Chapter Twelve "Life is Never Fair"

Jenna stood on the sidewalk outside of Hotohori's apartment. She felt sick to her stomach. She had caused such a mess if only they hadn't gone back to his place, perhaps she would never had seen the paintings and perhaps she wouldn't have had these weird thoughts/dreams floating through her head that made her sound like a lunatic. She sighed. He'd probably never want to see her again.

She glanced up at Korin and Tasuki giving each other one last goodnight kiss as a black limousine pulled up in front of the house. She glanced at the license plate and instantly froze. It was from Xiang-Sei Corporation, her father's company. Her first thought was that he must be having her followed then Hotohori came down the steps and had a few words with the driver before opening the door for her.

Hotohori took her hand as she got into the car, smiling down at her. "May I call you tomorrow?" Jenna turned her sad eyes to him. He couldn't help but think they held nothing but sorrow. Their violet depths were clouded with pain, a pain she refused to discuss with him. His heart ached for her, to hold her and make it all better. But she had shied away from him. It was as if she were in a trance or a dream state that she was unable to come out of. She gave him a sad smile and nodded her head as Korin slipped into the seat next to her.

"Take us home James!" Korin was so boisterous as she patted the driver on his back. The driver saluted her as he turned to wave as Hotohori closed the door before the car sped off.

Hotohori stood on the sidewalk and watched as the car turned the corner out of view. Sitting down on the step, Tasuki approached. "Wanna cig or a swig?" Tasuki grinned holding out a bottle of whiskey and a pack of cigarettes. Hotohori took the bottle, taking a long drink. Then without a thought he took a cigarette and lit it only to cough and throw it down on the sidewalk. "Disgusting, how can you pollute your lungs with that?"

Tasuki laughed, sitting down on the step. "That's one weird chick. What the hell is up with her?" Hotohori shook his head, he had no idea, but he intended to find out. He didn't tell that to Tasuki though because the next time he saw her, he planned on being alone.

Jenna and Korin lay their heads on the back of the seat. The driver kept looking in the rear view mirror at Jenna. Finally sick of him staring at her, she spoke up. "What? Do I know you?" The driver flushed. "I'm sorry, no ma'am. You just look familiar that's all." He continued to stare at her until finally it dawned on him. "Um, excuse ma' am. Aren't you Mr. Xiang's oldest daughter?"

Korin quirked an eyebrow at him and then turned towards Jenna. "Hey, who is this guy?" Jenna averted her eyes from both that glared at her and shrugged her shoulders. Then looking up she addressed the driver. "What is you name sir?" The driver grinned at her. "Mickey, ma' am. People call me Mickey. I've been with Xiang-Sei Corp for almost two years. I recognized you from the picture in Mr. Xiang's office."

Jenna shrugged her shoulders again then flat out lied to the man. "I'm sorry, you really have me confused with someone else. Perhaps you recognized me from the Dragon China. It's just down the street from the Xiang-Sei building. We both work there." She smiled sweetly. The driver shook his, giving a silent. "Oh." As he pulled into the parking lot of the girl's apartment building.

As the limousine pulled away, Korin nudged Jenna with her elbow. "What was that all about?" Jenna nodded her head. "That limousine was from my father's company." She paused and Korin started laughing. "Well thank you Captain Obvious! I want to know why you lied to him." Jenna giggled. "I just didn't want him to know. I don't want Hotohori to know." She shrugged. "Well, I'm going to bed, I have to be at work for the breakfast crowd. See ya'." Jenna turned to go up the steps to her apartment.

"Not so fast, Jenna girl." Korin grabbed her wrist. "We need to talk about what happened tonight." Jenna stared at Korin's hand. "No, I'm not talking about it now. Please don't push me." She looked up at Korin with tears in her eyes. "I just can't talk about it now, okay? I promise, we'll talk tomorrow."

"Promise?" Korin gave her a quick hug before she turned and ran up the steps to her apartment.

Jenna called Aunt Betty in the morning and lied, telling her she wasn't feeling well. Well, she really wasn't lying. She didn't feel well. She had a major hangover from drinking the wine the night before but she wouldn't admit that to Aunt Betty. Popping two tylenol and grabbing a can of coke, she picked up the t.v remote and laid down on the sofa flinging one leg over the back. `I'll just sit here and watch stupid shit all day. Yeah, that'll make me feel better.'

Staring at the t.v. she realized it must have been a long time since she watched anything. She didn't recognize any of the talk show hosts. The first one she choose of course was talking about past life regression. Nope, that wasn't the one for her. She flipped to three more stations before turning the t.v. off. `Yup, the universe is out to get me.' She thought as all the talk shows were basically about the same subject.

