Chapter 10: Remembrance…

The presence of jasmine incense in the air was sensed by Sanzo as he sat in his room, looking at the cherry blossom tree that was planted right outside his window. Shyirin was still fast asleep under the silk sheets of the bed. Sanzo walked towards her and sat beside her bed. He untangled her soft brown hair with his fingers as she slept without noticing any movement. Sanzo walked towards the window once again, picking up the lighter and cigarette from the coffee table and lit it. He opened the sliding door softly and stepped outside.

`Shyirin must've put the incense outside yesterday night. I can still smell it until today although it's getting a little faint,' he thought to himself.

Under the sakura tree were four stones which each had a necklace on top of them. Each stone had five incense placed before them. The embers of the incense were slowly dying out. Sanzo exhaled the smoke and sat on the wooden step outside his room. He watched the cherry blossoms fall off from their places and scatter onto the ground, covering the green grass below.

"Time sure flies so quickly, don't you think so, Sanzo?"

Sanzo turned as he saw Hakkai walking towards him and sat down right beside him with his matted dark brunette hair covering his emerald green eyes.

"Where's Shyirin?"

"Asleep."

"So, everything's alright between you two?"

"That is none of your concern." Sanzo replied gruffly.

Hakkai laughed at Sanzo's remark. Hakkai gazed at the stones and sat silent for a while.

"You know, Sanzo, if they were still alive today, Gojyo and Goku might have been very happy. But…"

"Hakkai, don't ever bring this matter up in front of Shyirin."

Hakkai gazed into Sanzo's amethyst eyes with full of curiosity.

"Why not?"

"It makes her feel bad…"

Hakkai laughed and replied coolly, "And you don't like to see her feeling bad… because it makes you feel bad as well…"

"Hakkai, when did you learn to be mean like that?"

"I'm not as mean as someone else here."

Sanzo snorted and shortly replied, "Don't know who you're talking about."

Hakkai laughed again and said softly, "Can you still recall those days?"

"Of course I could. I just don't want to remind it to Shyirin."

"Hahaha… `Sigh' If only we've been careful a bit, none of that might've happen… Then again, it should have ended long before that incident. I still recall that day…"

A year ago…

Sanzo's party was crossing across the hot desert with Hakuryu carrying them. They were slowly reaching a town not far ahead. Goku leaned against Sanzo's chair and looked at Sanzo's hands.

"Hey Hakkai, are we there yet?"

"Not yet. Why?"

"I was just asking."

He leaned forward to see what Sanzo was hiding under his sleeve.

"Sanzo?"

"What is it? If it's a stupid question, I'll kill you."

"What have you got under your hands?"

"That is none of your business."

Gojyo pulled Goku away and pinched his cheeks.

"What our Sanzosama has under his hands is none of your business."

"I was just curious! You don't have to pull my cheeks that hard!"

"What the corrupt monk has under his hands is his souvenir from his girlfriend…"

"When did she give it to him?"

"Stupid! She gave it to him before she left."

"Is that so?"

Goku sat back and started thinking a while. Gojyo pulled out a cigarette and started smoking. Hakkai sighed and replied, "I wonder when Sanzo is ever going to admit himself."

"That will be none of your business."

Sanzo barked back. Sanzo held the thing tightly in his grasp, with plenty of warmth. Goku suddenly started jumping up and down.

"Hakkai, when are we ever going to reach there?"

"Relax, we're almost there! Look! You can see the mansion from here."

Gojyo lit his cigarette and asked,

"Besides, `Master Sanzo', why are going there for?"

"For Himura's wedding, of course. He said he has something that might interest us."

"What about the rest? Will we meet them there?" Goku asked.

Sanzo frowned and replied, "The Xu sisters will be there and so will the Slayer."

"Ah… one big happy crowd."

"What do you mean happy?"

"Hahaha…"

Minutes later, the car arrived into the gates of the mansion. Hakkai and the rest got off the car as they were greeted by Li Shi, Mei Shi and Ying Hui. "Sanzo's party! So good to see you again!"

"Yoo-hoo! Hey everybody!"

"So, you've come. Never thought you'll make it."

Sanzo snorted as he was greeted by the noisy crowd. Goku asked, "So, what have you two been doing?"

"We've been hunting for the Godhuntress."

"Any leads?"

"Yes. I'm sure we'll get her by the end of this year." Li Shi smiled and greeted Gojyo, "Nice to meet you again Mr. Sha."

"Don't call me that! It makes me feel old."

He smirked as Li Shi laughed. Gojyo caught a glimpse of Ying Hui and walked towards her. "So, you think we might have a little chat right now about our current situation."

"That's fine by me."

Gojyo and Ying Hui walked away as Goku, Li Shi and Mei Shi ran off to the sakura gardens.

"So, it's just you and me, Sanzosama."

Hakkai replied.

"Sanzo! So good of you to come!!!"

"Damn…"

Hikari ran down from the stairs and hurried to meet Sanzo.

"Good evening, Master Sanzo."

"Whatever…"

"Oh yeah, I forgot to introduce you to my sister-in-law, Hong Qien Ping."

A fair siren with silvery white hair and twinkling emerald eyes, walked gracefully down the stairs and greeted the two men.

"Nice to meet you, I'm Qien Ping."

"…"

"You must forgive Master Sanzo as he is a quiet man." Hakkai quickly exclaimed. Hikari grabbed Sanzo by his hand and pulled him with her.

"Let's go! I wanna show you around!"

"But I've already been here!"

"But you haven't been around here with my guidance! Come on Sanzo! I HAVE SOMETHING IMPORTANT TO TELL YOU!"

Sanzo just shook his head and was dragged by Hikari away. Hakkai looked around and realized he was all by himself. Qien Ping flirtatiously blinked her eyes and pushed her fringe aside.

"I'm sure Master Hakkai is thirsty. Is green tea fine with you?"

Hakkai laughed and replied, "That would be great."
