A young Duo Maxwell stood staring down at the wet pavement, his eyes shadowed and his mouth tight. The wars were over and now he could move on with his life and do what was `normal', but the boy standing before him and the love he represented was definitely not that. A scrawny boy with a mop of dark chocolate hair stood nervously in front of him, his blue eyes wide and hopeful, his stance uneasy as the rain continued to pour down on him causing his clothes to cling to him and make him look even smaller.

The beautiful boy stepped forward, his arms extended, as he reached out for the other he had come to love so much. His feet began to drag wobbly along the sidewalk as he got closer and closer to the braided one before him, “Duo…”

He stopped suddenly however, his eyes wide with hurt and fear when the other spoke, his eyes still downcast. “It's over Heero.” The statement was soft, but hit like a fast collision, its impact louder then any yelling. The Japanese stopped immediately and stood motionless before the other who had just rejected him.

Now the tiny pilot felt his heart rattle against his ribs, his vision was blurry and his throat seemed to get tighter and tighter as he tried to speak, “What?” he rasped out. His breathing was ragged and he could feel his head begin to hurt as he tried to take a step forward. The braided boy's body grew even more taught, it was as though he was a tight rubber band being pulled, and his muscles began to shake.

The Japanese soldier was close now, close enough to reach out and touch the other but that was when it happened, the ex-pilot snapped. “I SAID IT”S OVER HEERO I DON'T WANT TO BE WITH YOU! I DON'T-“ And here he paused his violet eyes wide with rage, as he looked down on the boy who had lost his strength and fallen onto the hard cement. The violet-eyed boy's shoulders rose and fell with his heavy breathing and he turned his head away from the broken boy sitting bewildered on the wet sidewalk. “I don't love you…” he said, his voice a hair below a whisper. Those gorgeous sapphires were painfully wide now, wide with fear, confusion and hurt as they watched the other turn around.

Watery midnight blues looked up, their last shreds of hope clearly visible within them as they took in the unforgiving stance of the violet-eyed boy. Those eyes winced however when they heard the voice that was colder and harder then the unforgiving sidewalk he had collapsed on pitifully. “I told you a long time ago. It was only a thing…I -“ The other boy paused causing the trained soldier's heart to skip a beat, and his breath to stand still, The violet eyes darted away and he couldn't see them as the boy spoke. “I love Hilde,” he continued and Heero couldn't breath, as he felt his heart drop while his stomach lurched upward, “I want to be with her…not you” The last part was less then whispered, but still those pained ears heard the words they wanted to deny so desperately.

The black clad figure was solid as he began to walk away, a half-hearted `good bye' tossed over his shoulder. The ex Japanese pilot remained, however, his fist clenched on the cold ground, his shoulders hunched in defeat as the rain pelted him, his head down. He could still see the violet eyes that held such contempt and anger as they looked down on him, and it hurt him more then any other wound he'd sustained throughout any war.

He bit his lip and only had to wait a moment before he realized the rain wasn't the moisture streaming down his pale cheeks, he began to shake as he brought a clenched fist to his face and gingerly wiped at the tears with his fingertips. With the sudden realization the floodgates opened and the once perfect soldier broke down and for once you could see the piercing pain behind his blue eyes. (1)

Heero gasped as his eyes opened suddenly and he sat up in bed, with an echoing gasp. The young man's breathing was shallow as he tried to calm himself; catching his breath, he blinked and looked to his window where he could see the rain hitting against it softly. Instantly midnight blues softened and looked away to the snow-white bedspread, and bone-thin fingers gripping them.

He bit his lip as he recanted his dream, the memories were just like a black and white movie, he could still remember the fateful day so clearly, and feel those same emotions just as intensely as he did then. Bringing a shaky hand to his chest, he rubbed against it gently in an effort to push away the pain, his teeth grit in a resistance to hiss at the ache. Sighing he laid back against his headboard, his pillows propped beneath him, "When will fate force us back together I wonder?”

