Chapter 4

His body felt as if he had awakened from a millennia-long sleep, extremely rested and yet languid at the same time. He slowly opened his eyes and gaze up into the clear sky, stars shining brightly back at him. It seemed wrong to him for some reason, the way it was so clear after such a storm that he'd just endured. The first thought to his mind was to make sure that everyone else was all right. He had no idea how the illuminated phenomena could have affected them.

" Ryo," he heard a somewhat distant voice call to him. The voice sounded worried and he knew exactly who it had to be.

" You okay Shin?" he asked loudly. The tired sense in his limbs was fading, allowing him to turn his head and stare towards where the voice had originated. The near-petite brunette was leaning against the side of the school building, slowly finding the strength to get to his feet.

"Besides feeling like my bones are made of Jell-O," he replied. " I'm quite dandy."

" Good," he chuckled before calling out, " Anybody else conscious around here?"

He heard the sound of someone grunting before he heard Shu's groggy voice answered, " Yall get the driver of that bus? Man, I feel like I just got pounded by a Sumo wrestler and woke three weeks later."

" Don't put out that option," Rowen moaned as he extracted himself from the bushes with Anubis' help. " Whatever the hell that was lifted me clear of the ground!"

" I feel like I weigh a ton and can't get up," Kento compared. " I think I would prefer to feel like air right now, wouldn't hurt as much."

Ryo crawled over to him and tried to pull him into a sitting position. " Damn Ken-dude," he grunted. " You need to quit eating so much of Cye's cooking."

" What's wrong with my cooking?" the brunette growled. " Are you insulting my Kento's weight?"

" Umm…" Ryo didn't know why the other boy was getting so defensive.

It seemed then that Cye realized how upset he had gotten over something so trivial when it wasn't meant to be degrading and his eyes widened. "Oh I'm sorry," he apologized. " Don't know what came over me."

" The power," Anubis whispered. " Something has happened, something grave." Rowen gave him a look of curiosity at his words, for he was the only one who could hear them clearly.

" Sage…" Ryo instantly remembered why they were out there.

" I'll help him up," Cye kneeled next to him and took Kento's arm. The ash/blue-haired boy stood up without any trouble at all. If was as if all of his strength had returned to him with no problem whatsoever. Ryo sighed in relief and stood himself, catching his dizziness and steadying his unbalanced legs.

" I hope he's all right," he stated out loud. " Who knows what could have caused that. Please don't have been in the middle of that, Blondie."

*****

His body felt like lead. Sage knew that he had drained practically all of his energy with that one move, but he also couldn't feel any presence left. All of the Halflings were gone. I have to leave, he realized. He couldn't remain here any longer after people started realizing that their family members weren't coming home. The Police would get suspicious and if anyone knew about this little rendezvous and talked he would be the most likely suspect.

He forced his arms to move and braced them against the ground. He pushed downwards, getting very little progress in lifting his body upwards. The blonde didn't know how long it would take to regain all of his strength again. This spell had been forbidden; the power risky to both him and whoever else might accidentally be near by. It could kill them in the aftershock. He'd only done it once before and had been unconscious for over a day and a complete invalid for two after.

Now he was stronger and had wisely chose against using the full potential of the technique so he hoped it wouldn't take as long. The fact that he could move his limbs at all showed the great difference. He had barely gotten to his knees when he felt a whisper of his inner danger warning. Even his inhuman senses were taxed, but he felt the pull of something coming. Something had gone wrong.

Suddenly a heavy fist connected with his face, throwing him across the lot and into the side of the building, a thin indentation cracking in the stone around him. It hurt more than usual due to his drained endurance for pain. A soft gasp was released by his lips and his teeth clenched instantly afterwards. He fell then, landing on his knees and managed to not collapse to the ground fully.

A high chuckle caught his attention and he looked forward. His eyes widened in disbelief at the sight of the Vampire standing there so close to him. " No…" he whispered. " Impossible…"

" Oh yes, very possible," he grinned. " My master gave me a certain protection spell over your enhanced 'abilities' along with a few other gifts. He had hoped to prevent you from using them, but no matter. You're still useful, your energy will return in time and he will be waiting."