Hotohori sat at his desk on the twenty-third floor of Xiang-Sei Corporation. A stack of financial reports sat on the corner of his desk as he stared blankly down at one of them. Rubbing his forehead, he mumbles out loud. "Shit." He couldn't sleep the night before and now combined with the hangover from hell; his mind just refused to cooperate. He couldn't stop thinking about Jenna and the strange way she acted at his apartment.

"I give already." He threw his hands in the air, then stood, running a hand through his now messy long hair that had been tousled one to many times during the few hours he sat at his desk. Picking up the phone, he dials a number and waits, and waits. "Hi, it's me, I'm not here…" He quickly hangs up the phone. Damn answering machines. He quickly dials another number.

"Yes hello. No, I do not need to place an order." Rolls eyes. "Hello, yes, ma'am, may I please speak to Jenna." Pause. "Oh, I see, thank you." He quickly pushes the end button on the phone and slams it down on his desk. Pacing, pacing, `since when have I ever paced like this?' He shakes his head, sighing. `Not since I first met Miaka and she needed a shoulder to cry on over Taka.' He slams his fist on the desk. "Damn it!" He grabs his jacket off the back of his chair and leaves the office, slamming the door on his way out.

Jen had had enough of sitting in her apartment and had thrown on some black sweats and a ball cap. Walking down the street, trying to be invisible she slowly approached the Botoku Ittou Ippa, the Japanese school of martial arts and fencing. She peeked in the window before entering and saw someone in the fencing room working out. `Hmm', she thought to herself, `a victim just waiting for me to take out my frustration.' With an evil grin she entered the building and went straight to the locker rooms and quickly changed. She placed her face guard on as she grabbed a wooden sword from the holder by the door.

She walked into the training room, swinging the sword from side to side to get a feel for it. It had been a long time since she and Korin had played sword fights at this same school and she was eager to play again. "Excuse me." She called to the person who had their back to her. They lowered their sword as they turned around. "Yes?" Came a garbled male voice through the face guard. Jenna smiled to herself, `good a guy, I can really get my frustration out now.' She gave a giggle, trying to sound sweet and innocent. "Would you like a little competition?"

The man was taken aback. He just stared at her for a moment before his brain registered the question. "Um, why certainly." He leaned cockily on his sword. Jenna could just imagine the grin behind the guard, which just tended to irritate her. `Men! They are so full of themselves!' With that thought in mind, she attacked, whacking his wooden sword out from under his leaning body. He stumbled forward, catching himself before he met the floor. He looked up at her as he put his sword to his shoulder. "That, was not fair." She laughed as she once again lunged at him. And surprisingly, he was ready for her.

After several minutes of clashing swords, they were at a stand still, close together, trying to hold the other at bay, panting. "Very impressive. For a woman." He casually said next to her ear. She pulled her head back with a groan, meeting his eyes then jumping away from him. She stood staring at him for a moment. "And you are strong too, I am extremely surprised for `woman' your size."

`Okay Jen, don't take it personally, he's just trying to get you angry so you'll falter.' She knew this because it was the same thing that Korin always did to her. She calmly laughed, swinging her sword from side to side than she attacked once again.

They went out at it for a while again, the man eventually blocking her and getting her into the position where they couldn't move. "With your strength, you should be able to stop an opponent quickly. But you are slow and your moves need improvement." With that, he swung around, attacking her. She was totally caught off guard but pulling some memory from her head, she blocked him easily. Panting, she backed away, her eyes never leaving his. Her brain screamed. That move was like something out of her dreams. She stood still for a moment contemplating what she should do next just as he attacked again and she blocked him, again.

With every swing of his sword, the girl blocked him. `How could she know every move I'm going to make?' He stood panting. He couldn't get close enough to stop her. He kept attacking but she knew every move he was going to take before he took it. `How?' He thought to himself as he gazed at her through sweat filled eyes.

Jenna laughed. "What's the matter? Am I not as bad as you originally thought?" She was mocking him but before he had a chance to respond she attacked using one of his own moves! He blocked it easily but was still in shock that she did so. `Okay, think.' He told himself, `what have I not tried on her yet.' With that, he swung his sword around and watched in amazement as she quickly jumped out of the way and brought her own sword down upon his shoulder. He staggered, nearly falling from the force of the blow. `What! She should never have been able to do that!'

Jenna smiled behind the guard and pretended to examine her fingernail through her gloved hand. "Hmm, I hope I didn't hurt you." She said with calm as he straightened glaring at her. "Foolish girl. You obviously have had training of some sort." She took her stance, waiting for his impending attack. "Nope, only in my dreams. But I do like to play around. I guess play time is over now?"

She infuriated him. Who the hell did this bitch think she was? He attacked, she blocked, and they kept at it for a long time, never breaking. She was getting exhausted and finally she faltered. She never saw the swing coming until it was too late. And then she hit the floor like a ton of bricks, her face guard bouncing away into a corner, as she lay sprawled on her stomach.

