Flight of the Dragon
Chapter 2
New Partner? Hello again Malcom
Wufei dumped another packet of sugar into his coffee, stirring in determination. Try as he might though, he couldn't block out the argument dragging on behind him.
“I still don't see why we have to be here. We already have partners.” Duo paused, “well all of us except Wufei that is.”
Wufei reframed from comment. Now that hurt. Not that he actually had time to comment as Duo just continued on. He sighed and took his coffee to the table.
“Besides,” Duo continued, oblivious to the slight turmoil his words brought Wufei, “he doesn't need a partner. He always teams up with one of us for missions. We know each others strengths and weaknesses.”
“Which is exactly why every team will be going on a week long training exercise starting tomorrow.” Duo shut up as Commander Une entered the briefing room followed by a man no one but Wufei recognized. The man's eyes lit up as they spotted Wufei.
“Well if it isn't my favorite pillow, hello Wufei we meet again.” Quatre frowned as Wufei ducked his head blushing.
“Who are you?” Trowa asked ice creeping into his voice as the man walked around the table towards Wufei. Une's eyebrow quirked as she observed the interchange, well this was new.
“This is Agent Malcom Stone. He has joined our team as of yesterday. He is a transfer from the west coast…” Her words trailed off as no one was listening to her. Malcom and Wufei were deep in their own conversation; Trowa and Quatre were glaring at the pair while Heero and Duo watched in confused disbelief.
Malcom shook Wufei's hand as he sat down. “It's nice to see you again Wufei. So do you still agree that I'm softer than the floor?” Wufei's blushed deepened as he nodded.
“Yes you'll still softer than the floor.” He shook Malcom's hand briefly. Neither of the two paid attention to the other show acting out on the other side of the table. Trowa's hands clenched the arms of his chair as he struggled to remain in his seat. Poor Quatre's face seemed frozen into an expression of pure fury. Duo and Heero tensed in their seats as they sensed an explosion coming. Boy did it come. Malcom reached up and tucked a loose strand of hair behind Wufei's ear. Trowa and Quatre exploded from their seats causing Heero and Duo to leap up and intercept their lunge. Wufei and Malcom shot to their feet at the action, Malcom's gun leaping into his hand.
“You bastard stay away from him!” Trowa snarled, struggling in Heero's arms. Duo had Quatre pinned to the table, arms locked tightly behind his back.
“Don't you touch him!” Quatre's wiggling nearly knocked Duo on his ass. Wufei stood frozen in shock, never noticing that Malcom had stepped between him and the other Gundam pilots.
“What is going on here!” Malcom demanded, sighting his gun on the larger threat, Trowa.
“Exactly what I want to know.” Une demanded, retaking her seat, “shoulder your side arm Agent Stone.” He shot a questioning glance her way before reluctantly doing as order, though never once removing himself from in front of Wufei. Wufei himself remained silent, staring in shock at his room mates. What the hell had he done to warrant such odd behavior. Shit they really didn't think they owned him now did they? He was just their room mate, wasn't he allowed to make new friends?
“Agent Change meet your new partner Agent Stone, although I guess you have already met.” A slight question in her voice knocked Wufei out of his growing anger. “Perhaps you should how him around the building.” The two went off towards the door, keeping one eye on the others. Une turned back around.
“Barton and Winner you are the first to go to the camp, followed by Chang and Stone and then Maxwell and Yui.”
“Your just going to let him go off with him?” Trowa asked, glaring at his superior officer.
“Why yes Barton,” she said folding her arms, “that's what partners do.” The angry shout of Barton's “he doesn't him for a partner!” followed Wufei out into the hall.
“Let's start at the bottom.” Wufei set off at a fast pace for the elevators. The trip down to the lobby was silent. Wufei ignored the glances Malcom kept throwing his way. At the tone, Wufei stepped forward to get out but found his way blocked by an arm.
“I am sorry Wufei,” Malcom said turning the body before him around. “I don't know what I did to piss your friends off so quick. Usually I need at least a full two days.” His smile slipped, “But know that there was no call for what vile words came out of their mouths.”
“It is not your fault,” he briefly clasped the hand on his arm, “every so often I do something to make them angry. I don't know what I did this time but give them time, they're get over it. They always do.”
“That's not very fair for you Wufei.” Malcom reluctantly dropped his arms. Wufei just shrugged and led the way out of the elevator. The tour of the building was brief as Malcom had seen most of it when he arrived yesterday. On their way back to Wufei's office, Malcom suddenly froze.
“Oh god what's he doing here?” Wufei stopped as Malcom hid behind him. “I'm sorry Wufei but I just can't face him.”
“Who is he?” Wufei asked, moving completely in front of the hiding man.
“My ex.” The two Agents watched as the man walked past their hiding place. Malcom shuddered as the man disappeared from view. “I'm sorry but he isn't suppose to be here.”