" Who do you…work for?" Sage asked in a hoarse tone and he slowly used the stone wall behind him to support himself as he took to his feet. " Who is this…'Master' you continue…to speak of?"

" Sorry, not the time to tell you," the Vampire shook his finger at him like one would do when playfully chastising a child. " You will be told when I think it is time and no sooner, you might just meet him by then. But oh, no more time for chatting."

With that he disappeared, vanishing from sight by using his demonic speed. Sage was to fatigued to do anything when he felt the hands wrap around his throat. He wrapped his hands around the strong wrists and pulled at them weakly, but still had no power left within him to fight. Red eyes gleamed at him and he growled.

" Oh yes, very feisty, just like your brother," he smirked. " Master can't wait to see you again."

" Again?" Sage forced out through his clenched throat. " What are you…?"

Sharp nails extended and raked across his lips. " No, no. We'll just wait until He's ready to give you the answers. You already know truth; you just have to accept it. You know my Master very well. You could say he knew you in a most intimate way once."

Sage growled at him again, confused by his words. Determined not to show this, he spit into the Vampire's face, almost laughing at how shocked he was by that. His triumph was sort lived when the hand tightened so much onto his throat that it cut off his air circulation. He couldn't breathe.

" Rgiit. Rgiit daf, Verus Sanguis," the words chanted in his ear, calling to him. " Gip Noscdirr, kgouy mae. Rgiit." The spell was taking hold of his swiftly. It seemed to be chanting so close to his ear, within his mind. But the voice was not that of the Vampire. No, it was far more familiar. The words continued to flow over him, repeating themselves over and over again. His grip on the wrist that held him slackened. (Sleep. Sleep now, Verus Sanguis. Let Darkness claim you. Sleep.)

I can't let this happen, he thought. I have to fight back! But the words only became stronger. His eyes were beginning to become vacant.

The Vampire smirked as he watched one of the legendary Verus Sanguis slowly lose the battle with the spell he had cast. His Master had chosen well, as always. He would be rewarded extensively for this accomplishment. He was weak, he thought arrogantly. No one is strong enough to resist Master-

His thoughts were cut off by the feeling of emptiness that flooded through him. It was as if he no longer had a body, he could feel nothing; everything was numb. Everything was gone. Save the strange fire in his chest. He looked down and stared in awe at the jagged piece of wood that was exiting the front of his chest, right where his non-beating heart should be. He looked up then, staring into shocked blue eyes.

Sage watched as the Vampire suddenly disintegrated before him, falling as dust into the wind until there was nothing to be deciphered from and then the sound of something hitting the ground met his ears. He caught himself against the wall, his head falling to his chest before he could stop it. He's gone, he thought. But…how? Still very fatigued due to the spell, he had to force his head upwards, but instead found himself tilting over and falling to the asphalt.

Strong arms caught him easily. Even through his drowsy haze, he recognized the familiarity and security of those arms. It was hard to think but he looked up into deep blue eyes that were slowly fading to pale violet. Chestnut brown hair fell about a round face with a long braid over one shoulder. So familiar…thoughts were becoming harder to organize and his vision was hazy. But he felt a connection, something that had been gone for so long. He felt safe and protected, cared for as only person alive had ever made him feel.

" D-Du-Duo…" he mumbled softly as he drifted off.

*****

It's him, his mind was crying out in joy, his soul singing in awe at the reunion. Duo almost couldn't believe it. After an entire century of hoping, missing, and feeling as if he was missing the larger half of his soul, everything was suddenly all right again.

" Sage!" he spun instantly, turning to face the five boys that rounded the corner of the building together. In the front was a tall, dark-haired boy with bright eyes a shade of blue not normally seen, save maybe on a dog or cat.

" Who are you?!" the boy demanded, his body immediately tensing into a position of retaliation.

" A friend," he stated.

