”A..Ah... Solo..? ” Duo's voice was very small, and seemed to be caught somewhere in his throat.
Then the dog let out a first bark. It was a deep, hollow sound, that resonated from it's wide breast with menace.
Duo was glued to his place, now completely paralyzed with terror. Solo had his fingers in the wire-net fence, and even he himself had begun to perspire a little. He was following Duo's every move with a hawks eye, un-blinking and sharp.
The dog was silent for a moment, and then it went wild.
No-one, NO-ONE had ever dared to defy it's solitude. It was the king of street, and it knew it. And now, there was this pesky little boy, bothering it's afternoon walk, showing himself into it's private place, and obviously it wasn't even going to move anywhere.
That human-kid HAD to be taught some manners!
The dog just looked at Duo for a second, but still it's blazing eyes were forever etched in Duo's memory, and then it attacked.
The sound was horrible. Roaring and barking ceaslessly, it threw itself forward, the chain that it was tied with stretching taut with a clang, and the whole fence shook by the force of the attack of the furious animal.
Duo screamed, and flung his arms over his head. Solo was gasping himself, but he still yelled,: ”To the far right corner, Duo! Run to the corner on the right!”
Without thinking anything, the lithe little boy dashed blindly to the corner, and huddled there, fragile shoulders shaking. The dog made a mad leap at the boy, and the fence shook again, rattling and clanging. Duo let out a piteous little yelp, before starting to sob heartbreakingly. ”S...S...S...Solo,,, G...G...Get me...Out...”
Solo leaned forward, pressing his cheek against the fence, staring trough it, breath hitching. ”Stop crying, Duo! Just come here, stop crying, and I'll let you out.”
But the dog was ruthless, and Duo simply could't move or cease his tears. ”P...P...Please...Solo... C...Come get me, Solo... I..I... Can't... ” He was sobbing so hard, he begun to loose all coherent thought.
Solo was telling him to just get up, and walk past the beast! He could't!
”You can do it. It can't reach you. Don't be a pussy, Duo. Get up, and come to me.”
The fence let out a screetch at the dogs next furious leap. Solo almost got a little worried for a moment. ”Hurry up, Duo.”
But Duo just cried. ”Solo... Solo...” His braid was toussled and falling apart, his face all red with tears, and he was wiping snot on his sleeve, while cowering from the horrendous animal.
When the animal jumped again, Duo lost it and screamed from the top of his lungs: ”MOOOOMMYYYY!!!”
Solo bit his lip, as his eyes darted nervously on the side. He begun to regret doing this, but there was no way he could get Duo out of there by himself. He just could't go in to get the boy. The fence had begun to bend just a little already, and Solo begun to really panic, as Duo was wailing and sobbing for his mother and Solo alternatively.
As Solo was wracking his brain to think of something, he saw movement from the corner of his right eye.
The light of the evening sun was copper in colour, and the shadows were long. The worn, gray asphalt was an exellent surface for a shadow to glide on. It was carrying a pack-back, as far as Solo could tell, and the he cautiously lifted his gaze.
On the street was walking a boy, approximately his own age, strong looking, and completely confidant in his bearing. Solo hated him on the spot.
Now that guy was a rival, if he ever saw one. He would have to make sure, that the boy was publicly humiliated as soon as possible. He was probably someone new... And he looked more, than capable of taking Solo's position in a heartbeat, if he wasn't carefull.
In the corner, Duo was so scared, that he could't even talk anymore. He was out of tears, but could't stop heaving. The animal was not about to stop, and Duo was certain, that he was going to die here.
”Hey! What's happening here?” a new voice yelled over the horrible roar and bark of the beast.
Solo simply glared. For once in his life, he didn't have an answer ready. Duo had to be rescued from the yard, but Solo had absolutely no idea how to do it.
The new boy threw him a piercing look under unkempt, dark bangs, and his dark-blue eyes were promising Solo trouble. They were unwawering.
Then , before Solo had had any time to even think about what to say next, the boy had stalked past him, and opened the latch on the wire-fence door, throwing it back against the fence.
”Hey!” he yelled. The dog immediately leaped to his direction, saliva dripping from it's evilly glistening fangs. The fence rattled. Duo wailed. Solo yelped.
The boy tore a book from his bag which was already a bit open, and hurling the book at the mad, brown dog, he sprung quickly from the door to the corner, and to the crying little boy. He quickly drew Duo up, and showed him behind his back, telling him with a tight voice: ”When I say GO, you gotta RUN!” Duo's little fingers were tightly curled in the fabric of the older boy's shirt, and for the life of him, he just could't let go. ”I'll run with you, but you MUST run, got it?!”
Duo didn't get anything. Weak with fear, he felt the tears starting again. Then a hand sneaked to him, and patted him briefly on the arm.
The hound jumped again, and this time the fence let out a long wail, that was predicting it's definite downfall.
The new boy took a moment to aim, moisturizing his lips with his tongue, as he concentrated, and then flung his backback forward, on the dog as hard as he possibly could, stunning it for a moment.
He sprinted forward, grabbing the other fragile little arm that was wrapped in the fabrick of his shirt.
Duo flew after him, more for the fact, that he could't uncurl his fingers, and the boy was squeesing his arm in a steel grip, than for actually being able to move his legs.
The few seconds they had after the stunning trick were luckily sufficient for them to get out of the closed little yard.
As the boy was on the entrance, he yanked Duo's arm rather painfully, and flung him out first, before tumbling after him, and turning to slam the door shut so hard that the whole fence shook, and the latch fell on place by the force of the impact. The dog was running around insanely inside, letting out howls that were filled with rage.
Duo was laying on the ground on his stomach, sobbing hard, and trying not to, while Solo was sheet-white and shaking, and the dark-haired boy was sitting on his legs, panting harshly.
Then the dog let out a loong, wolf like howl, and surged forward in a demonstration of frightening strength and rage. The fence was clattering bad.
All three boys were on their feet that instant, as if by magic, and then they were running forward mindlessly, to get as far as living possible from the terrifying cerberos.
Only the sound of sneakers slapping on the asphalt could be heard, and then the boys were gone.
