Sitting in the airy conference room at Preventer Headquarters, Agents Heero Yuy, Trowa Barton, and Chang Wufei waited quietly for Une to tell them about their latest case. While they did take on the so-called 'normal' cases, any case that involved all three of them was bound to have far-reaching complications. They were, quite frankly, the best, which their case load and success rate echoed.
Une punched a button on her remote control to bring up a map of the Earth, the colonies and the space lanes. Red stars were scattered randomly along the space lanes. "This gentlemen, illustrates the locations of hits by a pirate who has been preying on cargo craft on the Earth to Colony runs. So far, this pirate has only taken cargo. None of the pilots have been injured or the shuttles damaged. While the attacks have not increased in frequency as much as projected, they are still unacceptable. It runs counter to the order we're trying to maintain to allow a pirate any room to maneuver."
Pausing to take a sip of water, she continued. "In the folders in front of you is the sensor data on the pirate ship, as well as the statements by the shuttle pilots. At present, the merchant consituents of one of L1's senators, Hiram Grant, are feeling the greatest harm from this pirate. It is the wish of Senator Grant that we catch this pirate and bring him to justice. He is seconded by Quatre Winner in his capacity as a senator from L4. Minister Peacecraft has also taken an interest and asked specifically that you be assigned to the case."
Trowa raised one eyebrow. "Us?"
"You do have a habit of managing to do the impossible." Une smirked before tapping one of the folders. "Review the information and do what you have to do. We want this dealt with as soon as possible. The current government has been stable since Mariemeia's attempted coup, but 10 years is nothing in the grand scheme of things. Interruptions of trade to the colonies without Earth taking steps could create political tensions and harm the tentative unification between the Colonies and Earth. Dismissed."
"Ready to save the world again, Yuy?" Wufei smiled teasingly as he stretched his compact form after Une's departure.
"If you leave it all up to me again, I'll tell your wife this time." Heero smirked as Wufei paled.
Trowa chuckled and flipped through the folder in front of him. "This guy's good, very good."
Wufei looked over. "What, you mean not injuring people? He probably just knew that a body count would encourage us to come after him sooner."
"There is that." Trowa frowned, clearly uncertain that was the whole of it.
"Do you notice the pattern to the attacks?" Heero had been studying the map and comparing it with the manifests.
"Huh?" Trowa looked up.
"Trust the human computer to get a jump on things." Wufei grumbled but obediently looked at the map.
"All of the attacks have taken cargo that was headed to L1, either directly to Senator Grant or to one of the main corporations there, who all have a close relationship with the senator." Heero looked up at his partners. "We may be looking at someone with a grudge against Senator Grant or the L1 government."
"I'll look into the manifests again." Trowa rose from the table.
"I'll look into any potential enemies of the Senator." Wufei volunteered.
Heero stood as well. "I'll try to find where the pirate's shipping out of. He has to come into port sometime."
All three nodded, satisfied that the pirate could not stay at large for long.

Sitting in his office at the headquarters of the Winner Corporation, Quatre Reberba Winner, only son and heir of his father, sighed as he flipped through the latest report. As a favor for his political ally, Hiram Grant, Quatre had retrieved the latest shuttle that had been hijacked by the pirate. Actually, he had given the contract to Duo's salvage yard. Though Duo made a living with it, it wasn't a terribly good one. Directly after the wars, there had been a fortune waiting to be taken by the salvage agent with enough initiative. Now that space had been largely cleared of ship and mobile suit debris and the current political situation showed no signs of adding to the little that remained, salvage was no longer the lucrative business it had once been. Having watched Duo move from the Preventers to piloting shuttles before returning to salvage, he had no wish to see Duo be forced into another career. Especially since he seemed to enjoy salvage so much.
Quatre tossed the report aside in disgust. The pieces of the puzzle just didn't fit together. He wanted to see peace and order prevail, so he had backed Grant on getting the Preventers involved and had personally asked Relena for his former partners. If anyone could solve this little mystery, they could. But he had the feeling this was going to be far from easy.
He was shaken from his reverie by the phone ringing. Very few people knew the direct line to his office, bypassing his overprotective secretary. Answering, he was hardly surprised to see Duo's smiling face. "Hello, Duo."
"Hey, Quat! I just wanted to thank you for that retrieval job. It was a life saver, ya know?" Duo stifled his grin. //Life saver for the pilot, at least.//
"No problem, Duo." Quatre smiled benignly. He was always happy to help out a friend.
"If it weren't for you and Howard, I probably woulda gone under by now." //Which is perfectly true of the legitimate business.// Duo consoled himself that he wasn't technically lying to his friend. He hated having to bend the truth, but Quatre was too close to Grant for comfort.
Duo had given up on trying to convince people that there were still military dangers out there. No one wanted to hear it and were more than ready to dismiss it as a soldier trying to extend his usefullness. He saw the dangers, had found proof they existed, and taken the appropriate steps to minimize them. Duo had attempted to tell the Preventers, but his warnings had been dismissed. So he took matters into his own hands. It bordered on being a vigilante, but Duo had toed that line before.
"Nonsense. You're known as the go-to guy for hard to get parts. You're building just the kind of reputation you need." Quatre soothed his friend, trying to distract him from thoughts of charity. Duo did have his pride.
The grin that answered Quatre was exactly what he was looking for, though he didn't realize it had nothing to do with his comments. "Say, Quat, who got this shuttle? The Preventers were being cagey, but I noticed all the cargo was gone. That pirate that's been in the newsvids?"
"Just between us, yes. They have no clue who the pirate is, but it's high time something was done. The Preventers are sending Heero, Trowa, and Wufei to investigate. If anyone can catch this pirate, it'll be them."
"Oh, definitely." Duo grinned. "I wish them all the luck." //Because they're about to be led a VERY wild chase... to a goal they are NOT expecting!//