" What happened? Is he all right?" It was a brunette with blue/green eyes.

Duo nodded. " I'm sorry, but… I saw the lights and the wind was crazy. I came up to see what the hell was going on and he just fell over. I don't know what happened. I think he's going to fine though."

The auburn-haired boy sighed, " That's wonderful! I'm Cye, nice to meet you."

" I'm Duo," he greeted.

" Ryo," the raven-haired boy told him suspiciously. For some reason this boy seemed very protective of Sage.

At least he has found a few good friends, he smiled. At least he hasn't been alone all this time.

" I'm Kento." It was the muscular and cheerful-looking boy with ash/blue hair and a welcoming grin on his face. He motioned to the blue-haired boy being helped by the red-haired one, who seemed to be supporting him very carefully. " He's Rowen and he's Anubis."

Duo smiled at Rowen, but almost halted when he looked at the redhead beside him. He felt something, it was a strange tingle in his senses. He stared directly into the green eyes but couldn't figure out why. There was something about this boy, something that he recognized from so long ago he could barely recall it.

" DUO!!!" His head spun once again at the echo of shouts ringing out in the air.

" Who are they?" Anubis questioned.

" Friends of mine I left behind," he replied in confusion. How did they find me?

" DUO! Du-" words were silenced as Quatre sped around the school building. " Duo?! Oh my Allah, what were you thinking? What's going on? Who are they?" It was obvious that the blonde was worked up or else he wouldn't have been so out spoken.

" You found him?" Wufei was the next to join them with the ever silent Trowa and Heero right behind him.

" Hey guys!" Duo's countenance was instantly the 'normal' happy teenager.

" I should beat you in a sword-fight for your display of lacking common sense," Wufei frowned at him. " Why would you ever do something like that?"

" Uh…" he didn't know what to say. How was he supposed to explain all of this now.

" It is time." Not another surprise guest! Is this a talk show or something?! He wondered briefly.

" Hey Kay," he greeted. He turned to the decimated fence that once separated the parking lot from the sports fields. Standing there wearing her normal long robes, was the woman who had raised him for almost one-third of his life. " I knew you would show up sooner or later, seeing as this all happened. But so soon?"

" Hello Duo," she smiled gently at him.

" You're…You're the woman that brought Sage to the mansion," Ryo realized.

" As I said, it is time," she repeated. " But this is not the place. Many things must happen and many pasts must be told."

" Not the riddles," the braided-haired teen groaned.

" What are you talking about?" Rowen asked. " Who are you and what do you have to do with this? It wasn't just some freaky light show was it?"

" This is not the place," her words came off more like a warning this time. " Even the wind has ears for which to listen and the darkness had shadows that are still unknown. Come Duo, we have much to discuss. You all may come if you wish, but do not think that you will be given the chance to escape what is coming. Lives of all, great and small, meek and strong, will be tested."

Anubis was even more suspicious of her now. " What does that mean?" Kayura gazed at him, her deep blue eyes reading into him as if they could see to his very soul. He was unnerved by it, but did not let it show physical, instead opting to stare right back. After a moment she gave a small quirk of her lips.

" Come," she turned to walk away. Duo easily lifted Sage into his arms, the slumbering blonde comfortable there like he had been so often before.

" Duo what is going on?" Quatre asked him.

" A wise question that deserves an answer," Wufei crossed his arms over his chest. " And who is the boy you are holding?"

Duo walked off not bothering to stop. " Look, you can come if ya want, this doesn't have anything to do with you. But when Granny Kay extends an invitation its smart to accept because there is always a reason for it. She will answer what she deems fit to answer, but I won't." He then stopped turning back to them. " And this 'boy' is my brother." With that he turned and continued after Kayura, allowing himself to be led through the wide sports field to the forest that was at the border of the school property. He didn't even care that he had left nine boys standing in shock in his wake.

*****

" Sage where are you going?" Duo asked as he watched his brother walked dazedly down the street opposite of the way they'd been going.