Full lips pulled down into a disapproving frown as another fit of coughs shook the small body of Cameron. Duo leaned forward, concern in his eyes, it had been two days and the soonest doctor's appointment could only be made within the next week. As the days past his son seemed to grow more and more sickly. Placing the back of his hand over the warm forehead, he sighed, grateful it was the weekend and his appointment was on Monday. The little toddler sniffled and rubbed his face, before his father could pull his chubby hands away, “Don't touch your face, baby. You could spread germs.”

The boy pouted but nodded, “Okay Dadee.” He sniffled to himself and blinked when his tummy told him he was hungry. Wide innocent amethysts blinked up at their father and the tiny boy pouted adorably, “Dadee, `m `ungry,” his high-pitched voice whined slightly. His father nodded, remembering the dinner date that night and turned to see that the clock read a quarter till six.

Duo chuckled slightly and gave his son a loving squeeze, “Well I'll bet you are, champ. It's been a few hours since you last ate, huh?” At the little boy's nod, he grinned and hefted him up to carry him over to their closet and find him a suitable outfit for going out. Opening the closet he nodded in admiration, “Damn, Demitri sure knows his shit…” he said to himself before mentally slapping himself and covering his mouth in embarrassment. He looked away from the neatly organized closet into the amused violets of his young son, he closed his eyes, grimacing as he waited for it. Oh God here it comes…

“Oooooh! You said a bad wood!” The excited giggle that came after the statement only punctuated it and the braided man shook his head and sighed at the little brunette's antics, before turning back to the closet.

“Yeah yeah. Give the old man a break!” he said, as he sifted past each outfit, and received a giggle in response. Finally landing on one of his favorites, he grinned and pulled out the tiny white and blue outfit. The moment his son's bright eyes landed on the tiny suit however, a full-fledged frown pulled on his pert lips.

His small body puffed up and he folded his chubby arms across his chest in defiance, “Dadee…” he said, his tone with a childish warning hidden within the word. Duo grinned down on his son, he knew the toddler hated the small sailor suit, but it was simply cute beyond words! Carefully placing the blue and white suit beside the boy, he lifted his son up and pulled him on his lap, the frown and folded arms remaining in place throughout the action.

“C'mon, Cam! It's just one night, and Auntie Sally would adore this on you!” the whining tone seemed to befit the toddler on the bed instead of his pouting father, but the adamant boy held his ground. Duo sighed, seeing the resignation in his son's uncooperative countenance and he worried his cheek in thought. Suddenly the thought hit him, and smiled only feeling slightly guilty at what he was about to do, “Cameron…” he said, his tone heavy as he stepped forward. Wary violets looked up at him in question as he sat on the bed next to the little boy, “Don't you think your tenshi would want to see you in your sailor suit?” he asked, waiting patiently for the expected response.

“No…” the full lips drawled, and heated lilacs looked up in only slight defiance, “He wood wan me ta be comforbable,” the toddler protested.

A single brow raised at his son's statement and the ex-pilot sighed inwardly before concluding, “Well I guess I have no choice…” he trailed off pretending to turn away but keeping a careful watch on the boy who turned to his father in curious apprehension. “If you don't wear your sailor suit then tenshi cannot come to dinner with us.”

Finishing his threat, the braided man smirked to himself in accomplishment, his son's eyes had widened immensely and his face was easily read. Those full lips pouted only a moment more before the little boy nodded, “Ok Dadee…I'll wear da soot.”

Duo's eyes softened, his son had relented and looked a little disappointed about the suit, but he seemed ready and willing to do anything for his tenshi. “All right. Let's get you ready, ok Cam?” As he said this, the father stood and pulled his son into his arms, standing him up on the bed. Pulling the little shirt up and over the little boy's head, the braided man smiled as he put the adorable outfit on his son, the crisp blue and white contrasting perfectly. Finishing the outfit with the tiny sailor hat, Duo grinned and hefted his son into his arms beaming all the way down the stairwell and into the kitchen.

