Title: "To Make You Forget"

Summary: Chichiri had his heart broken, and his mind ravished ¬ what can help him forget? Takes place before the summonings take place.

A/N: This is a "WHAT-IF" fic, in that I realize that this isnºt how it originally wentand I know that Miaka didnºt find out about Chichiriºs face until right now - but I am hoping that you will be kind enough to forgive the creative license that I have taken with this story. This was inspired by reading great stories pairing Chichiri with the other Suzaku SeishiWhile those stories are awesome, I firmly believe that Chichiri likes women

There were children playing in the dusty streets of the Konan market; flies buzzed around the food in the stands

Nuriko stopped to look at a pearl hair-comb, but Tasuki pulled him away quickly.

"Aahhhhbut Tasuki!" Nuriko groaned mournfully.

"Hey! We need the money that we brought with usbesides, if you spend all your money now, on things that you could get any day of the week, how will you buy anything at the festival?" Tasuki smirked.

Nuriko appeared to be considering and weighing the costs very seriously. Finally, he sighed in resignation, "I guess youºre rightbut SHEESH!" With one last longing look at the hair-comb, he turned back to Tasuki, slapping him on the back. "Where to next?"

Tasuki blanched. "HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO KNOW WHERE WEºRE GOINGYOUºRE THE ONE WHO SUGGESTED THIS!!!" He raised his arm as if to strike, but Nuriko stepped away and began to laugh in a high-pitched voice.

Tasuki waved his fist at Nuriko. "Whatºs so funny?"

"Nothingjust the look on your face." Nuriko quickly covered his mouth with both of his hands, making his eyes like little crescent moons.

Tasuki growled, "Yeah, well the look on your face isnºt much better" This caused Nuriko to stop laughing and blast Tasuki on the side of his head with his fist.

"Are you saying that my face is funny!?!?"

Tasukiºs battered body lay shaking on the ground. "N-no, n-n-not at alllll"

Nuriko grinned as he walked away, "Thatºs better."

Tasuki got to his feet as Nuriko got further away. "HEY! Wait up!" He ran to catch up with Nuriko. "So, how much farther is this place anyway...?" Tasuki looked around curiously.

Nuriko shrugged, "Iºm not sure, I donºt think too much further."

"How do you know about this place anyway?" Before he could finish his question, his eyes widened with some perverse idea. "Oh I get it, you frequent it a lot, donº t you?" Tasuki smirked, "Come on now, you can tell me ¬ " His bright idea was viciously denied with the evil look that Nuriko shot at him.

"NO, I do NOT frequent this place. I heard talk of it, is all" Nuriko paused where he stood and looked to his right. His gaze traveled up the stone wall to the many windows on the upper floor. Shielding his eyes from the bright sun with one of his slender wrists, he caught some sort of motion through one of the windows.

"Well, Tasuki. This must be the place."

Tasuki whistled in appreciation. "When you said that this place was bigI didnºt think you meant this big. This must be the size of two stores."

"The size of three stores, to be more accurate." A voice from the window called down to them. "But donºt just take in the street view, why donºt you come in?"

Nuriko and Tasuki both started with their mouths hanging open. "Yes maºam" They replied.

She smiled from the window, each of her hands on one of the wooden shutters. "Just a moment, Iºll be right down." She quickly closed the shutters and disappeared from view. Within a minute, she was downstairs opening the door for the gentleman and lady.

Nuriko and Tasuki still had their mouths open, but still managed to enter the house politely. The lady bowed low to the ground, with the invitation to stay a while, while she got the housemother. She left quickly. Tasuki looked at Nuriko. Nuriko just nodded, his mouth still open.

"You can shut your mouth, Nuriko." Tasuki smirked. Nuriko shut his mouth and blushed.

"Itºs just difficult to believe that Iºm actually in one of these places. And Iºm not one of the girls." He giggled.

Tasuki was going to say something, but he was cut short by the girlºs return with an older woman. She clasped her hands in front of her and did a low standing bow.

"We are honored by your visit. I am Nadesico."

Now that Nuriko and Tasuki had a chance to catch their breaths, they were able to actually pay attention to their surroundings.

The room that they had been led into was a large, ornate room. It had higher ceilings than most of the other shops in Konan. It had a nice feeling to it. Very peaceful. There was a large wooden high-backed chair against one wall, and the other two walls were lined with cushioned benches. Nuriko supposed that those chairs were for their clientele. The room was impeccably clean, with a beautifully colored woven rug in the center of the room.