" Don't you hear it?" he asked quietly. " I can hear the music. It sounds beautiful."

" Sage?" Duo ran in front of him and grabbed his shoulders. He knew his brother had the ability to hear things in his mind that he couldn't. His special sense of hearing being better than even that of canines. It was one of the things that actually separated them. But right then it was apparent that whatever he was hearing was causing him to be pulled towards its origin. But what is it? He wondered.

" Let me go," the blonde told him. " I have to go to it. I have to know what it is."

" Just calm down and I'll go with you," the brunette told him.

" No, I have to go," Sage told him. With that he punched his brother hard in the gut, watching him fall to the ground before taking off using the speed that was obviously not human. He ran, following the tune in his mind. It was slow and entrancing, alluring in every way and even erotic to a point. He couldn't explain why it was pulling him towards wherever it came from, but his mind was too clouded to think about it.

He slowed down when he reached what looked to be a large house and didn't even bother to wait at the gate, going straight through them and up the walk to the front door. He placed his hand on the knob and his mind halted, telling him no, that something wasn't right. But then the music became louder and all thoughts left as he opened the door and walked into the shadowed hall.

The hall was long, his eyes adjusting to the darkness to see many doors leading off from it in different directions. He followed them music, letting it lead him down the hall and around many corners until he came to large French doors made of oak. The music was coming from that room and he wanted to know what had created it. He pushed on the doors and they opened automatically, allowing him to see the dimly lit room.

The room was blanketed with different aromas that he couldn't pinpoint, but in the center of the wall across from his was a fireplace that provided the only light in the room. He saw a figure sitting on the couch the faced the hearth and walked towards it, his body not working on its own and him not noticing the doors closing behind him. The person he found was someone he remembered from years before, someone he'd thought to be dead. And then the music stopped.

" Omanti…" he murmured as he stared at the black-haired, green-eyed man. He was holding a strange instrument that looked very much like a flute, only it was wooden and thorns sticking out of it.

" The Appello Sanguis, To Call the Blood," the other spoke suddenly. " A fitting name for such an instrument, don't you agree? Empowered by the blood of a witch that is soaked into the thorns, it calls any Vampire or blood drinker that the possessor has on his mind at the time. Marvelous." Then he stood and turned his full attention to the blonde. " I knew you would hear it better than any other."

" What…?" Sage was fully in control of his own body and thoughts now and was completely confused. " You're supposed to be dead, Duo found you covered in blood. You weren't breathing."

" Oh, but vampires don't breathe, remember," he smirked. " And the reason why he believed me to be human is because I wanted him to. I can act so well, I could make a career out of it."

" But why?" Sage questioned. " Why bring me here? What kind of Vampire are you?"

" I merely brought you here because you are the best choice for what I want," he replied, the smirk still on his lips. He began to walk slowly about the blonde, his eyes appraising him in a manner that made him feel very open and vulnerable.

" What do you want?" he asked, his entire body tense and on guard. He suddenly realized that the other was behind him, breath hot against the back of his neck.

" Just this…" Omanti's voice died and strong arms wrapped around Sage's waist. He tried to move, but couldn't and that scared him. Never before had his strength failed him like this, save times when sparring with his brother. One hand left his waist while the other tightened and ran up his neck, titling his head to the side.

NO! Sage's mind cried, but he still couldn't pull away. His struggling was for nothing and he felt the burn of sharp fangs sinking into his neck. His entire body went still, frozen in pain. His entire insides felt like they were burning, but he couldn't do anything to stop it. The Vampire was drinking his essence, his life, taking what his mother had died to give him.

After what felt like hours, though just minutes, the mouth wrenched itself away from his neck and Omanti was breathing deeply. " I knew the essence of a Verus Sanguis would be something different than anything else I've ever tasted," he gasped. " It's like my entire body is alive all over again, I can even feel my heart beating in my chest."

