Chapter #18: The Ambush
Mike inspected the gundams one by one with a mechanic's eye, taking in the details. Ignoring the distrustful blows of steam from them. "Damn lucky Jess, she gets a gundam, I get nothing," her muttered. Wing Zero didn't trust Mike in the least. Altron was weary of the human inspecting him like he was on display at a local museum. "Finally someone appreciates the work of art that I am," Deathscythe commented cockily. "If you're an art work… I'm the Mona Lisa," Cosmic Phoenix replied. "Should I start you calling Mona or Lisa?" Deathscythe shot back. "You call me neither of those, but if you have the audacity to call me either of them, I'll hack in a fry your CPU," Cosmic Phoenix said coolly, the gundam let out an angry jet of steam from the sides of its helmet. "Yep… she's a hundred percent like Jessica," Mike smirked, "Ow!" he cried a second later as Jessica cuffed him upside the head.
"Oh I don't know Jess, I think you should take it as a compliment," Duo spoke. "Not if you know Mike, he wants something… must he also know that flattery gets him nowhere," Jessica replied. "Oh I don't know cousin, I think I know one man who would get something by the means of flattery," Mike retorted. "Don't even start Mike, I don't think Jess is in the mood," Sage warned him. The gang moved to their gundams to check on sensory and mechanics, they weren't yet sure what strange effects the gundam's sentience may have had on their mechanical parts, especially their electronic relays.
The only thing that was know that their central processors have somehow split, one becoming sort of like a heart, pumping information around it's various components, while the other was the brain from which the information was translated into something the pilot could understand. The various sensory almost became like nerves of the machine, not in the complete sense, as the machine could not feel what it was touching, or feel pain when it was shot at, but it did have the basic senses of sight, and hearing. And Wing Zero's and Cosmic Phoenix's Zero system could almost be put into the terms of telepathy if one thought really hard about it. But it was also know that the gundams seemed like children, but Wing Zero was by far the wisest, and he didn't bother to hide it. Each of the gundams had traces of their owner's personalities, to the finest points, such as linguistic slang.
Mike followed Jessica up to her cockpit, much to CP's dislike. "Cool it big girl… I aint going to hurt you," he patted the cockpit hatch, wondering how odd of a gesture it was. The gundam gave something that sounded like a snort, and another jet of steam escaped from it's vents. "She sure is a hot head," Mike said to Jessica. "I heard that," Cosmic Phoenix's voice echoed in the cockpit. Before Mike could comment, over the internal links they heard Heero's voice, "Jessica, you might want to turn to CNN," he said coolly.
Cosmic Phoenix having heard Heero took the liberty of opening a channel, it was fuzzy for an instant as CP compensated for the limestone around her. On the screen, the president of the United States stood on the lawn of the White House making a speech. Hundreds, maybe thousands of people gathered to watch the speech; many of them were brandishing signs of 'Down With The Resistance'. The president paused once before continuing his speech.
"It has come to my awareness that around our country, people are distrusting the alien companions, it has also come to my attention that near Chicago ten unknown craft have attacked the alien companions. We the senate of the united states demand that the resistance disbands immediately, your efforts could potentially lead to war between the companions and Earth. I ask the ten machine vigilante pilots, whomever you are… to disband as well and return the machines to their rightful owners, if you ignore this warning serious consequences will have to be taken in accord," the president spoke. The people around him began to clap and hoot. "Vigilante my foot!" Mandy barked. "Damn right… we aint no Vigilante!" Jessica affirmed. "I swear, I'm seriously itching to fly over to W.D.C and showing him the fury of CP… burning the White House down to cinders seems very appealing at the moment," she added.
"That would be unwise, and it would make things worse… it would be seen as an attempt on the president's life," Heero spoke coolly. "Heero… Key term… 'Seriously itching' I aint going to be that stupid, no matter what they do, they can't stop us, Hell a whole squad of F16 cant stop us! What they going to send against us? Tanks? They better get a giant spatula to scrape tank pancakes off the pavement too while they're at it," Jessica replied. "Sassy with words as always cousin," Mike added. "Stuff it Mike… I said it once, I said it a million times… flattery will get you nowhere!" Jessica replied. "Oh I don't know Jess, I think Mike is right," Duo piped up. The only thing he got was a death glare over the com link. Laughter erupted from Mandy, Amber, Sage, and Katie.
