Author Notes: Heero and Jessica have a little dog fight over the streets of Chicago, but Jessica manages to give Heero the slip, and Jacob Lee is about to come face to face with the fury of the bird gundam's pilot.

Chapter #20: Dogfight On the Streets

Heero turned Wing Zero sharply, expecting another blast of fire from Phoenix; he knew that if she continued to blast him with fire, that she was at least in some control, he could dodge her blasts. He saw Phoenix reach behind it's back, Heero gulped expecting it to draw its rifle but instead it drew something that looked like a long rod. The gundam began to twirl it and suddenly out of it's tip, a beam blade slid out, forming a scythe, a second later the gundam charged. Heero only had a second to raise his own saber to block the blade. "Heero what is going on?" he heard Amber's voice, "Do you think I know? She suddenly attacked me!" He replied dodging another slash from Phoenix, it wasn't charging aggressively, to Heero it almost seemed as if Jessica was toying with him.

"Well genius you better quit it, the people below are not pleased," Amber voiced. "Tell that to her!" Heero barked. At that instant he slashed, causing Phoenix to dip low, Heero dived after her; giving another slash Jessica blocked it effortlessly but Heero caused her to dip even lower. If only he could get her to land, Wing Zero could then capitalize on her, Phoenix wasn't the best of fighters on land as Heero noted, Jessica, as a true rookie, found it easier to fight in the air.

The other gundams caught up, "What the heck?" Sage voiced watched Wing Zero and Phoenix attempt to decapitate each other. Heero slashed again and this time Phoenix dipped very low, it was now between the high rise building, people below ran away, cars stopped, Phoenix landed on the street in a heavy thump, folding it's wings. Heero dove after it, but before he could catch up Phoenix blasted up, it's wings opening wide, all of it's boosters coming online, like a bullet it shot up, the boom of it taking off caused windows to shatter, a rain of glass pummeled the street.

Heero followed it, Phoenix rolled once and transformed to jet mode, in the instant it took it to shift it dipped between the buildings again, a second later the gundam blasted off, going supersonic, not bothering to clear the buildings. The sonic boom caused more windows to shatter, and as the gundam flew, the windows closest to its widely-spread wings shattered by the air current, Heero followed trying to keep his wings closed, to minimize the damage to the buildings, but also limiting his own speed.

Amber watched the destruction, the glass was littering the street below, she shook her head, "Jessica… what did you do!" she said in horror. Finally regaining control of herself Amber blasted off after Heero, followed by the other gundams.

"Man Jessica took it a little too far! Look at all those shattered windows!" Sage commented to the other pilots, "I told Heero not to follow her that closely, but he didn't listen! Now look what he got her to do," she added. "Good thing she just scared Heero a little, if she pulled the rifle, or even fired it, there would be casualties," Mandy spoke. "Jessica wouldn't do that, I don't even think she meant to damage anything, Heero forced her to land on the street," Quatre spoke, scanning the damaged buildings as they went, he only saw damaged windows, no structural damage, the buildings were stable.

"In any case we have to stop her," Wufei added, "I don't think Yuy alone can do it." Silence settled over the links for a second, "There may be a way, but… I don't know," Sage spoke, "It's worth a try!" Duo piped up. "If she didn't block her comlinks, I think that there would be a way to stop her, maybe if Trowa reasoned with her she would stop," Sage spoke. "She did block her links," Trowa spoke up, he was still trying to patch through, but it wasn't working, the link was blocked decently. "Damn, it's at times like this I wish I didn't sacrifice superior speed on Absolute Zero for the ability to function like a sub," Sage commented.

"Is it just me, or does Phoenix have a little bit of all of our gundams… she has Wing Zero's rifle, Deathscythe's scythe, Sandrock's thick armor, Altron's flame canons, and Heavyarm's recoil absorbers," Quatre voiced. "Yea… now that you mention it, it does make sense," Duo spoke, "You can't forget it has my Hyper Jammers too!" Deathscythe spoke up. "Alright you guys are on to us, Jess did design her gundam to be superior, but the focus was on Wing Zero's heavy fire power, and Deathscythe's speed, the armor was just an added bonus, the recoil absorbers have a bonus feature, they absorb inertia too, and Phoenix wouldn't be a phoenix without the ability to breathe fire," Sage explained.

"She uses the recoil absorbers as inertial dampeners, allowing her to have more boosters, hence making her gundam faster in the long run, her top speed can scratch mach three in Fighter mode, mach four in Jet mode," Sage added. "You seem to know a lot about Phoenix," Heero spoke. Sage quirked an eyebrow, she didn't realize that Heero was listening on too. "Naturally… Absolute Zero is phoenix's counterpart… where she's fire… I'm ice, Phoenix is focused on Offence, Absolute Zero is focused on Defense, that's why Absolute Zero is a lot slower, I have thicker armor, and less firepower, but where Phoenix would be at a disadvantage in the water, Absolute Zero feels right at home. And Vice versa, I'm at the disadvantage in the air; Phoenix however is in its prime when it flies. However we have a common basis, it's coded in the name of our gundams, the ending to be more precise," Sage added smugly. The guys got thoughtful, but then it dawned on Heero, "the common link is Wing Zero," he spoke coldly.

"You girls just keep coming up with surprises, aren't you?" Duo asked. "Heero should feel honored we modeled some parts on his gundam," Sage replied. "That is one honor I would have preferred not to receive," Heero shot back. Just then their link with the leader was severed, everyone could see he was flying lower, so they followed. "It would appear we are here," Wufei spoke up. "Makes you wonder what clued him in on that, the low flight, or the fact Phoenix went into fighter mode and cloaked," Katie muttered, she was at the tail of the formation with Heavyarms and Sandrock.

Meanwhile, Jacob Lee saw the little dogfight on the streets of Chicago from his portable TV, the even made news in an instant, not every day Chicago saw two giants fighting over it's streets and then one flying so low it shattered windows as it went.

"So you see? Jessica is not a push over," Mike commented, he also saw the news, although he was still tied up. "Now Mr. Bailey, tell us, according to you, how soon will they be here?" Jacob wondered. Mike paused, he could hear rumbling, "I'd say my cousin was already here," he spoke. Jacob Lee looked up as a man ran to him, "Sir, thermo scanner has picked up the approaching mecha's, radar however says there is nothing there," the man reported. "No shit dude! Radar cant pick up the gundams, they are radar-undetectable," Mike commented.

There was a heavy thump that caused Jacob Lee to jump. Suddenly the air before them began to shimmer as a form materialized, it was Phoenix, wings spread wide in a threatening manner, buster rifle clutched in its hands, "Let Mike Go!" A hissing voice came from the external links.