Wufei turned and took Malcom's shivering form in his arms. Neither saw the elevator down the hall open admitting Trowa and Quatre. Both glared at the two before they stomped off down the hall. Wufei gently led Malcom into his office. With a push Wufei sat Malcom down and grabbed some coffee.
“Do you want to tell me about it?”
Malcom climbed to his feet and stared out the window. “We were together for six years, we entered the academy together at 17. Life was great. I had the job I always wanted and the love of my life, Kyle Jones, loved me.” He turned back to Wufei with a watery smile. “All of a sudden one day I come home from work to find all of my stuff packed up and left by the front door.” He covered his eyes to try to stop the tears. “He left a note on the table saying he was tired of playing around with me and he was ready for a real life. He apparently had started seeing this woman at our Preventer branch three months before. He couldn't even finish up with me before he started seeing someone else.” Malcom collapsed in Wufei's arms, bringing them both to the floor. “I tried to talk to him but he wouldn't have anything to do with me. The last thing he said to me was he didn't even want to see me in the building anymore cause he didn't want his fiancé to get the wrong idea.” Unsteady, they both climbed to their feet, Wufei never relaxing his hold. “So I left the unit and transferred here. Figured if I never saw him again I might be able to make a fresh start. God why is he here?”
Wufei swallowed the lump in his throat. The man before him was strong, he couldn't imagine going on after such a betrayal. He hugged him and was once again reminded why he never spoke of his feeling to Trowa and Quatre. Good thing it was too considering the reaction earlier in the briefing room. He took in the slumped shoulders and knew that Malcom shouldn't be alone tonight. “Do you have a place to stay?”
Malcom nuzzled his head under Wufei's chin. It may not have been the man he still loved but comfort was comfort.
“I have a place in the barracks until I can find an apartment.”
“Come stay with me, I'll be alone for a week since my two roommates are heading off to camp as we speak.”
“Really,” Malcom looked up, suddenly understand he had draped himself over the man, “you don't mind?”
“If I had minded I would not have offered.”
Malcom chuckled, “that would be great.”
The rest of the day past quickly, the mood getting lighter and lighter as five o'clock came closer. Tossing the last case in the out box, the men grabbed their jackets and left. As the elevator doors closed, the man from before stalked past and approached the unit secretary.
“Excuse me miss,” he smiled at the blushing woman, “I was hoping you could help me.”
“Well sir I will do my best,” Angela replied leaning forward, pushing her chest up and on display.
The man grinned. “I'm looking for my old partner, he just transferred here from California.”
Angela giggled, twirling a lock of hair around on her finger. “I love California, its so nice and hot.”
“Yes it is, anyway his name is Malcom Stone. He's about 6 foot, dirty blond hair and blue eyes.”
Angela blinked, “Oh yes I remember him, he left a little while ago with his new partner.”
The man's eyes went as cold as ice, “New partner?”
Angela's smile slipped as the man before her did a complete about face. “Y-yes he has a partner, Mr. Wufei Chang.”
“Is he staying on base, Malcom that is?”
“Um let me check.” She turned back to her computer and typed for a moment. “Yes he is assigned to Barracks C room 345.”
“Thank you honey.” He turned without another word and walked off to the elevator.
“Sir, your name please.” He turned back around and pushed a bottom. As the doors closed he called out, “Kyle Jones.”
Wufei and Malcom left the barracks with Malcom's two bags. Wufei laid his hand on the poor man's slumped shoulders as he explained that all his other clothes were in storage. He didn't even have time to move any of his personal possessions from his old apartment before he left.
“Une has given us time off until its our turn to go on the trip. We can go looking for apartments for you. There's quite a selection of affordable ones near the base. There's also a few in town and one or two on the outskirts.”
“Thank you for your help Wufei. I know you don't know me very well but I'm not usually this pathetic.” Malcom snorted as he slammed the trunk of his rental car. “To tell the truth I guess I saw it coming but didn't want to admit it.”
“Don't worry about it, you can make a fresh start here. You may not be ready for another relationship but there are people who would jump at the chance.” Malcom peaked up from under his lashes.
“Even you?”
Wufei blushed, “if my heart didn't already belong somewhere else.”
Malcom's eyes widened in realization, “Agents Barton or Winner?” Wufei's blush deepened and he looked away, wrapping his arms tightly around his middle.
“Or both?”
Wufei shrugged, “We have a history together and those two got together before I could make a move. Doesn't matter though, they are good together.”
“Do they know?” Malcom asked handing Wufei his helmet.
“No they don't. Its best that way. Doubt they'd be open to the idea if I brought it up. Hell look at the way they acted earlier today.”
Wordlessly Malcom stated his car and followed Wufei off the base. Meanwhile at the barracks, his blonde hair waving from the breeze, Kyle stopped at door 345. He took a deep breath and opened the door. He stopped. “Fuck!” He must have just missed him. He kicked the door on his way out. He wasn't leaving until he found Malcom Stone.