Sage didn't reply, his body had become pliable, falling limply against the vampire. He smirked at this, lifting the boy into his arms and laying him down on the velvet couch of the home he'd acquired after killing the family that had been living there some while before. He stared down at the blonde, whose eyes were filled with pain, but half-lidded in exhaustion. Omanti reached out a hand and caressed Sage's cheek before lowering his mouth and capturing the other's in a harsh kiss.

Sage's eyes widened immediately at this, but he was too tired to do anything about it. He taste something coppery and spicy in his mouth and realized that Omanti had bitten into his own tongue and was trying to get the blonde to drink his blood. Sage tried weakly to fight back, but the black-haired vampire merely forced his tongue to the back of the smaller one's throat, causing him to gag before swallowing the blood that had accumulated in his mouth all ready.

It was then that Omanti pulled back, a smirk on his lips, satisfied with what he'd done. Sage felt so violated, so weak, right then. His couldn't move, couldn't stop the other from doing anything that he wanted to him. " You are a pretty one, just like your brother," he whispered.

D-Duo…his mind was foggy. Where was his brother? Why hadn't he found him yet? Why couldn't he feel him with their link?

" Would his blood taste like yours?" Omanti's asked him, knowing full well that he was too weak to answer.

No, not Duo, his mind begged. Please not Duo, please don't hurt him.

" I won't hurt him," Omanti answered suddenly as if he'd heard his thoughts. " I simply want to taste his blood as I have yours." Sage didn't reply, but he couldn't stop the one tear from descending from his half-closed eye. The Vampire leaned down and licked it before it could fall from his cheek. It was then that his felt his Link open again.

Less than a second later, they heard a voice yell loud enough to echo through the oak doors, " Sage!" The blonde knew immediately that it was his brother. He felt his concern through the link and tried to call to him, to get his help.

" Well, well," Omanti smirked at him again. " Guess I better be going. We'll meet again, be sure of that. I'll be near you for a very long time." He leaned in and kissed the blonde lightly before disappearing faster than his blurring eyes could keep up. That's when the large French doors were broke down and Duo burst into the room. His eyes were filled with worry and Sage could do nothing but lie on the couch.

The brunette found him instantly and saw the two puncture wounds on his neck, knowing exactly what had happened. " Oh Gods, I…" he didn't know what to say. He lifted the blonde into his arms and held him. " I'm so sorry Sage. I don't know how this happened." Sage tried to assure him that he was fine, but he couldn't. His head just lay against his older brother's chest, taking in Duo's caring warmth, as consciousness was finally lost to him…

*****

He jumped up, his eyes wide. It had all been so real, so familiar, the memories still painfully fresh. A hand touched his shoulder and he struck out instantly, catching the person in the chest, not even realizing that he was using much of his 'enhanced' abilities. The person gasp out and was thrown backwards, but caught themselves before they hit the tree not too far away.

It was then that Sage realized that his had been dreaming and that now he was sitting on the ground of soft grass. " I am glad that you are who you are or else that would have lasted much longer than it did."

Pale violet eyes widened before he slowly turned to face the speaker next to him. He was shocked at who he saw, but knew it was not another extension of his dream. " Kayura…What are…?"

" She was coming to bale us out of whatever trouble you've gotten into."

Another shock, one he wasn't sure his mind could take. Suddenly, he recalled chestnut hair, a long braid, the feeling of acceptance and safety in familiar arms. No, it couldn't be. He abandoned me…he reminded himself. He left me…he wouldn't come back now… But he couldn't deny what he felt.

Pale violet pivoted on the spot and met with eyes that were identical to his own. He didn't even realize that there was anyone else around, nothing else mattered. " Y-You…came back…" he whispered.

" Better late than never, eh?" Duo tired to sound humorous. Sage stood, his balance and grace returned to him and stared at the one person that he had always believed would be part of his life. He stepped forward, not truly knowing what to do. How do you greet one after not seeing them for nearly one hundred years.

" I thought I would never see you again," the blonde replied. He stood before his brother, his twin, emotions warring as his eyes melded colors like a chameleon.