"She's in a bad mood," Quatre speculated quietly. "Women are always in a bad mood Winner," Wufei replied. Barely his words were out of his mouth when a blast of fire washed over Altron's head, coming from CP's nitro-flame canons, "I heard that Dirt-bag," Jessica growled. "Jess lay off," Sage snapped, not really listening to what she was saying. There was an almost feline-like growl coming from Jessica but she calmed down, better not let Phoenix sense her anger, after all who knew how she would take it, Zero System had it's flipsides as Jessica found out.
"Back on topic, what are we going to do? With the president's speech the whole earth will be practically looking for the gundams," Katie began. "As long as they don't find this place, we are safe," Heero replied coolly. "But what if they do?" Quatre wondered. "I don't want to think about that!" Duo commented. "I don't think it's a problem, even if they do, we've seen that Phoenix can partially move on her own, I assume that she can at least fire a flame canon on her own," Trowa glanced at Jessica briefly. "I can fire my vulcans too!" Phoenix replied cockily. "So can I," Wing Zero added. "There you have it folks, I doubt that those guys will show up in heat proof, and extra thick bullet proof gear," Jessica spoke up. "I say the feds will never find this place, I mean what are the odds?" Amber spoke up calmly. "We may not be worried about the feds, it's that Jacob Lee fellow that worries me," Jessica spoke up.
"Yea, he gave me the creeps, I mean… who would be crazy enough to oppose the aliens, for Pete sakes they have a ship that totally blocked out the moon!" Mandy added. "Some people are just that crazy," Sage shrugged.
---Elsewhere---
Meanwhile… somewhere else, Jacob Lee sat at his desk steaming, he underestimated the pilots, he was still shocked to see how easily that teenager dodged volley after volley of bullets, it appears as he had prior experience, and for someone that lean he was amazingly fast. His men were now looking though local school records trying to find these teens, maybe they attended some school, if they did, tracking them down would be easier than he thought.
There was a rough knock on his office door. "Enter," Jacob spoke up, leaning back into his leather chair. A man entered the office carrying a small stack of papers, "Sir… we have an affirmative match on them, the ten pilots attend the same school, they are in fact in the same classes," the man placed the stack of papers on his leader's desk. Jacob grabbed the first folder of the stack and opened it; he was greeted with a very detailed file on the boy who dodged bullets. Jacob smirked at his name "Well it would appear the boy who's been dodging bullets today is living up to his name," Jacob spoke quietly. "His name sir?" the man before him asked. Jacob glanced up, "The boy's name is Heero Yuy, and he's quite the little hero to be dodging bullets like that," Jacob explained.
"Ah yes sir, it would appear that he is indeed living up to his name. Sir we have a problem however… we cannot ambush them at their home, they live in a very prestige area, we cannot possible cause a scene there without someone noticing, and if they do, the FBI will be on our tails in no time," The man added. Jacob wasn't playing attention to the man, he was more interested in the files, he wasn't surprised that all of them were ace students, and with high IQ's. "How hard can ten teenagers be to overtake?" he wondered. "Sir, permission to leave," the man before Jacob spoke. Jacob glanced at him, focusing his steely eyes on the man in mild annoyance, "Permission granted," he spoke. The man nodded, saluted and left, closing the door behind him.
Jacob continued to look at the files for an hour more, getting acquainted with the teens from their statistics, he could already tell who was potentially trouble, and that boy Heero wasn't the only one on that list. "Not a problem at all, I should have expected them to be more than your average citizen… but all of this just seems so very… out of time," Jacob said aloud to no one in particular. "Never the less… what must be done, must be done…" he added, a devious smirk appeared on his features.