The older woman who stood before them had jet-black hair, pulled tightly into a large knot at the base of her neck. Her skin was very pale, as though she had never spent a day outside in her life. She looked to be about 30 ¬ give or take some years. Her kimono that she wore was pale blue with darker blue willow designs towards the bottom of the fabric. She had her hands folded into the fabric of her sleeves. She was beautiful, with kind but intelligent eyes. She looked too kind to run this business, Nuriko mused. His attention was suddenly captured by the girl who had let them in.. She was standing slightly behind the housemother, averting her eyes towards her hands.

She was absolutely stunning. When she had let them in, Nuriko fancied her to be the housemother ¬ or whatever you call itbut now that he got a closer look at her, she looked to be no more than 17. His own age, he noted with interest. She couldnºt be older than him. Her face was darker than that of the housemother, but it was her hair that made her complexion attractive. Two dark pink braids rolled up and attached by two ribbons on either side or her head, with a long ponytail trailing down the center of her back. Her dark blue kimono was lined with dark pink satiny weave. She was shorter than the housemother was. She had large dark gray eyes. Nuriko glanced up from his musings when the housemother began to speak.

"How may I help you gentlemen?"

Tasuki noticed that when the housemother said gentlemen, the girl standing behind her looked up, momentarily not able to hide her surprise. Tasuki couldnºt help but chuckle to himself. It didnºt surprise him that the girl was surprised. After all, Nuriko still looked like a woman. It was only that Nuriko was the only man that Tasuki knew, besides royalty, that took such prodigious care of himself. His nails were very well trimmed, his hands and fingers were slender like that of a woman. And with his long purple hair, he looked the part. So, no, it didnºt surprise him that the girl was surprised that Nuriko was a man ¬ what surprised him was that the housemother was not so easily fooled by manly beauty. He chalked it up to seeing plenty of beautiful men in her past.

Nuriko wasted no time in starting the conversation. Bowing respectfully, he introduced Tasuki and himself. "Nadesico-sama, my friend and I are looking for a girl for entertainment purposes." Tasuki was astonished that Nuriko was keeping a straight face ¬ if it had been him to broach the subject ¬ he wouldnºt have gotten through the first part of the sentence.

The Nadesico-sanºs eyes widened slightly, but she grinned. "Well, thatºs coming to the point, ne? Please, sit." She indicated to the chairs with her arm, as she seated herself in the large chair against the far wall. She waited until Nuriko and Tasuki had seated themselves before asking if theyºd like something to drink in the meanwhile.

Both Tasuki and Nuriko grinned nervously, as if this would allow them some means to evade their nerves with being here.

"Iºd like a beer, please" Nuriko said, with a nod of his head

"Make that two" Tasuki intoned, with no such respect.

Nadesico nodded to the pink haired girl, and she instinctively left to prepare the drinks.
"So, while we wait for the drinks, letºs get better acquainted, ne?" She stared at Nuriko expectantly.

Nuriko took the prompt. "Nadesico-sama, we are two of the Suzaku Senshi, sworn to protect the Priestess of Suzaku. We have come to seek one of your girls because of your reputation."

Apparently this was the right thing to say, because Nadesico-san smiled and began to say something. Her words were cut short by the girl returning with three drinks. After passing them out to Tasuki, Nuriko and Nadesico-san, she took her place again slightly behind Nadesico-san once again.

"Two Senshi of Suzaku, ne? Very good. I have heard the priestess is here, but I have not seen her. Tell me about her?"

Tasuki began, "Who, Miaka?" He looked at Nuriko who just used his expression to show that he had no clue what was going on.

Nadesico-san caught this, "Is there no words that you have that describe the priestess?" She said this bemusedly.

Nuriko blanched. "No Maºam, there are words to describe her, but I would probably use «hungryº as the main one." Tasukiºs eyes just about bugged out of his head. Once again, Nuriko said this with a straight face.

"Very good. So she has a healthy appetite? That is good." She was smiling now.

Tasuki and Nuriko sweatdropped.

"Koikokoro, bring the girls here." The girl hurried off into the shadows of the hallway. Nadesico-san watched her for a moment, before turning back to the two senshi. "You are aware of the compensation that we charge?"

"Yes, we are, Maºam" Nuriko held up a small bag of pure gold coins. "We are prepared to pay."

Nadesico-san nodded respectively, "Very good, and what time will you be returning tonight?"