Aquamarines sparkled the moment they landed on the tiny sailor suit adorning the tiny nephew in his father's arms. In an instant Quatre was up on his feet, standing before the proud father and fiddling with the small child's clothes. “Oh Cameron!” he cooed, leaning in to place a peck on the round cheek. Looking the little boy over, he grinned widely noticing the barely visible pout still remaining on the full lips. “You look so cute,” a frown wrinkled the full features and the uncle quickly changed his wording, “I mean handsome of course.”

The Arabian petted the soft mop of hair, and the toddler couldn't resist a smile at the compliment. Duo grinned proudly and looked into his son's eyes, “What do we say?” he asked.

Pudgy fingers fidgeted for a moment and you could see the hard thoughts going on behind the young eyes, before they finally lit up, “Tank you, unkul,” he beamed. The sweet show of gratitude and manners earned the nephew a sound `your welcome' from his blonde uncle.

Duo looked around, when he came down the stairs to the kitchen the only people who he'd seen so far had been Trowa and Quatre, and he wondered where his Chinese friend and his wife were. “Wufei just came down,” forest green eyes looked into Duo's, seeing the questioning on the others face, “He said Sally needed a few more minutes but they would be down soon enough.” When the banged young man finished he smiled as Duo nodded to him, and walked over to the small sailor in his arms.

The three friends talked and joked with Duo's son for only a moment before a high pitched squeal could be heard and suddenly golden locks were in front of Duo. “Oh Duo! He looks absolutely adorable!” the blonde woman gushed as she grabbed the small hands of her nephew and smiled at him. “You look so nice, sweetie,” she said, hugging the little boy before he smiled and thanked her. She pet his head tenderly, admiring the outfit, when suddenly a fit of coughs shook the small boy in his father's hold.

Dark eyes narrowed, and the Preventer stepped forward, slipping an arm around his wife's waist, “You should really get that looked at, Duo,” he said, a frown set on his dark features, “When did you say your appointment was again?” The Chinese watched as his wife examined their young nephew, a look of worry across her pale face.

“Monday, up at Sally's hospital. With a Doctor…Johanson?” When the braided man spoke, four pairs of eyes widened and silence reigned for a brief moment before the blonde doctor hurriedly spoke up.

“That's good,” she said, rubbing the boy's cheek, “I know Dennis Johanson. We met in college, he's a good guy…very smart, and good with kids too.” Sky blue eyes darted around the room for a moment before the woman cleared her throat and spoke again, “What time are you going?”

The braided man thought for a second, then shrugged, “Around noon, I think.” At his reply the blonde's eyes widened again before she closed them in a makeshift smile.

“Ok, well then are we ready?” she asked looking around, and when everyone agreed she stepped forward, her husband still holding her protectively. Quatre and Trowa smiled to each other and silently linked hands, comfortably, and walked in stride closely behind the Chinese and his wife. Finally Duo came, smiling down on his son, he stopped however at the protesting tug on his shirt.

“Wait!” the little boy called loudly causing everyone to stop and turn to see what could possibly make him want to wait. Duo blinked down on his son in confusion before the boy continued, “We fogot tenshi.” A confused frown pulled at the boy's father's lips and he blinked to look at Sally who merely shrugged.

“Um…” the violet-eyed man thought for a moment before he continued, “Why don't you call to him then? We did promise he could come along.” He didn't know what his young son was going to do, but he was beginning to worry about the child's attachment to this `tenshi'. As soon as he said this, the little imp began to struggle in his hold, obviously attempting to be let down. Complying gently, and setting his son down, Duo watched bewildered as tiny feet ran to the bottom of the stair well, where the small boy began calling out to his angel.

Curled up on his bed, a thick book gripped between his fingers, Heero frowned, his blue-eyes darting away from the small print to look around his room. He sat up fully from his bed and turned his head from side to side, he could hear a distant calling, the voice was high and childish and he could barely make out what the voice was saying. Cocking his head slightly he listened from his bed until midnight blues widened in realization. The voice was coming from Duo's son, and he was calling out to him.

