…the got to them. I don’t know if you heard, since you’re this far off from the cities. I’m leaving for Heiven. It’s the only place alchemists and Ishbalains can go. Tell Martin and bring the baby along. We’ll leave by sunrise three days from now.” She slipped a well folded piece of paper in her hand. “A map. If you decide to go and can’t find us, follow it, then burn it.”
Sayna nodded in understanding of her instructions. She then moved aside so Rose could leave.
Hand on the door knob, she paused for a moment. “If I don’t see any of you again, I love you.” Body trembling, she quickly closed the door behind her.
Sayna held the paper to her chest. Her ears heard Mattimeo sniffling in her bedroom. Martin was speaking softly to her. A tear rolled down her cheek.
