Chapter 6: Moley, Moley Mole (?), Mustang's questions.

The monolith felt cool and calming against Ed's back.
Especially after all the work they had just done digging up graves of past attempts at human transmutation. Still, it had been worth it. With his bare back pressed against the grass the top of his neck against the monolith Ed laid there staring into the empty sockets of the skull.
`Affectionately' named 55, Ed was asking it questions to keep himself from going over them in his own mind. “Just what the hell happened here?”, “How many of you are there?”, “What was the point of all this then? And why have you dragged me into this mess?”.
Ed looked past the skull as he heard Al chuckling to Roy as he made `cuckoo' circles around one of his ears to signify just how insane Ed looked. “Ha, ha Al very funny, just remember whose idea it was to talk about things in the first place” Ed said with a small smirk.
Both Roy and Al were standing in the sun leaning against their shovels; their torso's stripped down to tank tops. “He's got a point Ed” Roy shouted over to him “you look pretty stupid lying there talking to a skull” Ed's smirk broadened into a smile. “Yeah well I may look stupid right now, but you always look stupid”.
“Ha ha, very funny Full Metal, you should have been a comedian” he replied rolling his eyes to show how lame he thought Ed's comment was. “Yeah well my questions still stand” Ed said sitting up “just how many have we got here in total?” he watched as Al started counting the skeletal remains.
“Um…… 70?” Al said the look on his face showing how unsure he was. “70! 70!” Ed slumped backwards in defeat “we're in WAY over our heads here guys, we aren't talking about a handful of homunculi like before, we're talking about a god dam army of the bastards” he said with a sigh.
“Maybe, maybe not” Roy stated simply “After all, how many of these do we know were actually human transmutations?” he asked eyebrow arched inquisitively. “He has a point there brother, as far as we know this could simply be a organised crime `hit' ground where a few alchemists decided to try human transmutations because it looks ominous enough” Al stated.
“Maybe” Ed replied sitting up his interest peaking “I mean there where only a handful of alchemists to question, and only one of them did confess” he said warming to the subject. “Then it stands to reason that we only have a couple of homunculi on our hands doesn't it?” Roy said.
Ed shook his head as a truth set in “but what if we're wrong in this estimation, what if they hid the other alchemists and convinced the others to act innocent?” Ed `asked' pacing back and forth as he ran through these questions in his mind as well as at loud.
“But who's they Ed, the homunculi? They don't have the information to plan for our investigation that much” Roy said watching Ed pace.
“I'm not talking about the homunculi Mustang I'm talking about the mole or moles” He said his eyes darting to the skull then the monolith and back again nervously. “Mole? What mole brother?” Al asked concerned at how nervous Ed was acting. Ed's gaze turned to both Roy and Al.
“I'm talking about the mole within Western HQ, someone high enough to be aware of our impending investigation, young enough to be greedily ambitious and stupid enough to have believed whatever bullshit promises the homunculus promised him or her”.
“But how can you be sure we have a traitor in the midst?” Roy asked him not entirely liking where this conversation was venturing, it reminded him to much of the past. “I don't know Mustang I don't know about anything with this case its one great big mystery”.
Ed's gaze fell on Roy “but if we don't have a mole somewhere then how come the homunculus attacked us on the ship, or why set us up to find this place if not because they have someone on the inside of the state military who's toying with us without us knowing”.
Ed shivered at that thought his memory dragging up images of pride and the way he had misdirected and toyed with him as soon as he had joined the military. They all stared at each other clearly thinking the same thought “who the hell is it?” Ed asked, “I know” a voice said behind him.
Ed spun around to see who had just spoken. He stood before him like a vision of pure disgust, clothed in tatty ripped black rags, grimy nails and unkempt hair and dirty skin. But behind all this Ed saw what `he' really was. He was another homunculus, though which one exactly he didn't know.

A/U: Oh it's a short `un again, but think of it as a stop gap and a revealing of the questions I need to get the characters to ask each other, plus it's a way to lead to the fast paced uber-action next chapter. Review please and I'll catch you…… Later……