The Japanese youth's eyes turned down on his comforter, a scattered look on his face as he tried to think of how to react to the boy's calls. Making a decision he stood from his bed feebly and slid into his slippers, easily making his way across his bedroom and into the hallway. He could clearly hear the desperation and hopefulness in the little voice now and it tore at his heartstrings as he stood behind the wall, just out of sight from the staircase. He knew Sally and Wufei were taking everyone out to eat tonight and he had heard them all shuffling to leave before it had grown silent. He bit his lip as the child's voice grew weak and then he heard the voice he hadn't heard in so long.

Duo stepped forward after watching his son, he felt for the boy when he saw the distraught look on the fresh features and he wished he knew what to say, but he simply set a hand on his son's shoulder. Taking a deep breath he smiled, “Maybe he's protecting a damsel, huh champ?” he said softly before deftly lifting the boy into his arms and turning away from the stairwell.

Sally frowned softly to herself, she wondered why the boy had called towards the upstairs and thought carefully about what the boy had said about his mysterious visitor. However when he had received no reply she smiled sadly at him and turned around before being led out the door by her husband, after she called a swift `goodbye' to Demitri.

Sad violets watched the house, as the son was carried outside to the car, his chest hurt and he felt confused that his tenshi hadn't heard him. He looked up at the house wistfully, his eyes roving across it, from its door to the windows before they stopped on one imparticular. The young brunette blinked, looking through the shining glass, then blinked again, a smile breaking out across his face as he recognized the figure smiling at him from the upstairs window.

The slim person in the window was glowing as the evening light hit the window, and their hand was raised in a bittersweet wave, a small smile on the beautiful face. Cameron grinned as he was set in a car seat, and waved back animatedly before the figure stepped away from the window.

Duo frowned, as his son began to wave excitedly back at the house, “What are you…?” He turned to look up at the house, his eyes searching every window, but each was empty. The braided man turned back to his son and ruffled his hair, “Silly boy,” he whispered before stepping into the car as well.

The evening went well with the five friends. They had stopped at a nice seafood restaurant and had laughed about old times and talked about the future when the blonde doctor had spoken up. The news about their upcoming baby brought a round of cheers and another round of drinks for the men. When they finished their meal Duo, Trowa and Quatre decided to split the bill as a thank you to their hosts and in congratulations.

Once they arrived home again, Duo hiccuped and grinned, his face tinted red from the liquor. He and his shorter blonde comrade joked as they both hiccuped and went up the stairs bidding everyone goodnight and congratulating the expecting parents one more time. Trowa smiled at the two as they linked arms and swerved up the stairs, he had a firm hold on his sleeping nephew and he planned on tucking him as well as his father in.

Both Quatre and Duo giggled quietly at some inside joke as they made their way to the latter's bedroom. Once they were inside the room both men plopped onto the bed unceremoniously and sighed, “Well -hic- I think we'd better head off -hic- to bed,” the blonde said smiling over to his fellow ex-pilot.

The bleary eyed father merely nodded and grinned, taking his sleeping son from his green-eyed friend and laying him down underneath the covers. He watched as the taller man took hold of his intoxicated boyfriend around the waist, and smiled at him, helping him out of the room and mumbling a `good night'. He watched them longingly as they walked gradually down the hallway, the shorter blonde staggering a few times only to be held up securely by his lover. Before they entered their room, violet eyes caught a passionate kiss, as the two stumbled into their bedroom.

He sighed, and pulled off his shirt hiccuping slightly to himself. All this time he'd wished for someone like that. Blue eyes immediately filled his thoughts and he mentally clobbered himself. He had, had someone like that and he'd thrown it away for the sake of being like everyone else, and for being what he had thought in his adolescence was `normal'. He snorted to himself as he pulled off his slacks, “What's not -hic- normal about a fat bitch that beats her toddler,” he grumbled sarcastically before rolling over underneath the covers and huddling up to his son.