He stood there in shock. He never expected her to not block that hit. `Shit!' He thought to himself as he quickly made his way over to her. `I just hit a woman. In the head. Oh gods, I am doomed.' He knelt down next to her putting his hand on her back. "I am sorry. Are you okay?"

She pushed him away and tried to get up on all fours. Her hair came out of its bun and slid down around her face. `Damn. Well for all it was worth, this has got to be the best workout I've had in years.' She laughed to herself. `Yeah, since the last time I dreamt of fighting with him…' She glanced to her side as the man laid his face guard next to her.

"Here, let me help. My apologies. I really thought you would block that. It was never my intention to hurt you." He reached out grabbing her by the shoulders and pulling her up to sit on her feet.

Jenna was frozen. That voice. `I really must be more hurt than I thought.' She groaned, pulling her hair back from her face and tucking it behind her ear as she slowly turned to face the man. Her heart did a flip-flop. `You're gonna catch flies with your mouth hanging open.' Aunt Betty's voice rang out in her head as she stared into the most beautiful hazel eyes she had ever seen.

Hotohori stared, unblinking. His whole body tensed. Alert. Oh my god, it's her. Now what do I do? He stared at her face, absorbing every inch of its beauty. That's when he noticed a small drip of blood on her lower lip. He reached at it with one finger and wiped it away. He became transfixed. He couldn't take his eyes from her lips. They were so full and ripe and, and… He leaned towards her, wrapping his arms around her waist as his lips gentle came down upon hers.

Jenna was stunned. He was kissing her. Really kissing her. She gave a small sigh as his tongue entered her mouth. She eagerly kissed him back. There tongues now at battle. But she wanted so much more from him than just a kiss. Her hands slide up his back across the coarse material of the fencing outfit and into his hair.

His grip tightened on her waist as he pulled her closer. The kiss, getting deeper and more passionate by the second. His mind was in a whirl. At any moment, she would probably throw him to floor and stomp all over his heart. But, she didn't. If anything he heard her soft moan of pleasure as he pressed his body closer to hers. He must be dreaming and if he was, he didn't want to wake up. He let go of her lips to trail sweet kisses across her cheek to her ear. He breathed in the scent of water lilies and sweat coming from her hair and his brain gave up. He had to have her. Here on the floor of the dojo. He didn't care. All that mattered was her and what he wanted to do to her.

He eagerly sought her lips again, this time with a crushing passion that told her exactly what he wanted. She whimpered and tried to pull away but he just tasted so damn good…

"Excuse me." Came a voice from the doorway. They both broke apart like someone had poured ice water on them. Jenna hid her face. She knew that voice. It was her teacher. She was ashamed at being caught, in the dojo of all places. She felt the tears begin to well up behind her eyes. Not for being caught but for the joy she felt in heart at Hotohori kissing her. She was so happy she couldn't help but cry. Sniffle. She put her hands to her face.

"I hate to bother you both. But I have a class in half an hour and I need to set up." The man spoke as though he had seen nothing, knew no one. Hotohori slowly stood up, holding her hand and pulling her up with up. "Yes, my apologies. We were just getting ready to leave." He led Jenna towards the locker room as the man left.

Jenna never lifted her head as she was led to the locker room. Once inside with the door locked, she began to laugh. Hotohori quirked an eyebrow at her as he began to undress. "I am glad you found that amusing. Had he not come in I would have taken you right there on the floor." Jenna gasped and looked up at him, blushing. He was grinning at her. "Just joking." He nudged her with his elbow and she winced in pain. His arms went around her immediately. "Are you all right?" He voice was full of concern. "Are you injured?"

Jenna pushed him away, turning her back to him and started pulling off her outfit. "I'm fine. I just landed on my stomach. I'm going to be a little sore." She thanked the gods for the spandex outfit she thought to wear under her sweat suit.

Hotohori watched her in silence as she quickly pulled her sweat suit on and pulled her hair up into a messy bun. She turned to smile at him and blushed profusely as her eyes roamed over his body. He looked down at himself and grinned, turning his back to her. He had completely forgotten he was undressed wearing nothing but boxers and a tank top. He was standing there like a fool, gawking at her while he held his pants in his hand.

"Umm, I have to go… " Jenna started as she turned her back to leave. He reached out, grabbing her wrist. "Wait. Please, let us go somewhere to talk." Jenna contemplated for about a second. "Okay. I'll meet you outside." Then she was gone.

He quickly dressed, grabbing his tie and jacket from the locker. He had so many questions he wanted to ask her. So many things he wanted to say to her. And so many things, his mind screamed, that he wanted to do to her. He hurried out the front door onto the sidewalk to find her… gone…

A/N:: Ok, I didn't mean to leave it like this but it was getting rather long & I hate to bore you. But don't worry, I'm actually working on this story now! Call it new inspiration or whatever but YAY! Go me!