"Nadesico-sama, we were intending to bring her back with us when we leave." Nuriko looked a bit flustered.

Nadesico-san blanched. For the first time in the meeting, she looked unprepared. But before she could say anything, Koikokoro returned with no more than 10 women.

The women ranged in heights, body builds and countenances. Tasuki supposed which were the more "popular" girls. They tended to look hostile towards the other girls, but turned to the two men with sweet faces full of innocence. Tasuki smirked as he closed his eyes. "Hmmph, thatºs why I stay away from girls." He said to himself.

Nuriko saw Nadesico turn to Koikokoro. The younger girl bent closer to Nadesico-san, and he watched as the elder whispered something frantically to the younger. The younger must have asked a question of Nadesico-san, because the elder excused the two of them, and they left the room. Before they left, she suggested that they use this time to decide on a girl.

As if on cue, the girls began to swarm around the two men. Each one begging for attention. Two such handsome men were not often customers only the older, heavier, and uglier men were ¬ the ones that couldnºt find a woman But sometimes, they did get a handsome youth in there, to initiate him to manhood or something similar. Once in a while, they got a handsome married man, who had gotten bored of the same old same old. But the cute ones, they fought over ¬ the older ones ¬ the ones that came around more frequently already had their favorites. Like it or not, they had to entertain their patrons.

But here were two handsome young men that didnºt look like they needed to be initiated into the world of men, nor did they look married. This caused quite a riot among the girls, as each tried their best to win their attention.

But Tasuki and Nuriko both were intrigued with what Nadesico and Koikokoro were discussing. They had to crawl on the floor to get out of the hive.

Tasuki cursed quietly. "Damn it! Why are they attacking us?!"

Nuriko looked irritated himself. "I suppose itºs because weºre men" He put his hand to his face when he added, "I can understand why theyºre after me.after all, Iºm beautifulbut that doesnºt explain much for you, does it?"

Tasuki sweatdropped and waved his chibi fist at him. Nuriko giggled in a high pitched voice, covering his mouth with his hand, backing away slowly.

It took the girls a moment to understand what had happened, but by the time they started at Tasuki and Nuriko again, Nadesico-san came back. With a clap of her hands, she sent the girls flurrying to get back into line.

"Girls" She said sternly, "This is no way to behave." She turned towards the two of them now and bowed lowly once again, "Gomenasai. They should not have behaved like that." She continued, sitting down. "Letºs say I was to let you bring a girl back with youJust a hypothetical question, where would you bring her to? It is not a welcome procedure to have a girl leave the safety of this house. Surely, you can understand my concern?"

Nuriko considered this question for less than a moment before replying. "Nadesico-sama, we would be taking her with us back to the palace."

Nadesico-sanºs eyes widened, but she calmly completed her question "So she is to be a gift for the emperor?"

"No maºam, she is not to be for the emperor, but one of the senshi." Nuriko looked into Nadesico-sanºs eyes, "And we are prepared to pay more for this."

Nadesico-san nodded her head thoughtfully. "And have you decided on a girl?"

Tasuki spoke to Nuriko with his eyes, Nuriko nodded in response. He turned back to Nadesico-san. "We would like to bring her back with us." They pointed at Koikokoro.

Nadesico-san followed their features to Koikokoro, and frowned. With hard eyes, she stared at Koikokoro ¬ who only nodded in consent. Nadesico-san turned back to Nuriko and Tasuki and shook her head. "No, I will not allow her to be the one to go."

Nuriko and Tasuki both stared wide-eyed at Nadesico-san. "Nadesico-sama, we are prepared to pay extra for her." With this, Nuriko set the bag of gold coins on his knee.

"Gomenasai, but she is not for hire." She looked at Koikokoro, who in turn was looking at her beseechingly. Nadesico-san ignored her. Instead she turned her attention to the red haired gentleman, Tasuki, whose face was turning red.

"What do you mean, sheºs not for hire?! Isnºt that what sheºs here for?" Tasuki stuttered almost incomprehensibly.

Nadesico-san shook her head. "She is not for hire." She rose to her feet and walked over to the wall of kimono-clad girls to her left. And one by one, she stood behind them.

"How about Sahira? She is one of our most popular girls." She looked at the men.

They both shook their heads.

Koikokoro quietly walked over to Nadesico-san and begged for a moment with her. Nadesico-san granted this and led Koikokoro back to the room they had just come from.

Once again, they had left the men alone, wondering what was being said.