The rest of the weekend passed quickly, Demitri would bring a hot bowl of soup everyday for the pale boy, who seemed to grow worse. Duo sighed as he watched his son and was grateful that finally the appointment would be today, and he could hopefully get some medicine for his baby.

After getting dressed and pulling a warm sweater over his son's full head of hair, he grabbed his son by the hand and carefully led him down the stairs and into the kitchen where he saw Trowa and Wufei sipping coffee and sifting through newspapers. “Morning,” he chirped, and the two men set their papers down for a moment.

Trowa's lips quirked in a tiny smile of welcome and he nodded, “Good Morning, Duo,” he turned to the little bundled up boy, “Cameron.” The sickly boy mustered a weak smile and waved to his uncles mumbling a garbled `good morning'.

The dark-haired Chinese stood and walked over to the countertop, calling out a `Good Morning' to the braided man and his son as he poured the father a generous cup of steaming coffee. Handing his friend the hot mug, he nodded to where the cream and sugar could be found, and received a `thank you'.

Walking his son over to Trowa, where the tall man promptly lifted the boy onto his lap, the braided father proceeded to the cream and sugar. “Where are Quat and Sal?” he asked idly as he poured an absurd amount of sugar into his coffee. For a moment there was silence and he watched in curiosity as a quick exchange was made between the two at the table, before Trowa hurriedly looked down to talk softly to his ill son. Grabbing the cream he turned to his Chinese friend for an answer, and the other merely picked up his newspaper as he replied.

“I think Sally had to go out and do some shopping. Quatre said he needed some stuff so he went to help her…” he trailed off, hearing the violet-eyed man set down the cream, and grab a spoon to stir his coffee.

Taking a sip from his coffee, Duo shrugged, fully aware that the two at the table were lying. “Alright. Well they'll probably be home before I am,” he took another sip and looked over to his son. “You ready, kid?” The little boy nodded and hugged his uncle before saying goodbye and walking over to his father where they intertwined hands. Finishing his coffee, he set the mug down with a thud and grinned waving to his friends, “We're off then. We should be home in a few hours if we have to go to a pharmacy.”

Wufei reached into his pocket, nodding and holding his paper in the other hand as he pulled out a pair of keys. He tossed them to the other man who caught them with little effort and waved goodbye, smiling at his nephew.

Walking into the large hospital, Duo ran forward as he saw the elevator closing. He knew he was too late though, and stopped before he reached it, sighing. Large Amethysts read along the directory for the office he was to go to, his foot tapped impatiently as he clutched to his son's small hand gently.

Finally finding the floor he was to go to, he grinned, reading aloud to himself, “Level D, room 204.” He pressed the button for the elevator hard, and stood for a minute before his patience wore thin and he decided on the stairwell.

The ride up the elevator was quiet, Sally, was almost sweating at the heat and the fact that they had narrowly escaped a disastrous run in. Her light blue eyes locked onto Quatre's aqua one's and he made a face, telling her he'd seen the closeness of the situation as well. She felt bad for not holding the elevator for their braided friend, but she felt confident the doors were close enough that he hadn't noticed who was inside.

Her eyes quickly fell on the small Japanese within the other blonde's hold as she pushed the button for level D, again, hoping to hurry the slow ascend. When the elevator finally came to a stop, they stepped out, and made their way down the hallway. She looked over to the dark-headed boy and couldn't help but smile, He was still thin of course, but his face had some color to it, his hair was slowly gaining its shine back, and his cheeks weren't sunken in anymore. The boy was more beautiful then ever and she couldn't resist the urge to grab his hand as Quatre held the door open for them. As they walked inside she could hear a door closing behind her, and her eyes caught the room number, 203.

Duo took a deep breath, and panted slightly setting his son down as they stepped out of the stairwell and closed the door. He walked down the hallway for a moment reading the room numbers aloud to himself. “201…202…203…Here we go, 204,” he called and opened the door allowing his son to walk in first.