" It's okay now," Duo assured him. " I'm not going to be running off anytime soon. We're together again, isn't that what's impor-" A hard first connected with the side of his face, sending him to the ground. He landed on his ass, a hand flying to his abused cheek immediately. He stared up into gleaming red eyes and could see the rage there, the anger that had been left simmering too long in confusion and feelings of abandonment and rejection.

" You no good bastard," Sage growled, the deep sound of his voice shocking practically all those present, especially those the blonde didn't realize were watching. " How DARE you show up now! HOW COULD YOU THINK TO SHOW YOUR FACE NEAR ME?!!!! AFTER YOU LEFT ME LIKE THAT?!!!"

" But Seiji-" The blonde had already moved, launching himself at the brunette without restraint. He collided forcefully and put all of his power into holding his twin to the forest floor. He tangled his hands into wavy chestnut hair and began to lift the older boy's head up, only to slam it back into the ground.

" HOW COULD YOU?!" He growled. Duo winced as the back of his skull continually connected harshly with the solid ground beneath him repeatedly. It hurt like hell but he knew that the pain had been within his brother too long for him to be thinking rationally. Sage had always been the more calm and reserved between them, but he had never had to keep things to himself, hold everything in, while Duo was there to support him.

" Sage! STOP!" The raven-haired boy, Ryo, was trying to calm his brother down. He almost wanted to laugh even through his beating. How could anyone think they could soothe Seiji when he was in this type of state?

Ryo was up when he saw that the fight was going to get ugly. Why wasn't anyone trying to stop this? Cye was just staring in shock while Rowen was being held back by Anubis. He knew Kento wouldn't get into it. He knew that sometimes siblings needed to settle things between each other. It was obvious that the blonde he had learned was named Quatre wanted to do something, but the light brown-haired boy Trowa was keeping a steady hand on his shoulder, preventing him from taking action. So he took it upon himself to do it.

" Sage you're gonna kill him!" He grabbed the blonde's arm to pull him back.

" No! Ryou don't!" Cye warned him, but it was too late.

Sage spun on him, his eyes a startling blood red and sharp fangs extending in rage. He harshly shoved Ryo, the other boy's body flying backward at an amazing rate. He then hit a tree, the solid wood cracking instantly under the force and all of the air disappearing from the shock boy's body. Sage's rampage halted instantly.

The red slowly faded from his eyes and he grasped what he had done. He was at his friend's side in a literal instant, catching him before his body hit the ground. " Oh Gods, Ryo…" His mind was in turmoil. " What have I done?"

Pain-filled tiger blue eyes stared into eyes that he knew, but at the same time didn't recognize. The blonde touched his chest with one of his hands and suddenly all the pain was gone, he felt as if nothing had happened at all. Instead a warm feeling flowed over him, radiating from his chest and flooding the rest of his body. Ryo was more confused than he had ever been. " Sage?"

The blonde moved away from him. He suddenly felt the extra audience that was all around him. Now he was trapped and didn't know what to do.

" Seiji," Kayura called to him. He didn't answer her and instead disappeared from the scene, his body fading away as if he had never been there.

" What the hell?!" Kento exclaimed in shock, Rowen's expression echoing his words. Cye thought he was in some dream and Anubis' eyes were cut in suspicion.

" Where did he go?" Wufei looked about them. " No one can vanish like that."

" He did not 'vanish'," Kayura replied. " He is just faster than your eyes can track."

" Duo's gone!" Quatre pointed to where the brunette had been lying on the ground a few yards away.

" Do not fear," Kayura smiled. " He has gone after Seiji."

" What the hell is going on lady?!" Kento was tired of the games. " How could he do that? Who or 'what' is he?"

" All will be told in time," she stated cryptically.

Ryo wasn't even paying attention. His eyes were focused to the left of the small clearing they were in. He knew Sage had gone that way. How did you do that? How did your eyes changed…they're blue? he wondered. What haven't you told us…told me? He didn't even notice that his hand was lying on his chest where Sage's hand had laid only a few minutes before.