Once out of earshot, Koikokoro got to her knees to beseech Nadesico-san to accept this proposal.

Nadesico-san picked Koikokoro up and held her in a close embrace. "Why should I let my only daughter do this? Iºve never let you before."

"But Okasan, this way our secret will remain secret! If they were to take any of the other girls, it may be revealed. This is the best way!" Koikokoro knew that she was making sense, but still it would be difficult to convince her mother to allow her to do this. It was true, Okasan had never let her entertain men before, though she had often asked to be allowed. She knew the situation that her mother was in, and she knew that she could help out more than she already was.

"But Koikokoro, I promised your father-" Her voice broke and tears threatened to swell down her cheeks. Koikokoro noticed this and went to hush her mother.

"Okasan, please donºt cry. I will be back tomorrow morning ¬ most likely. And I am sure that they will escort me back." She said this with no fear in her voice.

"Koikokoro I know that you want to help out, but I am not sure that this is the proper way for you to do so."

"Okasan, when we were in financial troubles with the house, didnºt I help?" Seeing Nadesico-san nod, she continued her plea, "Then please let me help out this way too? This money would be of great use, ne? Let this be my mizuage."

When her daughter mentioned that term, she turned her face.

"Besides, Okasan, these men look kind, and I canºt hardly think that kind men would have an unkind friend. And I donºt think that Suzaku would have chosen an untrue Senshi for the priestess." These were comforting words indeed to her mother, who had been wondering the answers to these very questions. Her daughter had always been more responsible than her age showed.

Nadesico-san looked at Koikokoro closely. "Are you sure that you want to do this. Youºre only 16 years old."

Koikokoro smiled faintly. "Remember Toisute, Okasan? Sheºs my age and she has a family on the way." Toisute was her only childhood friend that remained after she had lost her father so many years ago. They were like sisters, and now Toisute had a child on the way.

Nadesico-san slowly nodded her consent, though she tried one last time to convince her daughter that she shouldnºt do this. "I want a husband for you yetand I donºt think you realize that once you get into this line of work, you very seldom find a husband. I have dreams for you. I donºt want this kind of life for you ¬ I never wanted this kind of life for you!"

Koikokoro held Nadesico-san close for a moment ¬ before telling her that her mind was made up.

Nadesico-san took a moment to pull herself together again, before they went back to the main hall. «Itºs pointless to argue with Koikokoro, sheºs so much like her father.º She thought with a sad shake of her head.

When they entered back into the room, they werenºt surprised to see the other women trying to change the two menºs minds. This was their last chance, after all. Once Nadesico-san re-entered, the girls shot back to their spots, leaving Nuriko and Tasuki collapsed on the floor, sweatdropping.

"Boy are we glad to see you" They both moaned in unison, their limbs in the air, twitching every once in a while.

Nadesico-san smiled, closing her eyes. Koikokoro sweatdropped.

Nuriko and Tasuki regained their composure and sat down again, facing Nadesico-san. They waited for her to speak.

"Nuriko-san, Tasuki-san; I have decided that your proposal is acceptable. However, you must bring Koikokoro back afterwards. Iºm assuming this will be tomorrow morning?"

Nuriko nodded, wide eyed. «What was said in that room to change her mind so quickly?º He wondered. "Maºam you have my word that you will see her tomorrow."

Tasuki opened his mouth too, but what came out wasnºt exactly the most poetic. Tasuki hadnºt the gift that Nuriko did. But he did what he could. He held up the bag of coins, putting it in Nadesico-sanºs hand, and said "Weºll bring the rest to you when we bring Koikokoro back."

Nadesico nodded solemnly, escorting them to the door. With one hand on Koikokoroºs back, she said goodbye to her daughter, without a tear. As she closed the door with both hands, she let out a resigned sigh.

Her eyes met the other girls still standing there. Most of them were crying, but there were a few of the more popular girls that appeared to be fuming. She sighed again and began the walk back to her chair.

Sitting down, she was almost immediately assaulted by plaintive cries and harsher demands to know why Koikokoro, someone so inexperienced was allowed to go to the palace. After a few moments, Nadesico-san had had enough.

"ENOUGH, minna! I am not about to explain this to you. It is none of your business. You work for the house, and whomever the house decides to send is sent. Besides, the young men specifically requested Koikokoro. And since she is my daughter, I will not hear you disrespect her. Now return to your rooms to prepare for this evening, many of the customers will be arriving within a few hours."
